Description
A pale creature with a somewhat interesting countenance meets your eyes. She
has the slender build of the drow, yet her face seems to have retained
elements of her human mix-breeding. Her eyes glitter, gold flecks set within
a sea of violet, surrounded by the lines of age and the focused gaze of a
scholar who long pours over their tomes. Her once raven-black hair is shot
with silver strands and is long and straight, although somewhat thin and
flighty as it seems to catch every errant breeze and dance in front of her
face. Her nose seems almost out of place against the high drowish cheekbones,
almost too broad, tipping the balance of her face. Her lips are still full
and stained a blood-red, which stands out vibrantly against her pale face.
Though her mouth is arced into a somewhat coy smile, there seems to be
no real warmth to it.
Her accouterments and clothing are mostly dark and many embroidered with
necromantic runes, some you see are clearly bone. There are several pouches
around a belt at her waist, oiled and treated to retain fluids. You glance
closer and see what seems to be the fingers of a pale hand poking out of one
of them and wonder what other grizzly things they contain. A few wands appear
to be in easy reach of her wrinkled hands, and you take of notice a rather
strange scent around her, a cloying mixture of cloves, perfume and embalming
fluid.
Role
The Demise of Corlx
Added Wed Jun 4 01:27:34 2014 at level 35:
It was a simple plan, the giant Eralsodiz was easily ensnared, a coy smile a
gentle touch on the arm and a mirthful laugh. For Corlx to become embroiled
was, as the chef might term it, gravy. I had simply planned to use them both
to gain a ring of certain renown, but when things began to unravel the
opportunity presented itself to deal a blow to the miserable Heralds,
hoarders of knowledge.
Corlx had already proved reticent in sharing knowledge of the Shadow Plane,
though it was obvious he knew more than he was revealing. So it was to be an
object lesson. The battle with the magma para-elemental went badly and
Eralsodiz quickly fled, I took my chance and slipped out, accidentally
pulling the door behind me. It was all I could do to refrain from smiling
when I heard Corlx's dying scream from behind the closed door, and oh, the
joy that flooded into me when I discovered his aging body had failed to
survive. Yes perhaps some flicker of annoyance in knowing that what was
locked in his ghostly brain was forever beyond my reach, but he suspected
already my allegiance to the Scion of the Eternal Night. I know full well
that the rumors of the secret library of knowledge guarded by the Heralds is
no myth, and I know full well he would never share what he knew of the Shadow
Plane. It was poetic in its justice that I should be the instrument of his
demise, with that I shall take solace.
A Strange Encounter
Added Wed Jun 4 09:29:59 2014 at level 35:
He was a strange individual, Ortus the Ater Magus. He claimed to represent an
interested party, though his words wove a web of intrigue never truly
defining the what, why or whom. Notwithstanding several things became clear:
1. Eudessa clings to her position of advisor by a thread, perhaps appointed
simply because no better candidate presented themselves.
2. Forces beyond these planes gather to push their agenda, the Ater Magus
indicated that although a certain degree of inevitability surrounded the
future, interested parties were keen to have those events unfold sooner
rather than later.
3. Someone, some force, had developed an interest in my 'work' and saw within
me the potential to advance their agenda.
Oh he spoke of the risk, but there is risk in all things. Risk is challenge
and the rewards are knowledge and power. These things I embrace, covet and
will wield as I bring forth the Eternal Night.
I had thought Eudessa would be a valuable resource in my research, but now I
see she merely stands in my way. Too scared to plunge into the veil of the
unknown and tear it back to reveal the knowledge it hides. It becomes clear
to me why she is not Chancellor, I will bide my time and continue my work.
Lord Daevryn has been given several exquisite last breaths, drawn from those
who have felt the touch of my lips at the moment of their death. With hope he
may yet stir in his mansion, for it may well be to achieve my goals his
patronage will be useful, but, with or without it, 'the wheel of progress
will roll forward.'
