Role
Orphaned in Mortorn
Added Wed Dec 18 15:54:40 2024 at level 38:
Boots.
His earliest memory is the sound of metal-shod boots on the stone floors
of the mountain. Always rushing, it seemed to him. Odd that this should
stand out in his memories from that time, but who can say how the mind
works? And besides, he was but a small child.
Bognor knows the details of how he came to be in Mortorn at such a young
age, but more as a story told to him about someone else than as lived
experience. His father was a soldier. One of those who answered Ludan's
call when his recruiters visited Akan, which they did with some frequency.
If the war in Mortorn can be thought of as a fire, then the blood of
Akan's sons is the fuel that feeds that fire.
He knows less about his mother. There is a half-remembered feeling of
warmth and comfort, but little more than that. What he does know is that
she brought him with her to Mortorn to visit his father during a period of
time when his father was scheduled to be on leave, but the details of what
happened next are muddled. It seems there was an emergency that required
his mother's presence back in Akan, and the haste with which she would
need to travel precluded her bringing him with her. Her party was set
upon by an orc raiding party and destroyed.
His father fell in battle around the same time his mother lost her life on
the road to Akan, thus leaving Bognor an orphan child in a camp full of
soldiers who had neither the time nor the inclination to reuinte him with
whatever family might remain in Akan. His father had apparently been
much-beloved by his brothers in arms, who, in his honor, adopted Bognor as
a sort of unofficial mascot. While he had lost his actual father, Bognor
gained twenty adoptive fathers in his place.
The unit was usually deployed, however, and, as he was not (yet) capable
of joining them in the field, the majority of Bognor's time was spent with
various individuals in the rear camp: he was taught to read and write by
the priests of Kor, shown the use of arms by the guardsmen and learned to
farm mushrooms in the caverns. His most formative time was spent with
someone who wasn't part of Ludan's army: Eynwil, the elven. Perhaps out
of pity for his situation, she took it upon herself to instruct him
history, religion and the world outside Mortorn. Her influence on his
developing sense of right and wrong and on his views regarding the ethics
of war and combat cannot be overstated. Some dwarves view elvenkind with
suspicion if not outright hostility; Bognor will never be among them.
In that, and in so many other ways, he was always a bit of an odd duck
among the dwarves of Mortorn. In time, though, as he grew, and as his
training progressed, he, like so many others had done before him, donned
the plate, hefted his weapon, and marched off into the fray. It was there
that the trouble began.
The Cruelty of the Dimmed
Added Wed Dec 18 15:55:35 2024 at level 38:
It was cold this far down, but the steam warmed his face.
On his hands and knees, staring down the half-digested breakfast which now
sat in a stinking pool on the cave floor below him, Bognor took stock of
the scene around him. Two duergar corpses lay nearby with variying
degrees of physical trauma. One man's face was now concave, his eyeballs
having burst during the blow which took his life. His companion lay in
two pieces next to him, one arm having been cut clean off. Or perhaps it
was the arm of one of his kinsmen. It occurred to him, ruefully, that,
once separated from its owner's body, a duergar's arm looked very much
like the arm of a dwarf.
He could no longer hear any sounds of armed conflict. Given he was still
alive, this must mean they were victorious. He did hear moaning, though,
as was often the case after skirmishes such as this one. Either injured
dwarves or injured duergar; their pain sounded much the same. In this
case, thankfully, it happened to be injured duergar. Bognor stood to his
feet, wiped the bile from his lips with his shirt sleeve, and headed over
to what remained of his unit.
They were gathered around a duergar soldier. The man had been disarmed,
and his leg was bent at an unnatural angle just below the knee. His hand
was clutched at a wound in his side, but was only partially successful at
slowing the the escape of his life's blood. His breaths came labored, and
he glared at them with unmitigated hatred. Their rear camp scarce had the
resources to treat injured dwarves, much less prisoners of war, and so it
was typical in this situation to dispatch the fallen and be on their way.
Bognor hefted his sword and moved to put the soldier out of his misery.
A hand on his shoulder stopped him. It was their sergeant. Garlan was an
older man, and a veteran of many years. He had served with Bognor's
father many years ago, and was one of those who, with his passing, became
like a father to Bognor.
"Hold ye there, Bognor," Garlan growled.
"This'n here don't deserve a swifth death. Does he, boys?"
Shouts of agreement rose up from the survivors. They had lost many.
Garlan strode up to the soldier (who sneered in response) and slowly,
deliberately stepped down onto the man's ruined leg with an iron-shod
boot. At this, the man eyes went wild, and let out a shrieking howl that,
to this day, Bognor can't seem to forget. This lasted until the man ran
out of breath, at which point he simply continued to scream in silence
before passing out from the pain. Garlen ended him with a swift stroke.
