Description
Before you stands a short, wiry avian figure. Her overclothes are muted and
indistinct, and are pulled tightly against her diminutive form to keep them
from fluttering. With her hood partially pulled back, you can see a rounded
face and big, oval eyes that are masked by soft, downy feathers that are a
darker vermillion shade than the rest of her plumage. A short, sharply
curved beak rises from under her seemingly perceptive eyes, which are deep,
still pools of incandescent tangerine that give this bird a slightly
contemplative look even as they dart about her surroundings. Matching the
coloration of her crested head, lush tawny feathers smolder like a winter
sunrise from within her robes where her plumage is visible on her body, but
they are not so bright as to keep her from receding into the shadows.
Outlines of various weaponry are visible against this bird's sable robe, and
she moves with a balance and grace that belies some amount of martial
training.

Charrooth crouched, panicking, in the shadow of the Inn's wall, trying to make
herself as small as she could. A lone mare, still tied to the hitching post,
whinnied crazily and kicked against her tether, while the other horses had
freed themselves and disappeared into the smoky cacophony that enveloped them
all. Screams battered her ears, the smoke of burning trash (and worse) seared
her eyes, and when the wind shifted she could feel the heat of the growing
fire against the back of her tightly folded wings. Her breath was ragged and
low, and the fire seemed to be growing inside her lungs, as well, just like
the flames of fear rampaging within her. The orcs had come to Easthaven, and
she was trapped in the Hell that followed.
She squeezed Airik's hand tightly in hers and looked into his eyes, hoping to
find support. What she saw, though made her breath catch in her raw, smoky
throat. There was only fear in those beautiful, amethyst eyes - they bordered
on a wild, mindless, animal fear that mirrored the horse that still whined
terribly behind them. A maniacal, ethereal sensation of hopelessness crashed
over her in a hurricane of emotion and she felt (or did she know?) that he was
already lost to her. Her dear, sweet Airik was gone. But no, he was right
here, with her, wasn't he? Lost for merely an instant in her bewilderment,
Charrooth was brought back to herself by the low sound of friction and a
sickening emptiness in her hand, which now held only a few bright feathers.
She looked up from her now empty hand and watched, in excruciating slow
motion, as the love of her young life ran deliriously into the carnage the
orcs had wrought. As the smoke and noise consumed him, Charrooth could only
scream - "Airik, no!!!"
"No, no, Airik, no!" she cried softly into her bedroll as she pulled herself
out of her nightmares and into the cold, haunted pre-dawn air of her Academy
bunk. Confident that nobody else was yet awake, she allowed herself a few more
moments to cry before she quietly got herself up and ready. The others would
not see the stormclouds of pain and loss that darkened the skies of her heart.
Charrooth would sleep no more this morning, she knew, so she might as well
return to her training.
Taking wing in the early dawn

Charrooth was born in Ayr'Trinil but left with her mother to move to Voralia
when she was young enough that she barely remembers it. She also has only the
faintest memories of her father. Based on what little information she's been
able to collect, she thinks that he somehow got on the bad side of the
Lhiltrill family. One of her primary motivations is to find out the truth of
this story, and discover what happened to her dad.
Charrooth's mother took flight to Voralia because her brother, Daldrit
Truefeather, has a successful shop there and was able to take them in. Growing
up in the city, Charrooth saw that there are shadows where darkness can take
root even in the goodliest of places. Despite the best intentions of the
city's rulers, there was poverty, crime, and suffering among the citizenry,
and city's guardsmen were incapable of keeping the evils of the world, such as
orcs and nightwalkers, out of the city.
Voralia allowed a relatively normal childhood for Charrooth. She played, she
learned, she grew, and she discovered young love. But then evil ripped her
wonderful boyfriend Airik away from her during an orcish raid and absolutely
shattered her heart. After this, Charrooth receded to the shadows of her life,
both figuratively and literally. She became withdrawn and sullen. She spent
more time alone, which she preferred to pretending not to be sad. Eventually,
she began to focus her effort and energy on training, as she enjoyed the
distraction from her heartsickness. When she came of age, her uncle Daldrit
secured her admission into the Academy and arranged for Kavan Lassion, famed
headmaster of the Voralian assassins' guild, to take her on as a pupil and
teach her the ways to keep a flame strong within the darkness.
Character Traits:
-Charrooth experiences deep inner turmoil and emotional turbulence but tries
very hard to douse the flames of her emotions, or at least mask them. This
often comes off as gallows humor.
-Charrooth is not great with numbers, much to her merchant family's chagrin.
-She also has a penchant for matchmaking, subconsciously driven by her own
loss of love.
-Because of Airik, orcs arouse very strong negative emotions in Charrooth. Fear, anger, disgust, hopelessness, etc ... are all possible reactions to the mention or sight of an orc.

