Description

It is his eyes that first take your attention, the colour of the brightest emeralds. They are captivating, but also terrifying, they are cold, empty, and calculating. His visage is one of stone resilience, an emotionless mask that even the most intense glares cannot penetrate. His complexion is pale at best, but it is then that you notice a blemish upon his porcelain skin, once gone unnoticed as his eyes took your attention. A jagged scar that runs from his mid-forehead through the eyebrow, and curves along the bridge of his nose to swirl downwards below his right eye and run down coming to end it's cruel path just before his jawline. His face has come to be framed by a border of silver, his hair, slicked back runs to his shoulders, leaving his face revealed. Two lobe-less ears penetrate through each rising forth to come to a point, a mark of his elven heritage. His frame is slender, though toned to muscle, his stride is one of a lithe confidence, though you notice he favors his right side, a slight limp barely discernable as he walks.

the tainted soul of the Vanquisher, cleansing the final breaths from its lungs.

With a final breath escaping from his lungs, the radiant orb revealed itself from
within his bag, levitating within the air, a bright blinding white light emitted
from within, and when the light cleared, the orb was gone.

Araevin looked around, the battle had been won, and the remaining Imperial blades
were in retreat, while a number of their bodies lay scattered before the Palace.
The handful of squires returned his gaze, some nodding approval, others a weak
smile, but all rejuvenated their victory, and accomplishment in retaining their
orb. Without a moment passing, he quickly attended to the wounds of the squires,
the blessing of his lady invigorating their body, mending their flesh.

Araevin closed your eyes and hum for an instant. A soft light enveloped the
as he pray for the purification of the souls of his companions, and invoking Hope
where it was lost, he brought his friends and himself to safety.

Added Tue May 5 19:21:48 2009 at level 35:
It is now that we shall make our strike, Let us fear no evil, no pain, and no
death. Let us stride forth with strength and courage, faith within the heavens,
hope within our hearts. With the blessings of the divine, let us go forth, our
blades anointed with retribution. Let it be they who scurry in fear, and tremble
before our wrath. With the faith of our lady, let our blade strike true. I wish
you all blessings my brothers and sisters.

Without another word, he descended silently upon the first gathering of centurions;
his brothers and sister close behind. Righteous wrath descended upon the
unsuspecting centurions, while his blade lashed out, cutting deep with every
strike. More of the squires joined the fray and quickly the centurions were
overwhelmed. The second group of centurions were dispatched in the same efficient
manner, but as the last blades struck out, the call to arms could be heard
ringing within the palace. They would no longer have the advantage of surprise.

With haste they made their way between the ominous buildings, and just as they
neared the vanquisher, he let out a bellowing roar, and as he did, a handful of
Imperial blades dashed from around him to engage.

All around him the sound of clanging steel rang out as the squires parried the
Imperial Blades; thunderous clangs were heard as blows were met equally with
shields. With a massive shout, the Vanquisher charged towards him and in the
last moment he dodged deftly out of the way, the Vanquisher crashing to the
ground as his momentum overwhelmed him. In a rage the Vanquisher released a flurry
of blows, but Araevins training took over, each blow was met with shield,
parried and with a swift strike a punishing blow was carved into the vanquishers
flesh.

Beads of sweat now ran down, his blade work was impeccable, with each blow taken
upon his shield, his own blade lashed out, and it was now that such routine had
left the Vanquisher covered with wounds, each gushing blood as Araevins blade
had cut deep within the flesh. The Vanquisher appeared weary, his moves sluggish,
his blows uncontrolled. It was now Araevin knew he must finish this battle, and
so he released a flurry of blows, and with lightning quickness each found
mark, tearing at vital points. It was then, releasing all of his strength into
this final blow, the Vanquishers came crashing down overhead of Araevin, but he
was quick to react, his shield came up to block, and with all his force returned
the blow with his shield, ranging across the Vanquishers body as he was thrown
back. Capitalizing on this opportunity, Araevins blade came from underneath his
shield, cutting deep into the Vanquishers chest, forcing him to come crashing
upon the ground. With opportunity at hand, he raised his arms to the heavens and
uttered a divine prayer, the unrelenting wrath of his lady came crashing down upon

The past years were not ones filled pleasure, and very limited joy. They were
tainted with the memory of battle, the memory of death, and unrelenting evil. Not
all of his crusades were marked with success; a handful of grievous scars would
prove that, but with each battle he felt more confident with his abilities, and
those skills he had learned while he studied with the Paladin Guild.

He always found himself troubled as he listened to bards and soldiers alike
glorify tales of battle, of death, and of great victories over their adversaries.
They sought riches, fame and glory that would attach itself to such tales, but
he had long ago learned that death and that battle was not glorious. Too many
people he had seen die before him, those he called friends, and even more of
those he called foes. No, such memories, not one of them could he recall being
glorious. Those memories were one of many things that served as a reminder for
why he had taken the oath of the Maran.

