Description

Before you is a felar standing a modest five and a half feet in height. His body is slender with well toned muscles stretching the light brown fur which covers his entire body. His face round and very feline in nature, with pointed ears and a visibe row of sharp teeth. Branded into the side of his cheek is a large rune that covers most of the left side of his face. He is clad in simple clothing, plus his additional armor. A long tail sways slowly behind him. After taking a closer look you determine that:

Role

From Slave to Student

Added Fri Sep 2 06:54:20 2011 at level 1:
Alrael was born to a captive felar within the home of
a sadistic Drow shapeshifter. Fortunately for Alrael
he has little memory of this time. He does however recall
the day he watched his mother tortured to death by the
Drow magician in an experiment that failed totally.
It was not long after the death of his mother that Alrael
was liberated from captivity by a band of golden aura'd
warriors attempting to prove their worth to the Fortress
of Light. Young Alrael was taken from his cage and given
to Sir Kayel Johlesian, a warrior of High Elven heritage.

Kayel taught Alrael the arts of war. He taught the agile
felar to fight with swords (Kayel's personal favourite)
but found that the young warrior was inherently deadly
with his claws. Kayel also taught Alrael to study his
enemy's tactics. To view the battlefield not as anarchy
but like a game of chess. As Alrael grew older he began
to understand what his master meant and even helped the
small band of warriors design battle plans for their
future raids. Alrael was about to go on his first true
strike with his Master when tragedy once again found
the felar.

The Death of Kayel & a Return to Slavery

Added Fri Sep 2 06:55:40 2011 at level 1:
Kayel, Alrael and the same band of men who rescued him
from the Drow in his youth set out to find a band of
Orcs which had been attacking Elven travelers on their
way back to Darsylon from the northern roads. The
intelligence on their location had come from a trusted
contact in Tir-Talanth however upon arriving near the
Vale they found a legion of Imperial soldiers, not a
small band of Orcs.

The band fought bravely despite the odds but in the end
all lay dead or dying, including Sir Kayel. Alrael himself
had been wounded but still continued to fight. As Kayel
drew his last breath he watched his student fighting with
several soldiers and he wondered what the future would hold
for him. If he would have a future at all.

In the end Alrael was subdued. The Imperial commander was
impressed with his prowess and decided to capture him in
hopes of giving him the oath. After bringing their prisoner
back to the Imperial lands a Shaman dismissed him saying that
his aura was far too golden for the oath to have any meaning.
And it was with this that Alrael was sold yet again, but this
time not to a Drow but rather to a gnome.

Alrael's spirit was broken when he arrived at the gnome's manor.
Dahlzel Dahlzan was the gnome's name. A master craftsman he
had made his riches in enchantments before turning to the
Arena for glory to his family's name. Dahlzel, while brilliant
and rich, always felt a bit... small. Both in stature and in
might. Having beasts of men fight on his behalf gave him the
illusion of strength, something his body could never supply.

Dahlzel had purchased the felar only on the story he heard of
the Battle of the Vale. He was eager to see him fight. His
trainer, a brutish fire-born giant by the name of Krauhl took
the felar out into the small training square and branded Alrael's
face with the a warrior caste rune. Before the flesh could even
scar the giant called forth a seasoned human gladiator to test
Alrael's might. The gnome watched from his balcony with excitement
but instead of seeing the amazing feats he'd heard of in the market
place, he saw a felar standing perfectly still getting beaten
senseless by this adversary.

The scene repeated for many days after. With his spirit broken
Alrael simply refused to fight.

Purity of the Spirit

Added Fri Sep 2 06:56:34 2011 at level 1:
Alrael spent many days deep within the bowels of the school for
potential gladiators. He sat curled in the corner of his cell and
prayed, perhaps for the first time in his life, for strength. He
mourned the death of the first person who had been kind to him. And
when it seemed his prayers had not been heard he contemplated death.

Alrael was not the only one considering ending his life. Atop the
school sat the methodical, yet greedy gnome. He told Krauhl that if
the felar did not "earn his keep" that the giant was to end him.

During the day the warriors trained. Sparring each other, attempting
to impress their owner in hopes of a day of glory in the Arena. It was
only from becoming a Champion that one could be freed from these terms
of enslavement and every single warrior was out for himself. All except
one: a young human warrior known only as Red for his firey hair
and beard. Red was not like most in this school, a rugged ex-soldier
he had actually volunteered for this life in hopes of making enough
gold to move himself up a caste within his human homeland and earn
the favour of his would-be wife's family. The other thing that set
Red apart from the rest was his golden aura. He and Alrael were the
only two who walked in the light. Of the twenty or so students only
three others were of the balance and the rest were vile in nature.

