What has come Before

What has come Before.
My story is a simple one. On some levels I wonder at my reticence to tell it,
yet I come back to the fear of judgement. Or perhaps it is the fear of
showing weakness. Yet we must embrace fear. It is natural, an instinct, but
in allowing yourself to have fears without letting them control you, there
you can find strength.
For thousands of years, my clan-family has been charged with guarding an
ancient temple of Nordewyn. It was an isolated, forgotten place, and I spent
most of my days hunting or standing vigil. Training with the blades was my
main form of creative outlet, my main form of recreation, and I relished it.
I am competitive by nature, and I focused my extra energies into becoming
better, stronger, faster than my fellows. My sister, of all our family,
seemed most kindred, and she was my main training partner.
To this day, I do not know how word of our quiet little corner of the world
got out. Whereas we might get one outside visitor a year, and those often
fellow woodland elves, suddenly it seemed we would have monthly, if not
bi-weekly visitors. And most of these were wizards, or those sent on their
behalf.
I have no great tale of murder or blood. A high elf came maigcally, forsaking
the normally difficult traverses that so isolated us. I found it to be
cheapening, something somehow offensive to the land, to me. Part of the
mystique of the temple was the physical perils is presented, and the strength
it demanded from any would-be supplicants.
He was charming, not offensive or intending plunder of the temples secrets,
as had many of his predecessors. Simply to study and learn, he said. And he
did not lie. Yet what I found so distasteful, my sister found mesmerizing.
Strength of mind is strength to, Cain, she told me. While I could almost
believe such, I feel that such physical shortcuts produce bad habbits that
blunt strength, and I could not aprove.
She left with him to explore a different life. The explorers still came, but
they petered off, evidently finding the stores of power were simply stories.
But I had discontent that ran deep. In the past I had simply looked down upon
magic as a waste of time, a hobby for the snooty high elves. Now I see it as
a shackle, a subversive force, something sinister that can lead men away from
finding their true and inner strength.

