Amatrysti Y'llianathys the Priest of Baerinika, Cardinal of the Golden Sun

Role

He trained long hours each day with his comrades, other
young elves of Darsylon. He trained in mace and spear,
throwing daggers and throwing punches. The thrill of the
fight filled his spirit. His fellows had a similar zeal in their
eyes. With each swing of the sword, they got better, the
skill they sought increased so that they could achieve the
one goal they all shared: To join the war against evil, to
bring the fight to the dark hearted and cleanse Thera.

The fact that war waged without them caused his brothers
to be anxious and at times, grief-stricken. After each daily
session, Amatrysti would gather them together. He then
looked each in the eye and with a fierce nod, began his
prayer. The purity of their conviction drove the prayer and
together, they called on the Lady Jaguar.

He reminded them that they must keep their focus on the
reasons they fought. To maintain their courage, they must
maintain their faith in the Light. To lose sight, even for a
brief moment, could cause their righteous zeal to turn
into directionless anger.

He then would dress the wounds of the day, his natural
affinity for the healing arts no secret. He knew he would be
a paladin one day, a holy warrior striking deep into the 
heart of darkness. His companions and his love for them
drove him ever onward towards this goal.

His father having long ago passed away from a wasting
disease, he lived with his mother, with whom he was close.
While their tranquil spot near a stream in the Vale was by
no means untouched at times by darkness, it was still a
shock when a dark man with dark intent came to their door
one autumn evening. Amatrysti had just returned from his
training when he seen the man force his way into their
dwelling, shoving his mother to the floor as she defiantly
tried to block his access.

Blood pumping and battle rage rising, Amatrysti charged.
The man turned with the speed and grace of a wild cat
and bludgeoned the young elf, the head wound dropping
him quickly to the ground. In the groggy darkness, the
image of the man's face came to him. A human. From his
weapon, the souls of the slain howled, begging to be freed.

The sounds of his mother's wrenching cries brought him to.
The dark knight apparently thought him dead for he had his
mother on the floor, straddling her. He tore at her gown, his
hands and teeth ripping flesh and cloth. He paid no heed to
Amatrysti lying upon the ground. The young elf tried to rise.

The man turned to regard him at the sound. He stood and
began to saunter over to Amatrysti. From outside came the
sound of footfalls. The door burst open and in came one of
his brothers, longsword flashing. The man caught the blade
with his mace, blackened and giving off a faint wailing sound,
and brought it back around in a dazzling, concussive blow to
the warrior's head. The skull shattered and blood sprayed.

Returning his attention to Amatrysti, he spoke, "So, lass. Ye
interested in seein' yer son fly? I bet'd be grand!" He then
punched Amatrysti in the face, causing him go black once more.

He felt the sensation of falling. As a brief wind whistled past his
ears, Amatrysti opened his eyes just in time to see the ground
coming to meet him. Arms out to brace, he hit the ravine floor
with the snapping of branches and of bones. A wild pain shot
through his arms and then he went numb. He did not pass out,
though, and gradually pain erupted all over his body.

From above, the renewed screams of his mother. Panic set in.
He could not move. Calming his mind, he called upon his Lady
and the spirits of the Light to guide his own spirit to the top of the
cliff. 

In his mind's eye, he could see his friend lying in a pool of blood
He reached out with his spirit, channeling all of his energy into one
last, desperate attempt. He imagined the wound, that vicious wound.
With the hands of his faith, he mended that wound. Not fully, just 
enough to stymie the bleeding in the brain.

With a flicker in his soul, he felt his brother awaken. The scrape of
a sword blade filled his senses. The surprised yell of a human
voice. "Drive it home, brother. Slay the vile wretch!" he coughed
from the ravine floor below his cottage. An ear-shattering scream.
Darkness.