Furthermore the two were born under the same stars. With a natural
yearning for combat and war. While it was not in his best interest to
help Alrael he did anyway. Taking him aside each day he trained with
him and spoke with him. After a few weeks Alrael began to adjust to
his new situation, with his new comrade. He fought more fiercly and
impressed his gnome master.

it was during these long months that Red introduced Alrael to the
worship of his matron Goddess, the spear-maiden Baerinika. Alrael was
woefully ignorant of the Gods, except that Kayel had prayed often to
Lord Shokai. Alrael found the strength he had prayed for many moons
earlier in his service to Baerinika. The noble Goddess became his
inspiration on the field of battle and his motivation off it.

With his spirit reforged the time came for Alrael to test himself in
the Arenas of Thera.

Glory in the Arena

Added Fri Sep 2 06:57:34 2011 at level 1:
Alrael found victory easily in the small arenas of Thera. Winning in
impressive fashion in his first ten battles. Red was doing quite well
also notching a record of seventeen victories and no defeats. It seemed
that both gladiators were on the road toward freedom.

Freedom however, wasn't very profitable. And if there was something the
the old gnome loved it was coin. What Dahlzel had in Alrael was a graceful
and powerful warrior. And in Red he had a brutish, well armored Knight.
The entire region was a buzz with talk of the two and the cry for a new
Champion of the Arena.

The last Champion was never truly defeated, at least not by man. He fell
victim to a horrible plague that he caught quite quickly as a cloud giant.
Many whispered that it was Dahlzel who had paid one of the servants in
the rival school to place the infected blankets on the Champions bed, but
these rumours were never proven.

And so Dahlzel hatched what was perhaps his most treacherous plan yet. He
would make the announcement of the battle to name a new Champion of their
Arena. It would be Red, the mercenary Knight against Alrael, the warrior
slave.

Krauhl, despite his limited fire-born intellect, made note that the two
were much like kin depsite their different races. Certainly they would not
fight one another, especially not to the death. The gnome grinned, and
dispatched the fire giant to capture the woman who Red intended to marry
with the gold from his winnings.

After the young woman was contained the gnome took Red aside and explained
to him that if the fight against Alrael did not end in blood then he would
personally bleed out the love of Red's life. Red and Alrael were kept apart
and while the whole region longed for their battle and the crowning of a new
Champion, Alrael was completely ignorant of the coming challenge. He assumed
he was simply to fight another from a rival school.

When the day came Alrael prepared as he always did. A small prayer to the
Spear-Maiden and a thought about Kayel. Nothing could have prepared him for
what he saw when he was led into the Arena. Tragedy was certainly about to
find the felar yet again.

Blood & Freedom

Added Fri Sep 2 06:59:27 2011 at level 1:
When Alrael stepped out toward the center of the Arena he immediately
recognized the shining armor of his foe. His mind went blank, and he did not
know what to do. The beginning ceremony seemed a blur to him. Certainly
his comrade would not try to slay him? If for no other reason than for their
common faith and auras. Alrael did not wait long to receive his answer, a
mere moment after the sounding horn he was struck in the face by Red's mace.

Staggering backwards he began to duck and weave the shots. "What are you doing?"
he hissed, barely audible over the roar of the crowd. "I am sorry brother, it
must be." Red replied. Alrael did not know how to react. He continued to dodge
the shots as they came, faster and faster. He began to have flashbacks to the
Battle of the Vale, where his Master and comrades bled out. As he thought of
Kayel he began to become angry and suddenly it was Red he saw before him, but
one of the Imperial blades from the battle. He stepped inside and parried a
heavy shot, disarming the weapon in the process he jumped and kicked Red just
under the faceshield on his helmet, sending it flying through the air. A mere
moment after Red landed on his back Alrael pounced onto his chest, With one
paw pulling up on Red's beard and the other with a claw firmly at his throat
Alrael prepared to kill his best friend.

He glanced up at the platform. The gnome was clapping wildly and the guest
of honour, a noble from Seantryn Modan gave the thumbs down. The crowd chanted
for Red's blood and Alrael took a deep breath. "Do it." Red said. "Send me to
my Ancestors, and see to my Lady." Alrael looked down at his friend and before
he could answer, or act, a loud cry rang out from the stands.