He has witnessed unconceivable horrors, terrible evil, unrelenting pain, and it
was such things that gave him strength to carry out his duty. Each day his faith
grew stronger, melding with his soul becoming one, even the creed as he first
heard it seemed to meld with him, each word embraced with willing arms. The
ultimate reinforcement however, was the knowledge of how many depended on the
success of his campaigns, and that at every moment he must be a beacon of hope
for all those who have been subjugated by the hands of darkness.

With a mere touch he was instantly awake, and with his eyes focusing, he saw the
outline of Ariel, a lady squire of the Fortress.

Dawn approaches. She quietly uttered, and then returned to her belongings to
prepare.

He rose slowly, his eyes however revealed nothing of pain, nothing but utter
dedication, faith, strength. They were alit with flames, burning with the most
righteous of fires. With a quick pause to give prayer to his Lady, he began to
prepare. First he prepared his blade, checking for any flaws that might hinder
its strike within battle, and then he refastened his armor, ensuring none would
fail at the least inopportune time.

With a stealth lithe he returned to the hill, perching himself at the top
surveying the land. The centurions had become lax, their lusting glances towards
the fire, hoping for warmth had abolished any night vision they may have had, and
this would be the perfect time to strike. Looking back towards the camp, he made a
gesture with his hand, and his brothers and sisters came to form around him.

The two scouts crouched upon the hill overlooking the imperial lands. All
around them columns of smoke rose from the burning fires, clouding their
vision and masking the details of their enemies. For days upon end the clash
of steel echoed throughout Thera, originating first within the Redhorn
Mountains, spanning across cities to finally come before the palace of the
Empress.

Before them a single road etched itself out of the village of Balator, carving
between two massive towers, only to nestle itself between buildings as it
curved along the land to come before the palace. Imperial centurions took
strategic positions all along the road, while before the palace gates a
behemoth stood watch. However, it was his bag which caught the scouts
attention, for the bag glimmered with a radiant white light, and it was left
without doubt this light originated from their orb they sought.

"What do you think?" the scout inquired.

Araevin remained silent, his eyes surveying the land before them all the while
his hand absentmindedly toyed with his chin which was covered with days old
growth.

He knew the Undead Empress and those who fashioned to call themselves Elites
would never bother themselves against his strike. No, they would send forth
their youth, those who called themselves Blades of the Empire would be the first
to answer the calls of the Centurions.

"We shall strike at dawn, when their centurions are most weary, and the Imperial
Blades unprepared for assault. Let fear of the unknown settle within their minds,
and anxiousness overwhelm them." Araevin finally replied.

He slowly rose, pain tormented at his body, but he would not allow such things to
have a place within his mind. All over blood-soaked bandages covered his body,
for even his blessings had limit to heal his wounds. He slowly made his way down
the hill, returning to his camp, and his squire companions. Coming to fall upon
a blanket in the dirt where he would call home that night, he slowly removed his
scabbard and placed it next to him. No fire would burn, simple rations of bread
and water would be passed out, they could not allow their position to be given
away.

Araevin looked to the heavens silently, it always amazed him with all chaos in
the world, and one could still look up into the stars and find a calming tranquil
peace. His eyes grew weary, and as he laid his head to rest, a rush of memories
overwhelmed him.

Chapter 3 - The Path of the Maran.

--- Writers Note ---

It was in the following years, rumours began to be uttered among the campfires
of a courageous warrior who beared the blessing of Lady Baerinika. His blade
annointed with retribution, his soul burning with the fires of light he strode
into the darkness to smite that which lay in waiting. Little documents exist
to the events that took place, but it was often spoke of a man with ears of
elven heritage, and of emerald eyes alit with fire as he fought through the
imperial lands alongside his companions of light, calling upon the wrath of
the heavens, assaulting the very palace in search of an orb of radiant crystal.

It was often spoken by witnesses, that this man of elven heritage be seen in
the company of the esteemed Captain, Lord Marshall, and Cardinal as fierce
battle waged against the undead legions, and hordes of the Imperials.
It was then perhaps, that his path had embraced to be one with that of the
Maran, for it was by eye-witness of an Acolyte, that our story begins once more.

It was that he spoke of one morning, where the air still crisp of morning
dew, that two men had arrived. At first, he was unaware of their significance,
but as they approached the summit of the mountain, where its peaks lay home
to the holiest of temples of light, that he recognized one, and was captivated
by the other. The first was none other then the Lord Marshall of the Fortress,
a man who walked with grace, and confidence, always aware, always ready.

He spoke that the other was one of elven heritage, he spoke of his eyes, the
brightest of emeralds which had captivated his attention. At first he mentioned
he noticed nothing else of this man, for their beauty, alluring, seemed to
briefly conceal his unrevealing, scarred face. He noted that while this man
walked with lithe, a barely discernable limp could be noticed.

He reported that it was before the very altar, inside of the temple where it
is often regarded that the gods of light come to gather, that the two men
spoke with one another. The very aura around them pulsating of light, of protection.

