Description
Near the edge of your vision, a slender figure glides into focus, standing
slightly taller than your average male human. A thin, wiry frame is covered
in a vast collection of ornate trinkets and baubles, completing the visage of
someone who is well travelled. His brows seem to be set in a permanent
furrowed position, high above pale blue eyes peering out with a stoic glare.
His ears are pointed at the top providing a strong case to note him as one of
elven kind. Though not as pale as you would expect with an elf, his fair skin
is unblemished save only his hands, crowned with flattened knuckles dressed
lightly with several linear notched scars. His long fingers round a rather
large palm which appear to be quite firm, typically the result of long hours
doing repetitive actions. Long, silver hair streams across nimble shoulders,
entombed in weathered armor with a strong scent of tobacco wafting from his
direction.
Role
Words Are Not Enough
Added Thu Dec 26 22:40:55 2024 at level 1:
Dalanthilios Andarenall is a high elf of humble origins. He has no great
lineage to speak of nor any wealth to envy nor reputation to regale. He is,
as some would say, an elf of little stature. His birth came with little
fanfare as he is the 3rd in a household of five children. His father,
Daranilius, was a cook for a high lord to an estate south of Darsylon, near
Tir-Talath, and maintained that role for a long number of years. His mother,
Allania, was a common homemaker who was deeply involved with her
spirituality. She was a fervent believer and would spend what little extra
resources she had, be it time or gold, in service of the Spearmaiden.
Her devout nature shaped much of Dalanthilios' early years, as she believed
that spiritual discipline and the structured life of a monk would forge her
children into resilient individuals. In truth, she was far more concerned
about making sure they had a way to survive and that they did not wind up as
some street rat. She knew if they were able to handle the strict standards of
the monastery, one of them might become something more like a paladin. She
greatly admired paladins and passed on that respect to her progeny with such
influence that Dalanthilios had seriously considered a life as a holy knight
to appease her. Should any of her children choose such a path, Allania knew
that the opportunities to do other things would be greatly amplified if the
name of their family was tied to good deeds. She held a fierce belief that
faith alone was not enough to produce good karma in one's life, she
believed that faith must be married with good works as the expression of that
faith. And so, she imparted into all of her children the expectation that
words are not enough. There must be action, and that action must be
deliberate and purposeful.
A Mother's Wish
Added Thu Dec 26 22:43:15 2024 at level 1:
To My Dear Son,
I hope this missive finds you well. I have heard that the
monastery might be closing a little sooner this summer as everyone is saying
fall will start earlier than we expected. There is a significant harvest we
will need to manage. All good news for your father I suppose as you know how
much he enjoys seeing what he is going to be cooking in the coming months.
We are going to need your help again pickling up all those cucumbers and
cabbage. The last batch you made was better than what I taught you to make so
I'd rather let you keep doing it. It is good for you to learn these things
so you can take care of yourself.
I wanted to let you know that your brother, Dalanthan, is being seriously
considered for a position to the south. You might want to send him a missive
and reach out to find out how you might be able to follow him. I know you
haven't felt at ease with your decision to stick with monkhood, but I
promise you that this is the best decision for you. Stick with it and
you will be home soon enough.
May the Spearmaiden guide you to your righteous path,
Mother

Dalanthilios,
Your mother is sick and it is very serious. You must return home immediately.
Please share this with the head of your monastery. They will understand the
sense of urgency. Come home.

Notice
Added Thu Dec 26 22:45:05 2024 at level 1:
To Brother Solantura,
I'm afraid I have some sudden and terrible news: my mother has passed onto
the next world. No one anticipated her falling ill so quickly and now while I
deal with her loss, I must also make some important decisions. My father has
shared with me his wishes for me to stay and help him in the kitchen. His
desire is to mold me into the head cook and refine my skills with the knife.
I do not know what to do so I am going to listen to my father and remain in
his stead.
I wanted to thank you for all you have done for me. I will not forget all the
hours you spent with me honing my skills with my fists. I will not forget
them nor all the wisdom you passed down through your lessons, teaching me the
code and how to live by it. I am truly at a loss for words to explain the
gravity of your influence in my life. I only hope to put it forward as you
have always told me.
Dalanthilios Andarenall
No Waste
Added Thu Dec 26 22:45:52 2024 at level 1:
With such a sudden change, Dalanthilios still deep in his grief as young elf,
poured himself into the kitchen. It was clear to everyone around him that the
loss of his mother was ever present as they noticed a once cheery child
turned into a serious adolescent. He would follow his father's instructions
to the extreme to ensure that he show to his father what he felt would honor
him in life. He took part in every need of the kitchen and was never shy
about doing all the menial tasks. Constantly seeking to better himself at
anything he did, Dalanthilios began to appreciate the artistry when crafting
a meal with his father. He saw the attention to detail with their knife work
as they would butcher a cow. He started to understand anatomy in all living
things and how to recognize muscle from fat. He could see where it became
easiest to trim and cut apart. Carcass after carcass, Dalanthilios slowly
started to master making precise incisions where there was no wasted
movement. Every stroke was filled with purpose and every movement built upon
the next to dissect it into exact cuts, leaving no waste.