I will watch for signs and pulses in the dark energies, which I become more
attuned to each day through my work with the Cc'rulga, and try to sense this
Ortus. I believe he is connected to the Shadow Plane for the magic I
witnessed him use was like no other I have seen and left an echo I have not
felt since my flight through the dark portal.
An Interesting Find

Dvranan N'Adenath was a surly old man, his life-long studies had taken him
far and wide throughout the Theran lands. He knew every little nook and
cranny, twist and turn, and when it came to finding the remnants of the dead,
he was an expert. He was nearing the end of his mortal life and had
extensively researched all possible paths of extending his existence beyond
death. Even now his discussions with the High Priest in Eil Shaeria had
yielded several unique insights into brewing the elixir he needed. His mind
wandered in somewhat of a daydream as he searched through one of the more
choice locations of the underdark, a place where the drow dumped the unwanted
carcasses of slaves who had reached the end of their use, or political
opponents who had suddenly 'gone traveling'. He envisioned his emaciated
hands in skeletal form, surging with the dark energies of his new lich
existence. His thin lips drawing back in a toothless grin of ecstasy. Just as
he pulls a fresh corpse from a pile something falls just behind him, tossed
from above, down the shaft lost in darkness. The object lands with a splatter
on the pile of corpses, and then, to his surprise, begins to wail. Spinning
around, he peers up into the darkness, drawing back to remain unseen. His
eyes already enhanced with the spell of infravision, he focuses on the
wriggling and wailing bundle. Covered in blood, with cord and placenta still
attached, he sees a new born infant. Clasping his aged hands in delight he
sweeps up the child in his cloak and shuffles into the darkness.
Life After Death

Back in his laboratory Dvranan ties off the umbilical cord with a silk
strand. With a flick of his silver scalpel he neatly cuts the cord and
quickly proceeds to drain the precious contents of the afterbirth into a
conical flask, which he seals with a wax plug. Such vibrant life! He peers at
the mass of blood and nutrient rich matter, 'oh yes this will be most useful'
he mutters. Turning his attention back to the newborn, he ponders its form.
The crying has ceased for now, satiated for the time being by a pouch of yak
milk he had hanging in the larder. The child's eyes are open, such
interesting eyes, gold specks in a sea of violet. Certainly drowish, yet the
child seems overly large about the hands and feet. 'Mixed race' he muses,
clearly the reason the child was discarded, since no female child of Teth
Azeleth would be treated so, unless it could be seen as a potential usurper
to someone's seat of power. He chuckles, drows and their matriarchal
politics, but what to do now? Several scenario's play in his mind, some of
them rather gruesome in their outcomes for the newborn babe, but as he gazes
into the child's eyes a strange thought comes to him: to make his transition
requires strength and lifeforce. Perhaps the child could be used for such a
thing to augment and lesson the strain on his own, aging, physical body. To
that end he resolves to keep the child alive until such time that the High
Priest brews his elixir and the becoming is at hand. He will bargain with the
Priest to either use the child, or trade it to ensure the brew is true. 'Oh
yes, a perfect plan!' he cackles.
Time Passes

It is hard to say why so much time passed from the day Dvranan brought the
foundling back to his laboratory and this, where they battled their way
through the bleak vale fighting wights and ghasts. Anilsanatne, as he had
named her, was now in her early teens. He had schooled the child in the
basics of necromancy and she had been an apt and willing pupil. Beyond that
she saw to the old man's needs as his age advanced to the point where she
could not ever guess at the years that hung on him. Finally he claimed he was
ready to shed his failing flesh and, with the ingredients needed in his
possession, they approached the High Priest of Eil Shaeria. Little did she
know, that her fate also hung in the balance.
