Description

Your gaze surrounds a disheveled dwarf. His face seems to be chiseled from a block of charcoal, both from the dirt and soot which is caked into his rough skin. His nose is broken and is both swollen and crooked towards his left side. Bushy eyebrows run over the only pale feature on this dwarf: his eyes. Pale blue with a touch of green, they contrast the rest of what you see. Wild, matted hair, one time likely braided, falls down onto his wide shoulders. He is tall for a dwarf, at least four feet in height and likely one of the skinnier ones of his race. He does not smell of ale. Rather a stench of sweat, grime and soot pervades your senses. His arms are hairy and lean, but the grip on his weapon appears to be as firm as granite. He moves with a slow gait, but he does not seem to ever hesitate in his movements. As you gaze a bit closer, you see that...

Role

The Marble Search.

Added Sat Oct 18 08:16:51 2008 at level 51:
Well kin, as always there's quite a bit of news to report.
I have continued along my path as Drillmaster, and seeing the Village grow
is a rewarding responsibility. But the war is difficult, and painful on the body.
I bear the knowledge that I do not have much time left to wage this war, and make my impact
on Thera if something does not change. And Imp, Lyristeon has noticed this
and placed a gauntlets before me. It is a challenge, with important consequences.
For every three marbles I gather, he has promised to grant me a boon of life.
But if I fail to obtain six marbles or more, my axe is at the whims of his desires.

It is a great risk I take, and so far the task has proved most difficult with the Tribunals
harbouring all the marbles. I will have to find a way to slay the Provost Tlinglit to achieve this, or
face dire consequences.
Today is the Goddess Baerinika's wedding day, and I now bear her mark. This must be a good signal
that things are looking up.

A setback and then a new course.

Added Tue Oct 14 08:25:39 2008 at level 51:
Not long ago, I faced my greatest challenge, both recognizing a failure
in myself and sucking it up and overcoming it. I was battered, tired from the war
and frustrated in not seeing enough progress. I despaired...and then..the Goddess.
Just as I nearly topped over the edge of a periolous cliff, she guided me back
to strength, courage and the thirst for combat. And so here I am,
now a Drillmaster in the Village with a new task ahead of me. Teaching, guidance
and living a courageous existence in the hopes of inspiring my fellow Villagers.

I have seen the abyss, and it is gruesome. I do not intend to tread there again.
Lighter days are ahead, I can sense it in the wind.

The Trinity.

Added Thu Oct 9 09:07:31 2008 at level 50:
My kin, as I progress through the lands, some small bit of knowledge of
what makes a warrior great has made its way to me, mostly through my talks with
the Goddess Baerinika.

It is the Trinity of the purest warrior. Purity, Combat, Courage.

It is this that I now strive for. My family is gone, and I can do nothing to change that.
Through the life I have lead, and lead, I must prove to myself every day that I am no
coward, as I face some great magical powers in my quest. While I often suffer defeat,
it only makes me stronger. That is part of the element of combat, learning from my mistakes
and embracing the warfare. Next I must hone my mind to the war, purify it of all distractions
so that I am giving all my energies to the path I'm dedicated myself to. That, I believe, is purity.
Courage. Here is where it is tricky friends. The Priest Isendor once told me: No one can
tell you that you are courageous, you must know it yourself. My kin, I think I can now say this,
I am courageous. The line between courageousness and recklessness is a fine one, and I must tread
it carefully, but with the blessings of the Goddess Baerinika as well as the lucky of my beard,
I am in good hands.

Meeting with a Goddess.

Added Tue Oct 7 02:33:10 2008 at level 49:
Well my kin, it turns out I'm not alone in this. Not only am I not alone, but I have
met with the Goddess Baerinika, and she was without a doubt the most spectacular sight
my eyes have ever seen. If only my wife and son could be here to see me in a jungle
speaking with a Goddess! We spoke at length about my path, and I am sure she will see
that you both are well taken care of in the afterlife. I have decided to dedicate my quest
in her name, although we do have a conflict. I am not pure of heart as she is, and I know it.
But that is a burden I will ever carry, and I shall face my sins at the end with my chin up.

There is work to be done though. I now live in the Village. I am a berserker of the long courageous
line of berserkers who have walked the path before me or even my grandfather walked these lands.
I am proud of this, and I feel that my fears, while still creeping into me at times, can be controlled.
I try to face them every day, while still using my head to focus my rage where it belongs. And that is
with those who abuse magic, and any who would spread cowardice in these lands. My path is now set before me,
and it is up to me to see it to its end.

Encounter with Isendor.

Added Wed Oct 1 16:57:43 2008 at level 28:
Today, my search for the Lady Baerinika's sacred ground ended. Using my axe,
I hacked my way through some exotic shrubbery and came onto a mist-covered altar.
There, almost as though he had been waiting for me, was Isendor. Before I could blink,
we were engaged in a discussion of my past, and he taught me more of courage in a few moments
than I had learned in the years that laid behind me. Most importantly I learned that courage
has nothing to do with what others say or think of me. And though the dark-skinned fiend cursed me,
it is myself which determines whether this curse will have any effect.

