I was born in Udgaard some sixteen years ago. That much, at least, I know
to be true. Born a twin, my sister was given the name Andanu, and my
mother was a whore. It is with no special shame that I mention this\;
Udgaard is a harsh city, and many they are in these days who find
themselves facing impossible circumstances. Far be it from me to condemn
the woman who, in lieu of death by starvation, trades her virtue for the
price of bread. I have endured much, but were I in her place I would fare
no better. Neither Andanu nor I know the details, but we gather our mother
died young, and we were subsequently sold into slavery.
Our earliest years were actually pleasant, being too young to effectively
serve, but at the age of five it was determined that our service should
begin in earnest. For me this meant serving as a courier, tending to the
Mistress's small garden and, if you can believe it, taking lessons with a
tutor. This latter was not for my own benefit, of course\; an educated
slave is worth more than an illiterate one any day of the week, and no
shrewd master would ignore the opportunity to increase the value of his
property. For Andanu it meant other tasks: working in the kitchen,
scrubbing floors, cleaning pots and pans. Unlike me, she was not given
the benefit of an education. At the time I envied her, not having to sit
under a tutor as I did. Such is the foolishness of children.
And so our lives went for the next ten years. Back breaking labor and
frequent abuse at the hands of the Master and Mistress. Still, we took
solace in each others' company, and somehow managed to thrive. To this
day I wonder whether the hand of some deity might have been upon us,
shielding us from the damaging effects of our daily work. As we grew into
adulthood I excelled at my lessons and Andanu became a beautiful young
woman. It was this latter, in fact, that would be the set into motion the
events that would change our lives.

I should say that we were not the only children in the household during
these years. There was another: Azarkand. He was the Master's son and
heir to his vast fortune. And, oddly enough, unlike him in every way save
his penchant for cruelty. Growing up we shared the same tutor. Whereas I
excelled, dutifully attending my lessons for fear of punishment, he was
lazy and disobedient, lording his position over our tutor. His father,
the Master, did nothing to curtail this behavior, and so it continued for
the whole of our joint education. It is only now, after the fact, that I
realize the full extent to which he grew to hate me.
And yet his hatred was frustrated. The Master was cruel, like his son,
but not stupid, and certainly not wasteful. He forbade Azarkand from
striking at me directly, or else I might have died before even reaching
maturity. So Azarkand turned to the one avenue left to him through which
he might torment me: Andanu. Of course it didn't hurt that by this time
she was an attractive young woman. I caught him the first time he tried,
before he could do her any harm, and would have killed him on the spot had
I not know what that would mean for Andanu and I. Instead I planned.
Now it was the Master's custom to buy his slaves in pairs. Usually
siblings, though sometimes also sets of parents and children. The bond I
shared with Andanu was in fact thorougly intentional on his part. What
good would I be if I had to be accompanied by guards every time I left the
residence? No good at all. And so he resorted to ransom. Andanu and I
both occasionally went into the larger city alone, but never together.
When one was away the other was always closely guarded. It was clear to
both of us what would happen if either attempted escape. We were trapped.
escape
Added Sat Jan 23 20:49:55 2010 at level 21:
Of course I tried to persuade Andanu to leave anyway, despite what it would
mean for me. To her credit, she would not. It became clear that if she
were ever going to leave, it would be because she believed one of two
things to be true: that I was dead, or that I had abandoned her and
escaped myself. However, if she left thinking I was dead, I knew she
might return in some ill-advised attempt to avenge me. So that would not
do. In order to guarantee her freedom I would need to betray her, or at
least seem to. The brother she had known would die, replaced by one who
had betrayed and abandoned her. But she would be safe.
There was a man in town we knew by the name of Galladrim. He had
befriended us when we were still children, during the brief occasions we
had to travel outside the residence. We knew very little about him, but
somehow instintively knew he could be trusted. Perhaps he sensed the same
in us. It is a rare quality in Loke's City. It was Galladrim, then, that
I sought out the next time I was sent into town. He listened as I
explained my plan, why it was necessary, what it would mean for me, and
what exactly I wanted him to do. He said nothing as I spoke, instead
scrutinizing me with an odd, unreadable expression.
He paused as the last words tumbled out of my mouth, regarding me once
more in silence. When he at last spoke it was in a different voice than I
had ever heard him use before. Whereas in the past he had been cheerful
and encouraging, now his voice was solemn. Tinged, I now see, with a
measure of sadness I was not yet able to comprehend. He agreed to my
request and, before I could turn to leave, clasped my hand and arm in a
gesture one might expect to see between soldiers. It seemed a strange
thing to me, at the time, but now I see that it was entirely appropriate.
I reviewed the plan in my mind as I walked home. Galladrim would arrange
safe passage for Andanu out of the city and for her care once she was safe.
He would do this using a network of contacts, such that even he himself
would be left ignorant of her eventual destination. Clearly I would be as
well. When Andanu was next sent into the city, Galladrim would approach
her with the urgent news that I had somehow managed to escape on my own,
and that it was not safe for her to return home. She would then be
smuggled out of the city and to safety. For my part, I would go about my
tasks as if nothing were amiss, so as not to arouse suspicion. Then I
would die.
sacrifice

