Description

Standing at five feet three inches, Calem is an average height for a woman. Her pasty complexion, fair hair, and pale grey eyes mark her as hailing from the northwestern reaches of the main continent. Her posture is upright, as if she has habitually sought to assert her maximum height all her life, but it is so instinctual that it does not seem to stem from self-consciousness. Her shoulders are rounded and her overall physique is thin and pear-shaped. Her hair is thinning from age, streaked with grey, and poorly-maintained in a shaggy bob that falls to her neck. Her eyes are grey and unemotive, somewhat set too close together, throwing off the harmony of her facial proportions. Her jawline is narrow and receding, giving her a pronounced overbite. Despite her unimpressive appearance, Calem's movements are quick and confident, and something about that calm, intense gaze marks this unassuming old woman as not simply a trifle to be dismissed.

Role

Summarized Backstory

Added Sat Jun 13 09:41:22 2026 at level 18:
Author's note: This is a summary of Calem's backstory. I will fill in the
actual story at a later point.

Calem was born and raised in the Northern Plains. As a young lad he played
near the foothills on the northern edge of the plains. One day, he journeyed
too far into a box canyon and found himself in a mist-filled forest, and was
unable to navigate his way back again. For hours he walked, until suddenly
he stumbled out of the forest. He met a strange old lady, who offered to
guide him out if he would accept a Divination session with her tarot deck.

Three cards were drawn. The deck mysteriously produced The World, and two
copies of Death. The World signifies finality and completeness, which lent
extra weight to the following two cards. Death signifies transformation and
endings, the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. Seeing the
impossible result of two Death cards, the old lady believed Calem to be of
special significance. Not only did he draw entirely from the Major Arcana
cards, which was already somewhat rare, he had produced two copies of Death
from a deck with only one copy of Death. She was spooked, and accused him of
bringing a curse upon her. Instead of freeing Calem, she imprisoned him.

Calem was imprisoned for four years, shackled to his room, and served as a
subject of magical experimentation and investigation for the old lady who
was a witch of some prowess. But over those years he watched and learned,
from his captor herself, who was a shapeshifter. Eventually he figured enough
shapeshifting to slip his bonds and escape during a time when she was out.
With magically-enhanced eyes and a collection of items he took from the
witch's workshop, he figured out the misty forest maze and left.

As Death signified the ending of a chapter and the beginning of a new one, so
too did Calem suffer two Deaths. His first Death ended his carefree life as a
farm boy of the Northern Plains and started a life as a captive. His second
Death ended his captivity and began his freedom. Heeding the significance of
the twin Deaths, Calem did not return to his home and his family, but quietly
travelled far south to Galadon to join the Academy of adventurers.

Character Traits

Added Sat Jun 13 09:41:54 2026 at level 18:
Calem is whimsical, creative, and values his autonomy most of all. He will
be fairly unpredictable in conversation and mood. He will greatly resent
anyone who tries to dictate his behaviour.

Calem is magically touched by the concept and sphere of Death. He embodies
Death in the tarot-reading sense, of endings and new beginnings, but he also
embodies Death in the straightforward sense. He has a fascination with Death,
particularly in causing and observing it. He is also pretty unbothered by
dying. Though he will not seek to die, he is unlikely to complain or feel
unhappy about his own death.

Calem has no respect for the laws of the Spire. If he abides and does not
commit a crime, it is largely out of self-preservation.

Calem has had no formal education beyond the age of twelve, and no formal
magical education at all. He learned instinctually some basics of magic and
shapeshifting from observing his captor who was such a mage. He is not
particularly fond of theoretical concepts or academia, unlike many mages.

Calem has no dietary restrictions, he is happy to eat even the freshly-
hewn limbs of other humans. Death is good, meat from Death is good.

Calem has a somewhat informal speech pattern, but his vocabulary is not
limited. He is still intelligent, despite his lack of formal education.

