Description

At first glance he appears to be an oddly shaped formation of rock mud and vegetation approximately three feet in height and quite stout. On closer inspection you see a deeply weather lined face with beady black eyes peering out from behind what appears to be its own ecosystem. Occasionally small insects make the sojourn from his beard across his craggy flesh to his bushy eyebrows without bother or interruption of this beings actions or speech. Patches of his flesh are covered with what appears to be some form of fungus. Thick coarse grey hair is matted and shaped into a mass that has various nests built into it. Most of his small frame is concealed by his earthen encrusted cloak and clothing, small heavily calloused hands occasionally emerge.

Burgolt was born into an average gnomish home, nothing notable about him nor
his family. Life was safe, comfortable and if nothing else slightly boring.
Slightly doughy and weak, even for a gnome, Burgolt was rarely left to wander
and explore his own interests while growing up. Instead, he was to spend much
time in his parents grocery.

Introduction to Thar-Eris

One day while still a youth Burgolt slipped away from his parents watchful
eye into the nearby forest. There he bore witness to the finish of a hunt. A
pack of wolves was so focused on taking down their prey Burgolt and his
gaping mouth went unnoticed. Tenants of fair play, respecting others right to
existence and other views he had been raised with were all suddenly
obliterated as the injured doe was torn apart while still alive. This had
nothing to do with fair, this was primal, this was not good nor bad, it
simply was reality and Burgolt realized he was a part of it, not merely an
observer.

This was Burgolts first glimpse into Thar-Eris, an insight that would
eventually lead to the goal of simply existing within her currents. Embracing
the chaos of life rather than trying to mitigate it as he had been taught his
entire life. To provide zero resistance to her energies is to live in perfect
harmony and balance with Thar-Eris.

Death

During the years spent meditating on how to embrace the balance of Thar-Eris,
death was a recurring point of thought. No matter the starting point or
subject for meditation the ultimate conclusion was the void. It was through
these meditations Death revealed itself to Burgolt as the one experience all
share regardless of our path in life, it is how he understands and relates to
others.

Philosophical thoughts such as this were all fine and good for Burgolt but he
understood that he was nothing more than a succulent morsel of tasty gnome
meat in such a reality, he had hoped to be more. 

The only aggression he had ever known growing up was the passive aggression,
the tone that undercut the calm measured conversations that he had spent
years listening to from his parents. This parental trait would guide his
decisions within the study of shapeshifting to focus solely on defense. He
had learned well, both his parents demonstrated while in a defensive position
there can still be hidden barbs making assault regrettable.

Feeling incredibly blessed with the beasts he has learned Burgolts goal is
to be a strong force for Thar-Eris against those that would impede her
return.

Journal entry 1

Added Sun Nov 5 14:13:14 2023 at level 51:

Again, I have awoken unsure if I am waking from a dream or if I am waking
within a dream. Even when I suspect I am awake my meditations are given to
significant losses of time. I will record my thoughts while in this twilight
of consciousness in hopes to reflect on them later. 

Death has become as familiar to me as my own shadow. At first, I did not
recognize the greater blessings granted to me with each of deaths visits.
Thankfully the hubris of a youths understanding of death has been balanced
with humility over time. I expected death but I had never recognized it as a
path to enlightenment.

Time, ever-present predator the purveyor of death relentlessly lurks. Killing
blows hewn away burdensome bits of self, as a wolf pack culls a heard leaving
only what is strong. Each pruning a step closer to fully embracing cycle of
Thar-Eris.