Alrael looked up to see dozens of men and women pouring over the walls. Arrows
shot at the speed of light and stuck in the chests of the audience. More cries
went up as two cloud-born giants swung axes at the few guards which stormed
into the heat of the battle. Amazed and confused Alrael pulled back from his
friend and helped him to his feet. Their battle would not be with each other
now. But rather with the House of Dahlzan.

Red went straight for the gnome, who proved to be of little challenge for the
human's maces. His death was swift and bloody. Krauhl was not so lucky, as
Alrael took his time in disemboweling the giant with his claws.

Both men, now free. Fought alongside the mysterious army in slaying the last
nobles and slave owners. When Red was reunited with his love he turned and
said good bye to his felar comrade. Red and his wife left the Arena with every
ounce of coin they could carry. Enough to support them for many years, if not
the rest of their lives. It seemed no one else had any interest in gold nor
silver.

Blood & Freedom (cont.)

Added Fri Sep 2 07:00:30 2011 at level 1:
Alrael turned his attention to a half-elven woman who was smiling at him from
a short distance. "Would you have done it?" she asked. "Done... what?" Alrael
answered. "Killed him, of course. Would have been a Champion this day?"
Alrael thought long and hard, though he had no answer. The whole day seemed
like such a blur. He could not even recall what he was thinking at the time.

"It's okay. You're free now. Like all of us." she said as she turned to join
the others walking from the bloodstained arena toward the tree line. "But who
are you?" Alrael replied. "The Outlanders of Thar-Eris. We are the wrath of
the Ancients." And just as swiftly as they had arrived, they were gone.

Alrael left as well. Finding no sign of his liberators he wandered Thera for
the first time in his life. Amazed by the rivers and the trees he took great
solace in the quiet of the night and great pleasure in the rising sun. Four
days after the massacre at the Arena he was nearing the city of Galadon by
way of the Eastern Road. It was here that he came upon a scene he did not
expect to find. Red, the man who he just a few moons before had almost been
forced to slay lie dead at the side of the road. The body of his bride not
far away. The sacks of coins ripped and picked clean. Obviously murdered
for his new found wealth.

The half-elven woman appeared again from the tree line bordering the Grove.
"it was not us." she said. "Though I know who it was. A band of duergar. Your
friend was too bold with his fortune. A shame, really. That one would die
over a rock that shines in the sun."

Much to his surprise it was not grief that gripped him. But rather rage. He
would dedicate his life to insuring that men like Kayel and Red never again
fell victim to the dark hordes. He would slay evil wherever he found it.
Without mercy and without second thought. He would take Kayel's name and
wear it with pride. He would also take his mission and see it through to
bloody end.

He turned back to the Outlander, but once again found nothing but trees.
Who were they? Could he join them? And what of Kayel's Fortress of Light?
Perhaps it was them he should seek? He did not know for sure, but he
intended to find out.

He once again prayed to Baerinika. But not for strength this time, but
rather for her to bless his path toward glory.

Notes on behaviour, beliefs, and speech.

Added Fri Sep 2 07:01:14 2011 at level 1:
1) Alrael is chaotic good. He has been a loner/sheltered most his life
and has no understanding of law. His equates "order" with his life as a
slave and has little use for any law or city which protects the vile
while claiming a noble cause.

2) While Alrael cherishes the Light and understands his mission is to
exterminate the vile he also little patience for the "neutral." Especially
those who accumulate wealth or enforce law. While he does not hunt them
purposely he has absolutely no issue with bleeding one out if he deems it
necessary.

3) Alrael is haunted by the fact that he very well could have slain Red
had the Outlanders not intervened. He does not know if he would have
but he also does not know that he wouldn't have. This bothers him almost
every day and because of this he is very careful not to slay any others
of the Light. Even those who enforce laws or accumulate wealth.

4) He was educated by Kayel, a High Elf. And because of this education he
speaks more clearly than most felar. His speech patterns often very closely
mimic an educated human. However when he becomes angry or flustered he will
forget words such as "the" or "is." For example he may normally say: "The
law is not necessary for the children of the Light." However if he were
frustrated or angry it may come out as "Law not necessary for light-children."
Because of this it is very easy to tell when Alrael is angry.

5) His faith in Baerinika is his foundation for his war. He feels he owes
the Spear-Maiden immensely for lending him strength in the Arenas (even
though the strength probably came from within, he does not know or understand
this.) He intends to repay her in the blood of the vile.

6) He intends to use the remainder of his youth hunting the vile and deciding
on his life's path. It is narrowed down between the Outlanders and the
Fortress. He will seek as much information on both sides of the war as he
can before choosing a side formally.
