Description
The man standing before smiles gently, his face fixed in a calm expression
as he gazes outward. Simple robes of brown and grey cover his body, though
both sleeves are rolled up, revealing dark discolorations of purple and
black along his arms. A closer inspection reveals the same markings
along his neck, where they are more visibly the scarring from some ancient
scarring. A wide, blunt nose dominates his plain face, and thick eyebrows
match the brown color of his long unkempt hair. There is an odd look to
his slate-grey eyes, clashing sharply with his calm expression, that
deschides some strange darkness inside. From his robes and belt hang
a multitude of small pouches at satchels, from which the scent of decaying
organic matter arises.

3rd of the Month of the Heat
Ah! The how the stench of death and decay fills my lungs with boundless joy
and optimism for the future. The hot air here is thick with it. Though I
train hard in my guild, the nosi spirits have not yet granted me the power to
commune such death. Though such things have never stopped me, haha!
Oh no. Some rats off the ships at Hamsah and foul grain supplies were enough
to spread theh plague through this forsaken town. And the local priest of
Rayihn powerless to stop it, that poor sap.
Of course, by the blade or the plague, I know death to be inescapable. And
yet, these modern folk strain and strive and work endlessly to prevent
the inevitable. A fools errand, no doubt, but they can be frustratingly
successful at tims in delaying it. And so, faithful servant of spirits, I
restored the natural order by laying low the town.

4th of the Month of the Heat
Well, well, it seems I was a little naughty last week. I have spells, you see,
where I take the restoration of the natural order into my own hands. Is it
wrong, to do so? That is not for me to say. The audacity of these mortals is
enough to drive one insane!
But I have not told the entire truth, some details still escape this story.
That was no random town, ravaged by plague. I was born and raised there, on
my mother's farm. It was nothing special. The town or my childhood. Good folks
and bad, greedy and pious. Outside of Balator they grew wheat.
But in my 15th year, my mother grew ill. I had no father, some drow who
wandered through town one night. I doubt he even knows of my existence.
The Emperor-priest of Rayihn ruled in the Imperial Palace, in those days--and
so it was one of her worshipers who tried to save mother.
He failed, of course, telling me, "Such is the way of things, death will take
us all." True words, even if spoken by a fool. To have such wisdom, yet
cower behind the false comfort of a city's walls?
And so, if this priest has not the power over life and death, who does? My
long search led me to the wilds, where death comes swiftly and silently,
and the diseases that bring low to civilization are born. The nosi spirits
found me there in the woods, faint wisps and shadows, whispering of age and
pestilence. With their aid.
I do not seek control of such things, of course not! Merely to restore the
natural order. To bring death where it has been delayed.
Of course, as I said, I have my spells. Sometimes, some folks just have it
coming. These things happen.

What do I know of these strange spirits? Very little, so far.
Following my mother's death, and prompted by the (to him) unperceived wisdom
of the village priest, I sought out the sources of disease and decay. At first,
I thought the priest simply had not the power--so I worked as a servant for
mighty paladin before I learned the truth. All that strange piety had not the
power to combat death, though he pretended otherwise. In my wanderings, I
apprenticed for a time with a dark necromancer, surely he has power over life
and death? Not so, not so! Undeath is a cheap, parlor trick, giving semblence
of life to that which is dead.
After abandoning the necromancer, I wandered long through the woods and streams
of Thera, seeking the true source of decay. I came upon a forest, entirely
devoid of animal life. How could this be? What aura of death lay over this
strange place?
It was at the edge of this forest, twixt land and sea and sky, that the nosi
first spoke to me. Their voices, which at first I mistook for an eerie wind
through the trees, told me of the cycle of life and death.
Bit by bit, for they were difficult at first to comprehend, I learned that
this cycle at times has been disturbed--when the growth of man's cities
outpaces the natural order, and they teem with overcrowded life. In such
times, death and disease must strike out at these cities, restoring the
cycle.
I know not their true power, yet, only that we are of a shared purpose. I seek
them again at the edge of land's end.

