Description

This dark-elf's ebony skin glistens, a sheen of blackness that seems almost to swallow up the surrounding light. His face, lean and long, his eyes, glittering violet shards of malice. He is tall for his kind, standing nearly six feet in height, and very lean, slender limbs seeming almost lanky if it were not for the grace with which he holds himself. As the walls caved in, the raucous shouts filled the narrow corridors of the 
minor house in Teth Azaleth.  Being a minor house meant many things, including
being further from the core of the city - and the dubious safety it brought.
Generally though, the greatest threat was others of their own kind, the 
dark-elven spirit that causes them to twist and turn on each other, to 
see their own civilization as the most important thing in the world.

Such arrogance, unimportant in the face of the illithid and their slaves.

As the cries rose up, pain and fury and rage intermixed in a dire dirge,
there was one that rang loud in Alyx's ears.  His own.  The stench of the 
duergar as he picked Alyx up, the rough calloused hands gripping him painfully
and the image of his parents turning tail and running without concern are
all burned deep withing Alyx's mind.

From then on, it was blackness and pain.  Not knowing how long went by, the
child grew into young adulthood in years.  There was little to mark time
by in the blackness, little to be conscious of.

The fires were the first thing that he knew, lighting up the darkness in 
painful light.  The anguished cries of the illithid - echoing directly in
his mind - as they fought and died, slaves coming to the fray and being cut
down indiscriminantly.  Those that brought the light, denizens of the 
unknown world above, had little concern for who they slew in their 
battles here.  Those that live in darkness must have darkness in their
heart.

In the chaos and desparation that followed, Alyx was one of the lucky
ones.  The weight of the umber hulk that pinned him to the ground didn't
crush him.  Instead, he lived, barely able to breathe.  He managed to 
worm his way out - it wasn't his time to die, he supposed - and 
followed the trail of devasation, the fire-melted magma, the litter
of broken arms and armor, to the world above.

The World Above

Alyx found himself in the sewers below the great city of Galadon.  Its
filth and muck coating him now as he wormed his way out of the great
darkness below.  Above he encountered a cacophony, the stench of thousands
enclosed in one filthy place.  He wandered aimlessly at first, realizing
the structure of the place, the lay of the roads.  He lived by stealing,
fighting with the rats for scraps, drinking from the fountains he bathed
in.

In time, having learned some of the language, he decided that his fate
was calling.  He approached the guildmaster of the warriors guild, bartering
service for training, and was accepted as both an student and a servant
for a time.  It was there that he began on his course as an adventurer,
there that he learned the use of the blade and mace and knife.

After that apprenticeship, he set about improving himself.  His interactions
with other adventurers has since proved his paranoia and suspicions
correct.  Three times he has been slain so far by those whose names he
never knew.

Alyx is a bit of a loner, and arrogant.  He has a rather fatalistic
view, perhaps from having been abandoned as a child, left as a slave
to the illithid.  The circumstances of his abandonment are chaotic in
his memory, but some things remain clear.  His parents abandoned him
to save their own lives.  The illithid were cruel masters, infiltrating
his mind and utilizing foulness to break his spirit.  And he would 
still be there if it were not for adventurers from the world above.

Alyx has a rather caustic and narrow view of the world, expecting 
the worst from everyone he meets.  As such, he is distrustful, even
striking first in anticipation.  He is arrogant and cruel, proud
and disdainful of the lesser beings who walk the world above.
Despite this, he is still curious, it was those same pathetic beings
who found a way to the illithid and combated them, allowing him
a moment of distraction to escape.

He is a perfectionist, working towards honing himself to be the 
perfect being he sees himself as.  He knows that there is work involved,
and knows that there will be setbacks, but he has a strong vision
of his fate.

Alyx will be seeking a hut in the village.

Life

I have fought, I have bled, I have killed, I have never backed down.  I glory in the fray,
the feel of it, the vigor that the struggle infuses in me.  I have been in the village long, and 
have slain many, I have died much as well, but that is to be my fate.

My battles have even pleased those above or below, though the one I name patron
has not whispered to me.  Patience, Alyx, if it is your fate it will be.