The Call
Added Wed Dec 18 15:56:10 2024 at level 38:
He became aware of the call gradually, until all of a sudden it could no
longer be ignored. It had started that day in the depths when he
witnessed the cruelty of his sergenat and grew from there. The sense that
the men with whom he fought were not entirely in the right. The sense
that the war with the duergar had stolen something from them and made them
somehow less than what they "should" be. The realization of what so much
suffering and hatred can do to a man.
And so Bognor left Mortorn He was under no contract; Ludan's army was
fueled by zealous volunteers. He traveled first to Akan seeking perhaps
to connect with family, but there were none. Too much time had passed and
there were none there who remembered his mother or father. At Eynwil's
suggestion he sought out the guild of paladins there. He stayed with the
priests there for a while, seeking to better understand what he had been
through in Mortorn and what it all meant. In time he found peace, and
with it some clarity of purpose.
He would not not stop fighting. He would not even stop fighting the
duergar, he expected, though they would cease to be the sole focus of his
mission. What he would not do, however, was succumb to the hatred, blood
lust, and desire for vengeance that had claimed so many of his kinsmen,
dimming their light and resigning them to the ranks of the gray. No, he
would seek out those who fight with noble purpose and not out of a desire
for revenge. Who are held to the highest standard. He would seek out the
Fortress of Light.
Ideal to Person
Added Wed Dec 18 15:56:54 2024 at level 38:
Bognor has been on many adventures so far. He has taken the life of an
evil necromancer, and had his taken by one of the same. He has pledged
himself to the Fortress of Light, been found worthy, and made a Squire.
All this time he has dedicated himself merely to an ideal, but not to a
specific person. The ideal of a noble struggle; a holy war; and of
waging that war in a manner befitting both the Guild and the Brigade.
He has not wavered in this. Lately, however, he has felt drawn to one
deity in particular. Baerinika, the Jaguar in the Mist. It is not a name
familiar to his tongue. The priests in Mortorn typically prayed to Kor,
and those in Akan to the unnamed spirits of the mountain. But the words
spoken by her faithful do not lie, nor those recorded in the religious
texts kept within the various paladin's guilds. So he will seek her out,
and hope against hope that she will forgive the weakness he showed in
Mortorn. The wavering of his light, as it were, even if it did not dim.
Short Summary
Added Wed Dec 18 15:57:19 2024 at level 38:
Bognor is an orphan who grew up in Mortorn and was raised by a combination
of the Priests of Kor, dwarven soldiers, and Eynwil the elf. He served in
Ludan's army until witnessing his kinsmen commit what were essentially war
crimes. This prompted him to leave and kindled a religions calling, which
led him to the paladin's guild in Akan and ultimately to the Holy Brigade.
Despite everything he's seen he remains stubbornly cheerful. Due to his
long contact with Eynwil he does not share the antipathy some of his kind
do for elves, and is perhaps more well-read than the median dwarf of low
birth. Recently he has begun to associate the calling on his life with a
specific individual, Baerinika, whose blessing he now seeks.
There is some ambiguity about the fates of his parents as neither of their
bodies was ever recovered, his father having ostensibly fallen in combat
deep within Mortorn and his mother on the trail from Mortorn to Akan. In
all likelihood they are long dead, but when given to flights of fancy
Bognor sometimes wonders if either of them is actually alive somewhere,
perhaps being held captive. He considers these to be foolish thoughts,
even if they persist in coming to mind every so often.
Dedication
Added Wed Jan 15 10:04:59 2025 at level 51:
Bognor trudges through the marshy forests once again, his heavily armored
boots sinking into the loamy ground ever-so-slightly with each step. At
long last he reaches a stone altar and kneels there. Her holy place.
Removing his helm, he bends forward at the waist and touches his forehead
to the ground before straightening back up and beginning to recite his
prayers. The references to combat in the holy writings are unmistakeable,
but Bognor's heart feels at peace here. Hyllilde prays over him silently
in unison with his own prayers of petition, confession and thanks. She
does not speak, though, and regards him dispassionately as he stands and
turns to leave.
He will come again, and again. Of that he is certain. Bognor will lift
his voice in prayer as he has done so many times before, for he knows the
one to whom he prays is worthy of his devotion. Perhaps one day those
prayers will be answered, or perhaps they will not be. He cannot say. It
would give him great joy to see his Lady's face before reaching the end of
his days, but, if he does not, then his duties remain the same, and he
will not shirk them.
Peace and Joy
Added Sun Jan 19 15:39:52 2025 at level 51:
Baerinka has asked him to decide which ideals he will embody. Which to
choose? There are so many different ideal his order requires its members
to adhere to. Courage. Purity. Courtesy. Honesty. Faith.