I also spoke to her of what I must do, to achieve both purity and prove myself
courageous to none other than me. I must face my own flaws, my own fears, and tackle them
head on. For me, I think part of the way to do this is through rigorous training, so that
I do not hesitate next time I face a fearsome magic fiend, but rather spring into combat.
There are other fears and flaws I will have to face as I continue in my quest, and I will have to be open
to them all. Lastely, Priest Isendor gave me the blessing of the Huntress in White, and
I must admit that it was the most wonderful feeling I have yet had. Today is a good day,
filled with hope for the first time in ages.

A coward's decisions.

Added Mon Sep 29 23:29:36 2008 at level 25:
The past few years have been eye opening to say the least.
I have left my mountain and my friends, likely never to return. Seeing
the familiar faces of my kindred only reminds me of my wife and son.
There is but one path ahead of me - Redemption. How I am to go about this
I am still unsure, but I shall list what I have done, and share with you my fears
so that when I am gone, others may learn from this.

I have learned of the Village of Battleragers. A group wholly dedicated to one
cause, the destruction of magic. It is this force I have discovered which was used
to slay my family, and it is this form which is continually advanced giving one individual
more and more power to do as they see fit. It can be used to do good, but far greater
are the consequences when it is used to evil intent. The only permanent solution is to
eradicate it from these lands, back beyond the magical veil. I have chosen to being my
path and offer my axe to this Village of War, and see if I can make an impact in the war.

Equally important is my internal struggle, which I still currently struggle with.
Am I a coward? What makes a coward? This cannot be distinguished from sight, or word,
but only proven in action. What have my actions so far shown? My family is dead, and I
did nothing to stop it. The dark-skinned woman must still walk freely, though I have not
yet seen her or heard word of her whereabouts. Am I cursed to walk this path alone, or
is there something to be learned of this courage as a virtue? Is once a coward always a coward?
These questions tear at my soul, and unsettle me at night as I sleep and push away the nightmares
of my past.

I have heard of a Goddess, pure and undeterred who epitomizes Courage.
I have decided I must disregard any pangs of pride inside my belly, and seek
her out to dedicate myself to this cause. I intend to take no shortcuts,
and stop at nothing until this burden of cowardice is lifted from me.
Time will tell whether that is even possible.
The Lady Baerinika may be my only hope.

Screams pierce the night.

Added Thu Sep 25 05:09:42 2008 at level 5:
Screams pierce the night. There is the stench of blood in the air. I awoke
to this in a cold sweat, quickly taking in my surroundings. My hut was oddly empty.
My wife and son were missing. Why hadn't their movements awoken me? I then recalled
the previous day, spent toiling on the mountain building a new home for a friend.
Suddenly the screams stopped. All was quiet. I quckly moved to the back of my hut
and picked up a pair of lumberjack axes and moved to the hut's canvas entrance.
I opened the flap and peered out onto the mountain road which was just steps from
our hut. It is there that I saw the things that would forever change the course of my life.

A dark-skinned woman stood there, emanating light. Yet it was not a holy light, or one from
a natural source. Waves of mana envelopped her, at least that is all I can say to describe
whatever magic protected her. This caused me to shudder in fear, until I saw my wife and son.
You see, my wife has been only able to bear one child, and my son has given me more joy than
a dozen children could have given me. And there he was, standing between my wife and the woman.
There was a sharp look of pain on his face, as his features contorted. The dwarven race takes
pride on masking any hardships, and so I knew he must be in real trouble. Behind him, my wife
was lying on the ground, motionless for now. This explained why the screams had stopped.

There was a hammer at my son's feet. It was his. He was to become a blacksmith one day, and
that was his true love. Fear had frozen my body in these few moments, and confusion washed
over me as I tried to understood what was going on. The dark-skinned woman, now seeing me
under the star-lit landscape, turned to my son and raised a long thin finger towards him.

"Die" was all she said. And he did. Crumpling in a heap beside my wife, his beard only beginning
to take shape. My only descendant was gone.

As this reality took shape in my mind, the grip on my axes tightened as I moved into action.
I tried to shatter the barrier of magic surrounding her, but instead, with a wave of her hand,
I could not resist the urge to sleep. As I slept, I could hear her voice inside my head,
torturing my mind.

"A worse fate awaits you dwarf. Worse, far worse than the fate of your family. You shall live,
and you shall live knowing that you are and ever will be a coward, sleeping while I take everything
that you care about, powerless against the likes of me. CURSED, cursed you are and ever shall be,
and all will know that are heirless and alone, all alone in this world."

Hours later, as the sun rose to a desolate day, I awoke. Alone.
