Role
Witness To A Fight
Added Wed Apr 15 18:57:50 2015 at level 22:
Hiding in the shadows of dusk just behind some bushes on a rise south of the Eastern Road near
Blackclaw Village an excited and slightly frightened felar boy watched a confrontation begin.
One of the combatants is a burly, armored man, human most likely, wielding two large swords like they
were nothing more than broom handles. His opponent was slight of build but full of grace and speed. He
wears dark colored clothing that appears loose enough to offer free movement but not so loose as to
get tangled up in those movements. The captivating thing about this combatant to the young felar is
that he faces down the massive human with nothing but his hands. His movements are lightning fast and
he dodges most of the blows with ease, except for a few times when he turns the large blades aside with
his bare hands as if they were made of steel themselves. The boy watches nearly unblinking, his
attention is fully captivated, as the smaller combatant ends the contest with a series of amazing,
acrobatic kicks followed up with a few well-placed punches and a hip throw that seems to defy gravity
itself considering the comparative size of the two.
In the days and months that followed the boy, Aufang, took to wearing his clothes in his best imitation
of the same loose style he had seen the victor of that fight wear and obsessively went about kicking and
punching the air, jumping and rolling as if he were that same fighter. Seeing this bizarre change in
behavior, the boys father, Nerro, asked him what he thought he was doing and the boy told him about
the fight he had witnessed and how he desperately wanted to be able to fight just like the man he had
seen. Nerro, a former warrior himself turned farmer recognized that his son had witnessed a very skilled
assassin in combat. Knowing that Thera is a dangerous place and that the day would come where Aufang
would have to learn to fight for himself, Nerro came to a decision.
Having made the arrangements a few weeks later, Nerro woke the boy at dawn, told him to gather his
things and come along. As they walked west along the banks of Voralias Tears, Nerro told Aufang that
they were headed to see a man he had known in his younger fighting years named Master Chupin.
Master Chupin, he explained, is an old arial who had retired to a secluded cabin on the outskirts of the
Silverwood and he was a master assassin who would train the boy to fight just as he desired.

Young Aufang stands balanced on a log in a fighting stance and begins to move down the log through a
fighting routine. Hold! Master Chupin barks with a thump of his staff on the ground. The boy freezes,
straining to maintain his balance, one foot lifted off the log half way through a kick. Master Chupin walks
slowly around the boy seemingly oblivious to the fact that the boy is sweating to maintain his balance on
the log, Our martial art is representative of the Celestial Dragon, and balance is central to the dragon.
Without it you have nothing. You must learn when to be still and when to move. It needs to be part of
your fighting. Not just the physical act of maintaining balance, but, having balance in your fight. You
must balance your attack with defense and your defense with attack. Before Chupin could go any
further Aufang crashes off the log in a tangle of swinging arms and legs. With a hint of amusement
around his eyes Chupin commands, Again!
Aufang, now a bit taller and heavier, moves through a routine in a small circle of trees. With practiced
precision he punches and kicks, pausing every so often to hold a difficult balancing pose with calm ease.
Master Chupin standing off to the side is instructing, Balance is more than just fighting. It is a part of
life. Look about you. There is no shadow without light. There is no summer without winter. You can see
opposite forces balancing themselves everywhere in the world around you. That is part of life and life is
the Celestial Dragon. Dragon is a real being, Aufang. No doubt you have heard the story of the
beginning. Of the Lord of Order and the Forsaken One. But I am telling you that even they, Order and
Chaos, are forces that need be balanced out and came after the Celestial Dragon. For the Celestial
Dragon is the power of life itself. When you look at the stars on a clear night you can see the Dragon
there. Look for the bright central band of stars that seem to wrap about the world. No matter what day
of the year you look, you can see the Dragon there. That is because he is eternal. He encircles the world,
never ending and never beginning. This is why his symbol is that of a dragon twisted about itself eating
its own tail. There is one more thing you must know. The magic that you hear of is also part of the
Celestial Dragon. Just as the Dragon is life, and life requires balance to thrive, magic is a part of the same
power of life, and it too requires a balance. One must beware of those who seek to destroy magic, for
doing so would create a void and destroy life.
The Final Lesson
Added Wed Apr 15 19:01:48 2015 at level 22:
Aufang, now fully grown, sits eating a meal besides his now very aged master. Chupin regards him
saying, Aufang, your instruction is nearing an end. I have one last thing to teach you and the rest you
must learn through your own experiences. Tell me, what do you consider a man who consistently makes
the right decision and gives good council? Aufang laughed, Are you describing yourself, Master? I
would call him wise. Chupin nodded his agreement, Yes, Aufang. Wisdom. Just as life, magic and
balance are part of the Dragon, so is Wisdom. For it takes a wise man to recognize and understand how
the other three work together in this world and it takes a wisdom to act accordingly. The people of this
world have will of their own. They are not slave to some instinct that automatically puts them in balance
with the world and because of this we will see times of discord. We must be able to discern what to do
during those times to right the balance and that takes wisdom. Whats even more, Aufang, is that we
have a place in this world and when the world is at balance we must determine what our place is within
that balance. A wise man understands this and learns what his place is. If you so choose, there are
people who have made it their life work to maintain the balance and you could join them. They may not
know or understand the Dragon but they serve his purpose all the same.
A Guardian of Balance
Added Wed Apr 29 13:09:00 2015 at level 33:
Nexus, Guardians of the Balance. They were the people that Master Chupin spoke of. After leaving
Master Chupin, Aufang made his way to Galadon and began his days as an adventurer. He wasted little
time seeking out the Nexuns and after some discussion with a fellow assassin Thillquill he was granted
an audience with the Platinum Knight, Maranintok, Rhyme of Resistance. Marintok allowed Aufang a
place within the Island on the condition that he find an item that represents balance to him in the city of
his last battle. That city was the Galadonian Settlement in the past. There he found a shopkeeper that
sold a dragons tooth that was actually a magical talisman. Aufang found that to be a wonderful
representation of balance as it was a symbol of the celestial dragon, being a dragons tooth, and a tool
of magic.