During his hushed conversation with the High Priest, she noticed more than
one furtive glance at her, before an agreeing nod. Dvranan's glances
contained some strange look, she could not quite place, but would later
recognize as regret. The High Priest's glances had something quite different,
and one she would later in her life recognize as carnal desire. Finally
though there seemed to be a bargain struck and an exchange of handshakes and
ingredients, before the High Priest led Dvranan off towards an alcove.
For many days after the old man had imbibed the brew given to him by the
Priest, Anilsanatne remained in the church. There was really nowhere to go as
she was not strong enough to face the undead of the vale without him. She fed
on what little sustenance she could find, several rats cooked over a small
fire and water which dripped in through the roof when it rained. Sometimes
the Priest would amble around mumbling to himself hardly noticing her, other
times his gaze would linger on her, his tongue flicking over his lips, that
strange look returning in to his eyes. Eventually the night arrived and the
Priest beckoned her to the alcove where the old man's body lay, his essence
held in a strange device. The High Priest begins his chanting and dark
energies begin to coalesce above the body, as his chants reach a fevered
pitch Dvranan's essence begins to leech back into the shell on the altar.
Suddenly it lurches and the air is shattered by a bloodcurdling scream of
agony and despair. Before her the wrappings split apart and the dessicated
husk beneath crumbles into dust, leaving nothing but the tendrils of
Dvranan's essence which dissipate in the air. The High Priest cackles, 'silly
old fool! All that and he brings me the wrong periapt!' His gaze turns on
Anilsanatne and for the first time in her young life she feels true fear.
Flight into Darkness

How she managed to escape is beyond her, the cold claws of the ghasts rent
her skin, and the chilling ghostly touches of the wraiths numbing her limbs.
Maybe she was lucky? Lucky that after dodging a few of them she found the
gate. Lucky that the old man had given her the key to carry. She stumbled and
crawled through an elven market place and eventually finds a dark portal.
Throwing all caution to the wind she plunges headlong into it and in plunged
into darkness, a strange darkness of shadow and dark power where she felt
time end. It may have been she was within it only moments before stumbling
into the strange void on the other side, but it felt like days, her moments
barely a crawl. Not knowing whether the mad Priest was in pursuit she pushed
herself to move until she finds herself in a dark temple and then bursts in
the the sunlight and into a unfamiliar City. There she hide for some time,
stealing food and avoiding the slavers, before striking out to try to find
her way to the only home she knew. Eventually she found another void, this
one leading to an ancient grove, from there finally somewhere she recognized,
the Eastern Road. Following it, she at last finds herself in Galadon, a town
she had known from the few trips she had taken to gather magical supplies.
Slipping into the darkest alley eventually she takes refuge in the
Necromancer's guild, the guardian giving her the merest of glances as she
slipped inside.
The Next Steps

The Mansion has been silent for many years, I have seen only the imprints of
my own feet and the shuffling tracks of my undead in the dust. As I sit here
quietly in front of the fire which seems never to wane, I pen these words:
To : The Lord Daevryn
Subject: My Path
It lead me to the door of your mansion early in life, and long have I sought
audience. I pledged the last breath of 5 in my youth to you and have sent and
exceeded that goal. Next I set myself the task of gaining entry into the
Chasm of Eternal Night to pursue my dark studies. This very eve I have gained
that position by proving my worth to the Advisor to the Chancellor, Eudessa.
I will continue in absence of guidance, but will come at your behest whenever
you deem my worthy of your words.
Anilsanatne N'Adenath
----------------------------------
We shall see if it will be found here where I leave it in this plush sitting
room. Until I hear word I will continue my studies, my next goal is to master
the manipulation of dead flesh in all its guises. Cantydine La Sinc, an
conjurer of some renown has asked for some assistance with a party of
troublesome explorers in the mountains. I expect to be well rewarded for my
efforts as they still put up quite a challenge for now.
As an aside I have discovered yet another of the massive Khar-Zhur trees. I
feel that they are somehow connected, although this one did not contain any
artifacts such as the one in the mountains. I will continue to search for
more.