There was not long to wait; Andanu was sent out the very next day. I saw
her leave as I was dealing with some deliverymen in the courtyard. She
smiled at me but, realizing I had not the time to talk, turned and slipped
out the gates without a word. It was the last time I would see her.
Once the deliverymen were dealt with I moved on to the next task, and then
the next, being careful to act naturally. The dread I had initially felt
when had faded by this point, replaced by a strange peace at what lay
before me. There was sadness, yes, but also joy at the fact that Andanu
would soon be free.
The guards found me in the wine cellar taking inventory. No words were
spoken when they seized me. No words were necessary. I was taken to the
center of the courtyard and tied to a post that had been built there years
ago for precisely this use. Such punishment relies greatly on theatrics
to convey its deterrent effect, and so the other slaves where assembled in
the courtyard with a grim sense of ceremony.
The Master glanced at me once, clearly irritated by the fact that he was
about to destroy a valuable piece of property, then signaled to a jaette
guard. The guard lumbered towards me, then stopped nearly as soon as he
had begun. The Master had signaled again, and was now engaged in a
spirited discussion with Azarkand. I soon found out the topic of their
argument. With a third signal the guard retreated back to his original
position and Azarkand strode forward to take his place.
Whereas in the jaette's eyes I had seen only a brutish love of violence,
in the son's eyes I saw far more. Hatred, childish glee and exultation
all mingled together as he took the short iron cudgel from the jaette's
meaty hand. Hefting it, he set about his task with abandon. To be
honest, I don't remember much after the first blow, and for that I am
grateful. My jaw was shattered. Cheek bone as well. Several ribs were
broken, along with one leg and the fingers of one hand. At some point
Azarkand must have traded the cudgel for a whip, for I bear its marks the
scars even today. When at last he tired of his sport the guard was
summoned again. Lifting my now limp body, he tossed it out onto the
street like so much refuse.
the gift

