Arkellin Kvin the Weaver of the Elements, Provost Magistrate

Role

When I was a child, my life was very strict.  I had a routine, and parents who
enforced that routine.  They said that it would help to make me a better person, 
help me achieve something in life.

They were right, in so far as they went.  how I could achieve more with some
discipline.

I am sure that my father's beatings and my mother's constant shouting
helped keep me focused, as well.  I still bear the marks from my childhood,
and I certainly see the value of their teachings.

Without structure and order, life is not possible.

This does not mean we cannot push the boundaries of what that order allows.
There can be great advantage gained by someone who knows the rules and plays within
them, who learns the tricks and such that allows him to prosper.

Perhaps not the lesson my father wanted to teach me, but it is the one
I learned.

Arkellin is a rather arrogant fellow, full of himself.  He has the 
confident air of one who does not believe he can be wrong.

This confidence in himself will often lead him to trouble,
It is not stupidity, for he does know many things, and will
learn more, but it is overjudging the measure of himself.

For Arkellin, order represents the structure of society, the rules which
bind us together, and which allow us to plan and learn.  These rules
are of course there to bind those who are foolish enough to think that
that is all there is, and who do not have the wit to make use
of them for their own gain.

My father was right.  The structure in my life has led me to great power so far, and if I 
continue along this path, I shall be renowned as one of the greatest archmages that
ever lived.  No, the greatest of this age.  Of all ages, there is no limit
to what power I might have.  The spire gives me shelter and lets me grow, and in
return I shall lend my might to it, that it shall grow and prosper and dominate.

I have been promoted to Voralian City, far better than that cesspool of Seantryn Modan.
Lamayinn seems competent, but I shall make a much better Provost once I have her
out of the way.  Not that I shall necessarily depose her, but there are ways and means of 
proving the value that I am rather than she.

Patience and planning, these are the necessary items for me now.

Four paths I have mastered, four paths I learned better than any other living mage.
As I continue down this path, despite any setbacks or issues, I further realize the
truth that my father beat into my young skull - that organization is the key to power,
and that an ordered mind and a structured life will lead to the supremacy I desire.

The Provost yet lives, I have seen her less and less though, the weight of her duties
must weigh strong.  Despite one minute error, I still hold hope for promotion within the 
Spire, and with it the respect I deserve.

Still, these ones are useful, and the alliance is of use.  I have found a single source
of barrier, the black rod that is tied to my spirit, and the difficulty of it renders it impossible
to find alone.  I must bide my time further, irritating patience that is necessary now to gain
more for the future.

I am glad that I had the harsh wisdom of my father to guide me in life.  I shall attain
what he was too weak to do.

Twice now, I have made an error that has hurt Sigator, and broken the laws.
Both times, it was with the absolute intention of enforcing and obeying.  The first time, I 
cast an iceshard at him instead of a frostshield, and this second, my forked lightning
struck at him, despite him being part of my party.

No matter, these issues are my own, and there is no way I should have made either error.

If I am lucky, then I shall be in Seantryn for the rest of my existence.  If not, the 
Spire will be done with me as being too wild and uncontrollable.  Neither of those
alternatives fills me with joy.

Still, I can hold my head up in that I tried to prevent the breaking of a law
within Hamsah while keeping within the law.  That much I did right.

I suppose there is nothing left for it but to wait and see what judgement the
Provost brings.

That bitch of a drow.

The more I think on it, the more I realize how much of this was the fault
of that drow, the Provost.  I asked - quite specifically - to be moved from the 
Voralian post, the healer there will not serve my needs regardless of what I offer.

I was told that I must remain there, when there were troubles in Hamsah.
I stood there, trying to dissuade them, I did my best to preserve the order
of that place, and the lawless brigands of the fortress insisted on pressing on.

It is them, and the Provost in her "wisdom" that caused this.

Mixed news...first, I am assigned to Seantryn, which was the mildest of the
punishments I could have expected.  In addition, the Provost asked me why Arlettien was not 
warranted when he choked me in Hamsah.  An interesting turn of events!


Perhaps there is something to this Provost, even I did not think to enforce
the law in that case.  I had presumed since I had joined the battle along with Sigator,
the Maran was safe from the law.

