Role
The Gates of Nol'Burim
Added Wed Jul 8 00:33:26 2015 at level 1:
In the furthest reaches of the northern mountains there exists
the Kingdom of Nol'Burim. Nol'Burim began as a small human
settlement of miners and prospectors and quickly became a
popular destination because of it's rich, sheltered valleys
and it's untouched minerals. Early prospectors made note that
the rocks of Mount Nol'Burim were so thick that they would
often break picks and chisels.
As they dug deeper they found something else of value. Nol'Burim
was home to the only connection to the Underdark for many days
travel. While these trade routes were immensely valuable it also
opened the fledgling Kingdom to numerous security issues. As the
Underdark is full of dangers, raiders and vile creatures.
To address this concern a young man named Valeckis val Aurius created
a militia of paid soldiers who began to escort miners and guard
the fruits of their labour. Valeckis soon established a name
for himself, nicknamed "The Eagle" for his amazing vision and
swiftness with his initial strikes.
Soon Valeckis established other businesses. A bank, a trading
out post, general stores. He quickly became the richest man in
the region. A peasant who had become a King by pure ambition and
wealth which he used to construct a massive gate over the entrance
to the Underdark tunnel.
The people loved him. He had transformed a rough settlement to a
flourishing Kingdom in a mere decade. His crown was forged of the
numerous gemstones of the mountain and the crest of his House was
an eagle with outstretched wings, grasping a diamond in one talon
and a sword in the other. Beneath the sigil are the words:
GUARDIANS OF THE GATE. An eternal reminder if his House's place as
Wardens and protectors of Nol'Burim.
Sheltia val Aurius
Added Wed Jul 8 00:34:11 2015 at level 1:
The Ages were kind to the isolated Kingdom of Nol'Burim. With the
exception of battles at the Gates against mostly Duergar raiders
they lived in peace. The family of val Aurius continued to rule
but each generation seemed to drift further and further from the
neutral and methodical mind of their Patron, Valeckis. Soon the
family stopped seeing themselves as part of the community but rather
above it. Rather than share their nobility many of the family chose
to interbreed. This mentality mixed with these odd practices produced
a more sinister val Aurius with each generation.
which brings us to modern times and Princess Sheltia val Aurius. The
daughter of the now deceased King she rules in part with her two
uncles who believe she is far too foolish to govern. A woman of both
selfish nature and unreaasonable tastes, Sheltia would easily allow
the Kingdom to starve if it meant she remained well stocked in
Darsylonian wine and fine cheese from Voralian City.
The strife between Sheltia and her uncles was apparent to many in the
court. She was married to a weak, drunken man from a noble family in
Udgaard, a man who did not fit her vision for an elaborate future.
This forced marriage only caused her to hate her uncles more. A
sentiment that a young Drow emissary from Teth Azeleth picked up on
during a formal dinner. This Drow used this knowledge to seduce
Sheltia. They spent many nights together during his week long visit
as an envoy to firm up a trade deal.
It wasn't long after his return to Teth Azeleth that Sheltia was
with child. Her uncles were relieved, a formal heir that isn't her
that they could groom in the likeness of the Eagle. Their relief was
short lived when the child was born with darker skin and slightly
pointed ears.
Acitavian val Aurius
Added Wed Jul 8 00:34:50 2015 at level 1:
The child was raised almost exclusively by Sheltia. The rest of the
court wanted nothing to do with him given his heritage. From a young
age it was obvious that the child shared the aura of his mother and
father. He was a cruel child and Sheltia's treated him like a young
demi-god that could do no wrong. This mixture quickly turned him into
a little tyrant.
Sheltia continued to make a mockery of her own Kingdom. She allowed a
six year old Acitavian to rule as Magistrate and determine guilt in
cases that were reviewed in the royal court. By the time he was seven
he had condemned three men to death. One for the theft of bread.
Sheltia, as Queen, put all of the Kingdom's resources into her child.
"The Little Tyrant" grew more and more delusioned. As an adolescent
he refused to learn to fight with most weapons. It was hard and he
simply didn't understand the value of work. He instead chose to study
politics and history and quickly became an adept student of the arts.
Then his life forever changed on his 13th birthday when his mother
paid for a traveling troupe to entertain within the mountaintop
Palace. One of the main attractions was a magician who pulled a
rabbit from his hat, killed it, and then animated it's corpse to
continue with the trick. Acitavian was enthralled. He demanded to
learn of magic, an art that was largely forbidden in Nol'Burim.
The Necromancer of the Troupe was paid handsomely to stay and teach
Acitavian the black arts. He also used his proximity to the Royal
family to sway the boy to convince his mother to open the Gates
and allow "free flow" from the Underdark.