Amatrysti lived. His other comrades had spotted him below.
The priest came and worked his prayers until the young elf could
rise. He was assured that his mother was safe and his friend 
would be a long time in recovery, but would survive. He then
looked down upon his hands to find his fingers bent at awkward
angles, two of which were black on his right hand. He felt a dull,
incessant ache in his right leg.

Years passed and he could never get full use out of his hands.
Gripping a weapon was torture, though it could be done with great
effort. His right leg kept him from pivoting well in sparring matches
and he often tumbled to the ground in shame.

One day, the friend that had come to his aid that fateful night came
to visit. He also could not pick up the fight, for his night's were filled
with headaches and nightmares, his waking hours were dizzy and
fraught with confusion. His friend spoke of regret and not being able
to do more that night. More to change the events that led to both of
them losing a bit of themselves.

Amatrysti stopped him with a fiery glance, his eyes burning into
the eyes of his friend. "Though I cannot strike at my enemies with
a sword, I must keep in mind that I still have the greatest weapon
of all. That is my faith. The Light will guide me and I will guide
others in this war and outside of it. I will not let these hands 
cause me to forget the purity of our cause. I will not let these
hands keep me from joining in that fight. 

I will be there, side by side, with my brothers and sisters as they 
walk into battle. I will be there to guide them through when the
darkness strikes in other ways. I will be there to keep their focus
as I have kept mine even through these trials. As long as I can
call upon my faith, I can see to it that my enemies fall and my 
comrades stand strong and blessed in the Light."

His brother in the Light, crying, smiled at him. Hope shone in
that smile. "Blessed are you, my kin. Indeed, blessed are we
to have you on our side!" 


They laughed together and embraced, brothers in faith as 
they had been brothers in arms. The next day, Amatrysti left
to join the fight, the Jaguar's regard must be won.

This character is driven to prove his worth in battle since that was always
his perceived role on Thera. In his early years, he trained in hopes of one
day becoming a paladin but the shattering of his body caused him to
rethink how he might still follow the ways of Baerinika without the ability
to actually fight one on one.

Since he also had a touch for healing, he decided to join the healer's
guild as opposed to the shaman's. He felt that by being a driving force
behind his fellow lightwalkers and keeping them fit in battle, he would
fulfill his desire to be in combat on the front lines.

Using the wily tricks of the healer, he could sustain his allies to fight harder
and longer while his enemies would fall quickly and more often. He would
also maintain the courage in their spirit by being an obvious manifestation
of Baerinika's will and guidance.

He would be at one time a spiritual leader, keeping the focus on the goal
without sacrificing the purity found within our souls. At the same time, he
would be as a martial leader, stirring up his allies to action against the
shadow.

The studious hours of prayer and reflection came and went.
Adventures at the sides of new comrades thrilled his years
as he progressed within his guild. He felt content that the wretched
fell before them and knew his Lady smiled upon their works.


Within the misty ruins, he found his Lady Jaguar, to stand before
her holiness directly for the first time. There, they spoke of causes
and reflected on purity and redemption, each step of the way, his
Lady challenged him, opening up pathways in his own spirit that
even he did not know existed so that words from his heart could
tumble out.

A long sought blessing was received. Many had warned Amatrysti
that a healer seeking the Jaguar's blessing would have a steep path
but no one doubted him and he never doubted himself. Their words
of surprise and sometimes amazement at his path only emboldened
him as he prepared to meet his Lady.

As his friend, his brother of the Light, Ardorn looked on, Amatrysti
was granted the Jaguar's trust in the years to come. He was granted
that her will empower his prayers so that he may further the purity
within himself and manifest that purity in the world without.

A priest must have guidelines and structure to his faith. Then, so
defined and broken down, could he see ever more clear that path 
of purity. Three personal and encompassing rules must be set forth
to define his place on that path. And so, Amatrysti did just that:

Firstly, I shall know no anger save for righteous anger. The need
for retribution for sins committed is born from duty and with the
goal of a world free of those sins. Directionless anger and vengeful
thoughts can erode the armor that is Purity, potentially displacing
one from that path of the just.

