Description
A short and wide dwarf is here looking proud. Golden locks of long
hair tied back into a braid tumble from beneath a regal looking stone
helm. Two eyes the color of emeralds peer out from beneath golden
brows. A large bulbous triangular nose stoutly hangs above lips
that look to be carved from granite, reaching nearly from ear to ear
in a perpetual joyous grin. A curled and well groomed beard sprouts
around the frame of his blocky face, dangling near his mid-section.
The beard is braided in three places and adorned with several runic
beads. His wide torso and belly are covered in a suit of stone armor
the color of marble, swirls of metallic grey and white gleaming in
the sunlight. Large shoulder pads made from the same material cover
his broad shoulders, runes engraved on the surfaces. He wields a
large whitesteel halberd, of dwarven craft in both hands.
The three runic beads, each adorning a braid of his beard, seem to be
the runes for 'Hope', 'Persistence and Dedication', and 'Mercy'.
Upon his right bicep, a very brightly glowing Sun rising over a broken
blade glimmers upon his rough skin.
Role
Balgrum's prehistory.
Added Thu Mar 10 14:07:09 2016 at level 14:
Balgrum Brightbeard grew up a young dwarf in Akan. Son of dwarven parents of
good reputation, his father a blacksmith, and his mother a renowned member of
the clergy. His youth was spent working long tiring hours in the forge with
his father, and in the evenings studying the teachings of Lord Avderlain
with his mother in the Stone's Embrace. He grew strong, working the forge
with his Father, and learned much of Mercy and Peace from his mother. A
strong balance of physical and mental activity for a young dwarf. As
Balgrum grew older, and his beard grew longer - he was forced to choose
between the profession of his Father, and the work of his mother. Balgrum
loved working the forge with his Father immensely for the hard physical work
it entailed, and the reward of physical prowess that it garnered him.
However, his mind was often distracted by thoughts of moral and ethical
obligation and the spiritual side of his life spent with his mother. After
years and time spent between the two professions, Balgrum realized his heart
was with the clergy, and that he would continue his life as a clergyman
himself. Though his mother was a healer, Balgrum did not want to be as
passive in his work as his mother had been. He decided that he would join
the guild of Shamans instead, and seek to travel out into Thera and preach
the good word of his deity, forcibly if necessary - although rarely would he
ever mortally harm another sentient being - no matter how dark the heart
might be. Balgrum always saw a chance for redemption in the eye's of others
and beyond all else wished to help Theran's embrace the light of the sun in
their hearts!

Having joined the Fortress of the Light, Balgrum struggles with his path
somewhat. The Maran wish to kill, and as a scribe, tempering their crusade
against evil proves challenging. He has made several good friends, chiefly
the Captain of the Maran, Gulrom. The Tribunal paladin Aesoakob, the village
thief Ild who is also a devotee of Mercy. Gulrom and Balgrum became fast friends
and Gulrom has been a great teacher about armor and tactics. He is very saddened by
the unexpected news of his passing, but encouraged by Gulrom's belief and faith in
in him. Ild has proven very interesting as an acquantaince. Always warning
him of any dangers within the shadows, and proving to be very tactful in her
pursuit of mages, and finding ways that don't involve killing them to get her
way. She is also an accomplished poet, and Balgrum loves her poems. Aesoakob
and Balgrum also became fast friends, and is one of Balgrums favorite people
to discuss philosophies with. Being a champion of Deormdel, naturally their
beliefs differ a bit, but after many talks, both Balgrum and Aesoakob have
agreed to see the world a bit through each others eyes.

Going into middle-age, with a bit of grey finally showing in his beard -
Balgrum begins to ponder the current state of things, and his inevitable
age, and failing health creeping up on him. Much has changed since his
youth, after the Fortress fell into relative ruin, with the passing of
Gulrom, and the Cardinal Jorje, and many of the other Squires and Scribes
of that era. Mournagr Stonehand and Balgrum were left in relative solitude
within the fortress, against an increasing presence of Darkness. Mournagr
became like a brother to Balgrum, also hailing from Akan, and as his path
unfolded, and he struggled with attaining the blessing of a missing Lady
Baerinika, Balgrum witnessed Mournagr slowly slip from the good graces of
the light. A fate spoken of to those who choose to protect and defend the
innocent, as Marans, and sometimes Scribes. He tread the line too closely
and after Jormyr gave him his blessing, Balgrum watched and attempted to
warn Mournagr of his descent into darkness. This was a very painful thing
for Balgrum to witness, and steeled Balgrum against the possibility that
future Squires and Scribes may tread down the same road. In the end,
Mournagr died defending the Light, as he had in his youth, and for his
part - Balgrum wept for the loss, and his inability to council Mournagr
during his descent into the chaotic path of the Lord of chaos, Jormyr.
Middle Age update 2
Added Thu May 19 12:11:40 2016 at level 51:
With Lord Aarns return, and Avderlain and Baerinika unseen for over a
century - the Fortress has grown strong again, and Balgrum is happy to
not face tremendous odds all the time when he wakes. A new Captain is
chosen by Aarn, an Elf - which Balgrum likes for the most part, as much
as a dwarf can like an Elf that doesn't drink! She is incredibly well
versed in the history of the Fortress, and the Maran - which impresses
him, but also makes him feel a bit dim. Although all the history lessons
in the world, can not be made into right action in a crucial moment.
A young lad named Zermon, has sought Balgrum's council, and seeks to become
a Squire. But his path is difficult, and though his heart seems to be in
the right place, and his actions seem to be sound, he has trouble answering
questions about his faith, and his reasons for seeking Squiredom with any
sort of depth. Balgrum likes the lad, and feels sorry his path has been
fraught with so much trouble, so he has vowed to walk the path with him of
self-discovery, and to aid him in the battle that seems to wage, over his
faith. In part, this is because he senses some of the same trials Mournagr
faced within this lad, and still feels as though he was partly responsible
for not providing Mournagr with better council. Zermon's troubles seem to
be related to his captivity in his youth, to Orcs. He was forced to eat
rotting and poisoned food, and kept in a cage for many years, his elven
intelligence, and smoothness of tongue, seem almost none existant as a
result. He expressed a desire to learn the dwarvish-tongue, and Balgrum
got him drunk in the Inn, and oblidged. Daphadee provided a Thror doll
to aid in his training, and Zermon had both Balgrum and Daphadee laughing
for hours. Balgrum agreed to make Zermon an honorary dwarf, and considers
Zermon one of his closest friends now.
A Vision had in youth, told as a Story

