Aztezul von Strigein the god-King of the New World, Chancellor of Eternal Night

Hello there.

I hadn't planned to write this. I had thought it may be best
to keep you guessing through the decades as to who I am and
why I do what I do. However upon deep, introspective reflection
I found that my reluctance to share with you is born of my own
innate, unquenchable desire for obscuration. There is a certain
exquisite pleasure in being the only one to know the truth. A
great ecstasy in weaving the subjective reality of your inferiors.

But you are not my inferior, are you? No. You hold a power unending.
Of which I am jealous. Of which I aspire to.

So where shall we begin then? The beginning, I suppose? I've had
so many names in my several decades that I struggle to recall the
first. My parents were the simple type. I wish I could spice this
story with tales of abuse or debauchery but I fear they are not to
blame for appetites. I left them as soon as I was able to. Working
my way through a variety of roles in a variety of places where I
always took a new name and a new story. This acting was therapeutic
for me. You see, I never learned to truly fit in with the masses.
The traits I uphold, what makes me unique, is on a different
evolutionary track. I don't *need* what sustains most Therans.

I began to mimic it out of boredom more than anything. I could tell
you these growing pain tales but I fear it would bore you as well.
Instead I will jump ahead to where things get interesting: when I
became Dr. Haeforn.

I reached an outlying Village in the great South with no real plans.
The younger me never had plans, you see. I was a predator in the winds
and I went wherever it carried me. Upon reaching this village it was
obvious that the simple peasants were afflicted by something. There
were tents set up with dozens inside moaning and carrying on with 
great dramatics. I immediately knew my new role and I introducted
myself to the healer as Dr. Ilgrun Haeforn.

The art of the healer is split between spirituality and medicine and
I knew I could never pass as a chosen of the gods, despite my aptitude
for the masquerade. Instead I explained that the Empress of Seantryn
Modan herself had dispensed me to help find a cure for... whatever this
was. I was given resources aplenty, a small building that had served
as a butcher's shop prior to the outbreak. Fitting, I thought.

As I mentioned before I've never felt any kinship with other living
beings. It's important to note that I never felt any ill-will toward
them either. I was just different and ultimately I didn't see their
purpose. As I continued to become the man I am I fell prey to my own
compulsions. The first life I took flooded me with a feeling that was
orgasmic. The second I took slower and by the third, I was hooked.

The third was special for another reason. She was the first that I
combined my newfound lust for flesh with my first love: deception.
She trusted me when I cut into her. She may have even loved me. 

In many ways my actions in this village were chasing that dragon.
As a Doctor with "medicine" I had numerous patients entrusting me
with their health. Powerless under my authority. I indulged.

During this indulgence I tested a great many things on these patients.
From which I found something else that I am inherently adept at:
necromancy. I'd studied in the past but it wasn't until I dissected
my latest victims that I found I had a keen sense for the body itself.

When I animated my first, whom I commissioned as my "Nurse", I realized
something else: I enjoy the company of the dead. They're much different
than the living. Far less insulting. Far more interesting. Far more...

Useful.

I explained the piling bodies as being those who were lost to this
mystery plague. Often I would declare them dead days before they were
actually gone. I'd say I'd burned their corpses when in actuality they
were locked in the butcher shop's basement. The only problem with this
was the other healers. You know, the *actual* doctor's were making
great progress in treating their patients. 

I also learned a valuable lesson in claiming relationships with people
such as an Empress. When a traveler from her court mentioned never having
heard of me before. Well, let's just say the dogs were now on my trail.

I would not be here to pen this today if not for, ironically, a basic
mortal function. I was in the privy behind the "hospital" when they came
for me. I watched through the partly open door as they kicked down the
door. I heard the screams as they discovered my workshop in the basement.
I slipped into the darkness and headed north with nothing.