Secondly, I shall know no fear in any situation. For, no matter the
direct outcome of a battle, the Light shall always prevail in the end.
So, I will enter battle without fear of defeat, shining as an example to all.
The path of Purity grants those who walk it immunity to fear for we
grow stronger with both victory and defeat, while our foes shall only
know temporary strength, never growing together as a true and whole
community in times of trial. Fear leads to doubt and doubt can infect
the spirit, diminishing the purity within.

Being fearless shall not lead me into decisions that could undermine
that very purity of spirit, for a hunter must always know when to strike
and when to hold back.

And third, I shall know no hatred, for hatred is born from evil and
anger. It births vengeful spirits and impure thoughts, actions. Not
allowing such a base emotion to blossom only allows my love to grow
ever stronger. The love for my brothers and sisters will shine pure
and fierce. The purity found within the Light outshines hatred and
replaces it only with the need to eradicate what is impure.

That duties of a Scribe taken on by a devout of the Lady Jaguar
to many seemed odd. Though, during his journey along the path
of Purity, he could see only how it made perfect sense.

As years passed, battle came and went. Blood was spilled,
wounds were healed. Death bespoke doom yet none could
listen through the clarion call of the Light. The vagaries of despair
were like destructive waves upon a shore of cold iron, strong
in their ferocity yet not diminishing that strength of soul and purpose.

The Jaguar fights for the path Amatrysti is now on, and with her
inspiring spirit filling him, he would fight. He would fight  to
ensure that the only redemption the dark hearts had a chance of
knowing would be redemption through death and purification.

For his brethren in the Light however, he knew a priest of such a
Lady could bring about that same inspiration to his Maran brothers.
He would bring about that inspiration to those of a more genteel
spirit, for while the Jaguar's bite is fierce, it is delivered for the same
reasons we all fight for. The end of darkness. Light and love abound.

As this beacon, this teacher, he would seek to continue the
growth of focus upon the Light. For with every thrust of the sword
there must always be a nod to the just cause. In the din of battle
or in the quiet of the aftermath, the will of an Acolyte must be
at the forefront alongside the will of the Maran.

That will solidifies focus upon the Light, for war is the ultimate
force to swallow one up and spit one out. In what state one comes
out is determined by the Purity of spirit.

Amatrysti lived and fought the war he had sought to join since a young
squire hopeful peeked from his spirit, so long ago. His three personal
laws were tested, measured and withstood the onslaught of despair
that so many atrocities can bring to a soul.

On these front lines, with his eyes firmly upon the Light and his focus
of purity gleaming from them, he saw that his comrades were indeed
uplifted. They fought hard and well. At times, the battles turned against
them. More often than not, they stood victorious in the Light.

The people of Thera regarded these holy figures with a look that he
longed to see more of: hope. He saw it in faces that were sometimes
dubious as to why strangers would want to lay down their lives for 
them. Not only to ensure they lived their lives in the Light, but to also
ensure that their spirits grew as strong as their own.

His deeds let all before him know that he stood beyond reproach. Doubt
only made him stronger and when friends and foes alike seen that
strength, they rejoiced or cursed respectively. Amatrysti embraced his
foe's frustration, for it had already begun to weaken them and he knew
that the spirit of the Jaguar was there, ready to pounce.

With his faith rewarded with faith in turn from his Lady, Amatrysti
continued to press against his foes. He pressed harshly against
doubt and fear. No matter the obstacle, he would overcome.

His kin in the Light would overcome. His devout faith began to
move past such into a zealous adherence. For he knew
his ideals, a reflection of Baerinika, must ravage all that was
thrown against it.

As her Priest , he had ensured and aided in the death of many a foe. 
However, he would also strike at the taint wherever it hid. In words, 
in deeds, in auras. In perception and intent.

