Description

This elderly half-elven woman carries herself with an air of quiet authority. Her hazel-eyed gaze is sharp, and she surveys her surroundings routinely, even when relaxing. She stands at a height of 5'5 and has a build that is neither slender nor curvy. Wavy brunette hair with a faint halo of frizz falls just past her shoulders. Her clothing is of simple make, often favoring plain breeches and a linen top to wear under her armor. The tattoo on her forearm is never covered, allowing thin smoke tendrils to waft from it as she walks. Her ever-present backpack is stuffed to the brim with all manner of knick-knacks. A thin necklace suspends a broken charm of an upside down dagger to rest in the hollow of her neck. The half of the blade that remains is a dull silver that features a glinting emerald at the pommel to catch and reflect ambient light. A diamond wedding ring is worn proudly, polished and buffed to an immaculate shine.

Chapter 1 - Maemet, Age 25:

Chapter 1 - Maemet, Age 25:

The best day of Maemet Rekasal's life was the day her daughter - Alcevia - was
born. The Inn of the Eternal Star was filled with her friends, family, and
those of other cabals who wanted to congratulate their favorite painter-bard.
While her husband had perished months earlier, Maemet's strength was renewed
when that hazel-eyed girl cooed and giggled at one of the Inn's performers
making silly faces. Maemet dreamed of her daughter attending Aubade, but she
would be content with any path that she chose. The life of a Herald was rich
in camaraderie, alcohol, and parties, but they certainly didn't make the
amount of coin that her late-Imperial husband had. Even with the taxes, the
young family had never worried about affording food or the canvases and paints
for Maemet's art.

Maemet's brilliant smile faltered under the glow of the tale-telling fire.
Unknown to her at this moment, the revelry of the best day would lead her to
making a choice that would echo through the remainder of her life, and much of
Alcevia's. Her bank balance was declining rapidly, especially after she filled
the nursery with hand-painted mobiles and murals for her daughter. Even with
that difficult truth, Maemet couldn't bring herself to ask the other Heralds
for a loan. Instead, she found one of the sultan's men and stomached the terms
by holding her swaddled daughter closer to her chest.

Of course she'd be able to pay it all back. Her paintings hadn't sold quite as
well lately, but the burgeoning war between the Village and the Empire meant
that her usual clients didn't have the funds for Maemet's portraits. The
sultan's man smiled cruelly and requested a bloody thumbprint to seal the
terms of their deal. But when Maemet fell asleep that night, her nightmares
were blessedly banished.

Chapter 1 - Alcevia, Age 14:

Chapter 1 - Alcevia, Age 14:

Despite her hunger pangs, Alcevia ignored the pemmican and dried fruit lunch
that her mother had left. Maybe if she left it until Maemet returned home, her
mother would finally eat. They were both too thin, and the last six years of
strife and reminders about her mother's debt had created a rift between the
two women. They no longer sang together when Maemet travelled to the docks to
play for the sailors. Instead, Alcevia made her way to the Mason's Guild to
earn a few silver to add to the ever growing sum that they owed. But on this
day, the masons were awaiting a shipment from Seantryn Modan, and Alcevia had
the afternoon free to spend with her best friend, Kaleri.

Kaleri's family was also poor. They lived in the same alley and passed the
time telling stories to each other and making corn-husk dolls out of produce
that didn't sell. Unlike Alcevia, Kaleri's family had hope. They were poor due
to circumstance. Kaleri's father was injured in a fishing expedition and her
brother was a drunkard. But when his purse and wine bottle were empty, he
returned home. Kaleri's family owed no debts, so they spent time fantasizing
about what life would be like if they were daughters of noble family.

Alcevia started off, as she often did, narrating the scene to Kaleri:

"Well, my mom would be dressed in an emerald dress and she'd be visiting your
family at the edge of the lake. We'd have a picnic, I guess."

Kaleri grabs a selection of corn husk dolls and tosses them onto a blue
blanket 'lake'. As she does, Alcevia's smile cracks and breaks. She turns away
to mime a cough, but her keen-eyed friend noticed and tried her best to pull
the story back. Kaleri adds:

"My mother would have brought wine and her latest embroidery projec-."

Embroidery. Kaleri was too lost in the daydream to remember that it was too
damned close to painting. Alcevia's cracked lips tighten into a thin line and
she tries in vain to forget that her mother had stopped painting and spending
time at the Inn once the sultan's man visited their home. He warned Maemet
that he'd tell every Herald and all her clients that she was a filthy whore
who didn't pay her debts. The sultan's debt-collectors demanded she find some
other way to make up the balance - her 'art' clearly wasn't enough.