Wild wandering, in search of the wild nosi spirits, Chaille had come
across a small mining village, where humans and dwarves worked together
pulling adamantite from the earth. The town was well guarded, by
mercenaries and the dwarven healer Gorin.
Years later, blessed, and newly empowered by nosi, Chaille returned to
the village outskirts and envisioned its destruction. Calling upon the
nosi, he spread diseases and poisones through the well-water, and
soon many in the town were ill. Gorin was hard pressed to contain the
contagion, and was greatly weakened when Chaille finally entered
the town to do open battle.
Even despite his drained state, Gorin fought fiercly, but in the end
was overcome. Standing over the dying healer, axe in hand, Chaille
laughed gleefully, pure happiness fixed in the smile in his face.
'You see, preacher, the failure of your efforts? You will draw metal
from the earth, no more. Death has come to this place, and it shall
not be denied any longer.'
Gorin breathed deeply, drawing from the last bit of his strength,
'And what will you achieve with your life, dark one? Or is it merely
mindless slaughter that you seek.'
'Achieve? Why must one always achieve, achieve, achieve. Your kind
always wish to leave their mark on this world, but why? Live, and
die, but leave Thar-Eris as she is. This is what I do, I destroy
your achievements.'
And Chaille laughed again, but the dwarf responded, 'What of the
innocents, the children, dying with me in this room? Surely their
deaths come sooner than need be.'
At this Chaille turned, looking, as if for the first time, at the
diseased and dying child in a small cot, pushed into the corner of
the room. The boy slept fitfully, on the edge of death. Chaille
grimaced at the sight, and opened his mouth, as if to speak. At once,
a change came over the shaman and his face darkened, mouth twisting
into a vicious sneer.
'What of them? Death comes to us all, and I am its harbinger.'
Hand extended, Chaille called on the nosi, and the earth shook in
the room and the church began the crumble. Falling stones from
the roof struck the boy violently, and hsi breathing ceased.
'Look what you made me do? You fool, see what your babbling has wrought?'
Turning back to the dwarf, Chaille saw that he, too, had been crushed
under the weight of a fallen beam, and that his words had fallen
upon deaf ears.
The darkness passed from his face, and he frowned. Shrugging fitfully,
Chaille turned to leave, muttering to himself, 'It is done, for
better or for worse.'
The wind howled through the town, as it burned to the ground, and
seemed to carry voices from afar, relishing in the havoc and in the
death. The shaman paused, and strained to hear. Had he pleased the
nosi with this act? Did it matter?
The Chase
Added Tue Sep 3 15:59:15 2013 at level 43:
Chaille stumbled wildly through the woods, blood flowing from numerous
wounds. His breathing was heavy and his eyes wild, in rage or panic,
or perhaps some combination of the two. The orc, too, was wounded, and
he wavered between caution and the overwhelming desire to bring death
to his enemy. He paused briefly to sear his wounds, calling upon the
spirits to heal and protect.
Always, urging him onward were the voices of the nosi. The half-drow's
madness had deepened, driving him into bouts of self-doubting despair
and overwhelming confidence. At times, Chaille seemed even to be unsure
of the nosi's existence, and grew defensive, unprovoked, when discussing
his conversations with the spirits. And yet, he was to be an unblinking
instrument of vengeance upon the defilers and the city-dwellers.
Caught in the throes of one such rapid mood-swing, Chaille gasped for
breath behind a tree, frozen with indecision. As he so often recited
to his foes, the shaman of the nosi did not fear death, for it was his
natural, inevitable end. But like much of his claims, his fears and
doubts were so often veiled behind rather unsubtle bluster. The orc was
dangerous, not to be trifled with.
At once, the panic passed, and Chaille gathered himself to return to the
hunt. Stepping from his cover, he set off in pursuit of the foul
creatures footsteps. Yet the moment had passed, and his quarry was gone.
The doubts, however, remained.