Summary
Added Fri Jun 6 10:24:46 2014 at level 36:
Anilsanatne has witnessed failure and will never submit to it. As she has
grown she has realized that men and others desire her physically and she will
use this to her greatest advantage when she can. She has heard of Daevryn a
Lord who also appreciates those who lust for dominance as she does, both
physically and in the pursuit of her goals. So she will seek him out and will
prove herself worthy through excellence.

The Shadow Plane
Added Fri Jun 6 10:44:14 2014 at level 36:
Subject The Shadow Plane
_____________________________________________________________________________
I touched it only briefly, or did it touch me, it is had to tell whether I
passed through, or vice versa. My flight was frenetic as death was on my
heels, perhaps something worse than death considering the bargain that had
been struck. What I do remember though is the surge of dark energies, sound
became hollow, only ephemeral whispers and shapes could I behold. Though it
seemed time stretched out to eternity I may have only been within the merest
moment before emerging on the other side of the dark portal into a strange
veil. Since that time though I have searched for lore on this place, for it
is there I felt true power.
There is little within the journals and tomes in any library, even the lyceum
has few texts, but rumors persist that some have found a way to fully enter
the plane and that here in the material plane there are artifacts of such
great dark energies that they can be used to open a portal to the Plane of
Shadow. Under duress, quite pleasurable and exquisite, duress, I have told by
a member of the Eternal Star that the ex-Chancellor Zhenyen sought such
artifacts before his demise, but failed. Perhaps, if his final resting place
can be found, and if my powers grow powerful enough, his spirit can be called
upon to reveal what he knew.
'Davarrah the Ravenous' a name whispered in fear. Somehow this dark scholar
is connected to the Plane of Shadows. It walked abroad in the lands at one
point, though little has been heard of it since. Here lies another path of
investigation. Xaelobran, another undead mage was also seen for sometime in
the city of Hamsah, so the reports from the renown literary pundit Skeeta
Twitterlark. Those who have braved the some of the portals created by the
mage Khardrath may have come upon a library of sorts, build on the funding of
Tavlin the Mummy Lord. What their ultimate goals were none can say, but it is
clear their mastery of the dark energies certainly point to the possibility
that they know secrets through which one which might gain access to the
Shadow Plane. What that might be done to open a permanent link remains
unknown, but should it be achieved then the dark energies could flow freely
into this plan, feeding all that the Ccul'gra desire. Surely this would be
the beginning of the last sunset, before the world is cast into eternal
night.
The Eternal Night
Added Sat Jun 14 18:31:49 2014 at level 38:
The voice rang clear and strong in her mind. Her prayers had been heard and
she was invited to the mansion of the Lord Daevryn. Setting aside her studies
she moved to his audience. A strong and powerful presence, he listened to her
words, her view of her ultimate goals, to
succeed where her 'father' had failed and turn his bargain with the High
Priest of Eil Shaeria to her advantage. This though was only a step towards
what has lured her dark soul for so many years, to once again touch the
Shadow Plane, to find a portal through which she could pass at will, and
through which the dark forces could pour forth and bring the lands of Thera
into the Eternal Night. She spoke to the Lord of her meeting with the Ater
Magus, of her manipulation of The Eye of the Scarab temple. She knew well the
Eye thought to play her for his own ends, but in knowing, she was the one in
power. The Lord's keen observation was that the Ater Magus may also be
attempting to move her like a pawn in a larger game. It was insightful
advice, some that she took in great consideration and would keep it at the
forefront of her mind should the Ater Magus come before her again.
The Lord of the Earth asked for some proof of her worth, some short term
goals by way of which he may judge her fortitude. Already she had lived her
life in this manner, deliver 10 last breaths to the Lord in his name, gaining
entry into the Chasm, supplanting Eudessa from her position of power. All
these she had already achieved, her next step then was to take leadership of
the Chasm in a position of leadership. From there she would rebuild the power
of the Scion and bring its enemies to heel, let them once again tremble
before the power of the Eternal Night. Then and only then she could pursue
her ultimate goals, and then the world would fall into shadow and remain
there.