Self-sacrifice. Which of these does he hold *most* sacred? He ponders
the question. He prays, and he fasts. And at last Bognor has his answer:
none of them. Certainly he will follow the code, as every paladin does
who takes his faith seriously, however none of them are what he believes
are *most* important.
He thinks back to his past, in Mortorn, and to the soldiers, his kinsmen,
at whose side he fought. As he does, he considers what they were missing,
in their inmost beings, that made it possible for them to be so cruel and
heartless. Eventually, two concepts crystallize in his mind: peace and
joy. These are what he will embody, even as he carries out the grim work
of the Brigade. Perhaps even more so *because* of the nature of his
crusade.
By "peace" he does not mean pacifism or the absence of martial conflict.
Far from it. Bognor will strive to be one who is at peace with himself,
and who, from out of that place of peace, when faced with pain, suffering
or adversity, does not despair, or fret, or rage, but rather rests in the
assurance of the righteousness and absolute necessity of his cause. Who
is able to fight, and die if need be, without regret, for he has made
peace with the sacrifice serving in the Brigade demands. Live or die, his
life is poured out for the good of the many, and he no longer fears to
let it go.
Joy. It is not just happiness or delight, but something deeper. It is a
deep and abiding contentment that transcends circumstance. Once can
experience joy even in the midst of great sorrow, and indeed it is
arguably in such situations that it is most vital. The life of a Maran is
one of sacrifice, but also of proximity to the darkest, most disturbing
creatures and beings that exist on this plane (and others). It is too
easy for a soldier, even a soldier of the Light, to become so focused on
the struggle that he forgets what it is his truly fighting *for*. The
simple joys of life become crowded out by the grim determination needed to
carry on the struggle, and, like any muscle that goes unused for too long,
their capacity to even experience joy is diminished. Better men and women
than Bognor have trod this path and, eventually, succumbed. He vows to
never be one of them.
Fortress Missive
Added Tue Feb 4 11:28:27 2025 at level 51:
Some time ago my lady Baerinika asked that I choose two or three ideals to
embody with respect to how I conduct myself and carry out my duties within
the Fortress. I thought long and hard about how I would answer her, for
there are many noble ideals one might choose to embody. Courage, faith,
purity, patience, compassion, etc. At long last I settled on two: peace
and joy. This missive is my attempt to define them in context and to
convince you of their importance. For all, but especially to those within
our walls.
It may seem strange for me, as a Maran and follower of Baerinika, to
choose "peace" as an ideal to embody. Let me be clear, however: the peace
I seek does not imply pacifism or contradict in any way the war we
currently wage. Rather, I seek peace within. Repenting of the sins of my
past and not being ruled by guilt or fear. Fully accepting the very real
sacrifices I have made (and will make) in service to the cause. At peace
with myself, I need not fear death, nor chase riches, nor seek revenge,
nor be ruled by memories of the wrongs done to me. I believe that only
from this place of "peace" can a Squire or Maran prosecute the war in the
manner he or she is called to do so.
Joy is what flows out of resting in this place of peace. Joy in carrying
out the day-to-day tasks of the struggle, but also finding joy in those
things which are greater still. Those to which we will one day return
once the battle is won and we lay down our weapons, or when we are called
home to the Azure Fields. In my reading of the histories, it seems that
many of those who have stumbled or fallen away did so because they lost
sight of these greater things and were focused solely on the struggle.
Having lost that perspective their hearts became hard, and they became
like those whom we fight against.
So what is one to do? I make some suggestions:
1. Take honest stock of what you have given up in order to serve and
ponder whether it was truly worth it. If you have any doubt, then pray and
fast until that doubt is resolved (one way or the other).
2. Remind yourself daily that our lives are like the morning mist: here
one moment and gone the next, and the physical things we carry are less
substantial still. Do not cling so tightly to either that you lose sight
of those things that truly matter.
3. If you find yourself tempted toward anger or despair, take heart! Lean
upon your brothers and sisters, for no man or woman is an island. It is
for this reason (among others) we are joined together in service.
4. Never lose sight of what are fighting *toward*. Envision the life you
will lead on that glorious day when we finally lay down our swords and the
Fortress sits empty, for it is no longer needed. Fix your mind's eye on
this vision and let it guide you as you strive agianst those who place it
out of reach.
Homecoming
Added Fri May 23 13:33:17 2025 at level 51:
The sound of mailed boots marching on stone floors. It pulls Bognor out
of his reverie as he kneels within the Altar Room. A sound he has heard
countless times over his centuries in the Fortress, but this time it
pricks at something in the back of his mind. Something barely remembered,
now existing only in that liminal space between conscious recollection and
emotional association. In any case, it is clear to him that his devotion
is over. He begins to stand and feels a twinge in his right knee.