Still, I am in this cesspool.  I hate this place, but at least the healer will serve.

At last, patience and dedication have paid off. I am now a Provincial Magistrate, that
bitch Lamayinn knows the power I have, and knows that I will succeed after her.
Who else here has the least bit of talent for that?  Or desire?

I know there is more to come, I know that I shall have Provost in brief time.  Lamayinn is 
old, tired, worn in her habits, while I still have the fire burning within me.

These savages irritate me with their gibbering of Thar-Eris this, Thar-Eris that.
Celn in particular makes a habit of being particularly obnoxious, stripping his 
foes to the bone.  This is the treatment they shall obtain from me, and this anger shall
be focused at them, to raze their very refuge to the ground.

I will be Provost one day, perhaps not in this round, perhaps now.  I shall live
and outlast the other if there is one, and I shall wage war against these beastmen
and turn their woodlands into a tiled palazzo.  They shall then be allowed to
sweep the square, cleaning it of the little dust that is the remnants of Thar-Eris, sweeping
her into a sack and disposing of her in the midden.  Only then shall I be content.

Not the whole of what I would have wished, but I have managed to become Vindicator of
the spire.  I shall bide my time here, until the current Provost weakens and dies,
they always do, and I shall outlast as I have in the past.

The death of the first criminal was a pleasure, watching the shackles tear
into tender flesh, the panic as the guards struck at him, and the fatal blow that 
caved in his skull.

I shall enjoy this position in the meanwhile.

Finally, at long last, I have mastered my seventh path.  I admit, it was laziness and distraction
that led me to take so long to do so, counter to my earlier dedicated pursuit.

I am the Vindicator now, and this position suits me well until this Provost dies
or retires.  Forgive me for saying this, even to myself...actually, it is the
truth, so what does it matter?  The current provost is....uninspired, and uninspiring.
Pleasant enough, I suppose, but not half the Provost the last one was, and not one
tenth I will be.

I must just bide my time, again, this enforced patience irks me greatly.  Nothing 
for it though, Marcatis has chosen and I have nothing to do but wait and sharpen
myself.

What can I do to bring down this one, Gianath?

I have mastered all paths, and have finally reached the leadership of the Spire.
Gianath was weak in spirit, took her own life far sooner than I would have imagined,
though I am not entirely surprised.  I am already beginning to organize things again, make
the Spire strong.  I think I shall enjoy this position immensely.

Already, I have reinstated the outlander list that lagged under Gianath, and make
my self clear on the rules that we will follow, and the interpretations that are made
in the name of furthering the orderly society we all want.

I wonder what it was what led the Spire Lords to place that incompetent gnome
at the head, above me.  I suppose I will never know.

I have been Provost some time now.  I took the Spire from its weakness, and through
my activity and discipline, we are now strong, the fetish secure, and the Outlanders
broken.  I am impressed, to say the least, though not because of the facts
that are, but that it happened so quickly.

I knew that I would fill this mantle easily, and be successful, but
what surprises me is how easily the savages broke ranks and scatter.  It shouldn't,
really, but I had expected some battles against bitterly entrenched foes who 
would give up each step over blood and death.

Surprising how easily they broke.

Now I will work to strengthen the Spire as well as I can, preserve it against
the day the cycle turns and we are again embattled.  I will do this by grooming
Magistrates, and see if a worthy successor may come forward.  Though I am still relatively
young, I know that time passes quickly, and this must be planned for.  I am no
Gianath, to throw my hands up in despair, nor am I a Lamayinn, mothering the
Magistrates and coddling them.  Instead, they will grow hard and lean under my 
watch, stronger for it.

I am tired of these Imperials, with their "Enlilth this" and "Enlilth that".  I am 
quite tired of being told that I will be "allowed" to watch their cities.
I am equally tired of having allies that turn on me, stealing from me when the
ink on our deal is not even dry.

Zubei in particular has raised my ire.  After taking nearly one hundred
gold from me for various items, he steals a valuable ring from me!

I will have his head for that.  Twice so far, the War Master, but not 
the cautious blade.  He will fall in time, that much I am certain of.
And when he does, I will capitalize on it.