Goals

Added Sat Jun 13 09:42:10 2026 at level 18:
Honestly, Calem has no goals in particular. He is a creature of whimsy and
lives in the moment. He did not step foot into the Academy with any goal
other than to be an adventurer, and he did not step out of the Academy with
any grand goals other than to do stuff, make deaths, and grow bigger.

He is quite likely to be unaffiliated with any cabal. Of the cabals, the
only ones he would have any tolerance for would be Scion and Outlander. He
will be enemies to the Fortress and the Village. He will dislike the
Tribunal and Empire.

Formative Relationships

Added Tue Jun 16 07:28:26 2026 at level 37:
One thing Calem learned early on. There sure are a lot of Tribunals. And
none of them asked him to join the Spire or anything like that. They seemed
pretty content to join him in travel and not ask anything of him. This gave
him a bit of a better appraisal for Tribunals, the people, not the
organization itself. Yllalaeas seems capable and not a bad sort.

Calem has heard of a great number of Outlanders but has never actually
encountered one. He did encounter a strange and interesting lizard-shaped
mage called Fletussh, who avowed a hatred against the Outlanders because
they hunted necromancers. He also claimed that as a saurian he could see
through their deceptions and spot them in the wilds. Fletussh called himself
a hunter of Outlanders, which pleased a young Tribunal in the group.

Calem spotted an elder shapechanger called Dondonxa while wandering in the
desert of Araile. Fear and awe kept him from reaching out. This was one of
the legendary archmagi of the Shapeshifters' guild! She was wearing a
veritable hoard on her person, and took the form of a mighty golden eagle.
Calem swore he would one day be strong enough to consider her as a peer.

Calem met an elder transmuter called Caserque, who spoke at length with Calem
and proposed a contract of sorts. Calem desired the formal magical education
he did not manage to get as a youth, and Caserque agreed to take him on as a
young apprentice. He drafted up a long contract with lots of precise
terminology, which Calem agreed to. This may be the start of a long and
fruitful relationship with a proper magical Master.

Reading a little more about the cabals, Calem feels he does not mind so much
those members of Outlander, Scion, or Herald. And in practice, having met
Tribunals, he does not dislike their individual members too. There is some
solidarity amongst mages of a red aura, hunted by the Fortress and Village.

Early Experiences

Added Tue Jun 16 07:33:42 2026 at level 37:
Two Deaths. Just as foretold, in quick succession Calem suffered two deaths.
First was an accident in the Vale of Arendyl, the second was another unwise
decision in the Plains of Arendyl. Calem felt... acceptance. Death was not
to be unwisely sought out, but not to be suffered with wailing despond.

He has been feeling a bit moody, but not about dying. About the time it
would take to earn his pinnacle. The very thought brings him into a funk
sometimes, and our whimsical young man just blurts out his feelings to his
teammates, who generally take it with patience. They're not so bad really,
the so-called wicked who bear a red aura. Calem felt some sense of sympathy
or solidarity amongst them.

Calem was slain abruptly by a berserking villager who mysteriously appeared
from the shadows to backstab him and then deliver death blows. He did not
need much of a reason to decide Jergudoak needed to die, and so now has
decided he will kill Jergudoak. Likewise, Drael slew him by striking by
surprise from the shadows as well, which gives Calem another reason to
dislike the Empire, since Drael was an Imperial Shadow.

Backstory Chapter One, Lost in the Woods

Added Mon Jun 22 08:30:36 2026 at level 43:
Calem and Gaile were fast friends in the way only twelve-year-old boys could
be. Tow-headed and dusty-grey from all the dirt they rolled in, they
scrambled over plain, knoll, and scree, hooting as they played, hooting as
they fought on occasion.

They had a vice, a typical twelve year old's vice. They dared each other to
do stunts, stunts that grew ever more daring as each boy took up his mate's
challenge. So it was on a balmy Day of Deception that Gaile came up with his
latest: Calem, I dare you to go into the Misty Forest past the Box Canyon!

Calem, with all the brimming self-confidence of youth, agreed. So off he
went, trepidation and determination beating in equal measure in his heart.

