Description

You see a slender, venerable elder. He is almost 6 feet tall and clad in clerical robes and light armor. His white hair has receded somewhat not quite covering his temples, but it retains a little of the curls of youth. Heavy lines furrow his face, especially around the eyes and brow, but rather than the weakness of old age, they give him a wise and regal appearance. Piercing brown eyes calmly seems to absorb every detail surrounding him. A finely groomed white beard enhance his firm jaw. Veins can clearly be seen through his pale skin but no spots blemish his hands or face. His attire is a mixture of various colors, but the net effect is surprisingly pleasant on the eyes. Every piece is of good quality and well maintained.

Ashmon grew up in Arkham. His father worked as a guard while his
mother was a servant in the cathedral. From them Ashmon learned the value of
hard labor, proper manners and respect for the gods.

During his childhood Arkham was often plagued by fires. His father
explained it was arson caused by dangerous outlaws known as
outlanders, savage men and beasts who only wanted to see the world
burn. Ashmon found his father very brave, keeping peace and order,
putting out fires. He too wanted to be a guardsman and do his share in
the great scheme of things.

Before coming of age, however, his world turned to ashes. Arkham was
once more under attack of the outlanders. This time his father was cut
down by the savages while trying to put out the fires. The fire spread
quickly and devoured their home. While his mother escaped at first,
the smoke and loss of husband and home meant she never quite recovered
and she died a few days later.

15 years and alone in the world, Ashmon wanted revenge on the
outlanders and turned his back on the gods of light, cursing them for
allowing this to happen.

At the cathedral he heard whispers of an immortal lord who fought the
chaos, and whose followers spread civilization. With a faint glimmer
of hope in his heart, Ashmon risked passage across the open sea in an
old canoe in search of a patron who could restore meaning to his life.

A few notes on behavior

Ashmon has a vision of a peaceful world where the inhabitants go about
their business in a civilized manner. 

Ashmon is polite, prefers things nice and tidy and likes to plan ahead.
He has mostly dealt with humans and is mildly xenophopic. 

He abhors fire and is extremely distrustful of people with a rural
background, associating them with the murderous outlanders. While
he prefers to keep his feelings under control in public, he will sometimes
break down and rage on perceived savages (which could be innocent farmers
and the like).

On felar and orcs

Ashmon has a tendecy to see things in black and white. Though he
considers himself a man of reason, he unconsciously group members of
the different races of Thera, seeing them as a whole, not individuals.

He find orcs revolting due to their grotesque appearance, limited
intellect and base desires. Some citizens openly work together with
orcs, making feeble excuses as how they are holding the leash of the
beast, where in reality they are panting after the monsters. Ashmon
will actively try to stop such demeaning behaviour.


In recent years the orcish war lord Ogrot has grown in power, often
allying with the savages of Prosimy. Ashmon acknowledges the cunning
of the orc, but has woved to bring him down.  Indeed, Ashmon tries to
purge Thera of the filthy orcs regarding them as dangerous as the
outlanders.

Ashmon furthermore despises felar, finding their beastly nature an
affront to his sensible tastes. After all, most of them are barely
capable of speech, let alone civilized behaviour. He opposes that
felar can rise beyond the blood oath, a notion that has only been
reinforced when he was betrayed by a felar shadow some years ago.

A new status

Returning to the imperial lands after an extended trip beyond the Sea 
of Despair Ashmon discovered that he was no longer a priest of the 
Divine sect, but rather a mere blood oath. 

At first he thought little of it. He had been a faithful servant for 
36 years, the savages still needed to be brought to heel and he still 
felt the blessing of Lord Destuvius. 

But he discovered that things were not that easy. He could not reclaim 
the imperial codex from the savage thieves that sometimes dared to 
steal it. He didn't have permission to access the imperial annals 
anymore.  Citizens half his age treated him like a novice and demanded 
his attention and service constantly for seemingly trivial tasks. 

Then after suffering defeat at the hand of some of the infidels of the 
Fortress of Light, feeling frustrated on several levels, he spoke out 
of turn to the elite imperial witch, Ulamette.

She kindly instructed him not to forget his stature, to prove his 
worth or be gone and that she would personally see to his death should 
a similar incident occur. 

Ashmon is full of shame for having forgotten the precepts of his 
faith. Furthermore he plots the downfall of Ulamette, hating her for 
bringing his weakness to light. 

He is determined to serve the Empire impeccably and regain his 
former status and more. After all opportunity comes to the faithful.

High Priest

For over 40 years Ashmon has served in the Imperial Divine Sect. Those 
with a spark of the divine in them have always been rare, but never 
has the sect hall been as empty as now.  The former high Priest, 
Atazerus, took his own life in shame, after having lost his office due 
to neglect. Over whom then, should Ashmon, now wearing the mantle of 
high priest, exert his dominence? 

Over the other sects, naturally. It is the duty of the divine sect to 
provide direction, guidance and purpose to the other sects. 
A skilled swordsman can overcome many foes. But a skilled preacher can 
win wars, sway nations. 

His service then, shall be one of spreading the true faith. We are all 
servants under Lord Destuvius. Let the others know of their role in 
the Grand Design, and find purpose therein.

Old age. Preparing for the end.

Ashmon wasn't much for admitting it, but he felt his age more for each
passing day. Getting up in the morning was harder. Old wounds bothered
him. He still had his wits about him, but he found he sometimes had to
look for the right words. A recent encounter with the anathema turned
wight, where his whole body began to decay rapidly, made it clear to
him that time is very much of the essence.

It was natural to prepare for the end. What work did he need to
finish? What would be his legacy?

1) "Peace and Prosperity". A series of three paintings showing some of
the fruits of civilization that the Empire brings to Thera.

Lord Destuvius has received "The Imperial Academy", but two paintings
are still unfinished. Need to put pressure on/motivate/provide with new sketches
painter Mellinoe to actually finish the paintings.  

2) Finish another work for the Divine Asylum.

Ashmon's life has been one of service, so that is the natural
candidate for a subject. However, another possibility is how the Elder
Devils can inspire servants of the Empire. Ashmon has discussed this
with priestess Miralik. Perhaps it is something to take up with Lord
Destuvius.

3) Recruit a proper healer for the Empire. 

This has proven tricky in the past, but if a likely candidate appears
making sure she is at first nursed, then committed is paramount.