Placing the business end of his weapon on the ground and gripping its
hilt, he uses it to assist himself as he rises from the ground. "That's
new," he thinks to himself, but even as the words for in his mind he sees
the lie of them; he is an old dwarf, and has been for some time.
Uttering a quick prayer to Baerinka, Bognor cloaks himself in her
Sanctuary and strikes out into the mountains. Having crossed them, turns
left onto the Shepherd's Row and heads toward Voralian City. After a
quick word with Dallantius in the guild, he again sets out, this time
heading toward the eastern gate. He slows his pace upon exiting the city,
pausing to savor the trek through the outlying villages. They are filled
with simple folk, much more to his liking than the sophisticates in the
city. Some of them salute him in greeting as he passes, a gesture he
cheerfully returns.
Leaving the villages he begins his climb into the mountains and heaves a
heavy sigh as he passes the path leading to that festering pit the
Grinning Skulls call home. Continuing north his mind travels back in time
to when he was young, and he thinks of his mother. With each turn of the
path he wonders to himself, "Was this where they ambushed her? Was this
where she died?" Recognizing the futility of such questions, he chooses
instead to focus on his memories of her, scant though they are. He
remembers warmth. Comfort. Acceptance. His mood is lifted.
Passing by Akan and continuing north he begins to encounter soldiers in
the service of Ludan's army. None of them were alive when he last called
Mortorn home, but they seem to recnogize him anyway, through reputation if
not direct contact. They nod to him and do not challenge him as they
might anyone else passing by their checkpoints. He grumbles to himself at
the preferential treatment, but also does not decline it, for he intends
to reach the mountain stronghold before nightfall.
This he does, uttering the pass phrase at the gates in order to be allowed
entry, just as the sun's last rays sink below the surrounding mountain
peaks. Once past the gates he turns left and heads toward the Inn, knowing
the way by heart. Entering, he walks down a specific hallway and pauses
before a specific door, needing to gather his thoughts before knocking.
Before he can finish, though, a musical voice sounds from within, "Welcome
home, Master Dwarf. By all means, do come in!"
By the Fireside
Added Fri May 23 13:35:18 2025 at level 51:
"Greetins to ye..." he begins, before cutting off mid-sentence. Clearing
his throat, he continues, "I greet you, Lady Eynwil. It has been...some
time."
"Indeed it has, Bognor. Indeed it has," she responds, with a hint of
sadness in her voice. Or perhaps he is only imagining that? It's hard to
tell with elves.
"I am pleased that you remember our diction lessons, but you should know
that you are free to speak however you like here, in this place..."
Bognor considers this. "I appreciate the offer, m'Lady, but it pleases me
to honor you in this way. Besides, I can certainly use the practice!"
She smiles at that, and he remembers how good it would make him feel, as a
child, when he saw that smile. It has the saem effect even now.
"Very well then," she says. "Will you at least remove your armor and join
me by the fire?"
He sets himself to it. Though it is a completely reasonable request, he
finds it surprisingly emotionally charged. It has been years since he was
last without armor for any length of time beyond what is necessary to
maintain hygiene and keep the pieces themselves in good condition.
Without the familiar weight of it on his shoulders he feels almost naked.
Though, at the same time, unencumbered in a way that extends beyond the
mere removal of physical mass.
He joins Eynwil by the fire, her crown glittering in the dim light thrown
by the flames there. She pours him a glass of wine, which he accepts, and
they speak of many things. They speak of things from his past: of the
time he spent as her pupil, of his time in service of Ludan, and of his
journey to the Fortress of Light. But, also, of things from the present:
the rise of the Empire, the apointment of a new Elder Prophet, the ebb and
flow of the conflict with the duergar in Mortorn. And, eventually, of the
future. They laugh. They sigh. They remember.
At long last there is a lull in the conversation, the bottle of wine empty
at their feet. The fire has died down and is little more than embers now.
The two of them stare into it for a long while, neither speaking, empty
wine glasses held loosely in their hands, each sensing the significance of
the moment. At last, Eynwil speaks.
A Choice

"You needn't put it back on, you know," she says, referring to his armor,
hanging on hooks by the door. "No one would fault you, and you would be
welcome here. You might spread your faith to others of your kin..."
He glances up at her, then beyond her to his things, and recalls the sense
of lightness he felt at removing them. He looks back at the fire and
ponders the thought for a long while, before finally answering. "You
tempt me, Lady, but I cannot." But, as he opens his mouth to explain
further, she interrupts him. "I know, Bognor," she says. "I knew before
even suggesting it. But now you know as well."
He smiles then, realizing that, even after all these years, Eywil still
had more to teach him. He is glad for her wisdom.
"Thank you, Lady. And thank you for this," waving his hand at the fire,
the two chairs, and the empty bottle. "If we do not meet again this side
of the Divide, then I will look for you in the Fields."
"And I you, Master Dwarf. And I you."