This was not so bad, thought Calem, as he took his first twenty steps into
the misty forest. It was quiet, perfectly quiet. Nothing dangerous threatened
to hurt him here. He spotted a clump of mushrooms of a familiar variety, and
collected them. Proof of his exploits. That will show Gaile, he thought.

With his loot in hand, Calem turned back whence he came. He took twenty paces
back, or so he thought. Twenty paces his feet made, but all around him the
cool wet mist swirled, shrouding the tall dense trees of the forest in grey
gloom. That must have been just a mistake, thought Calem, but his heart was
beating faster.

Another twenty steps. And then another forty. Then, panic set in. Calem
shivered in the cold, determined not to cry out for help. Surely he could
figure it out, it was only a little maze.

Nervous determination faded away into terror as the crepuscular sunlight
filtering through the trees waned into twilight. Humans cannot see in the
dark, and Calem was only a little human boy. The chill of the evening drew
close about him like impending doom. He cried out plaintively, tentatively at
first. Eventually, cold and fear drove him to hysterical screaming.

The earth and woods, silent and damp, absorbed his screams with nary an echo.
Calem wept as he gave up hope of rescue. He burrowed into the soil, seeking
warmth and protection from the chilling misty breeze. Sleep overtook him as
his voice grew hoarse from crying out. The bone-chilling cold would bring
death, this much was certain.

Backstory Chapter Two, The Fortune Teller

Added Mon Jun 22 08:32:00 2026 at level 43:
Calem was sure he had died, and was in the Azure Fields, and a matronly old
crone with the kindest eyes gazed down at him with divine grace and warmth.

Come now boy, you'll catch your death out here in the cold night, crooned
the crone. Calem was sure he had never seen a creature more beautiful.

With surprising vigour the crone wrapped a blanket about him and walked him
away, sure steps following a trail visible only to her. In just a hundred
paces they were clear of the misty forest. How? Calem must have taken many
thousands of steps to no avail. He was too cold, too numb to ponder this.

Shortly after, Calem found himself in a warm cabin with a burning hearth,
relieved after that close brush with death. 'What do I owe you, lady, for
saving my life?'

'Nothing but a reading', twinkled the crone, pulling out a battered old deck
of cards. 'Your soul's sincerity will power the truth of this divination,
after all, you've just had a near-death experience... in my experience, the
touch of death brings truth and clarity. But first, have a hot drink and
some bread, then we will read your destiny.'

A tarot reading. The first card fell upon the table. The World, of the Major
Arcana. 'Finality, completeness! This is a weighty reading. I knew it, I knew
we would find some exceptional divination today! The World lends weight to
today's divination, young one. Let us pay close attention to the next draws.'

The second card was Death, drawn in the traditional hooded reaper style with
a bone-white skull for a face. 'Fear not child, Death is but a signifier of
endings and beginnings... a major transition in your life. Not necessarily
death of the body or soul. I think it unlikely, anyway, since you've just
escaped death today!'

The wizened crone's fingers trembled as she slipped the third card out of
the worn deck of cards. Death again. The crone froze, unblinking,
expressionless. But her eyes tightened and her lips pressed tightly into a
line. Speechless she sat for a minute, as the twin reapers gazed up at her in
mockery of her arcane ritual.

'No, no, impossible! There is only one Death card in the deck! This is a
curse, not a reading! What doom have you brought to me? What doom will you
bring to me? I will know, I must know! You cannot leave, boy, until I find
the meaning of your curse! I won't allow you to doom me like this!'

Backstory Chapter Three, Imprisonment and Escape

Added Mon Jun 22 08:32:33 2026 at level 43:
Calem bolted for the door, of course he did, but in a flash the old crone
vanished and a great grizzled wolf knocked him down before he could even
touch the door. The stench of its fearsome maw, bristling with teeth the
size of knives, shocked the poor boy into a paralyzed state.

The shapeshifting crone dragged the boy down into a cellar, and shackled him
firmly. And there he would pass his teenage years, and grow from boy to man
in a dark and seldom-lit cellar-laboratory of a crazed magician.