For the Good of the Family
Added Wed Jul 8 00:36:28 2015 at level 1:
This destructive political decision was the last straw for Sheltia's
uncles. They suspected there was an incestous relationship between
Sheltia and Acitavian and used this as a catalyst to unite the other
nobles of the Royal Court to usurp the crown from Sheltia. She was
killed in her sleep, smothered by one of her expensive pillows.
It was, as one uncle put it: for the good of the family.
Acitavian was now ruler of the Kingdom, another reality that his
uncles simply could not abide. Killing him would be too obvious, even
as hated as they were they could not destroy the Law that had governed
Nol'Burim for so long. So instead they tasked the Troupe Necromancer
with taking the young man to the mainlands, to learn to govern and
continue his studies. His eldest uncle would rule in his absense.
Heartbroken and disilluioned over the death of his Mother, the young
Acitavian was dropped off and left alone in the city of Galadon at the
door of the Necromancer's guild. For the first time in his life he was
truly alone, though the Magician left him with a present: the mummified
remains of his mother, which the little coin he left Nol'Burim with
allowed him to store safely in the city of Udgaard.
Soon after his journey began he realized there would be no more aid
from his ancestral home. If he was to avenge his mother he would have to
do it on his own.
He would have to make something of himself in this land.
Character Traits
Added Wed Jul 8 00:38:16 2015 at level 1:
-The word that best describes Acitavian at this stage in his life is delusional.
The way in which he was raised left im completely disconnected from normal
emotions. This coupled with his inherently evil nature has turned him into a
control freak who thinks of himself as a sort of demi-god, head and shoulders
above those around him. This manifests in his obsession with his pseudo-royal
background and his disdain for "the peasantry" around him. He places a heavy
emphasis on wealth, culture and etiquette.
-He is obsessed with all things magic, especially the black arts of necromancy.
This is in large part due to the aforementioned fact that he cannot relate to
people other than his own mother. The dead offer him an audience and company
that he is comfortable with. Furthermore he views peasants as utterly useless
and feels that magic could reliably replace them. By turning a vagabond into
an undead servant he sees it as magic lending these people the worth and
usefullness that eldued them in life.
-This fascination with magic has led him to worship Lord Twist as he feels that
the proliferation of magic and it's guild's would lead to a better world.
To this aim he has declared an uncompromising war on the Village and any others
who would worship at altars associated with the BattleRagers. He intends to
preach on behalf of Lord Twist and keep the Veil as thin as possible in tribute.
-He is lost without his mother. While their relationship was not incestuous as
the people of Nol'Burim long rumoured, it was likely heading in that direction.
Often times he will speak to himself as though he is talking to his mother, this
is his way of sharing his intimiate thoughts as though she is still here guiding
him. In reality, she is of course long dead. He maintains her corpse with the
intent of restoring her life once he unlocks the magical secrets of life and death.
-He is fond of the Inn of the Eternal Star as they remind him of the Troupe that
came for his birthday party all those years before. He sees it as a means for the
peasants to entertain him. Furthermore he tolerates the Seekers of Balance for their
service to magic but ultimately considers them to be an insulting replacement for
the void left by the destruction of the Masters of Five Magics. He admires the Empire
greatly but is intimidated by their structure. He seeks to study them futher and
possibly seek the Oath when the time is right.
A Mad World
Added Sat Jul 25 03:00:34 2015 at level 30:
It has been a rough adjustment for Acitavian in the mainlands. No
longer sheltered by the luxuries of wealth he has been forced to
live much like the peasants he despises. As usual he finds the most
comfort amongst the dead. He has taken to locking himself inside
the Knight's Tomb in the Galadonian Graveyard. Here he has focused
himself almost entirely on his magical advancement. He seeks to be
a master of the black arts and is often perplexed by the "magicians"
he meets that could care less about their knowledge of the powers
which magic lends them.
In extension to this he is also confused by how few pay the proper
respect to Lord Twist. He has noticed few are born under the stars
of magic and even those within the Nexus have argued for a "healthy"
(ie. limited) Veil. He finds that their obsession with this petulant
notion of "balance" equally insulting. Yet he tolerates them. For
they war with the BattleRagers.
His disdain has also extended to the Empire. He had expected to find
a home there. He thought it may be a sort of replacement for the
Kingdom which he was forced to leave. But instead of finding massive
wealth and luxury he found a militaristic order in which the Citizens
are forced to pay for their modest comforts. Even the Black Sect failed
to impress him with their rhetoric and posturing. As such he as sworn
off any plans of joining a Theran cabal. He will instead make allies
as appropriate.
He intends to serve Twist and Twist alone in an attempt to bring magic
back to it's former glory. He will continue his studies and begin
plotting his path to the Becoming.