I entered the academy in Seantryn Modan and relocated myself to the city
of Udgaard. I was days into my formal practice as a necromancer when I saw
it. A simple piece of parchment tacked under dozens of other papers:

***WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: DR. ILGRUN HAEFORN***
***REWARD: 250 GOLD***

Beneath that was a crude sketch but accurate enough that I once again felt
the all-too-mortal urge to defecate. 

I'd entered the academy as Aztezul von Strigein. An old face I'd sometimes
wear when I wanted to impress a young lady in a seedy bar. I'm a Barovian
nobleman with a high ranking post in the Eastern Militia. I wear an overcoat
sewn with necromantic runes appropriate for this title. 

When people think you're a nobleman, they treat you... well, nobly. Is that
a word? It seems like something a nobleman should know....

I digress, I was a "nobleman" on the run. I did everything I could to change
my appearance but I quickly realized that despite my change in vocabulary 
and accent I would have a difficult time holding up against a court of my
accusers. I was in Galadon, contemplating my options when I saw a Magistrate
walk by. This is when it hit me. Who is going to put a Magistrate, a civil
servant, on trial?

I ran and pledged to the captain and found my way to the ranks. I relaxed a
bit, until the Provincial sent me to Seantryn Modan for my first post. The
same city where half the continent was hunting for me. I spent those first
many weeks hiding in my guild, mastering my new craft. A few people looked
at me twice but no one accused me of being Dr. Haeforn, whom they were now
calling "Doctor Death". 

In truth I think the stories of the Doctor's depravity were so obscene that
many assumed them exaggerated. How could such a being exist, after all?

The answer? Very carefully.

Careful is something I'm learning as I go. Magistrate von Strigein has
luxuries that my past incarnations did not. Though I am already tempted to
....indulge. In fact I smuggled a commoner from Voralian City to the Hamsah
Mu'tazz guild. I inflicted many horrors upon him in mastering my craft. 
They are still looking for him, I'm told. But they will never find him.
Whatever is left of him has been banished through the grate to the Ghoul
Tunnels.

Despite this I respect the Law and what it grants me. You won't have to
worry about me dabbling in the gray zone and bending it to fit my whims.
No, the protections it provides me are far too valuable to risk. But I
must wonder what will become of my urges? How will I scratch this itch?
Will the itch continue once I Become something else?

Time will tell, for now I am content to continue my masquerade and to
deeper indulge into the role. Perhaps I will seek out a Patron that
understands me and my deceptions. Is that you? If so, please don't hesitate
to leave a sign.

It is imperative that Magistrate von Strigein grow in respect, wealth and
power. That will be my immediate goal. The Provost is easily manipulated
and I suspect he will make my path an easy one. Beyond that is important
that no one learns of my true identity. I will do anything necessary to
keep my secrets. Anything.

But if it all falls apart then so be it. I will be reborn anew. In a
different place, with a different name but the end goal will always remain
the same: Power.

And that's the Gods honest truth.

Hello again.

Seasons have come and gone and I'm still here. I've settled in nicely to
my role as a Magistrate of the Sultanate of Hamsah Mu'tazz. I was worried
when we last communicated, very worried in fact, that I would be found out.
But that hasn't happened. To my amusement no one seems to care about much
in the mainlands. No one has gone so far as to even ask me where I came
from or why I'm here. It makes me wonder if everyone is harboring some deep
secret that makes them act disinterested. Or perhaps everyone is just as
self absorbed as me? Either way, our secrets are safe.

The Fortress fell into a crack, or something. Who cares? Not me.

The Provost is a simpleton. The lack of Provincials proves he's secretly an
acolyte of Morian Greed who doesn't want anyone to threaten his own influence.
He's barred me from summoning and killing creatures in the Necromancer's guild.
Do you know what we do behind these walls? If you eliminate the killing and the
torture we're just any other guild. This is in an attack on all that is
indecent and I will not stand for it. He will be dealt with.