It was there, his journey among the Fortress began. For before the eyes of the
gods of light, he spoke the oath of the Squire, and came to embrace the creed as
one. As he arose from one knee, the very room shined of brightest radiance as holy
flames, and pure light came to surround his body.

It was there, he arose as a squire, and crusader of the Fortress.

Chapter 2 - Divinity

Added Mon Apr 27 18:55:37 2009 at level 14:
"Often, travellers of young and old alike come to visit the ruins of
the mist to pledge themselves to our beloved Baerinika. Many come to
to be rescued by our ladies embrace, to be freed of poverty or famine,
to find something within themselves. However, this elven child was
different. He did not plead for food, or wealth and riches, fame or
glory. He pledged his soul to be given the strength, his body the
endurance, his mind the cunning to rid the world of those who have
taken the mark of taint upon their souls. To call upon divine
retribution to those who were motivated only by the greed upon their
hearts, corruption that seeps through their mind and souls. To bring
his blade against those of the shadows.

What was remarkable was that often these travellers come to pray, and
though they leave feeling enlightened, they never find the true blessing
of our lady. This elven child was different, never have i felt such
blessing, for he bore the mark of the divine-blessed. It was when he
rose from prayer, gone was the child posture, the innocent eyes, and the
boyish grin. For what arose was a child no longer, for it is said that
when a mortal is truly touched and blessed by the heavens, a fragment
of the god is left inside the mortal, ever churning, but never
attempting to break free, for it is content within the soul, for it is
what influences the soul. What arose was a miraculous sight, even as
though it was blessed by my most gracious lady, never have i witnessed
what arose. For what arose from that Altar was a Holy knight, and as he
confidently walked past, i saw a fire alit in his eyes. It was the eyes
that i shall never forget, for those emerald eyes were alit with holy
fire..."

I remember the first time he was ordered in formation along the lines, for he
was charging at the fore, far ahead of the others. His moved as i have seen
no other, zeal had consumed within him, his eyes were alit with the fire of
retribution. With each slash of his blade, nearly inhuman with speed, sent
more and more souls towards the afterlife, to be judged before the heavenly
eyes for all their actions within life.

It boldness, his daring, his courage, it is amazing how long he battled before
succumbing to injury. All those he had arrived with, had come and gone, and far
more recruits had fallen as the years had past, but he had always remained,
unscathed, but forever walking with a burden far worse then death.

It was later that i would learn more of him, as he lay in his bed, bandages
covering his face, and all over his body. His leg, wrapped and raised, mending
from the terrible wound he sustained. As i tended over him, it was there he
first told me his name, Araevin Earynspieir. I asked him once, why he acted with
such daring, and showed such courage to stand at the fore at every battle,
that as he watched all around him fall, he had never shakened so. It was not
that he was so confident within his abilities, or thought himself so great, but
merely that he knew that fate, and destiny shall play a far larger role then
chance ever shall. It was that ones path must be carved, embraced, and that
while one shall never know where it shall lead, it is as the heavens see fit
how far that path shall continue. That while he shall forever control his life
he shall never control his death, but, he always assured himself it shall
never come before it's time.

His wounds had forced him to be bed-ridden for many weeks. It was in these
he sought confidence within me. We spoke of the heavens and of the gods, and
it was there i believe he came to know what dwelled within him. Within him,
he bore the mark of the divine-touched. Often such is seen within priests,
shamans, and Paladins. I think it was then, he first found himself, he first
found his Lady...."

It is very rarely that I pen personal missives to myself in my Chronicles,
but this story, while as concrete as it is in his later years, evidence of
his childhood is virtually non-existant. There are many reports that he was
born in Darsylon, however upon investigation I could find no living relatives
or any one else who came to know his name. There is almost no reports of his
existance until is near Hundredth birthday, and many of those who knew him
at this time often spoke that he always seemed to be carrying a burden, a
secret never uttered, but ever visible. So here I, Aljemis, assistant to
the Historian of Thera, Submit my story of the tale of one Crusader, and his
rise through the Guild of Paladins, and that of the Fortress, in the Age that
will come to be known as the Fourth Age.

- Writer's Note -

As i have claimed Earlier, Little is known about the life of Araevin prior
to his coming of Voralian, whispers float upon the wind that he was from
the Elven city of Darsylon, however never was this proven, and rescources
close to Araevin claim he never mentioned his Past. However, it was found
that fifty years before Araevins first appearance in Voralian, That a of a
priest of advancing years spoke memory of a young elf upon the battlefield,
his zeal courage, and resolve a beacon for all who fought alongside him. So
it is his testimony, and others i have come to find that remember this young
elf.

"It was upon the battlefield, i first laid eyes upon him, he had come along
with a batch of re-enforcements, both young and old, but all yet untested in
battle. I remember he stood out, for while they stood in formation waiting,
all appeared agitated, glancing about wary eyed, expecting assault at every
turn. He was different, where they were agitated, he was calm, quiet, his eyes
focused, examining the battlefield off in the distance. It was as if he did
not fear, even as the lifeless bodies of our dead pass their formation, his
resolve remained unshakened.