Darkness Flickers
Added Thu Jun 19 19:25:28 2014 at level 39:
It was a strange dichotomy, the sense of power and the feeling of loss. I
could sense that in the lands the Shadows had grown deeper, that the dark
energies thrummed more keenly, but the focus of the Ebony Scepter was silent.
The energy I had grown accustom to feeling in a distant call when I awoke,
due to the petty pilfering of the fools of the village and fortress, this
time was completely silent. Not a whisper, or inkling could I sense, yet, the
Archmage reported he guarded it still. Something had profoundly changed, and
it did not take long to begin to discover what.
The Archmage called me to his side, and related that the Eye of the Scarab
had taken the Scepter, when it was returned its dark energies had been
plundered. His task for me was to discover what had transpired, through in
the back of my mind I already knew. Kwoalewei sought the artifacts of power
that Zhenyen had failed to obtain. His overtures to me began to become
transparently clear in their desires, and his comments previously came into
focus. He had mentioned that the Ccrul'gra were dispensable, and I, in all
honesty agreed, they were a small price to pay to open the Shadow Plane, but
it seems he desired more of a sacrifice. Ortus' name the Archmage knew, as
did I. I related my conversation with the Ater Magus, though not all the
details. Lord Daevryn had been right in his assessment that the emissary of
the coven's proposed bargain was a lopsided one. Now there must be a search
for the details of what ever dark ritual had drained the scepter.
To that end the Archmage anointed me as Chancellor, a bitter sweet victory.
For, as I had aspired and promised Lord Daevryn, I had gained my position of
leadership. Leadership over a bereft fold. Bereft of powers, bereft of
members of worth. Lordimar? An elemental mage who barely woke and contributed
less than nothing when he did. He would be the first to go. Yet there were
others who sought to take his place. Beulobub, a fickle shapechanger who's
studies focused on what sounded like delusional fantasy, concocted in his
bloodthirsty mind. Still, if his focus could be channeled to my goals, then
he would be a useful tool, until he wasn't he could have access to the
libraries of the fold, but I will watch him carefully. If sating his
bloodlust is his only goal then to the nine hells with him, let him sit on
the ocean floor and seek his 5th enliven till the barnacles take him. Kerbyn,
does not appear agile of mind, yet his slothful, monosyllabic speak may well
obscure what can be another useful tool. If nothing else he will be shield
and blade till I achieve what I seek. The rest are either too young and
unproven to be of use, or have not yet proven worth. We shall see.
The Well of Dark Shadows
Added Fri Jun 20 08:41:14 2014 at level 39:
Kwoalewei was forthcoming, as I thought he would be. He believes he toys with
me and is in complete control, and for now he may be a few pieces ahead, but
I have a few gambits of my own to play. He indeed delivered the to
Xaenopoblan, an enchanter of some significant skill. Within a church, which I
have discovered to have previously been the domain of the Shadow cabal, was a
well dark shadows, and it was into this the enchanter poured the power of the
scepter. It seems that the Eye had also secured a locking mechanism which
might well be the final piece of the puzzle in the opening of the Shadow
Plane. The Well is indeed the true portal. What I experienced in my youth was
a mere anomaly, perhaps I passed through during a surge in the dark energies.
The Well when fully open would be stable to pass through and return.
It is curious though, the choice of location for this well. Could it be that
the Shadows so long ago drew on similar dark energies that filled the Ebony
Scepter? The Torch of Shadows was extinguished, I have seen its dry husk in
the lyceum, but what if this well could be used to ignite it once more? An
interesting prospect, however fanciful.