Motivations
Added Thu Dec 26 22:48:16 2024 at level 1:
There are several important things to note regarding this elf:
1) Several years after his mother passed, his father would soon follow in a
tragic fire while in the kitchen. The blaze had started in the stables
adjacent to the kitchen and Daranilius attempted to save what he could and
went into the fire. He was never seen again as the fire consumed everything.
2) He was offered a position to stay with the High Lord but decided that
going on his own away from his siblings would be the best way for him to
figure out what he truly wanted. He knows that he wants to honor the memory
of his mother by gaining an audience with the Spearmaiden. He hopes that she
may glean some guidance on his future.
3) The trauma of losing his father in the fire has pushed Dalanthilios to
severe pathological fear of fire. In his limited research and knowledge of
the lands, he has heard of the Maran and their ability to heal from the touch
of fire. He intends to find them and learn more about their affinity for fire
in the hopes that he finds a way to protect himself from the same fate as his
father. For this reason, he can no longer stand long hours near an oven and
that was the primary reason for his decision to move on from stewardship as a
chef.
4) Seeing that he can no longer continue his path as a monk nor cook,
Dalanthilios will see how his wits measure in the warrior guild. He expects
that some of his knife experience in the kitchen will translate over to
combat as his intention is to master the dagger. Afterwards should fate
allow, he hopes to then master the art of brawling as that most closely
resembles the combat training he endured during his time at the monastery,
another homage he hopes to execute in the coming years.
A Process
Added Thu Jan 2 01:31:16 2025 at level 29:
Just as he had poured himself into cooking after the passing of his mother,
Dalanthilios immersed himself within his chosen guild to the fullest. He
continues to accrue new skills to such a degree that he has been happily
surprised at what he has been taught by his guild masters. He intends to
master them all as he also recognizes that he is not quite as hearty as
others and thus must be more prepared than his foes. Thus, he has remained
quite careful in his approaches when going on hunts. He knows time is the
true measure of what one accomplishes, and he has learned much of the
potential in the later ranks of the guild. He knows he must be patient, both
in his training and in his hunt. He knows he must become bloodied to truly
understand combat and the measure to do so with purpose. All things that he
also knows will come to him in time though he badly wishes immediate results.
Perhaps it is more to numb him from the memory of his mother and father.
Every time he touches the hilts of his daggers, Dalanthilios remembers deeply
the love he received. And so, he knows to honor them, he must continue and
remain steadfast on his journey.
New Habits
Added Tue Jan 14 16:30:39 2025 at level 35:
Through long hours of training and fighting in battles, Dalanthilios has
achieved full mastery of all the weapons of his guild and is close to doing
same with the dagger specific skills. He has developed a habit of learning
new talents at a rapid rate and intends to master anything he is able to as
he sees the benefit of dedicating oneself to their craft. He sees how hard
work can produce results that one can rely upon.
He has been bloodied and understands what it takes to fall an opponent.
He understands how a well-manicured fight is all about preparation and
knowing when to strike. At which point, what are the maneuvers needed
to change the tide of the battle in one's favor and how effectively can they
be executed. What Dalanthilios understands above all is that precision and
purpose are key in execution. So long as the commitment remains steadfast,
all the training and groundwork done provides the foundation from which all
other measures can be achieved. There is no success with complete chaos.
Dalanthilios has also found a new habit with the pipe and finds some moments
of short distraction when the still of Thera overcomes him. He thinks of his
family often and hopes that his brief achievements are satisfactory. He knows
he must still try to join the Fortress and he knows he will in time. Just as he knows
he will meet Baerinika in time. He believes if he shows his dedication to them, in
time, his efforts will be recognized in some manner. He knows once that happens
then he has fulfilled some wish of his mother in being intermingled with the divine.
An Unheralded Meeting
Added Wed Jan 15 22:55:08 2025 at level 36:
Dalanthilios has fulfilled one of his mother's wishes in that he has met
the Spearmaiden and seen with his own eyes the very being that was once
thought of as legend. Nervous with fear and anxious with wonder, Dalanthilios
had a brief conversation with Baerinika regarding his intentions and his path
moving forward. In her words, she told him that if he wished to walk this
path that she would walk it beside him. And in the end, he was given the
title of Initiate to announce to all of Thera of his devotion to the
Spearmaiden. He is going over the conversation again and again in his head,
replaying every word that he remembers. One particular item was a word of
encouragement from Baerinika to give some hard consideration into how to make
his intentions deeper and more actionable. He believes he must devise a
system on how to approach combat. He is scripting some guidelines so that he
might be better prepared. He also knows that he must become more
knowledgeable in the gifts that Thera has to offer that might aid in
protection or otherwise.
