Crraya Nevaihr the Handmaiden to Rayihn, Drillmistress of Battle

Conditions aboard the slave ship was wretched.  Men, women and children 
crammed into every available space, denied adequate room, food or 
breathing space. The stench was appalling - the atmosphere inhumane to 
say the least. 

She was called the Felaz, commanded by Captain Hallosin S'sambra (brother
of Narissorin S'sambra, a ruthless ex-Chancellor of the Scion), bound to 
Hamsah Mu'tazz. She was a very broad-decked ship, with a mainmast, schooner
rigged, and behind her foremast was a large, formidable cannon, which turned
on a broad circle of iron, on deck, and which enabled her to act as a pirate 
if her slaving speculation failed, and for defense . She had taken in, on 
the coast of Aturi, 336 males and 226 females, making in all 562, and had 
been out seventeen days, during which she had thrown overboard 55 who had
perished under harsh conditions. 

The slaves were all enclosed under grated hatchways between decks. The space 
was so low that they sat between each other's legs and were stowed so close 
together that there was no possibility of their lying down or at all changing 
their position by night or day.  As they belonged to and were shipped on 
account of different individuals, they were all branded like sheep with the 
owner's marks of different forms. These were impressed under their breasts or 
on their arms, burnt with a red-hot iron.  It is impossible to conceive the 
effect of this eruption - 517 fellow creatures of all ages and sexes and 
species, some children, some adults, some old men and women, all in a state 
of total nudity, hudded together, unable to move.

The heat in the slave-hold was so great and the odor so offensive that it 
was quite impossible to enter, even had there been room - or if you had 
wanted to.

It is into this inhumane living hell that I was brought into the world.

My mother, I've learned, was a beautiful servant in a High Lord's residence - 
her coat, a deeper slate than mine.  With stunning looks, and a lovely 
disposition, she was desired by man and woman alike, and it was no surprise 
she was deflowered and impregnated by her Master (by choice, or by force, I
will never know - though when I dream of her, I dream I was conceived in
love).

The Mistress of the house (understandibly) took offense to this offense to
her standing, and gave her husband two options - either to have my Mother
killed or to have her sold into slavery.  My Father chose the latter. 
(Again, I dream that this was due to his Love for her, and not cowardice.)

Little did he know (I hope) that the Mistress gave Captain Hallosin
instructions that my Mother's progeny be cast into the ragings seas of 
the Aryth - an impossible circumstance for any child, especially felar.

Over the hatchway stood a ferocious-looking fellow with a scourge of many 
twisted thongs in his hand, who was the slave driver of the ship, and 
whenever he heard the slightest noise below, he shook it over them and 
seemed eager to exercise it. He was a wretched man with burning ember for 
a soul, consuming the last vestigages of soul of the remaining slaves
onboard. 

It was he who was given the order to cast me into the Aryth.

I remember being surrounded by black water, with an incredible pressure 
choking my lungs which screamed desperately for air.  I remember moving my
arms around frantically, hoping beyond hope that someone would come and rescue
me.

I remember choking and gagging on salt water ass my lungs were squeezed small 
by the pressure.  My throat burned without air and my ears pounded terribly. 
My heart beat hard and fast in my chest.  There was no question that I was 
going to die.

I remember my eyes beginning to go black and opening my mouth to scream one
final cry.  I felt the cool rush of water flowing through the back of my
throat and nose as my consciousness started to slip away and was enveloped 
by darkness.

I do not remember breaking through the surface, nor do I remember reaching
out and grasping a floating piece of driftwood - but I must have.

I awoke to the sound of seagulls who were circling endlessly around my head. 
Though I was nearly submerged in the seas of the Aryth, my foreclaws were so
deeply imbedded in the floating log, there was little chance of them being
dislodged.

My throat was raw and burned by the seawater and I was chilled deeply to 
the bone, but, miraculously, I was alive.

