Role
Power, an unquenchable desire
Added Fri Aug 1 17:35:08 2008 at level 51:
Carintsei has had a taste of power. He's drawn blood from foes both weak
and strong, and yearns for more bloodshed. It is not the blood or the
combat that he's drawn to, though he certainly enjoys the exercise, but
the celestial feelings of superiority when his fallen foe grovel at his
talons. He relishes the look in their eye when he graciously returns
most of their belongings - the look of worship, gratitude and awe. He
enjoys being worshipped, and knows that with each soul he takes, word of
his prowess and status is spread amongst Thera - Carintsei, the Powerful.
Carintsei, the Mighty. Carintsei, the Forgiving.
As his legend grows, more flock behind him, granting him even greater
Power.
Evil and reckless, a bad combination
Added Mon May 26 11:38:41 2008 at level 22:
Carintsei is evil, not crazy. He's too arrogant and too vain, despite his
physical shortcomings, to be aware that he's not as smart as he believes
himself to be. Nonetheless, he is dangerous, in fact, far more dangerous
than a wiser man with a sense of consequences.
An arrogant man, not half as smart as he thinks, yet far smarter than most.
An arrogant man with no sense of right and wrong, yet a stranglehold,
irrational sense of order, can be so breathtakingly reckless that,
ironically, his recklessness becomes his greatest strength. Because he is
capable of anything, of taking risks that mere madmen wouldn't consider,
his adversaries can never predict his actions, and surprise serves him
quite well.
Fear controls civilizations
Added Mon May 26 11:24:08 2008 at level 21:
Carintsei believes that fear is a weakness, for it presumes that there
are outcomes in life that are beyond his control, and beyond the control
of civilization. He believes that nothing is beyond his control, that
nature is a simple machine, with no more mysteries than a ticking clock,
not some divine gift that must be nurtured. Nature can be bent and
twisted like a young plyable branch to his whim, and manipulated into
whatever he wants.
Fear is also a weakness, he believes, because it humbles him. Humility
is for the meek. The powerful, ones with true strength, may occasionally
need to pretend to be humble, because deceit is the true currency of
civilization, yet if he becomes truly humble, he knows that he will be
no different than every other mortal, plodding through a lifetime of
failire and self-doubt. He has vowed to avoid all passive responses
to the challenges of life. Instead, he must explore the unknown rather
than flinch from it in fear.
A leader's visions in his head
Added Mon May 26 10:59:36 2008 at level 20:
He didn't believe in the restless dead. Not for a minute. Carintsei sees
himself as a controlled man, outside of that one outburst with his family,
yet lately he's acted like a man who was hunted. A sudden draft, even a
warm one, chilled him to the bone and caused him to turn frantic circles
seeking the source. Inthe middle of the night, the most innocent of
sounds could scramble him from his bed faster than any call of war ever
could. Harmless shadows would cause him to twitch, jump, and draw his
blade against the air.
A glance in the morror could cause Carintsei to spin around instantaneously,
as he often glimpsed a presence, dark and vaporous, standing or moving
behind him. Other times, this entity seemed to be within the mirror. He
couldn't focus on it, study it, because the moment he became aware of it,
it was gone.
Carintsei believed that they were just stress induced visions of his
active imagination, imaginations that must be repressed. Carintsei
could do that if he put his mind to it - he had the capacity to be
exceptional at anything to which he applied himself. He is far
more intense than other men. He is a possessor of great natural
gifts, and the energy to use them.
Deaths - revealed in dreams
Added Mon May 26 10:22:31 2008 at level 19:
Darkness.
Clouded, hazy dreams.
...
Down Seleni fell, abruptly and hard, her natural grace deserting her as she
plumbeted down the solid marble stairs, though she regained it in her death
posture at the bottom of the staircase...
...
A pink spot in the center of Olphalina's forehead marked the point of impact,
quickly rising into an ugly bruise. Her eyes fluttered, her mouth opened.
"Father...". The leaden pitcher swung down again, and she was silent...
...
Juari's small arms and legs flailed weakly as the decorative pillow pressed
into her young, angelic face. Her back arched, her body shuddered, and the
infant's heart beat no more.
...