Pillow Talk
Added Thu Jul 3 14:00:45 2014 at level 41:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kwoalewei, soft words have begun to wear down his defenses. He talks to me
now as a lover, wrapped in a post-coital haze, revealing to me secrets he has
told no other, and slowly I entangle myself within him. There are indeed two
keys which will unlock the well, the first and known to me was the Scepter,
now void of its dark energies. The second, not surprisingly, is the Torch of
Shadows. Something in the location of the Well and the unraveling of the
events which the Eye described told me the Torch would play a role in this, a
key role it seems. The question now is: are the rumors true? Is the artifact
which sits so boldly on desplay in the outer halls of the Lyceum truly the
Torch of Shadows, found near Nazmorghul's shrine? Or is it as I suspect a
mere counterfeit, with the actual relic secreted somewhere, hidden from the
eyes who would desire it the most. Dark whispers have stated there is a
secret sept of the Heralds, one with a far more nefarious agenda than their
outward frivolities. These 'Keepers' manipulate and hoard lore long forgotten
in the lands, and have more insight into the going on of the mortal realms
than any could imagine, influencing events to their own ends. Long they have
interfered with the work of the Scion's of Eternal Night, which explains
their reluctance to grant me passage into the Lyceum. It made the death of
Corlx so much sweeter at my hands knowing this. But, I digress. If they do
not hold the geniune artifact, then where could the Torch of Shadows lie
hidden, and is there the merest chance that the Well could be used to relight
it's darkness. Oh! What chaos would it bring to the realm for the powers of
Shadows to manifest themselves in me! The Plane finally opened and Darkness
streaming through. Truly a thought to bring a flicker of ecstasy into any
dark heart. We shall see.
The Archmage has bade me continue my work. Perhaps even he is blind to the
events that are in motion? I shall continue to court the favor of Kwoalewei,
and from him glean as much information as I can. This game is far from played
out, that much is clear.
Plots and Machinations

--------------------------------------------------------
I tire of the need for pacts, deals and accords, yet I feel the weight
of age upon me. My once raven hair is shot with gray, my alabaster skin now
speckled, like a thrush egg, with mottled spots of age.
Ortus has agreed to broker whatever aid the Mistress will deign to give,
but I know well the Mistress of the Coven will give only if there is
in the bargain which will benefit her. Just as I have stayed my hand
from many, many, sweet breaths I could have imbibed. Allowed their owners
to live and retain what should be mine, all for the leverage that soon
they might be of aid in my search. Yet the High Priest remains silent since our last
interaction. Ortus has not returned with word, and so I have refrained from visiting
the Church of Eil Shaeria once more. Trying with forbearance to wait, and wait, while
the last of my middle age slips away. I have vitality still, but it will not
last for ever. The Shadow Plane looms closer, I feel it. The Eye relates that
things move towards our goal, though like me he has his own agenda.
I have made attempts to entice the Chef of the Inn into gleaning information
from Lord Arvam the Eternal about the Torch of Shadows which sits in the Lyceum.
I am convinced it is counterfeit, firstly need confirmation and secondly
some indication where the genuine Torch lies, if I can but lay claim to it.
The Scepter remains inert, the Archmage has made no inroads into restoration
of its powers and the power of the Chasm remain silent and impotent.
I have done what I can to hide how truly bereft the Fold truly is and have
brought new members within, tasking them to gather information which may be of use.
But, our enemies clamor at the Chasm mouth, Fortress, Village, Outlander and Empire.
The Emperor has made it clear through action he wishes to crush my skull, but
as yet he has been denied. I mock him by slaying his servants under his nose, and behind
his back tempt the Dread Lady with the knowledge she seeks. Already she intimates
that success will lead her away from the palace to the Chasm itself.
Should Callidus show her the way across to undeath, then we will see if she
speaks the truth. If not I will tear the dark energies from her and reduce her to ash.
I must begin my work on the elixir soon! All else must be secondary, for only through
the becoming may I truly find the power I seek.....and then.....I shall breath in
the last breath of this Plane, and it will tremble and know fear.