My survival instinct kicked in and I scrambled atop my floating refuge, 
far too thankful and excited at being alive to be scared of the rolling
waters around me.  I had no food, no water, noone to keep me company, yet
I was as satisfied as if I had eaten the most scrumptious meal - though
the feeling of euphoria would not last for long.

For three days I drank and ate nothing.  On the fourth day, I succumbed to 
my intense thirst and drank some sea water.  This only made me feel sick, 
but that fourth evening, moisture could be felt in the air, and I prayed
for rain.  By my fifth day without water, a light drizzle started falling, 
which quickly turned into a downpour.  I raised my mouth to the heavens
and drank as deeply as I could.  Rain filled some crevices and holes in
the driftwood and I drank that as well.

Food was not so easy to come by and I only ate four times in all my days 
at sea - but the sea provided for me enough to survive.  

The first meal I had was a sea turtle that surfaced for some air.  I lifted 
it out of the water, tore its head off with my claws and drank its blood. 
I then ate nearly every bit of flesh I could claw out of it's shell, gorging 
myself in its savory goodness, saving only a few small morsels for later.

Those few morsels ended up being my salvation, as a large seabird met its
demise (and the insides of my stomach) as it landed on my floating home
to dine on one of those stingy bites.  It was this experience that taught
me sustainability - I will never completely finish a meal, and leave a few
scraps behind, just in case.  There will always be something hungrier than
me (or simply curious) that may be my next meal.

This also taught me patience and the benefits of complete silence and hiding
in plain sight - skills that became even more useful to me later in life.

In the end, I drifted for forty-nine days, washing up on the shores mere
miles from where I had began my journey, but to a far more luxurious and
accepting location - the bathhouse of Lady Rayihn.

It was then I began believing that it was her, the Lady of the Sea, who
saved me.  For what purpose, I wasn't sure, but I sure intended to find
out.

The impact of these events during her formative days in the Realm have
influenced Crraya's every action throughout her life.

* Born in a slaver's hold, she was never given a first or last name.  It
was the slaver himself who caller her "The Cryer" as it were her first 
newborn cries that alerted him that she had been born.  She responds to
this name (although adopted in female form), as these were the first 
words she remembers.  She would love to be formally named by her mother.

* Although she still has deeply-ingrained racial fears of water, she also
believe water provided for her and saved her life, and for that reason, 
she works hard to be more comfortable in and around it in an attempt to
overcome her fears and embrace the seas in love.

* She is distrustful of others, never knowing anyone's true intentions.  
To an even greater extent, she shows disdain (and hatred) for those who
flaunt their power over others.

* Her hatred for magicians is palpable, especially for those of Scion. Their
dark, devious, and "superior" ways make her boil in rage.  She would do
anything in her power to fill the chasm with rubble, never to be seen again.

* She chose the path of an assassin as she does not wish to be recognized
for her actions.  To do remarkable things and still pass through life
unnoticed would be her greatest victory.

* Chosing to join the Village was a difficult decision for her, as she
thinks it may draw attention to her, but she also felt that by joining
their most populous (and loudest) branch, her quiet nature would allow
her to slip through the cracks yet still be able to do the most good.

* Although she searches for her mother, deep down she believes her to be
dead, and has adopted the Goddess Rayihn as her surrogate - visualizing
the Bathhouse as her womb and her true home.  (She also believes that
the currents of the Seas cause hre to be drawn there even when she's not
intending to head there.)

* Because she was "homeless" from birth she has relied solely on instincts
to survive.  The conventions of "right" and "wrong" have no meaning to
her - her strong emotions guide her actions instead.

At a young age, I was approached by the Shadow Lord, Gedunthos Veldrin'ultrin, 
offering sweet words - of power and revenge.  He me riches and armors beyond
my wildest dreams.  He promised me that his guild would support me in my war 
against the magi.  He promised me anything I wanted, as long as I swore his
Blood Oath.  

He seemed to desperately want me to become a recruit of his Shadow Sect.  

As an orphan, I always wished a family, ones who would love and protect me,
and ones I could love and protect in return - and I very much wanted to
accept his proposition.  His rough but silky tongue wooed me, noone had ever
taken an interest in me... ever.  And because I had never had family, power, 
revenge or support, I was tempted by his offer.  