As I pen this, I reflect on what is now, and not the before of my life. The
memories of the Temple days will always be with me, as is the way of elves.
But were we to keep our handful of centuries ever present in our minds,
surely we would grow distracted. Perhaps that is the folly of the high elves.
Yet that is not here or there. I have found my Hut, and I have reached the
pinnacle of the guild. Lifetime achievements for some, yet they feel but the
steps of a youth on his first hunt. My first encounter with Thror felt like
an awakening of sorts. I did not have to scramble, improvise or invent, and
yet I found my answers to be at least somewhat...akin to what the Noldarian
smith sought.
So the task is set before me. Slay the chosen of Rayihn, this distant cousin
of mine. It is a worthy challenge. I wonder, at times, if I am proving my
strength by slaying those I believe are weaker for having chosen the arcane
path. But this is heartening, this is validation.
I am but one man. And I will fail, yet I will persevere and grow. The lords
above know if this will lead to strength, or if it makes me strong. I do not
know, yet I can but try.
Life, Years, Growth.
Added Sun Oct 7 13:53:16 2012 at level 51:
The flow of the years passing before me often seems a river, and I a stone. I
am far from the only elf to remark on this - those of us who spend time
amongst the more....mortal races see friends, foes, mentors, lovers - all
succumb to the years, while we remain. And yet the river still shapes the
stone, implacable though it may seem.
So it feels with me. I have earned the mark of the Noldar, and yet I find my
mantle as apprentice to be accurate. The path I walk is of hardship, and it
has taught me a great deal. Competing in the Rites of war was an exhilarating
experience, even for me. I say that with full acknowledgment that the years I
carry have made me stoic. So too was it humbling to not be considered for the
test of wits, for I have always considered myself a more cerebral warrior.
And yet it did not anger me - it is simply the next mountain which I can
scale.
I often wonder at how I am perceived amongst my brethren. I do not journey
forth as much as I would like, as I often journey back to the deepwilds of my
birth. I worry that our skirmishes in the war against magic is too focused on
the civilized realms of Thera, and so I sojourn back to to the temple and
other far flung places to keep vigil. Yet it means that I am not as visible
in the Village as I would prefer. I only hope to act as an example when I do
sally forth. If I can inspire another of the Village to embrace their
Strength and do the village proud, I am content.
Hearing the crushing voice of Knacnar in my head was humbling. That I might
learn from this hulking smith is exciting, and I must steel myself for what
is to come. He demanded...meat, from the followers of the Goddess. And so I
come again, with the skin of Her chosen. The last time I brought such a hide,
my lord gave me a chance, and so I think it a fitting way to continue my
smith training.
Renewd Strength, and Hope
Added Sat Dec 8 12:45:51 2012 at level 51:
How quickly the years pass, even for an elf. How difficult it has been for me
to pen my continuing tale, for even I find these last five hundred years
incredible. I came away from the temple, out of the deepwilds, with a bitter
heart. It was never out of revenge for losing my sister to a path I
disapproved of.
It was that there was something so alluring, so magnetic that it would draw
souls to it like a moth to flame. Something that forsook strength of body,
strength of skill. And I have spent five hundred years of life trying to
expose the dangers of such a choice.
Convincing a society to give up what is so prevalent, so available seems, at
times, like asking a dwarf to give up his ale. And I very much have come to
believe that I could not affect change without commanding respect. I would
have sought the path of hardship, the path of the Anvil, even if I did not
wish to affect change on this life we share. And yet, it has made me
sharper, more solid, more true to myself.
I have hoped to live by example, even if the stubborn soul of the mountain
born does not appeal to all, my dedication to this life, this hardship, I can
only hope has swayed even one soul. Years, decades even, have passed without
thinking I have had any effect. Even being named drillmaster, becoming smith,
while marks of great pride for me - they do not prove I have changed this
world atall, and thus it has been difficult to continue this tale.
And yet, this day, I have reason for hope. And how it must rankle both my
ancestors and the kin of the mountain I have spent so much time among that I
find hope in a young goblin. And yet the earnestness of his words and
desires, listening to - and even seeing - the realization of the wizards
misplace in life was so very heartning.
And so I find the small things to gain strength from. I look for new blood
for the Huts, and I seek to instill upon them some of my values. I believe
you must comport yourself as a man worthy of respect, of one to leave an
impression on friend and foe alike, to truly make progress in this war. And
thus I teach the youth to command respect and leave an impression. And
perhaps, in doing so, I will gain some of the shaping I seek to do.
Commandership, Wisdom, Perspective
Added Sat Dec 29 11:59:53 2012 at level 51:
I near six hundred, and yet I do not feel the age. It is the way of elvenkind
who chose a life among the other races to see friends come and go, indeed
experience multiple lifetimes of the shorter-lived kind, and I am no
exception. So many friends have come and gone from my life, and yet I knew
full well this would happen, given my choices, and thus I cannot complain.
Though I must admit to wishing that some of my closer brethren in the war had
fought later into life instead of retiring or worse.
Yet I cannot control what others do - I have come to believe we must embrace
the limitations of our powers to truly learn to understand one another.Once
I embraced that I can only be an example, a leading voice, a confidant - I
believe I took the proverbial next step, as it were. I can make myself as
mentally and physically strong as I possibly can, and yet at the best that
will give an example of what to strive for in those I would guide. I do not
find this to be disheartening by any means, only another in a line of
challenges I have sought and embraced. I may not have as much success as I
wish, and yet the only way to fail is to not attempt in the first place.
Many ask why I chose the duergar as my Drillmaster, and why I do not end the
Fortress war. Surely those things go hand in hand, the whispers say. I chose
Arratok because I found kinship with his tale of loss, hardship and rebirth.
I am Noldar, and though I do not expect all who seek the huts to seek such a
path of adversity, I think one like Arratok has much to teach. He who shuns
any religious aspirations, who has been torn, bloodied, and had to fight
uphill to even have a chance at a hut? A man to come through that and
preserve - that is who I believe can best influence the brethren.
And this war, ah, how I fear it will define my time as Commander. I do not
hate the Fortress, indeed I have a deep respect, if not kinship for, the
Light. And yet I will not bend knee. This war, regardless of how our foes see
it, was declared by Tia, and she had every right in her wearying bones to do
so. The terms have not been met. Insults have flown at me, men have died, but
we have not been given what we sought. I will not have our foes thinking they
can simply tire the Village, simply ask for a cessation of hostilities, and
we will give in, lay down our arms, proclaim You are correct, this war is
difficult on us both. Let us stop. I am Noldar, I will not bend knee - not
only would this go against my entire core being, but it would be an insult to
all those Villagers who have come before us. To Glaunduin and the pact he
strove for, to Redik and the Inquisition.

Commandership, Wisdom, Perspective (contd)

(continued)
I will not spit on what they have fought for. As I threw in the Marshals
face (with such vitriol I surprised even myself), this Village has stood
longer than the Fortress, longer than the Chasm, Longer than the Rift, longer
than this Palace, and it will not give in to the face of adversity. For me to
end this war, Oshui must bend knee or die. Else I will die and another will
come forth, and I am serene in my convictions in this matter.
Some small voice warned me not to get complacent as Commander. That voice
whispered its doubts, that I had reached my biggest challenge. Those voices
have vanished. This is my path, and I walk it gladly, but there is no lack of
hardship to continue my personal honing. And perhaps the anvil that guides my
soul can leave some small mark on this world, but that remains to be seen.
