Description
Large and horned, this creature - quite obviously a minotaur - is covered
with thick fur.His fur, patterned in large black and white splotches,
covers his heavily muscled body. His face, large and bovine, seems dull,
better suited to chewing cud than bearing arms. His horns however, sharp and
long, are of obvious pride to this bull, black bone jutting proudly from his
head.
His body, strong and muscular, is covered with scars and scabs, testament
to the many battles he has both won and lost. Still hale though, despite
encroaching age. His fur, once a deep brown, is starting to show signs of
grey, and his once strong movements seem more determined now, but less
energetic.
Role
And Vindicator
Added Tue Jun 13 18:13:54 2006 at level 51:
The last stages of his life, the bull has taken on the mantle of Vindicator.
A position guaranteed to ensure that his service to the Spire is both strong, and
unfortunately short. Marked by constant battles, getting worn down and tired, Caroolth
wonders at his accomplishments. So very much done, and yet not enough. No lasting
peace, nothing more than a few brief moments of respite during these many years of
war.
Soon, though, the bull will go home, and lay his great, horned head upon the lap of
his aged mother, and pray for her forgiveness for his inability to bring any
lasting change. The dauntless courage of youth matured into the competent strength
of a man, and, even though still strong enough in body, the bull's spirit ails and
sickens at his perceived failure.
Tired and in despair, the bull strives to bring some brief mark, a minute
moment of peace between the outlanders and the Spire, just to prove that it can
be done, and that there is more to this life than the bloodshed and unending war.
Provost no more.

Provost no more. The bull, having stepped aside from the most powerful
position in the Spire, reluctant to weaken the Spire through his inability to
fill it's large shoes, is almost at a loss. His vitality, weakened through years
of hard battle, is nearly spent, and still, there is no peace, not even so much of
the merest whisper of hope.
Saddened by this, and longing for the simple life before, when he grew into his
strength, and could protect his mother and their neighbours from raiders, A long life
spent in wasteful battles, sparring with the Outlanders over their war. Nothing could
be further from what Caroolth desired.
Tired, as well, and embittered from long years of hard service, an undercurrent of
anger seeps through Caroolth's veins, a shortened temper.
Caroolth spoke with a paladin on altruism, the concept that a person can help
another soul without any expectation of recompense, or anything positive.
Remembering this, Caroolth asked Gazmokia, a paladin who had recently slain
a Magistrate traveling with Caroolth, for aid to help a lost traveler.
The experience left Caroolth even more bitter, useless paladins, too much of a
coward to offer help. His opinion is even further lowered of paladins, now.
Not that it was very high to begin with, but that's just how it goes when someone
speaks one thing, and does another.
So, what shall the bull do now?
Passages of time

Caroolth, Provost Magistrate, when was the last time he was not?
Mature now, 56 years old! Longer than the bull had ever expected to live, and
the responsibility of the Spire upon his shoulders! You would think that the
wear of this position would show itself in gray fur, sagging flesh, but
Caroolth is still healthy enough, strong enough, and determined enough,
to more than fill his role of Provost Magistrate.
In these years, though, there is still a toll. Friends come and gone, foes come
and gone, and the Spire now in a long-awaited period of prosperity,
the Outlanders of Thar-Eris nothing more than a quiet whisper upon the
winds that travel the breadth of Thera.
This quiet, peace even, though the overwhelming goal of this bull, grates upon
him. He is a fighter, defined by the struggle, and what then, when the struggle
dissipates, and familiar faces are gone and dead, or retired, or so deeply
changed so as to be unrecognizable? How does one deal with an unexpected old age?
By finding something worthy of doing, a task so monumental as to outweigh
every other accomplishment in life! This bull, his strong back having carried the
Spire to a semblance of strength, turns his eyes to the mortal enemies of the Spire,
the Outlanders of Thar Eris, and peace.
Punishments and Crime
Added Wed Mar 8 09:21:30 2006 at level 51:
Zhalindra broke the law, she chased an outlander from the Captain into Galadon,
and attacked him there. The usual punishment for this, a warrant and death
renders her useless as a Magistrate, a role in which she has promise. She admitted her
mistake, came right to me with it, and was plain-spoken about having made it.
Caroolth's view of this is a mix of mercy and harshness. Instead of inducting
her, and giving her the deserved warrant, he demoted her to Seantryn, and ordered
her to allow the Captain there to kill her. Any further mistakes on her part will
result in her uninduction from the Spire, of course, but her genuine remorse at
her mistake, and Caroolth's awareness that mortals make mistakes, bids him to have
some compassion. The punishment for the crime having been executed, the matter is done
in his eyes, although it does raise a troubling question for Caroolth.
This is the first time he has needed to punish a Magistrate, and there is a certain feeling of
remorse that he has, despite his belief in the necessity of fair and just punishment.
This is a matter on which he will have to give further thought.
Provost
Added Thu Feb 16 15:09:22 2006 at level 51:
The Spire, so quiet, is the place for this minotaur.
This quiet is perhaps why he has advanced so quickly through the ranks.
First, Provincial, then finally, Provost, after several conversations with Dalteric.
As he struggles to fill this role, the bull has to grow more mature.
Still young, as his kind measure it, but wise beyond his years.
His hope is to bring this Spire back into at least a semblance of strength,
difficult as that will be, amongst the numerous Outlanders, and other criminal
elements common to this modern day.
First, new Magistrates, and ensuring that they learn their role well.
Second, solidification of the strength in the Spire.
After this is done, his hope is to have strengthened the Spire to the point
where it may fulfill its duty to the protected cities. His thoughts
are not around the war with the Outlanders, or vain dreams of expansion, merely
ensuring the practical day-to-day items are covered off on, one by one.
Tribunal now!
Added Thu Jan 26 12:36:43 2006 at level 38:
Now a member of the Tribunal, a Magistrate of the Spire, Caroolth
has been busy. Learning and watching occupy his every waking moment.
Vicious battles with outlanders mar his time, but that's to be expected.
All in all, the time has been good, and Caroolth is happy. He does not
seek to kill much, nor to make enemies, simply to promote order as he sees it.
An Orderly Beginning

A minotaur's life begins with a singularly painful experience. Rape, and the
eventual birth of a monstrosity, typically drive the mother of the bull to
despair and suicide. In this case, the human mother was of a strong sort,
hardy mountain people, and had a goodly heart. She chose to raise her child,
and raise him she did. Outcast from her people, but she saw Caroolth to
adulthood.
The mountain folk lived a very well, random life, with numerous raids, and
infighting, and politicking. This disorder led Caroolth to thinking,
pondering in his slow, steady mind, the merits of his society. The slow
thoughts of the bull were solidified when his mother took him to Seantryn
Modan.
The city wooed him with its prideful procession, the strict order in which
business was conducted, and Carollth was smitten. This was the antidote to
all the ills he saw in his earlier life. Bidding his mother a brief
farewell, the bull moved on to Seantryn to begin anew.
