Description

His eyes seem like the reflection of a setting sun, large and golden with a bewitching shimmer, but what is most remarkable about this elf is his lack As smooth as a falling snowflake, his pate is closely shorn, and that brings greater emphasis to his narrow face, his severe expression, and those eyes. He moves with the customary grace of his elven people, flowing and silent, and his attire accentuates that fluidity by its loose fit and trim lines. Curiously, a soiled, somewhat ragged, piece of cloth is tied around his left wrist.

Extraordinary Times

The assassin walked through the hallways of the monastery, pausing
occasionally to tend to the occasional scrape he received during his
indiscriminate bout of killing. No monks were safe. No one came to
their aid. And none of the monks adopted a protective stance.

As the assassin, disdaining an pretense of secrecry, roamed the halls
and struck as the monks slowly filed into the hall to eat their one
meal a day. One by one they slumped to the ground, and per their training
Ajanfindel, a novice, watched as the assassin walked behind the monks
and systematically squeezed their throats. The less-disciplined monks
glanced around, but their training forbade violence. Panic filled the elf-child,
and he slipped a wooden bread knife into his sleeve. 

By the time the assassin stood behind Beerink, Ajanfindel hade made up his mind.
He let the bread knife fall into his hand, and as the hands closed around the
monk, the elf plunged the knife into the assassin's thigh. Startled, the assassin
reflexively backhanded the child, knocking him into unconsciousness.

Extraordinary Measures

The following morning, Ajanfindel stumbled out of his cell
unsure how he returned to his pallet or what had happened
after the incident at dinner. His head yet throbbed, but he had
chores to do before morning classes began.

He nodded as he entered the kitchens to begin his usual chore of
fetching water from the well for the midday stew. He received glares
but no harsh words for his tardiness, and after he had filled the
cauldrons he went to the herb garden for fresh chives.  When he returned,
he placed the greens on the counter and bowed, dismissing himself to class.

The boys assembled as Feristle shuffled into the room. Organizing his notes,
he asked the students, 'Are people inherently violent or passive in nature?'

Novices tossed out their ideas, and then Feristle did something out of the norm:
'Ajanfindel, your thoughts?

'Master, we are taught that both natures exist within us, and that we each must decide
whether we are to embrace the tiger or the hare.'

'Yesterday you embraced the tiger, Novice. Why did you not adopt the stance of the hare?

'Forgive me, Master. I do not know.'

'Then it is time for you to leave the monastery. You much discover your nature.

Preface

Ajanfindel was an oddity, a elf raised by monks from the
day he was left as an infant before the rope bridge
leading to the Monastery of Moudrilar.

Desiring peace, he has found himself thrust into a violent world
following his exile from the monastery. He believes that evil is
very real, and that what allows evil to persist is the failure of
society to stand up against it. For this reason he has allied himself
with the remnants of the Brigade
to preserve peace, its laws can be used for evil purposes.

Nightmares

"Failure," the dry voice whispered.

Ajanfindel's world was in slow motion as he lashed out with his knife.
The assassin smirked as the wooden knife dug into his leg, then casually
twisted the head of the monk. "Is that the best you can do? Do you really hope to save them?"

"Do you really hope to save yourself?"

Running through the Emerald forests, Maddie's hand sweaty in his small hand.
Another goblin popping up, attacking them, fangs bared in a smile.

The whisper again, "Is the murderer of murders anything other than a murderer?"

"You will never be safe from us. Even in your dreams."

"Come Ajanfindel, you just want to be the hero. So tell us YOUR story."

Ajanfindel woke up, bathed in sweat. He clutched Maddie's handkerchief in his hand.
He had made a difference in -her- life.

The young elf tied the handkerchief around his wrist as a reminder.

Contemplations on War

Staring out over the cliffs, Ajanfindel watched the waves wage battle
against the rock. As far as his gaze reached, waves formed rank and
file on the Dragon Sea, battering the shore with their warcries.

'War is infinite and inevitable,' Ajanfindel muttered. His eyes
continued to stare out over the water and docks of Hamsah Mutazz.
Panmorne's words lingered like the stain of algae on the rocks.
Conflicting desires. Does the sea wish to escape?

He closed his eyes and let the cool breeze play over his face and caress
his bare scalp. The roar of the surf was a low throb in his ears and
the tang of brine filled his nose.

He could imagine the waves breaking against the jetty, and the relative
calm of the cove sheltered from the wind.

War was motive wed with action. To build a peace, you must neutralize
either of these factors.

'Yes, Lord, hungry men will fight over an apple. You are right to raise
a garden of tomatos.

Brother Chetush

The whispers between squires flew like mosquitoes through the grey halls,
as Lord Korsgaard spoke in private in the Hall of Light with Brother Theorendus.
In general agreement in the flitting gossip, the fighting priest would be made Captain, 
and a small cavalcade of well-wishers and curious souls gathered at the altar.
Marshall Deiramor gathered as well, and the rumors fell silent as though a chill
had frozen their wings and incessant buzz.


When the Watcher bowed at the entrance of Lord Korsgaard, and hailed Brother Theorendus as Captain,
a cheer resounded through the halls of the Fortress. Notably, Brother Chetush was not present.
During the appointment of the Captain, Brother Chetush was afield, and as word spread of the ceremony,
Chetush quietly disappeared, and has since not been seen again.


Many successes have come into the hands of Brother Chetush, and compared to many his battles and
life were easily won. He will be missed, but more than his knowledge, prowess, and charity will be missed
his true potential. He could have been the captain, if only he understood the full compass
of what leadership is.