Galladrim had to admit, the boy showed courage. Perhaps it was courage
built on an imperfect knowledge of what lay ahead, but it was courage all
the same. He said a brief prayer, thew drew tight his cloak and settled
down to wait. His part in the boy's scheme was complete, and he knew it
would not be long before the latter was dead. He could not stop what was
about to happen, but he determined to at least see that the boy received a
burial worth of his sacrifice. Presently he watched, seeming not to
watch, as the corpse was tossed out onto the street. Once the gates were
shut he bent and gently lifted it onto his shoulders. This evoked almost
no interest from the passers by, accustomed as they were to the dark
dealings of the Udgaard's mages.
He made for the west gate. Past it was the ruined village, and past that
the mountains. There he would rendezvous with others from his order and
hand the body over to be buried. Because of the way he was forced to
carry the body, the boy's hand dangled in front of his face, fingers
bouncing limply with each of his strides. And yet, not so limply after
all. One finger twitched, then was still. How could he have been so
foolish! He reversed course, slowly, so as not to arouse the curioisty of
the the men-at-arms, and struck out for the south gate instead. He knew
his own powers were not sufficient to save the boy's life, but if he could
just preserve long enough to reach Voralian City, perhaps there was still
hope...
healing
Added Sat Jan 23 20:52:09 2010 at level 21:
Ageryn's life as a freedman began in the Voralian City healer's guild.
It was painful and grueling. Galladrim's connections had earned him the
best care available, but even that was scarcely enough to keep him alive.
The injuries he sustained in Udgaard were quite severe, and to some degree
would plague him for the rest of his life. Large swaths of facial bone
had been pulverized by the stroke of the cudgel. The healer's prayers
willed it to regrow, but the result was imperfect. His right eye was now
lower than the left, and the entire right side of his face seemed to
droop. It took months of painful physical therapy before he could walk
again without a limp.
Things that he once did without thought now required intense
concentration. Yet this "relearning" had a profound side effect.
Whereas before his movements had been unconscious and natural, now they
were precise and intentional. Shuowuon's physical rehabilitation forced
him to acquaint himself with the exact workings of his body, eventually
resulting in a focused grace he hhad never possessed before. During this
time he also flirted with the idea of joining the guild of healers, no
doubt motivated by gratitude at the kindness it had shown him, but was
dissuaded from it by no less than guildmaster Jhanderin himself.
Jhanderin perceived a goodness in Ageryn, but also something else. The
cunning and subterfuge with which he had engineered his sister's escape,
his newfound dexterity, and the simple fact that he seemed unable to
concentrate long enough to complete a decent prayer, moved Jhanderin to
instead refer him to one Jirash, an acquaintance of his across town. He
knew Jirash to be a beacon of light among an otherwise dark profession;
perhaps he could turn the boy into a scout of some sort....

To the end of his days, Ageryn would never understand why Jhanderin
occasionally called him by the nickname "Shuowuon". Crazy old coot.
strength and weakness
Added Mon Feb 22 21:46:24 2010 at level 42:
Since his chat with Nnaeshuk prior to becoming a squire, Ageryn has been
pondering the nature of his past injuries and present deformity. Seeing
the captain for the first time and the extent of his injuries has helped
Ageryn put things things in perspective to some extent. It has also
created a certain feeling of kinship between himself and the captain,
though Ageryn does not presume to suppose Nnaeshuk feels the same.
Over time Ageryn has come to realize that all those who serve in the
fortress are "damaged" in one way or another, whether visibly or not. No
man is perfect, and no man escapes the corrosive influence of the darkness
that infects this land. Some, such as Ageryn and Nnaeshuk, wear the
physical evidence of their past suffering for all to see. Others bear
their wounds where they cannot be seen: unable to trust, quick to anger,
feeling shame where they ought not. Creation's fallen state has affected
all men, and those who serve in the fortress are not immune.
At the same time, though, Ageryn believes these flaws, which would be
considered a weakness within the Empire, with its relentless pursuit of
perfection, are in fact a great gift. Where there is hurt there can be
healing; where there are disputes there can be forgiveness; where there
is sorrow there can be shown comfort. These are foreign to the black of
heart; they perceive weakness only in the most rudimentary sense: a lack
of power. They do not understand, and are perhaps incapable of
understanding, that it is only through weakness that the greatest strength
can be revealed. The strength to perserve. The strength to overcome.
The strength to sacrifice one's self.

Ageryn has been thinking since his chat with Arlettien the other day.
Talking about the past, and Andanu, reopened some old wounds he thought
had healed. There are many within the Fortress he cares about, and who
care about him, but Ageryn still feels disconnected somehow. The
knowledge that his sister lives, somewhere, and still thinks him a
traitor, gnaws at him. And so he has decided to do something about it.
Ageryn's initial idea was to contract a bard to send a missive across all
Thera. Surely if it was distributed widely enough it would reach Andanu.
Unfortunately, however, such a wide distribution would mean it might also
draw the attention of their old master in Udgaard, or his cruel son.
Alerting them in any way to Andanu's continued existence or whereabouts
would be unacceptable.
If his spies could uncover her location, he could approach his sister
directly, but thus far they have proven unable to provide any help. What
is left to him then? It occurs to Ageryn that, since beginning his
service as a Squire, he has been in contact with a being of immense power.
One whose magic transcends time and space, and who holds congress with
all manner of angelic beings. Perhaps this one might help him find his
sister...