With their midday ruined by Alcevia's mood, she and Kaleri leave the dolls at
home and decide to go people watching in the Temple with a bottle of ale. Many
of their days ended with this silent, hazy reflection on their fates.

Chapter 2 - Maemet, Age 39:

Chapter 2 - Maemet, Age 39:

Maemet returned home to see the lunch she left on the table for Alcevia. After
a difficult day with a few too many handsy sailors, her daughter's
stubbornness was too much to tolerate. She yelled through the thin door,
waking Alcevia up from a fitful sleep.

"I made this for you, Alcevia. You're never going to make it into Aubade if
you're wan and moody. You need to come out and eat. NOW!"

Her daughter's ire hurt worse than the sneers of the men that threw her
coppers for her songs. It was always this way between them, and Alcevia always
thought she knew better. Case in point, her daughter's reply was razor-sharp,

"How about you eat it so that YOU can play your songs without falling
half-asleep from exhaustion? Maybe if you did that instead of taking some
stupid loan, we wouldn't be in this MESS. Were you DRUNK?"

Maemet didn't answer. Alcevia spent enough time at the Inn when she was young
to know that the other Heralds would have paid off the debt. Every ounce of
bitterness was earned, and warm tears streamed down the painter's face as she
tried to mend the rift with a simple, "Good night, Alcevia. I love you."

Chapter 2 - Alcevia, Age 19:

Through a few strokes of luck - and some petty thievery - Alcevia paid off the
family's debt. It had taken a toll on them both. She was no longer keen on
applying to Aubade, and was considering taking up an offer of mentorship from
a priestess at the Temple. Mentorship was free. Aubade required tuition, and
there was no way that she was going to go into debt and end up like her
mother.

Alas, Maemet's recurring cough was getting worse by the day, and after a
particularly bad spell of dry hacking and gasping breaths, Alcevia could hold
off on her decision no longer. She spoke to her mother in a quiet,
authoritative voice,

"I'm going to Priestess Jenaya. She said she'd cure you if I agreed to study
under Lord Nycruvae's faith with her."

It was a contract, but the debt would be paid instantly. It almost felt like
Alcevia wasn't paying anything at all. Her mother would be cured and Alcevia's
life was laid out before her, with no chance of her ever going hungry again.
In a weak voice, her mother countered,

"You won't get to choose again, Alcevia. We can save up for a few more years
and you can still go to Aubade. If you take Jenaya's offer, you'll be a
priestess for life."

Alcevia snorts derisively and replied to her mother as she walks out the door:
"I'm doing this because I love you. No more years-long debts, mother. We'll
both be happy and healthy."

Chapter 3 - Maemet, Age 42:

Alcevia's promise had paid off. They were both healthy, and Alcevia had
learned enough to make her first solitary pilgrimage to her Lord's shrine.
There was a bowl of fresh fruit on the table and Maemet was left alone for the
first time in years.

A bittersweet smile tugged at the corners of her mouth as she found an old
canvas and some dried out paints in a chest deep in the attic. Her hands shook
as she mixed the oils and pigments, but her strokes were true. Her final
portrait was that of her daughter - clad in the regalia of her faith,
clutching a homemade corn husk doll.

Chapter 3 - Alcevia, Age 22:

Jenaya was waiting for Alcevia in the general store within Aturi when Alcevia
returned from her pilgrimage. The older woman - one who was bound to the
younger priestess by concern and faith - asked quietly: "How was it?"

Alcevia breathes in deeply and offers to walk with her mentor through the
fields. Their Lord's faith was misunderstood by some, so it was better to talk
under the sunlight. As the grasses swished around their ankles, Alcevia
joyfully recounted her tale:

"It felt just like you said it would. Seeing the Ledger, feeling the warmth of
the other faithful... it felt like home, Jenaya. I cannot wait to grow in the
faith."

And truly, it did. Through many lessons, Jenaya showed Alcevia that debt was
the way of the world, and her mother's only fault was loving her so much that
she took on a debt that she couldn't repay. The elder priestess asked the
question that had been on her mind since the start,

"Well, what are you going to do now?"

Silence stretched between them, mimicking the forced introspection between
Alcevia and Kaleri from all those years before. Finally, Alcevia admitted what
they both knew to be true:

"I'm going to join the Heralds. I'll do it differently than she did, though.
I'm not going to just let people into the Lyceum for free. They'll owe me...
something."

Jenaya sighed, but knew better than to suggest that Alcevia join the Empire
again. She didn't have the heart for it. Petty thievery was a start, but the
Empire demanded far more than that.