Charrooth rested quietly in her favorite branch, watching rain splash into a
lake/pond tucked away far in the north and distort the placid surface with
their impact. As the raindrops became ripples propagating themselves outward
in innumerable circles, she meditated on the wisdom of Lord Einoh and the path
his teachings had revealed. Atop his teachings and honed by years of prayer in
his holy silence, Charrooth had become a true Maran. She was a weapon of the
Light and a bulwark against the darkness, just as she had intended to become.
But she knew she couldn't rest, there was ever more work to be done.
Preoccupied by focus on her duty to the Fortress, she still had not uncovered
the truth of what had befallen her father, Bubo Bubo.
After a tragic accident while investigating in Ayr'Trinil, Charrooth had
briefly considered dropping her quest to discover his fate. The merciful Lady
Azorinne and Elder Prophet Grysaor, her dearest mentor, had convinced her of
the folly of this, however. After a time of prayer and penitence she had
refocused her efforts on the city in the sky and, ironically, the city's
underworld. It was controlled with a tight claw by the Lhiltrill family, the
same clan Charrooth believed to be responsible for her father's untimely
disappearance.
Although she had found the citizenry of Ayr'Trinil to be unwilling (either due
to fear or complicity) to discuss the Lhiltrills with a strange bird, an
opportunity to advance her investigation had arisen while she was caring for
her Uncle Daldrit after he had taken ill. Blessedly he had recovered, but in
the depths of his sickness, while addled by fever and strong healing
tinctures, Daldrit had been uncharacteristically loose-beaked and willing to
talk about family history. Consequently, Charrooth had gotten her first break
in the mystery.
Daldrit explained that Bubo Bubo, his brother in law, had been exceedingly
bright and capable at many different things - a polymath of sorts with a touch
of the foresight. Charrooth had never even heard a whisper of this before and
was perplexed by this revelation. He had done well in Ayr'Trinil with a
business that shipped goods up and down the mountain and was a supplier to
most of the merchants in the city. He was also a big personality, well known
and well liked throughout the city. Daldrit chirped on through slurred speech
about how Bubo had quite the penchant for gambling! As he rarely lost big,
though, it had not been problematic. In fact, the old man had laughed tiredly,
Bubo had been so good at gambling he had started to dip a talon into
oddsmaking himself. Charrooth did not laugh with him, though, for she was
already thinking about who would have been in control of running all of the
numbers in Ayr'Trinil's gambling halls: the Lhiltrills.
... and the weariness of we who stay behind. (II of II)

Just before falling back to slumber under the warm, weighted blanket of the
opium tincture the healers had provided, Daldrit provided a final breadcrumb
of information. When Bubo sent his family to Voralia, he wouldn't give a clear
reason. He did say, though, that he knew how to find something the Lhiltrills
were looking for, but that he didn't think they should have it. Bubo's words
had said that he just needed a couple of weeks to take care of things, but his
round eyes had shown a dark foreboding. This was the last time Daldrit saw
Bubo.
Fueled by this insight, Charrooth returned to Ayr'Trinil with a renewed vigor
to discover the truth. She intensified both her snooping and her networking,
making a point to forge connections with those in the city who may possess
valuable information. Following Sensei Aarihymi's advice, she befriended some
of the biggest hubs of information in town. From Governor Haver'shm to
Glitter, from Gryvan to Florimel the chatty seamstress did Charrooth flitter
and flutter about. Naturally she didn't forget Queen Myrna'shi Balar'kyn, the
matriarch of the society's gossip circuit. Of course, she approached no
darkhearts in this endeavor.
She did, however, come to realize that there was one Lhiltrill in the sky city
whose heart had not been tainted by the darkness in his bloodline. She worked
hard to cozy up to Awhri in his darkened, smoky shop, and though he revealed
naught, she remained hopeful that she would eventually sway him to her aid.
Regardless, she knew she would never stop until she found her answer.
Charrooth Truefeather blinked slowly several times as her focus returned to
the present. The rain had stopped while she meditated, and she was being
treated to a double sunset as the mirror-like surface of the pond reflected a
second incandescent orb tracking towards the horizon to meet its twin. It
reminded her of the way two thoughts, both disparate and distinct, may
coalesce into each other and reveal some hidden wisdom that was nested deep in
the metaphorical space between them. Charrooth had faith enough in Einoh's
guidance to have no doubt that through zealous investigation and meditation,
she would be able to discern the fate of her father. As she lit down softly
from the tree on her sleek, dusky wings to leave the peace of the meadow
behind and rejoin the War, she nestled this hope tightly in her breast to
protect it from the encroaching twilight.