It has been nearly a year now since the Planeswalker sent Andanu a vision
on my behalf, explaining the truth of the events that led to our freedom.
I have heard nothing. The silence is deafening, but I still hold out hope
that she is well, somewhere, and simply needs more time to process this
new information. After all, for the majority of her life she has thought
me to be the worst type of traitor.
In the mean time, I've also begun to wonder whether I should take a second
name. The majority of those with whom I serve in the Fortress seem to
bear some familial name, but I have none. As a slave I was called only
'Ageryn', and I know next to nothing about my mother, much less my father.
It would seem, then, that if I am to bear a second name, it must be one of
my own choosing, or given to me by another. Perhaps something meaningful
could be found in the Lyceum...

Ageryn would still think about his sister sometimes, but he had long since
given up on ever seeing her again. After all it had been years since
Adekar sent her the vision, and to his knowledge she had made no attempt
to contact him. He assumed she couldn't bring herself to forgive him, or
else mistrusted the vision she received. Either way, there was little he
could do about it.
Until now.
It seems Ageryn has drawn the attention of...something...that claims to
have knowledge of Andanu's whereabouts. The Eye in the Darkness. It
is attracted to death and the grave and revels in shadow. An unsavory
being to be sure. However, as he considers himself powerless to shield
himself from its attention, thus far Ageryn has interacted with it in an
effort to determine its origins and intent.
Now he has another reason: Andanu. The eye fancies itself a collector of
information, and claims to know her whereabouts. Could he pry this
information from it somehow? If it were offered, what would be the price?
Or the more relevant question: what price would he be willing to pay?
tested
Added Fri May 14 22:48:45 2010 at level 51:
The Shadow Lord's blood still fresh on his blade, Ageryn receded back into
the shadows. But he was not alone. The Eye was there with him. Perhaps
it had always been there. In any case, it seemed emboldened by the blood
he had spilled. Truth be told, Ageryn had all but given up on his shadowy
visitor, having not heard a peep from it in more than a year's time. And
yet here it was again, as if no time had passed at all.
He was determined to press his case this time, and learn what it knew of
his sister. Previously the Eye had been reticent to name a price. This
time he would have one, even though he knew, somehow, it would be one he
could not pay. And he had his answer.
"Show me somewhere I haven't seen," said the Eye, always petulant. Was
that it? Was that all he must do to get what he wanted? This was a price
he could pay. Turning, Ageryn set off for one of the deepest, darkest,
most vile places he could think of. Perhaps that would appeal to this
foul thing. Before he could turn, though, suddenly it was -inside- him.
He could feel its alien presence worm its way into his mind, insinuating
itself into his eveyr thought. He was helpless to expel it.
The only thing, then, was to carry on. And so he set off for the
Underdark. Once there, of course, came the bait and switch. The Eye did
not merely wish to see this place, it wished to mark it. Why? He could
not say, but it seemed the sigil would make a pathway for it to enter his
world more easily. This, finally, was the price. And, as he had probably
always known, he must refuse it.
strength renewed
Added Fri May 14 22:51:55 2010 at level 51:
The Eye gone, back at the Fotress, Ageryn sought counsel from the priest,
Eylar. One of his most trusted men, and one in tune with things of the
spirit, perhaps Eylar could cleanse him of the lingering taint he felt
within him. A memory of the thing that had inhabited his body? Or
something else?
As it turns out, something else. As soon as Eylar began his reverie, a
baleful hiss issued forth as if from the shadows themselves. The Eye had
not gone at all, in fact, but was driven out by the paladin's prayers.
None too happy at this, it cursed Eylar, and vowed that its business with
Ageryn was not finished.
Could he endure another visit? Would this next one be the occasion on
which his will finally broke, and he gave in to his desire to learn of his
sister's whereabouts? Ageryn was an old man, but his health had been
sustained in part by the orb itself. Andanu, if she still lived, would be
older still, and perhaps long for this earth. If he was ever to reuinte
with her it would have to be soon. The Eye, he suspected, knew this.
He needed more than Eylar's prayers; he needed his own. Ageryn needed
strength beyond what he himself was capable of summoning. He would draw
it from the generations of Maran who walked the Fortress walls before him.
He would draw it from the cause to which they gave their lives. He would
draw it from the example of him who led them, in those dark, early days.
Ageryn would call upon the Phoenix.
