Description
Five feet tall with a muscular, stocky build for one of his kind, this
ivory feathered arial screams of a life of fighting. A one inch red line
starts at his black beak and runs between his large black eyes up and
over his feathery head. It continues down his backbone where it splits
into four lines between his shoulders and wings. One set of lines runs
from his shoulder down the back of each arm to the tip of the middle
finger on his clawed hand. The other set following the same path on his
wing also ending at the tips. His posture is ramrod straight and his
movements flow from one to the next with the elegance of a dancer. He
wears a necklace around his neck with a small vial attached. Something of
significance no doubt. He is wearing.....

The chaos of battle was all around them. The general had already broken
his sword and his spear was stuck deep within the frost giant in front of
him. With a call for his axe and shield a young arial, no more than
fifteen, runs out and hands it to him. Knowing full well his purpose
was fulfilled he quickly backs up as the general puts his whirling axe to
deadly use. It was a brilliant ploy. Having his archers exit out the
woods a full thousand yards away from the main line looked like a
tactical mistake. One that the frost giant leader was quick to capitalize
on sending his cavalry straight at them giving General Balize no chance
to reinforce. But with the cunning those on his forces had come to
expect the archers quickly fired their two readied volleys and retreated
back into the woods. Now with Jumnarl's forces without their cavalry the
general attacked. Allowing the archers to pick off the cavalry as they
rode back to the main fight. Jumnarl called a retreat and as the rout was
pursued a cloud rolled over Balize and his troops. Quickly his soldiers
start to choke and wheeze and before an order can be issued three small
fiery dots streak toward the army. The explosion was massive, blowing
Balize back and decimating his troops. His squire runs to him, the
first to arrive, desperately trying to get him to his feet. Looking
around he watches helplessly as the three mages spin spells and lay waste
to the troops around him. Coughing blood and ash, he stumbles forward
trying to get to the magi but before he can the frost giant is upon him.
With a mighty sweep of his axe he disembowels the General. With a
triumphant cry he sweeps off into the chaos once more leaving the Balize
to die on the frozen battlefield.

I remember his words as he lay there, his entrails exposed to the icy
air, his head in my lap gasping for every breath. He said "Too powerful.
Never meant for war. Never meant for mortals. Never would have guessed
Jumnarl capable of this. No warrior should need.... " the rest was
indecipherable. Lost in an explosive cough of blood. Lost in death. I
remember my tears. I remember the explosions and the screams. I filled my
canteen with his blood. I don't know why. I just knew I always wanted a
part of him with me. I was his squire. And I would always be.
I try to remember a lesson he taught me every day. "Never yell out in
battle unless your cry will bring inspiration or fear.". A favorite of
mine. With the academy done I've set out on my path. I add some of his
blood to the dye and hand it back to the Herald. He follows Iunna which I
needed for such a spiritual ceremony. With delicate grace and prayers to
her he takes his two fingers and begins at my beak painting up between my
eyes and over my feathered scalp. Now you will always be a part of me.
Your blood on my backbone to give me strength and courage and to remind
me no matter how great I become I will always be your squire.

The sun was rising over the desert as I was brought before him with two
others. I was so young, barely fourteen, and such a weak little thing.
Just as we were brought forth a storm came out of nowhere. Huge
raindrops pelted the dry sand and I watched as it drank it in, not
noticing where I was shoved until I looked up directly into his eyes.
Immediately I froze with fear, unable to break away from his gaze, his
commanding presence taking hold of me more solid than any block of ice.
Just then a crack of lightning flew across the sky and as the others
jumped I still stood motionless. It was the only time I remember him
making a mistake. His hard gaze held me so that I barely registered the
lightning which he took for a sign of courage. Immediately it stuck his
sword into the sand and set to making me his squire.
"This will be the last stand of the Thri-kreen so I've got to make this
quick. We have many long miles of marching to the Frozen tundra after
this battle so repeat after me. I swear by this sword...."
*SMACK* The hard slap brings me from the past to the here and now. The
smell of fire and sweat fill the air, as Tahren stares me down.
"Either swear your oath to me or begone and quit wasting my time.
There's a war to be fought."
I hold his gaze this time with no fear in my soul, your blood on my back,
and I say the solemn words.
I swear by Boltthrower's axe.......

I have taken your name since my blood is as much mine as yours. The great
Lady Iunna has seen fit to speak to me and I find more of myself through
her. In speaking to Garwen I have learned of my poetry. It is my tactics
and fighting and so, once again, I have you to thank Balize. What you
taught me early on has brought me to her. Though you will always be
within my thoughts this is the last time I will visit your grave . I
have my own war now. My own battle to command. And a new commander to
follow. I am a soldier once more. So rest well, I am sure we will meet
again.

The wind was crisp as it flew across the mountain pass. We had just set
up camp at the peak after such a long journey from the desert. The smell
of pines was lightly in the air but was soon overpowered by the garlicy
tang of sweat. We came upon Thruger, a cloud giant commander, training
his troops in combat. I remember the smile that played across his face
as we stopped and after a while Balize turned to me.
You know why these are some of my best battlefield warriors? Because
they are never without a weapon. Watch them. Tell me what you see.
I turn my eyes to them, watching as each battles another. Their swift
strikes, different weapons in each hand. Long do I watch, yet Balize
stands with me with infinite patience. Finally, after what had to seem
like an eternity to him, it dawns on me. The warriors hands are mirror
images of each other. Each using their weapons with equally deft skill,
with no weakness or vulnerability. After voicing this he nods curtly and
we move on, but I see the smallest of smiles part his lips.
You want to be a true warrior, then you need to use either of your
weapons in either of your hands. Its more than being ambidextrous, its
about truly meshing your body with your weapons.

We are in the command tent looking, Balize is looking over the map of the
frozen wastes thinking about the start of the campaign. We had marched
down the other side the past week and I remember never feeling this cold
in my life. Our encampment was set at a crossroads and the General
quickly spun and headed out of the tent for some fresh air. Dutifully I
followed, and we crossed south seeing smoke rise from a tower in the
distance. As he headed towards it we passed his skirmish group headed by
Varthalas, his elven commander. He was wearing a newly created pelt of
what looked to be leopard skin and as I slowed to admire it I saw the
rest of his soldiers training. Balize barely noticed me stop and only
stopped himself because he did not hear the beat of my wings. Only then
did he look back and see my mouth agape as I watched the soldiers train
in awe.
There movements were so fast as to deceive the eye and the General was
beside me once again before I could recover. With a quick nod he spoke.
You will see no giants here. Only elves, half-elves, and your kind,
arial. With the exception of Darthus. With his indication I looked at
the lone human keeping pace with the exercise. They will never have
strength on their side. For every hit they take from giant kind they
must return three. But if they return five.....
With that he smiles, nods curtly, and continues on his way.