"It's going to be difficult, Alcevia. You're risking a lot, but I know how you
feel. You've told me over and over how much you hated all the adventurers that
would come to the Inn expecting the Heralds to perform and amuse them for
free, like they were a free, travelling circus."

Alcevia nods sharply and pipes back up as they circle back towards Seantryn
Modan: "I'm glad you understand."

Jenaya did understand, even if her young mentee was only learning the true
nature of debts, faith, and the bonds between cabalmates.

Chapter 4 - Alcevia, Age 72

Alcevia promised her mentor that she'd join the Heralds and her Lord's church,
and she has succeeded at both.

However, the balancing act of being a Herald focused on debts and contracts
doesn't differ much from what her mother endured. There are still debts, and
she is seen as a novelty. The key difference is that *Alcevia* is making the
terms, not just accepting them. This doesn't deaden the anxiety she feels at
owing another, but she would rather be a collector than a debtor.

Her contract with her Lord was accepted, and she has written several contracts
with the Emperor, various thieves, and those that she journeys with. Each of
these contracts echoes her initial conversation in the Head Office. If Alcevia
wishes to be recognized, loved, and able to ask favors of nearly anyone, she
must walk the tightrope of building her connections between feuding allies
while remaining generous and helpful.

She divides her time and artistry between all of the cabals, though she has
the most allies within the Heralds, Empire, and Spire.

Three grand goals have occupied her time lately:

1) She wishes for a better understanding of the faith and the nature of
obligations. Are her contracts ideal for the Ledger or simply tolerable? She
has spoken on the Allegories with Wurment and Thrakal and they have a
different interpretation from her and each other.

2) She has offered her blood to the newly awoken Vampyre Quillan at most any
time, with the caveat that if she asks him to leave the city (and his post as
a magistrate), he will. While she hopes she doesn't need to leverage this
particular bargain, it will ensure that those who shirk on their debts cannot
hide in the city. If she has an ally to fight in her name, her foes will find
Quillan gone when they need him the most. He considers this deal, but is
clearly conflicted due to his loyalty to the Spire. Alcevia knows the value of
her blood and believes she can convince him.

3) Lastly, Alcevia seeks a particularly ruinous deal with the Morian shaman,
Malthis. They have flirted back and forth and are somewhat close.

The thought of a binding debt that would give her a loyal ally that only puts
their faith above her is utterly intoxicating. She knows that the Lord of Sin
is envious and would not wish one of his faithful to be connected to anyone so
strongly. It will likely pull Malthis apart, but this level of risk and
enmeshment feels like the contract she alone could write. It is far more
compelling than simple agreements to journey together or some bland
tit-for-tat trade.

Though she is ambitious, Alcevia doubts that Malthis would be truthful and
commit in earnest. He does not truly care for her - he cares for the idea of a
woman who dotes upon him and praises him. He is a Morian to a fault. But if
not him, there are others. Someone, somewhere will eventually adore her and be
willing to give up so much of themselves for her attention and love. The
question that keeps her up at night is whether she'll be able to keep the
contract in her favor if she truly cares for them.

Chapter 5 - Alcevia, Age 95

Added Tue Mar 10 15:16:26 2026 at level 51:
Alcevia's easy entrance into the life of a priestess of Nycruvae has proven to
be more of a bane than a boon. That is the nature of the faith - any deal that
seems too good to be true likely means that one didn't consider all the
consequences of the choice. (Or, perhaps, that they don't intend to take
accountability for their decision, but Alcevia remains committed, if
self-conscious and fumbling).

She struggles with her desire to prove herself. Until now, the formula has
been simple: write a contract, act on it, and hope it is accepted for the
Ledger. If a contract doesn't make it into the Ledger, the other party is none
the wiser. None have refused to pay, and Alcevia holds the shame for failing
without telling anyone that they were lesser versions of what she seeks to
write.

For now, she tries to bring others into the faith, to quell her petty hatred
of Nathalias, and to write better contracts. Alcevia is thrilled that no one
has (openly) complained about a Nycruvian Herald and is all the more confident
that she can punish those who owe her debts with how well liked she is.

Chapter 6 - Alcevia, Age 133

Added Fri Apr 3 01:36:59 2026 at level 51:
Chapter 6 - Alcevia, Age 133

Alcevia's petty dislike of Nathalias evolved into abject disdain after the
Imperial insulted and mocked her. Believing the human to be of poor quality
for the faith, she wrote a contract with the Emperor to prevent Nathalias from
being promoted to High Priest. Kuvurru offered the same promise without any
need for payment, though Alcevia still wishes to see this codified into the
Ledger.