His soul was branded and bound with the Lady Jaguar. Now, he
would seek her holy mark, a symbol of their bond in this war together.

The duties of the Cardinal had been entrusted to him at the very time
the darkness grew to a force he had not seen in his lifetime. This was
well, he thought, for he knew it was within him to bring the Light upon
the world, turning that tide once more.

To come from the darkest depths, to withstand all that might be thrown
against a body and spirit, made one stronger in the end.

He had spoken with the Elder Prophet for the first time, at length, now.
And his concern was that the Light could not fully expunge taint if taint was
allowed to remain in one's own spirit and mind. He stood opposed to her
on many things. Yet, he held hope for they shared many more.

Not only did his truest foes multiply but the need for his harsh stance
against indulging the darkness in anyway grew as well. He battled on 
many fronts, in many ways and relished each day alive for it was a day
that confirmed his dedication to his holy cause.

A cause that he now must strike up others to. To bring new blood and
hope from obscurity to the front lines.

The whirlwind of holy wrath that surrounded Amatrysti and Avalusci
had finally blown itself calm. The deeds of his dearest Maran brother
would echo in his spirit for centuries to come, he knew. The death
of Avalusci did not cause sadness. No, perhaps a a delicate touch
of the bittersweet, but not despair.

The fiery elven warrior died as he had lived, filled with Light and
offering himself as a true symbol of the Light for the world to see.
He had reminded Amatrysti of his friend and comrade who had
come to his mother's aid, so long ago. The one, who to this day,
lived a life of blistering headaches, memory loss and crazed
melancholy created by the blow of a dark knight's weapon.

While the Light did indeed swell from the sustained efforts of the
two kindred, Amatrysti realized that the war touched many folk
in ways he would rather not see. Those he cared about, even
some whom he had never met, did not see things, perhaps, the
way he did. A soul touched by the Light was not always a crusader.
He must bring himself to respect that, to mind stray words and actions.

A trail of blood, however well spilled, followed Amatrysti. He would
trudge forward without rest, no matter. Though his martial prowess
was at its highest, he knew he must continue to temper his approach
in combating the foes that could not be slain with a blade.

With each encounter, his distrust for those not of the Light continued to
grow. As he saw it, the taint whispered in the ears of many, red aura or
no. He realized that he must take measured steps when dealing with
each situation but should harm be intended to the Light, in any way,
that threat must be destroyed or cast aside utterly. His place was to
strengthen the Light and the most effective way to do that was to put
full focus on those already found within it.

To continually grasp at straws, he thought, was a way to forever keep
their pure cause on the defense. To make headway, constant forward
motion was required.

Amatrysti has gained unassailable patience for his allies while his
stance against his foes has caused him to take on more of a taciturn,
steely demeanor. His zealous thoughts drive every decision.

He sees that the Fortress not only needs to be a well oiled machine
of war but a place that those who are not familiar with Thera or
combat or even their role in the Light can come and train, learn 
and grow. This strengthens the Light more than a great number of
well trained soldiers do alone. The are building a future.

His burning to desire to see the Empire topple has grown greatly. In
particular, he has true disgust for Destuvius and his followers.
Thus, he has taken a more active role in foiling the Empire when and
how he can including defending the Tree to ensure the Codex is
at the Palace as little as possible. He has taken a certain liking to
some of the Outlanders, those who have shown a glimmer of effort
to build bridges with him instead of shunning his efforts that in the end
benefit both ideals.

Even those foes who he had open discourse with before were almost
intolerable for him to speak to, especially Destuvians. He has started
to embrace a more militant mentality when leading the Fortress knowing
that the tenets with which he had led his life up to this point were so
firmly a part of him that he could shoulder more in the war without
sacrificing anything.

Thus, he revels in tactics and leading, continuing to blur the lines between
a traditional, simple Cardinal/Acolyte and the Maran. The two paths are
needed and blessed but the Fortress must be tightly knit and there must
be at least a bit of one in the other.