The first few weeks were utter terror. Experiments were done upon him, some
intrusive and painful, some completely non-physical. At different points
Calem wished he had died. Some of the experiments intruded into his very
mind, rather than his body, and somehow that was even worse. His screams
echoed loudly in this cellar of bare rock and hard wood, but his discomfort
only seemed to motivate his captor into intensifying her experiments.

Two years later the witch was out of ideas. The experiments ceased, but she
would not let him go. He was cursed, she said, and one day she would figure
out how to find out his secret. In the meantime he must remain perpetually
her prisoner, until such time as she could figure out his secret.

He languished and withered away physically, denied liberty and exercise. The
food was of a good quality, and the straw he slept on he had grown used to,
but the witch cared not for his physical or mental development. All he could
do was watch, chained to the wall. Watching and listening as she buried
herself obsessively in whatever arcane matter interested her that day.

The lupine metamorph was obsessed with her study, and eventually paid so
little attention to him he might as well have been a fixture upon the wall.
But clever Calem was, watching and learning with a keen mind. Though he had
no education of any sort, repeated observations and quiet experimentation
slowly taught him the basics of Magic.

First he learned to detect magic, to see its traces as she worked. Then, he
learned those minor cantrips that were simple to do. A useful cantrip was
sharpen his vision to work even in utter darkness. These two tricks enabled
him to observe much better than before, and before long, unbeknownst to the
crone, she had acquired a silent apprentice in Magic.

When Calem was sixteen, he had finally learned how to perform a partial
shift. Adapting the spell to shift his hands and feet out of the shackles
took some weeks of improvisation, but eventually he managed it. During one
of the crone's slumbers Calem slipped his bonds and ran. He grabbed a bunch
of possibly-useful devices from her workbench and stuffed them into a sack,
and left the prison as quietly as he could.

Backstory Chapter Three: Freedom

Added Mon Jun 22 08:33:09 2026 at level 43:
Back in the misted forest, sixteen years old and on the cusp of manhood. He
could scarce remember the innocent boy that first took his fateful steps
into the mists. That Calem might as well be dead. In his place was a new
Calem, reborn and with a completely different direction. With his newfound
feline vision he could see well in the dark. He left various trinkets in
specific locations in the misty forest, and using them as landmarks, he was
able to painstakingly figure out a path out of the forest.

The first time he managed to find an exit that was not leading back to his
prison, a heavily-armed elven guard stopped him and told him he was too
young to face the danger ahead. A magic dome seemed to rise into the air,
and tenebrous shapes twisted and swirled within. He felt terror and a
knowledge of certain doom if he went in that direction, and turned back.

A day later he managed to find the exit he was looking for. The box canyon.
Freedom at last! But should he return to his family? Might they have
written him off as dead? What about Gaile? Was he dead to Gaile too?

He felt oddly light and empty as he considered those questions. He pondered,
and sat in introspection for an hour.

A sudden feeling of calm certainty came over Calem at that moment. He knew
what to do.

Calem was dead.

Calem would leave the Northern Plains and find another life as another
Calem, elsewhere.

He stopped by a grand Inn upon East Sumner's Road, his first civilized
resting point. There, he heard adventurers talking. Their tales seemed
completely far-fetched to him, but fascinating nonetheless. They spoke of
places on the other side of Thera, people of God-like power, and actual Gods
themselves. Here was a world, strange and interesting, and Calem would join
that world.

Before long, he found himself in the Shapeshifters' guild in Galadon and the
Academy. Though he had no formal education, the Shapeshifters' guild is
remarkably forgiving of such, since many of its members operate by instinct
rather than theoretically-founded Magic. Calem is now an adventurer.

Vengeance

Added Mon Jun 22 08:34:53 2026 at level 43:
Vengeance is a topic that Calem dwells on these days. He has grown in power
and has assumed the awe-inspiring form of a great grizzly bear.

During the long climb to power, Calem was slain by an Imperial assassin
called Drael. Drael tripped and threw him in Ayr Trinil, and ended his life
in a stunningly short time. Calem took his loss silently, even endured the
looting of all of his coins and most of his potions.