Speaking of Morianism I've visited the church a few times now. Interesting
cult of Sin but I don't see my favorite vice represented. Though I'm beginning
to see elements of it in other pillars of vice. Maybe something to look into
more?

I've mastered every spell taught to me and I'm one step closer to the 
inevitable. I can almost taste the Becoming. It tastes like sand. Gallons and
gallons of sand.

Killing time is all I have left to do now. Well, that and killing Villagers.

I will change these realms forever. Perhaps you are beginning to see that?

I'm sorry it's been so long.

I've shed my skin, you see. I had to wait until I was comfortable in my new form.

I have Become what I always promised you I would. Of all the inevitabilities this
was the most powerful. Blood no longer flows in these veins, only pure mana. I am
still fallible, but the power is unending.

You may hear me refer to other Therans as mortals. This is not to imply that I view
myself as a God. No, I know that I exist somewhere inbetween what you are and what
I once was. This is purely a masquerade for the simpletons.

And why shouldn't they feel inferior to me? I am a god-King, small g, capital K. I
have succeeded Alvirin as Provost of the Spire and my reign, which will last an aeon
will redefine everything about Thera as we have known it.

They claim the Becoming will breed madness. But what you must understand is that by
their parameters I've always been mad. The Becoming killed nothing that was not already
dead. I am finally as I should be. In my new skin.

Now then, for the future... I cannot say it just yet, but you'll have a vague idea as
the next of the inevitabilities fall into place. Just do not blame what I do on madness.

No, it is brilliance.

Something interesting happened today. I thought you might like to hear the tale.

I walked into Udgaard, the guards and stray dogs alike made a path for me and mine.
This level of respect that my new form carries is... pleasing and well deserved.
I walked to their large poster board, tacked with many wanted posters and pleas
for bountyhunters to find the missing. Near the bottom, tattered but still seemingly
fresh was a sketch of a man. Underneath it read Dr. Ilgrun Haeforn 1000 gold dead
or alive. This wasn't the sketch of me as a young man, no it was aged. As though
an artist took an estimate of what an older Dr. Haeforn might look like.

I glanced to my right, to see one of my Spire Lieutenants averting his eyes. "Does
he remind you of someone?" I asked, but my man would not answer. "N-no, Sir." I
turned my zombie of a stout dwarven smith and asked him. His reply was "N-nooo, Si-
iiir." "That's what you sound like, Lieutenant. I said.""

I turned my attention back to the paper. I was a handsome man wasn't I? I had Sayra
paint my likeness so that I'd never forget. Little did I know I'd be finding these
mementos all over Thera. Still! After all these years, Dr. Haeforn lives on.

But he doesn't. He's transcended death by Becoming death. And he avoided justice,
by becoming the Provost Magistrate.

It's beautiful, isn't it? The painting *I* am making?

Just imagine what it will look like a thousand years, when I'm still here.

Hello there,

When we began our journey together did you think "This is a man who could make a King a 
Prince with a mere quill?" Did you ponder if I could win a war without shedding a drop of
blood? Did you think I could drive the self-professed most powerful man in Thera to a noose?

It's okay if you didn't. I understand that in the days of my flesh I may have appeared arrogant.
Delusional. Inexperienced. But I have done everything I said I would do. And I have so much more
to come.

The world was never big enough for Oniflond and I. We were comrades in arms, once. I respected 
him then. Just as I did when he drew his last breath. But the world was never big enough. He
knew this when he bent his knee to me. When he paid Tribute to my own slice of dark divinity.
He hoped that would be enough. But it wasn't. In order for the New Order to prosper, it must
first shed the skin of the Old. Oniflond had to go and he knew this. He chose the easy way. He
gifted me his Empire with his sacrifice.

History will not forget my friend, Prince Oniflond. He will forever be a footnote in my saga.
That was all he could ever have hoped for. For it is my time. My Age. My Order.

I would tell you what comes next but I'm not sure I can trust you now. I no longer have the veil
of delusional inexperience to hide behind, you see.