A killer revealed
Added Mon May 26 10:17:06 2008 at level 19:
"You don't remember? Perhaps it's for the best," his father told Carintsei,
"Let sleeping hounds lie, and it'll all blow over."
"Blow over? My face...," Carintsei groaned, "Tell me."
"Seleni's dead. Olphalina and Juari too."
Shocked, Carintsei blinked and blinked again, he could not speak. His
throat constricted, he could not breathe. His eyes closed, tears spilled
from his clenched eyes.
"You killed them Carintsei."
Abruptly and without warning, Carintsei turned his head over the side of
the bed and vomited. Vomited more explosively than he had ever experienced
in the depths of his worst childhood illnesses. Bitter, thick brown-green
vomitus came up from the pit of his stomach. He was untroubled by nausea,
but his abdominal muscles contracted painfully, so tightly that he thought
he may be permanently doubled over at his waist. More and more vomit
spewed up, spasm after spasm, until he spewed a thin watery green bile so
acidic that his throat, gums, and even his lips burned from contact with
it.
He squeuzed his watering eyes shut against the sight of the flood, but
could not block out the stench. The twisting pain in his stomach was
extraordinary, death throws, Carintsei thought.
Finally, darkness poured into his head. Sweet darkness, as if the vomit
and bile were rising relentlessly from his belly to drown out his
consciousness.
Darkness.
- Scarred and damaged, yet alive.
Added Fri May 16 21:42:25 2008 at level 8:
As greasy with fear sweat as a heifer on a slaughterhouse block, Carintsei
woke from a nightmake that he could not remember. Something was reaching
out for him - that's all he could recall, bony stark-white hands clutching
at him out of the dark - and then he was awake, his heart pounding in his
ears, bile rising painfully in his throat.
His stomach felt as if he had been clubbed mercilessly by a hoarde of
cruel orc with their big meaty fists and leaden pipes.
He was bloody. He was bruised. He was shaken. Yet he was alive.
Carintsei also thought he was alone, but just when he felt capable of
summoning the energy to shift to a more comfortable position, he heard
a man quietly clear his throat. The phlegmy sound had come from beyond
the foot of the bed in which he lie, from the right corner of the room.
Instinctively, he knew that anyone watching over him in the dark could not
be a person with the best intentions.
He was relieved that he hadn't moved his head or made a sound. He wanted
to understand as much of the situation as possible before revealing he was
awake - for any false move he made might be his last.
As he surveyed the room through veiled eyes, Carintsei deduced that he was
lying in the darkest end of the room, farthest from a small window which
allowed into the room just a meager drop of light, but the corner his
hidden visitor was in was almost equally shrouded in gloom. He stared
for a long time, until his eyes began to ache, before he was at last able
to make out the vague, angular lines of a chair. And in that chair, a shape
as lacking in detail as that of a robed and hooded executioner.
He was uncomfortable, achy, thirsty, but he remained utterly still and
observant.
After a while, he realized that the sense of oppression with which he'd
awakened was not an entirely psychological symptom: Something heavy lay
wrapped around his abdomen, And it was cold - so cold, in fact, that it
had nummed his middle to the extent that he hadn't immediately felt the
chill of it.
Shivers coursed through him, yet he remained silent.
Suddenly Carintsei intuited the identity of the man in the chair. Beyond
question, it was his father - but why?
******** ******** ******** ******** ********
Sensing that Carintsei was awake, his father rose from the corner of the
room and slowly walked to the foot of the bed his son was lying in.
Without uttering a word, he picked a gilded pewter mirror from a small
table sitting next to the bed, and held in front of Carintsei's face:
The right side of his face appeared to be more strongly affected by gravity
than the left: slack yet with a pulled look. His left eyelid drooped.
That side of his mouth was turned down in a half frown. From the corner of
his beak oozed a stream of drool. His eyes rolled wild with fear, and
seemed not to be focused on anything in the room. He tried to raise his
hands to cover his eyes, so he would not have to see the monster in the
reflection, but they flopped uselessly and would not respond. He thrashed
his head wildly from side to side, trying to rid the vision from his
memory. Finally, he locked gazes with his father, who stood only a single
pace in front of him. Carin