In the interim after that embarrassing loss, Calem experienced a lot. He
met his mentor Caserque, and both mentor and student are finding that they
resemble each other a lot. Including their particular propensity for
effective violence. Calem reminded Caserque of his blood-soaked early years
as a young mage when he slew many adventurers.

Young and underestimated, Calem found the means to turn the tables on many
foes who expected an easy fight. He slew Maran at their pinnacle, largely
because they underestimated his being at a far lower guild title.

Nameless and unassuming, Calem's ruthless instinct was not yet well known.
This suited him fine. Obscurity was a weapon to a predator.

One day, Caserque sought Calem's assistance in Lower Cragstone. Calem made
his way there via Galadon under a hundred curious eyes. Amongst those eyes,
was Drael's. Drael followed him into Lower Cragstone. Then, Drael said
dismissively, that he had no interest in Calem's life. And thus he was not
hidden.

Calem rushed out of the city gates, assumed his grizzly bear, and hastened
himself magically. Fang and claw sent the surprised assassin running for a
place he could recall, but the great hulking grizzly came charging up the
city gates, and with a mighty rear, sent his thick, deadly claws crashing
down upon the flimsy assassin in a lethal rake.

Calem felt a rush. Drael was one of the two names he swore revenge upon.
And soon in his ears came a stream of drivel, from Drael whose pride was
wounded. Calem did not care.

Drael called him a basic little beast. Calem said, 'Rawr!'

And with this, Calem's thoughts run a little further to his origins. An old
crone once imprisoned him, and he will find his vengeance against her.

The Dancing Bear Plot

Added Mon Jun 22 08:38:50 2026 at level 43:
Calem took the path through the misty forest again. This time, as a mighty
shapeshifter, he felt no fear. He had trodden most of Thera unafraid, and
the forest now held no more fear for him.

As a nimble bird called the shikra, he flew between the trees and found the
cliff that marked the path to his old prison. Adventurers know well a crone
who takes the form of an alligator, who sometimes yields a sleek black rod.
Calem took a look, but immediately knew this was not his erstwhile captor.
This was another crone, also a shapeshifter, one of a different form.

He wandered off the beaten trail. Eventually, after searching, he found the
cabin which once served as his prison for four years.

It was empty. Most of the crone's belongings were taken away with her, but
not all. Combing through the cabin slowly, reading notes and journals, he
figured out eventually that she must have joined a wandering troupe that
entertained Therans across the Dairein Settlement, Northern Plains,
Tir-Talath, and Voralia.

In his lithe shikra form he flew and quickly located where those tents were
set up, and spent some days observing the troupe as they worked.

The crone, for her part, was working as a fortune teller. She had since
despaired of her ability to perform true divination, and now used her old
talent to perform cheap tricks in exchange for coins.

Calem wanted her dead. It would be quite simple to use his wands, and swoop
upon the crone as a grizzly bear and tear out the throat of her wolf form.
But that death would make her a bit of a martyr amongst the community of
circus performers. Calem wanted a more ignoble end to her, not a murder which
would grant her sympathy. No, he wanted it to look like an accident wherein
she did something monumentally stupid.

For that, Calem hatched a plot.

One of the circus acts was animal taming. Amongst the exotic animals there
were lions and bears. Two of the bears were even grizzly bears that looked
very much like Calem in his grizzly bear form. Calem is going to become a
circus bear.

But first, in order to do that, he needed to learn how to dance as a bear.

Lucky Inspiration

Added Mon Jul 6 09:21:51 2026 at level 51:
One fateful day, Whiysdan was having a party. In Galadon. Drunk and loud.
Calem the mad mage was drawn to this display of divine whimsy. An enormous
amount of firebreather ensued, and during the drunken excess with the Lord
of Luck and the young paladin Jorek, somehow Calem felt a touch of divine
inspiration leading him to newfound experiences. With that little touch, he
was suddenly inspired to move more expressively in his grizzly form.