The Shadow Lord and I have an arrangement as well, after the 
rather pathetic way he panicked and died to a few cantrips.  I will not 
kill him, and will feed him some coins and trinkets, in exchange for the information
I need to track these fools down.

A fitting arrangement, to my taste.

I have told both the War Master and the Emperor that I will stop when
that fool of a felar is made anathema, and that is when we shall have peace.
The War Master, enamoured as most are of his armor, has promised to strip me bare
when I fall, and promised me war.  I wonder if he will manage that at all, 

I wonder if he has thought past his nearsighted rage to how that 
fits in with his oath.

No matter, time will tell, and there will be blood, but my cities will remain
safe.

I have had time to think, time to ponder, and time to plan.
Zubei will still die, that much I know, but the remaining Imperials
will not suffer from my wrath.  Instead, I will work to overthrow
the blade, Hanord, and perhaps aid the Dread Lord into power.

It is time to plan and think, rather than to simply kill.
Already, I have given the Shadow lord some gifts, trinkets to buy his
loyalty, and he has provided information.  The Dread Lord came over
easily, offering me information on the felar freely.

It is amusing how easily these Imperials turn upon each other in their
quest for power.  Unlike the Spire, they have nothing outside of that
to lead them on.

Quite a day, today, and an interesting offer...The Advisor to the Chancellor has
tried to recruit me to her cause.  I must admit to being tempted to it, 
I have long thought of the scions, and the powerful magics they wield, and 
I will admit that the thought of having those in my control would be...
pleasurable.  It would involve giving up all that I have worked for here,
but there is no place further for me to grow in the Spire, and I will admit
to being at times bored with the routine, the duties, and coddling of young Magistrates
straight from the Academy.

An interesting thought, indeed.  

I have thought now on the words of Paraloiut, and of the ennui that has set
in at the pinnacle of the Spire.  There is nothing more for me here, just 
the routine of daily tasks, the coddling of new Magistrates, and such mundane
things.  I have brought the spire to strength, and broken the outlanders, and I 
think it is now time I move on to strengthen myself instead.

I will make the proper arrangements to leave the Spire, putting forth Rinalas as
candidate for Provost.  He would do well, I think, being as Lord Marcatis said, more 
administratively-minded than I have been.  I know full well what I give up, the longevity 
of this mantle, the powers that come with this role, and perhaps even raising the ire of the
gods themselves, but I will withdraw myself from the Spire, and focus on the pursuit of
power instead.

I suppose it could be said that is all I ever was after, but my work here has been long and
tiring, dealing with idiot Magistrates, strengthening them only to have them fall on their
own blades.  I despise their weakness.

Let us see where my path leads me then.

Paralouit, old friend, I miss you.  Strange to say that, even to myself.

Despite that, I hold a great grudge against you and yours, the fate that leaves me
to live out the rest of my life as Provost instead of leading the chasm even now.
The wheel has turned, and that chance is past and gone now, and will not come again.
And so, the scions are now among my prey, arrogant as most of them are.

And I will start with Shiloh, mouthy child that he is.

I have had a long life, a very, very long life, and I am tired.  I have seen
the tides of war ebb and flow, outlived almost everyone I have known, and still I
am here.  When will I be resting?  I am in no hurry for that time, but this grows
wearisome.  The Spire is weakened now, I must pay more attention to that, recruit
better.

Still, not all of that lays on my head.  Applicants come and are inducted with relative
haste, but watching and guarding is dull by some minds.  They do not see the value
of this service, or the benefits that can be theirs.  I will have to promote that,
show them that there is merit in being a Magistrate, wealth and respect and growth.

I am almost too tired for this effort though, the last thing I will need to do
is to work to bring out my successor.  When I am gone, Lord Marcatis will endure, will
take over the guidance of the Spire until a suitable other shall be found.  Magistrate Rinalas
would figure in predominantly, but he is as old as I am I think, and as tired.

These old hollow bones almost look forward to the warmth of the inferno to rest.

I choose this, the manner of my passing.

I am tired, my body aged, but not old enough.

Two rings of Zurcon, and I am at last allowed to rest.