A youthful vision o' Past, Present, Future o' Thera, as seen by Balgrum
Brightbeard in his youth, and retold as story now. Dis' story be ah great
force o' motivation in mah life an be der reason ah chosen ter walk der path
ah walk.
Some time, long long ago, or perhaps it were today, or tommorow, or years
from now.
Lads an lasses from all races, be takin' sides o' Light an Darkness, and
Dwarf be fightin' Duergar, Elf be fightin' Dark-elf, Fire an' Storm giants
fightin' one another.. world be in ah state o' conflict.
Great battles bein' waged between Light an' Darkness.
Many folks wounded, an dyin' on der battlefields from both sides, wit' no
clear victor in sight.
In der midst o' der chaos, out o' der 'eavens came ah being so terrible, so
wicked, so vile dat light an dark seem awash amidst it' presence.
It be hard ter define der terrible force, as it be seen as nothin' but
darkness, pullin' surroundin color, an light inter it's midst.
Dis bein' care not for aura, or race, or life at all.
It be sowin' destruction equally amongst all livin' things
Chaos created upon der battlefield, an dwarf an duergar an elf and dark-elf
alike fell to it's wicked power.
Der divided forces o' Light an Dark were powerless against dis terrible
being.
Surely it would destroy all living things an leave dis world barren an cold
in it's wake.
Der remainin' leaders o' der forces o' Light an Dark upon der battlefield
realized der be no hope divided against such ah power, an came ter an
agreement that life be uniting folks o' all walks.
Only united as one, did der Races o' Thera stand ah chance o' continuin'
existence upon this world.

Dwarf an Duergar set aside grudges held fer longer than history know, As did
Elf and Dark-elf, an dem battled side ter side, back ter back against der
force o' wickedness dat eclipsed all other villainy bein' known ter men an'
women
An united, dem fought against der blackness, magi an warrior, battlerager an
nexun, imperial an fortress, outlander an tribunal.
Still der force o' wickedness were great, e'en against der combined might o'
all races an creeds o' Thera.
Many lads an lasses o' all walks fell ter der raw power o' death der bein'
wielded.
But as der battle raged, der forces united, discoverin' der power granted
them by unity.
Der power bestowed by simply bein' alive, by life itself.
Life does nah care o' aura, or race.
Life simply strives ter continue to live.
An live life did, der spirit o' life flowed through der united forces, an
where dust an ashes were made, seeds sprouted an flowers bloomed.
Beautiful tree's, and crooked black trees, an' all manner o' livin' things.
Vultures an eagles descended from der sky, tearin' at der blackness.
Der very land itself, der ancient land, der spirit o' der land - heaved, and
turned.
Life enclosed upon der blackness, tree an shrug writhin' about der bein',
creature an critter crawlin' upon der new branch an leaf.
An eventually, der blackness, were surrounded by nothin' but life, it's power
waned.
It began ter grow less black, its dim pitch beginnin' ter fade ter grey.
Der night contained by shrub an tree an creature an critter began ter change.
From between branch an leaf, ah soft glow bein' seen by der united forces.
Yellow, an pink, an red, an orange, der colors of der dawn begin ter pour
fourth from der place where once only darkness be.
Tree an branch an shrub an leaf begin ter unfurl around der once black place,
as flower blossom on vine, an sun rises in beautiful color from der place o'
great battle were only moments earlier.
An folks did realize in dat beautiful sunrise, that old grudges nah seem
important in comparison ter such ah threat ter life.
Dwarf an dark-elf seen tendin' to one another wounds on der battlfield, an
elf an Duergar help one another to dem feet.
An peace were made upon all o' Thera, in der wake o' dis great battle.
Der battle between light an dark nah won wit' Shokai's hammer, but wit' life
itself, sacred to both dark an' light.
Necessary for der very survival o' dis world.
Is nah won by Light, or Dark, but by Life an in Life, all folks did win.