And so the bear danced. It was tricky at first, and took a lot of practice
before he became confident with the moves. Before long Calem the Bear was
able to rear up on his hindpaws, wave, sway from side to side, and roll
forward. With this basic repertoire he would be able to pass the audition.
Then, all that remained was to find someone who would act as a trainer. In
reality, of course, Calem did not need training to do the tricks. They were
simple tricks, but his competition was... actual bears. And so he was sure
he would pass the audition swimmingly.

Thus, he would be able to infiltrate the circus that his ancient captor
worked in, and wreak his subtle revenge. Muahahaha!

Calem Puddlefoot

Added Mon Jul 6 09:22:09 2026 at level 51:
Calem was having a conversation with Jorek when he suddenly remarked, that
of all the things in Thera, what Calem best liked to do was get his feet
wet. New experiences, new lives. Endings of the boring old stuff, beginnings
of something novel. Death, as it is defined in the tarot deck that once
manifested his destiny.

It was a moment of profundity.

Calem has said many things before, many things he meant, and some he did
not. He is careless with words, whismical and unpredictable of mood. But
when he spoke those words of getting his feet wet, he paused and suddenly
said, wait that is deep! That is me! That really is me!

Feet wet. Like they are in puddles. Calem Puddlefoot would be a name that
captured the essence of him. And so he chose the last name, Puddlefoot.

First of the Two Cards: The Outlanders

Added Mon Jul 6 23:02:55 2026 at level 51:
When Calem first began his adventure, the Outlanders of Thar-Eris were a
likely candidate for a Cabal, probably the likelist. But through the actions
of people he had met, his views have shifted. In practice, what happened was
that the Outlanders were thronging in absurd numbers, and itching for any
thin excuse to fight anyone. Faced with enemies who would slumber instead of
adventure, the Outlanders needed more prey, and three of them found reasons
to treat Calem as prey.

Calem's rules of engagement are mostly as follows. Kill if villager or if
gold aura. Do not kill if it is a mage without a gold aura. This means he
will team up with Tribunal mages or Outlander mages of non-gold auras, and
indeed often even non-magical types were spared from any hostility. Calem is
good at killing, but he is pretty discriminate.

The Outlanders viewed Calem's cooperation with the Spire, or Scion, or the
Orcs, as a personal affront worthy of declaring him an enemy. Well, at least
three of them did. Baltinar pronounced him Scion when he heard second-hand
from the Drillmaster that Calem raided the village with an Orc. Well,
OBVIOUSLY Calem hates the village like any self-respecting mage would. Calem
resents being told which allies he can or cannot use in his battles.

Decayn, at Baltinar's advice, ambushed Calem while he was sleeping innocently
on a road. Calem thinks that the Outlanders' ability to hide and propensity
for ambush gives them a very violent default behaviour, because they feel the
impunity of being hidden from the rest of Thera, they feel zero consequences
from making an enemy.

Yoglolthen, the Nightreaver, the one who should have recruited Calem into his
career as a reaver of Thar-Eris, instead ambushed Calem out of the blue when
Calem was exiting the Jade Vaults having collected a hoard for the Veil.
Instead of respecting Calem's contributions as a true magical Veil thinner,
and instead of respecting Calem's potential leaning towards Thar-Eris,
Yoglolthen squandered it all. Calem should have fallen into the embrace of
the Outlanders, but instead has been insulted and hunted for flimsy pretexts.

By contrast, both Tribunals and Scions have been far less judgmental.
Neither has interrogated him about befriending Outlanders or their pledges.
They seem perfectly content to let him live his life however he wished.
The Tribunals would not let him break the law in town, and that rankles a
bit, but so far Calem hasn't been violent enough to see much need to do it
in front of a Tribunal.

The Dancing Bear Plot Completed

Added Thu Jul 9 20:52:12 2026 at level 51:
If you recall the earlier chapter on the Dancing Bear Plot, Calem planned to
take revenge on the old crone who imprisoned him for four years, but did not
want to do an outright murder. He wanted it to look like an accident. To do
that, he would infiltrate the circus, and use his grizzly bear form to
impersonate a trained circus bear. He learned to be expressive in form
because of having a drink with Lord Whiysdan, and thus he was able to
perform as a bear. Then, he needed a trainer.