What concerned me, however, was how freely it was offered.  

Nothing had ever been given to me in myentire life, and to have *everything* 
I've ever wanted handed to on me on a silver platter just seemed too good to
be true.  So I held Gedunthos at bay, fending off his advances, while looking 
for the strings that *had* to be attached to his offer.  My cautious 
observations paid off.

What Gedunthos never spoke with me about was the Empire's pecking order.
To accept the Oath and become a lowly foot soldier, to be expected to follow 
orders from anyone and every citizen who made one, did not sit well with 
me at all.  To be bought into a life of slavery seemed eerily similar to 
the lives the 517 souls on my slave ship were destined to endure. 

What solidified my decision to refuse his offer was that while I was still
contemplating what he had offered me, quite a few Citizens attempted to 
"persuade" me into joining - by force.

A life of servitude to another mortal, any mortal, would not be for me.

During those same formative years, I continued to live my life, quietly
hunting the dark magi of Scion and any of those who tried to bully me.  
For the most part I've remained anonymous, slowly learning my strengths
and weaknesses - all while still searching for a family who might accept
me for who I was, a hunter who prefered to do battle alone.

It was one of those battles that helped me choose my calling.  I was 
tracking a magi from the North Galadon Road, through Galadon and onto 
the Eastern Road.  I struck quickly, but he was able to flee away from my
onslaught, where he attempted to lose me in the Ruins of Ostalagiah.  I
was not so easily discouraged, struck him again there - finally landing 
the killing blow after another short chase.

As I tended to my light wounds and cleansed my claws of my foe's blood,
I heard the hoarse bellowing of a human's voice in my ears, calling me to 
the Smitty.  When I returned to the ruins, to the source of the voice, 
I was pleasantly surprised by what I found (and heard).

The Smith, Tahren, offered me even more than Gedunthos ever could.

We did not speak long, as he was busy tending to a hefty pile of worn
blades, but what we spoke of was significant.  He offered me the 
opportunity to hunt magi as I saw fit and on my own terms.  We spoke
of respect for ourselves and for our foe, of brothers and sisters in
arms who would not ask anything of you that they would not offer 
themselves, and of making the most of one's life - my life.

To fight amongst equals for the same cause.  To be gifted brothers and
sisters who I may love or hate on their own merits.  To be trained by
the best tacticians and stoutest souls of Thera.  No strings.  No
slavery.  Just a collection of soldiers willing to fight and die for
their beliefs.

These are the Battleragers of Thera that I pledged my allegiance.

My birth mother loved me. I've never met her and I'm sure she's long 
dead, but she brought me into this world, and by doing so she sacrificed 
her life for me.  For that one simple act, I will love her forever.

My Lady Mother, Rayihn, she saved me from the clutches of death and sent
the currents to bring me to her long ago.  What she saw in a little wet
fela, I doubt I'll ever know - but I do know that she loves me. For giving
me the chance to taste the excitement of this world,  I will love her
until the day I draw my last breath - and perhaps into the beyond as well.

Those loves were easy - as easy as breating, really.

However, it took me far longer than that to love my myself.  What had I
done to deserve the sacrifices my mothers made in me?  Did they know
something about me that I didn't know on my own?

These questions hounded me for years, haunting my dreams.

I'd wake up night after night, my heart pounding, soaked through in sweat
after the same nightmare tormented my unconscious self - I was back under
the turbulent water of the Seas, struggling for air... but this time
knowing that there was noone to save me.  I was abandoned by my mother and
Lady Mother Rayihn, because I was unworthy of their love.

Only after all those sleepless nights did I realize one key thing - In
order to love myself I had to believe that I was worthy of love, that 
there was a higher purpose waiting for me, whatever it was. 

I would find that purpose in my dedication to my Battleragers and to
repaying my Lady Mother for her faith in me.

I am sure that these two loves would cause me conflict in the future
but to deny the power of either would be to lose myself.