Over the years Aufang worked at his assassins craft, working to restore the balance in what ways he
could. He found that he most enjoyed hunting those who tipped the scales out of balance. During times
of balance he thought of the hunt and considered the last piece of advice Master Chupin gave him. He
began to understand what he meant. A wise man does truly know himself and must find his place in the
balance. Everything has a purpose and Aufang was a hunter. Not only is the instinct to hunt very strong
with his race but the skills of his profession were intended for it. Those skills were meant for tracking
down and dispatching prey. That, he decided, was his place in the balance. To be a hunter. Aufang
reasoned to himself that if he did not do this he would be working against the balance by rejecting his
place within that balance.
Aufang also often thought of his father Nerro. It was through Nerros wisdom that he had been set on
the path to become an assassin of the Island. It is something he would never forget. He often wondered
if he would see his father again. He was not sure. But, until that day he decided he would honor his
father by taking his name for a surname. Aufang Nerro.
Too Much Magic?
Added Wed Jun 10 16:34:33 2015 at level 36:
The Abolisher of Discord and Lord Twist seem to have differing opinions on the amount of magic the
lands can properly sustain. Lord Twist, and rightfully so being Lord of Magic, believes that there can
never be too much magic in the lands, while the Abolisher, and Lord Daevryn and Lady Rayihn, for that
matter, believe that there is a threshold, albeit a high one, that magic can cross where it becomes out of
balance. This was all revealed to Aufang not long ago when the Abolisher chided the Keepers for magic
being out of balance and Twist revealing his opinion on the matter.
Aufang himself tried to agree publically with Lord Twists view on magic, since his own belief in the
Celestial Dragon and how magic is part of the same power as that of life itself meshed with Lord Twists,
however, he was corrected on the matter by the Abolisher. Lord Twist, himself being in a position to do
so, seems to concede the point to his fellow immortal overseers. Aufang envied Twist for being able to
hold this view and not be subject to the positions of those around him, however, that would not be the
first time a mortal envied the divine. It is part of what sets them apart. Aufang has decided that he will
do his duty as a Keeper and work to correct magic should it become too powerful in the lands.
Apparently the saying is true that you can have too much of a good thing.
Omens
Added Fri Jun 12 14:04:26 2015 at level 39:
While searching for magical items of power, Aufang and Schnelwar found themselves in the Village of
the Frost Giants. It was there they heard the grinding of a great glacier and a frosty voice booming out
promising to come and make changes for the Island. The voice confirmed the premonition that
Draknoor had not long before that. At first this forewarning of someone coming as an agent of change
for the Island seemed ominous and dangerous. It was not long after that, Aufang witnessed the glaciers
to shake again and the Overlord of Balance Deormdel arose as a divine power of balance and watcher
over the Keepers.
Aufang was honored to meet this divine Lord upon his rising and found the meeting with him
fascinating. It would seem that his teachings of balance in combat mirror the art of the Celestial Dragon
that Aufang himself practiced. They talked of many things, and most important to Aufang, the newly
risen Lord complimented his strength.
Around the same time as Deormdels rising a tailed star appeared in the sky. The Overlord of Balance
suggested it would be good for a Keeper to search the Lyceum records for appearance of this star in the
past. Aufang did just that and found a writing concerning the star. The star it would seem is called the
Sphynx. Scholars call it that because of some obscure writings that told of that the arrival of the star
heralded the rising of a celestial being. At first, Aufang was excited, thinking this being to be the celestial
dragon, however, as he read further he became convinced it was not as this being would cause havoc on
his arrival. Since then, Aufang has been seeking the advice of astronomers hoping to find which
constellations this stars path aimed it towards in hopes of learning more, just as scholars did in ages past
when the star first appeared.
Glacial Interest
Added Wed Jul 29 15:04:24 2015 at level 51:
Aufang has become a follower of Lord Deormdel. He first became interested when he learned that
Deormdel preached balance in combat. Aufang saw some parallels between that teaching and the
martial artists philosophy of the Celestial Dragon he learned in his younger years that led him to be a
Keeper of Balance in the first place. Aufang began to understand that balance in combat to Deormdel
was more about being balanced in your forms and attack and defense. It was about a wider view of
combat. At first, he struggled with this concept thinking it meant just numbers, until he discussed the
topic with the first priestess of the glacier, Aaoltha.
Aaoltha had a much different view than balance in combat by numbers. She viewed it from more a
macro point of view. It taught Aufang quite a bit, most especially that to understand what this concept
means one had to understand themselves, and that started with being honest with themselves. Aufang
now understood that he did see the value in balance in combat with numbers, at certain times. He knew
his own abilities, but, also began to see that sometimes greater purposes add to the scales of balance
that make the numbers part less important, or balance them out.
Aufang had also believed that one could find balance in everything. But, he now began to theorize the
reason for this was because balance was necessary for existence. This stemmed back to other things he
learned from Aaoltha, where she believed that balance was necessary for success within an entity or
organization. Her empire she believed was successful because it was balanced out by the sects. Aufang
took that a step further to realize that must also mean that it is key for existence. He speculated that by-
gone organizations, such as Entropy, may be this way because they lacked balance.
Aufang has told what hes learned to any who will ask him. There are many young followers of Deormdel
and so Aufang has been busy with it, something he does not mind at all.
