Description

A tall Arial stands before you.His chiseled face displays a prominent yellow beak and a visage covered in blue feathers. Two yellow-green eyes are sunken deep into his skull. Three braids of blue feathers curl around his neck, giving way to lean shoulders. Behind his shoulders you see the crest of two gray wings, their feathers contrasting sharply with the rest of his body. His long arms hang down to his waistline, giving the appearance of blue ribbons. The arms give way to hands, which are nearly devoid of feathers, instead they have been replaced by scars and worn flesh. Thick, stubby black talons punctuate the end of his hands. Below his waist his wings come to a point, the gray feathering seems darker here. Instead of feet, you see the trademark claws of the Arial, hooking menacingly from thin feet.

Skirmishers

The lighting crackled across the sky, causing the shadows of the young arials
to dance across the tent.  Atracius paced nervously at the front of it.The
orders had come in to strike the Mines when the storm reached its zenith, but
doubts lingered.  The fierce winds would batter the column as it snaked its
way through the crags and deep into the mountain.  Their armor would be
soaked and heavy, their enemies dry and dexterous.  And still, they prepared
for war.  

Atracius regiment was on the green side.  A band of young, hungry Arials who
yearned to prove themselves in the throes of battle.  They had been trained
by the strongest of the royal guard, as skirmishers.  To harass and whittle
down their foes.  And yet, the order came from the generals, they would lead
the charge into the Mines of Zakiim.  A dreaded place for any of the cloud
born.  

The crash of lightning and boom of thunder seemed endless in the desert. 
Between the howling of the wind he could hear the clink of metal and the
snapping of leather as his squad prepared for war.  Stepping back from the
front of the tint he caught the glares of the others.  Their faces were awash
with fear.  He nodded solemnly to them.If we remember our training we will
survive.  At least, that was the idea of it all.  

The front of the tent slid open.  Frothalius poked his head in.'It is time
we prove ourselves to the Emperor', and with that, the flap closed and the
storm worsened.


As they approached the mountains their armor grew heavy as the rains pelted
their shivering bodies.Atracius couldnt remember a time when the fear
coursed through him so strongly.  Up ahead the column halted, shadows moved
along the ridgeline.  They unsheathed their blades; he could hear the murmurs
of prayers in behind him.  The soldiers at the head of the column rose from
their positions and charged at the figures, filling the air with fierce
battle cries.  The rest of the column followed suit, then they halted.  The
sound of bleating traveled down the ravine echoing off the walls.  It was a
herd of mountain goats.A collective sigh of relief followed suit, then the
lightning came.

The Mountains of Death

Chaos erupted as arcs of lightning struck the column; screams of charred
Arials reached his ears.  As they pressed into the mountain a haunting call
entered the air.  The Miners!  They attack!, the first pick struck the
scout in the head, causing his skull to disintegrate under the weight of the
blow.  Atracius sprung into action, his swords become a whirlwind, hacking
and cutting anything everything in his path.  Even as his blades tore deeply
into the miners flesh, they pressed on, through the haze he could see their
eyes, a flicker behind their pupils, something held them.  Soon the mountain
path was crawling with them, hundreds poured out of unseen caves rushing the
column with a ferocity unseen by the young skirmishers.

A trumpet blared above the din of battle.  The call of retreat;Atracius
began to battle back down the path.  As they fought their way out, a fireball
rose in the sky and fell behind them, engulfing the exit in flame.  They were
trapped.   The miners began to redouble their efforts, one would fall, two
would replace them.  The cloud borns muscles ached under the strain of
battle.One by one they fell, the hands of death wresting breathe out of
their exhausted forms.  The fire claimed took its claim of them as well. 
Beyond the flame Atracius thought he saw something. A figured loomed through
the smoke, one of the generals from the academy stared into the battle, a
smirk fixed on his face.  He raised his hand and the fire died, the lightning
relented and the Miners froze in their places.  Atracius staggered towards
the general before succumbing to his wounds and collapsing into the mud. 
Through one eye he gazed above him as the general strode over his form. 
Another form emerged from the shadows and shook his hand.  In the dim light
he saw a tattoo of a dragons tooth on his hand.

The Falcon

Within his thatched hut Atracius dreamed, his body stirred in his hammock,
through the haze of battle and stench of death he felt himself dragged over
rocks and boulders.  Dragged through sand and muck; dragged so far he could
feel his wings tear and his flesh rupture under his own weight.When he
awoke he found his body covered in the salves of the nomads.  The wounds of
his flesh seemed like painful than those within his soul.  The betrayal
seemed to cause the deepest. 

His beak snapped wildly, causing a clicking sound to emanate far outside his
hut.  The physical wounds had grown since he was brought into the village by
the Winged Pestilence, Akedeh.  Yet, the appetite was not sated.  The thirst
of the deserts rose within him, with each mage he slew it seemed he was
partially quenched and yet the thirst grew.  He felt himself transported once
again to the trail.  In the distance he could see shadows moving along the
ridge, as he tried to pull his swords from their sheaths he froze, his arms
paralyzed, all that moved were his eyes.  As the shadows approached he could
see their faces, a giant scream began echoing off the mountain walls. 
Closer they edged, so close he could feel the heat of their breath.  Their
ethereal hands began to claw at him, causing his flesh to tear apart; he
gazed down as they tore into his ribcage exposing a beating heart.  As the
freezing grasp of the spirits clutched his heart a soothing calm washed over
him.  Over the din, the solemn call of a falcon pierced the night air.  A
freezing gust of wind swirled around Atracius then slammed into the spirits
causing them to recoil in horror.  The wind pins the spirits against a rock
and crushes them into thousands of fragments.  Atracius felt himself lifted
into the air and carried towards the mountains.As the dream fades the
vision of a frozen village with giants mulling about it fades from view.