Calem has many friends. Dondonxa is a ridiculous purple blobby reptile who
did not look like a normal saurian, and anyway the circus tamers were all
humans, so she would not fit in. Caserque, however, was perfect. Old,
charismatic, with an ugly scar to boot, he looked very convincing as a
trainer of bears. So Calem secured Caserque's consent.

While the two were not adventuring, they conspired to join the audition for
the traveling circus where the crone worked. Caserque and Calem played the
parts of trainer and bear perfectly. It was a brilliant audition, skilled but
not so skilled as to arouse suspicion of Druidic or Shapeshifting Magic.
Calem's revenge went off without a hitch. He joined the circus briefly,
entertained some villagers and townsfolk, and then one night, when the old
crone's tent was right next to the animal cages, Calem opens his own cage in
human form and assumed the bear. Forsaking stealth for speed, he charged into
the crone's tent and mauled her. She suffered grievous wounds in the initial
ambush, then assumed her dire wolf, already injured.

But Calem is the better mage. Even if the fight were fair, he would win
handily. He was, after all, the bear who could take a thirsty Berserker of
the Village all on his own. He mauled the crone and left her fortune teller's
tent in a great mess and charged off into the forest near the South Dairein
Settlement, leaving a mystery animal mauling passed off as an accident.

As for Caserque? He was fired from his circus job almost as soon as he had
started, and when discussions of handing him over to the authorities began,
he slipped away, flat in two dimensions and silent in his ragged cloak.

Calem's revenge is complete. The old crone is dead. What next lies ahead
for Calem's adventure? Many possibilities await.

Madam Calem and Impending Retirement

Added Mon Jul 20 03:59:42 2026 at level 51:
From Calem's beginnings, likely the only potential Cabals he would have
considered are the Outlanders and the Scions, in that order. Yoglolthen,
called Yugly by Calem, has cut off the first path. And the great number of
Scions has cut off the second path, Calem does not love being just one of a
large crowd.

To that end, Calem feels it is likely he will retire due to having no
greater mission. He is successful and wealthy, and can retire in comfort.
But he tries some things first.

First, Calem is now a Madam, not a Mister. Why did she do it?

Because Death is good, and Death is endings and beginnings. The end of male
Calem, and the beginning of female Calem, could be a change to bring some
novelty. Madam Calem will now continue adventuring and experience the world
as a middle-aged woman instead of a middle-aged man. Anyway, Calem never
did enjoy her previous male human form much. Not a very impressive form.
Sadly, the sex change did not make Calem much more impressive looking, she
now just looks like an unimpressive woman. Oh well.

Second, Calem will consider semi-retirement as an alternative to permanent
retirement. She will give away her rare and contested artifacts and then
travel Thera much less often than she used to.

Record Keeping: Calem's Pre-Transition Male Description

Added Mon Jul 20 03:59:58 2026 at level 51:
Standing at five and a half feet, Calem is fairly short for a human man. His
pasty complexion, fair hair, and pale grey eyes mark him as hailing from the
northwestern reaches of the main continent. His posture is upright, in fact
overly so, as if self-conscious about his shorter stature. His hairline is
arranged in a sharp widow's peak, apparently receding along the sides,
though he keeps it in a style attempting to cover up that fact. Other than
the strategically-draped fringe, Calem keeps his hair short and practical
along the sides and back. His eyes are grey and unemotive, somewhat set too
close together, throwing off the harmony of his facial proportions. His
jawline is squarish and robust, but his chin is narrow and receding, giving
him a pronounced overbite that even his thick beard and moustache cannot
obscure. Wiry ginger strands protrude from his otherwise blond facial hair.
His movements are wary, preferring obscurity to prominence, and his body
language gives the impression of one not confident of his appearance.
Nevertheless, something about that calm, intense gaze marks this unassuming
man as not simply a trifle to be dismissed.