In terms of the other followers, she feels that Kishano and Wurment have the
most potential, while almost all the others have disappointed her by not being
zealous enough. Alcevia believes that if she were a leader of a cabal, she
would have even more leverage to make deals and would serve her Lord to a
greater degree. Still, she tries to meet with the faithful to learn of their
goals and see who has potential.

Alcevia has also been working on her web of influence, though she has found
that most of the Fortress cannot be trusted to pay their debts. The Marshall
and Captain's staunch defense of a lying squire (Helion) demonstrates that
they care for their own more than their moral code.

As time progresses, Alcevia wonders whether she is merely a pawn that Jenaya
set upon the path to Nycruvae's shrine or an individual who decided her own
fate. For all that the half-elven priestess criticized her mother for
incurring debt and having it rule her life, Alcevia is more preoccupied by
debt than Maemet ever was. Alcevia channels her discomfort into being the best
priestess and Herald possible, believing that the ends will justify the means.
If she is to devote her life to a calling that she did not chose independently,
she will be the greatest among the faithful - at any cost.

Chapter 7 - Alcevia, Age 154

Added Mon Apr 13 04:36:30 2026 at level 51:
Alcevia, Age 154

Years after Alcevia promised herself that she wouldn't follow in her mother's
footsteps, she finally hosted an event where adventurers had to pay their way
in. The fee was nominal and the purse went back to the top three participants
along with some of Alcevia's own gold. It was a small step towards
legitimizing the Heralds as artisans with events that have recognized value
such that participants opt in by their own choice rather than simply showing
up because they had nothing else to do. In a world where those of her cabal
are seen as just 'bartenders' and are expected to perform for free like
trained bears on the Aquavia Montage, Alcevia has accomplished something she
is truly proud of.

Her faith was also featured in the rules of the event, as participants were
bound to the rules if they wished to be eligible for prizes. Even as Alcevia
frantically ran the event without the other Heralds, there was a delightful
aura of orderliness in the Lyceum. Herald events - including Callen's Waltz -
often have squabbling and the occasional unprovoked attack. No one broke the
rules during the Scavenger Hunt - so far as Alcevia could discern. She
understood that part of the compliance was due to Lord Zizaerix's presence,
but sees this as a benefit for all involved. Events should be fun, safe, and
free from the taint of chaos.

She continues to practice her weaving and waits anxiously for her Lord's
assessment of her first piece. Perhaps she is the only one who draws a
connection between Ambition and Obligation. No one else she has spoken to has
viewed them in such a light. Alcevia is adamant that too many obligations
weaken one's ability to conceptualize and achieve their ambitions. Similarly,
too much unfettered ambition leads to unintended obligations and/or a higher
risk of leaving debts unpaid.

She seeks allies in all corners of Thera, though Caserque and Wurment remain
to be her strongest allies and dearest friends. Caserque has a single elven
week left to kill the Outlander cheetah-jaguar. If he does not, Caserque must
die thrice, as he still owes her three names with Vuxa's untimely suicide.
Alcevia is terrified and nauseated that her closest ally will become her enemy
and even more anxious still that she will not be able to collect on this
terribly steep debt. In the best case scenario, he'd take his own life three
times. Caserque agreed to the contract, but if the week passes, would their
friendship survive such a test?

...

Such worries were unfounded. Caserque took his life once at Eshval's shrine in
the Graveyard of the Gods. The first corpse of three. He owes Alcevia two
more, but their friendship will withstand it and be stronger for it.

Chapter 8 - Alcevia, Age 178

Added Mon May 11 13:24:10 2026 at level 51:
Alcevia, Age 178

Alcevia has gotten everything that she has wanted and then some. Despite her
anxious nature and constant questioning of whether she was good enough to
represent her Lord as a priestess, she succeeded in earning a deeper binding.
She wears her tattoo with pride, forearms bared for the world to see her
devotion to the Eternal Ledger.

While many faithful would rest upon their laurels after gaining the favor of
their patron, Alcevia is more ambitious - and anxious - than ever. She must
ensure that this collective of bounty hunters is successful, lest she end up
being another follower of Lord Nycruvae that tried and failed. There's also a
sense of dread and weight that comes with her newest task. If she fails now,
the consequences will be severe enough that she drinks to ignore the very real
cost.

Beyond matters of faith, Alcevia finally confessed her love and adoration for
Caserque and is utterly ecstatic that he feels the same. She knows that
Skriv'n would disapprove, and her Lord presumably won't be too fond of Alcevia
binding herself to another, but the heart wants what it wants.

Now, Alcevia aims to fill her remaining years with the arduous task of
amassing influence while also spending time with her beloved.
