Description
A blue-skinned mountain of muscle stands here, clad in gleaming armor.
His hair runs down his back in a neatly-coiffed ponytail, secured from
any danger of being a detriment to his combat prowess. The hair is
green, the color of Aryth Ocean seaweed, and reaches to the middle of
his shoulder blades.
His eyes are a pale blue, striking against the deeper blue of his skin.
Standing above average height even for his kind, this giant is striking
in his appearance. His movements are gentle and careful, however - making
him less intimidating than he might normally appear.
His armor and weaponry are kept clean and serviceable, though dents and
scratches show here and there. This gives the overall impression of one
who finds them to be useful tools but does not spend time obsessing over
them.

Bulonk Brightsun has always been large for his age and race. His size
has generally been an asset, though he has had to learn fine motor control
(for a giant) to avoid breaking things due to his massive frame.
Born into a family of sea farmers, Bulonk's strength and size were put to use
daily from a young age. Mostly hauling heavy loads, while more nimble family
members did the more precise tasks such as planting and picking.
Bulonk never felt satisfied with this peaceful existence. A dutiful son, he
stayed home to help long after he could have struck out on his own. Finally,
his father, realizing that Bulonk was not a farmer at heart, suggested that his
son move on from farming and do something that would satiate his spirit. Once
Bulonk was certain that his father truly did not need him, he gathered a party
of some of the local youths (one of them was barely 80!) and formed a plan of what
to do. They would explore a lair of Xvarts, south of the Aryth Ocean, that they had
heard of. Some of the group balked, saying it was too dangerous. Bulonk convinced
them, however. And soon, a party of 8 had marched toward the Xvarts. Feeling confident,
as Xvarts are so small - what harm could they truly pose?
As you can guess, the party was set upon immediately, and scattered. Some fled deeper
into the caves, while others scrambled to the surface. Bulonk was one that made it to
the surface, only to discover that three of his party were missing. Urging his companions
to follow him in a rescue attempt, Bulonk charged back in. Moments later he turned around
and realized that he was alone. The others wanted no part of any more of Bulonk's "Grand
Adventure."
Bulonk fought some, but mostly ran away from the various Xvart guard parties, desperately
trying to find his three compatriots. Find them he did - dead, atop one another, having
run themselves into a dead-end tunnel. With the Xvarts closing in, Bulonk feared he
might meet the same end.
It was not to be, however. As Bulonk backed up to the tunnel wall, Xvarts advancing warily,
a stout dwarf and a slender elf crashed into the Xvart guard party from behind. Hewing
about themselves with sword and dagger, the pair dispatched the Xvarts easily.
"Come, young one. Let us leave this wretched place. You were brave to try to rescue your friends,
but there is nothing to be done for them now."
Aftermath
Added Sat Nov 2 18:54:13 2019 at level 9:
Bulonk was safe, as were four of his companions. The walk back to their small
farming community was subdued, to put it mildly. Bulonk could feel the glares
of the others on his back. He wished he could shrink to the size of a gnome.
Worse was the reaction their party received upon entering the village. Parents of
three youths, looking for the faces of their progeny among the five survivors.
As the truth hit them, wails of anguish washed over Bulonk's ears.
Gently as possible, he pushed through the crowd to get inside his father's
home, shutting the door behind him in an attempt to block out the cries.
It was no use. Even if he were deaf, he'd still hear them.
A few days later, after the funerals had been seen to, Bulonk's father took him
aside. "My boy, I am proud of you. And I love you. But you will never be happy
here again. You know it, and I know it."
With that, he placed a small bag of coin in Bulonk's hand. "You take yourself to
Galadon. You know the way. You use that coin to get yourself enrolled in the Academy.
You've got a bright future ahead of you, my boy. Brighter than any Brightsun."
Bulonk waited until nightfall and then left his village behind. A miserable trek toward
Galadon commenced, but he arrived safely, coin intact, and enrolled within the Academy
as his father had recommended. As the clerk asked him "What class do you feel would suit
you best, young man?" Bulonk thought of the two who had saved him in those Xvart caves.
Thinking especially of the dwarf, whose sword had swung with a fervent zeal, Bulonk spoke.
"Paladin."
Summary
Added Sat Nov 2 19:06:36 2019 at level 9:
Bulonk seeks adventure - exploration, smiting evil, tempting fate by going places that
he probably shouldn't.
After his misadventure with the Xvart lair, however, he is very reticent to travel with
others, specifically to especially dangerous areas. This will likely become a problem
he will have to deal with at some point in his life, as he hopes to become a follower
of Korsgaard.
While a Pathfinder can, of course, find a path alone, it is likely that Bulonk will need
to find a way to come to grips with his past and move on, eventually becoming a guide to
others in the ways of adventure.
His encounter with the dwarf and elf not only convinced him to join the Paladin guild, but
also to seek entrance into the Fortress. Upon learning about it within the Academy, he
realized that the pair that saved him were almost certainly among their ranks.
He believes that the Strong should protect the weak, and feels that Strength of
arm and strength of character go hand-in-hand.