Induction
Added Thu Jan 16 13:31:29 2025 at level 38:
With the Marshall role being assumed by the holy knight, Bognor, Dalanthilios
gained entrance into the Fortress near Voralian as a squire. He has been
informed that he is in an initiation period where his actions and deeds will
be measured over time to determine if he is fit to hold the title of Maran.
Dalanthilios sees immense value in combining the skills he has learned in the
warrior guild and aligning them with the mission of the Fortress. For
Dalanthilios, he feels a connection to his father in some regard. He has
learned rather quickly that the Maran possess abilities that protect them
from the touch of flame. Dalanthilios figures that over time, he will show
his mettle and that the secrets of the Maran will be revealed once he is
ready. And then at that time, he will understand how the flames will no
longer scorch him. If such is the case, he sees that all who fear fire and
walk with goodness maybe find the same salvation he seeks. And then maybe, he
can prevent such a tragedy as befell his own father.
Rules for Combat
Added Thu Jan 16 13:32:38 2025 at level 38:
1. Think ahead. Do not rely solely on instinct.
2. Be prepared to engage at full strength.
3. Initiate the fight when prepared.
4. Have a strategy for every sequence of moves you need to defeat your opponent.
5. Identify weaknesses to exploit them to your advantage and strengths to manage
around so that they are less impactful.
6. Never stay for a fight that you did not initiate as you may not be prepared to engage.
7. If you are unable to turn the tide, you must wait for the right moment to strike.
8. Do not strike aimlessly and be wise in your selection of battles as some fights must
be fought upon more even ground whereas some fights must be fought regardless.
9. Do not die without purpose. Make each death impactful if you must shed your own
blood.
10. Make them regret meeting you.
The Path Forward
Added Sun Jan 26 14:17:03 2025 at level 51:
Dalanthilios has reached the pinnacle of the warrior guild and upon his way
to that achievement, he acquired another specialization in which he has moved
forward as planned with mastery of the hands. He has slowly mastered each
skill though much slower than when he was younger. Dalanthilios recognizes
that the duties to Baerinika and to the Fortress demand great attention at
times and so he is still learning to balance his growth with his
responsibilities. He understands this is part of the burden and acknowledges
opportunities for him to find success.
He has also learned the ways of the Macalla and has chosen two legacies that
have had profound impact on Dalanthilios abilities to engage the enemy. With
Striking the Shadows Footfall, Dalanthilios is now able to engage the enemy
and retreat knowing that he can gain better understanding with each fight.
Flow of Shadows allows him to avoid major movements and abilities to such a
degree that he believes he understands it better than most. He hopes to one
day get a better grasp of its mysteries, perhaps on his travels such
opportunities will present themselves with serendipity.
He has learned much on the battlefield. His opponents change constantly as he
remains a desirable target for some. Though many are learning that there is
far more than they see with this particular elf. He feels though he is making
progress, but not enough to consider himself a Maran. He believes that in due
time, wisdom will be gained and what shall happen shall occur. In some sense,
he sees his future very much solidified.
A Little More Interesting
Added Sun Feb 16 21:44:06 2025 at level 51:
For many days and nights, Dalanthilios had fought against numerous foes of
darkness throughout Thera. He had lost enough vitality to know the taste of
loss. He had also had his own share of success as his enemies knew full well
the extent of his fury. And though Dalanthilios desired more than anything to
be recognized for his efforts, he never fully saw that he would one day
become worthy and deemed a member of the Holy Brigade of the Phoenix.
And then on a recent day, the Watcher requested his presence and inquired of
him when he arrived, "In your squire hood, what lesson has had the greatest
impact on you?"
Dalanthilios responded, "I would say dedication to the path for it is long
and arduous. But it is worth it if you stay true to who you are. For I know,
I have tried my hardest."
"Do you believe yourself ready to wear a Maran's mantle?" retorted the
Watcher.
With a pause for thought, Dalanthilios replied, "I believe I have shed
blood like all the Maran before me. I do not believe I am any more or less
than they are for I have always believed I am a Maran. With or without the
title."
The Watcher nodded grimly as a serious mood overcame his face as he blessed
Dalanthilios with entrance into the ranks of the bloodied and honored. The
mantle of phoenix able to protect him from the fires that have long haunted
his memory. He has found resolution in so many forms: his father's tragedy,
his mother's wish and Baerinika's guidance. He knows he is walking the
right path and that for him is what is most gratifying. It is the path, not
the destination as he realizes that's where the important things are.
