Role
The Call of Duty
Added Thu Dec 6 17:30:51 2007 at level 51:
In a whirlwind of events the former Captain, Niheriva, relinquished his
position and retired from active duty. Before the Fortress had time to
catch its breath the Spirit of the Jaguar unveiled her glorious presence
to them, and posed a question to Darascus. She sought him as the new
Captain, and though she did not think his answer was, at first, too
enthusiastic, she did appoint him. Of course, the answer he gave had the
tone of all the Archon's disciples - one of humility.
Though he finds himself treated somewhat differently than before, Darascus
has been trying to behave as he always has. But, things change upon being
appointed to such a role, and he is adapting as well as one can. The ones
he has long fought beside may never see a change, but for those who are
new to the ranks of the Brigade, they will likely encounter a Captain who
may seem less hospitable at first. Why? It is because he has seen many
willing, yet undisciplined individuals suffer as a result of their choice
to heed the call. He sees the Brigade as the premiere fighting force in
Thera, and strives to strengthen those who need it, and direct those who
have proved themselves.
As always, he keeps his faith very close to everything he does. It is the
trinity of protection, mercy, and dedication that truly defines the man.
Protection of the innocent, as well as the integrity of the Fortress.
Mercy for those who don't deserve it, in some form or another, as well as
for those who heed the call to war and fall short. Above all, dedication
to his purpose in life, which he has found as the Captain of the Brigade.
The Veteran Battlemage
Added Fri Nov 16 18:03:40 2007 at level 51:
Darascus has seen many good souls come and go, and has seen a common thread
of weaknesses among most of them. Having spent a lifetime utterly dedicated
to his faith, his creed, and his magic, he cannot help but try to improve
upon others as he has improved on his craft. Sometimes he is certain others
think he is harsh, but he knows he is working for a greater good and that it
will be appreciated in time.
With the onset of age he has become as weathered as the walls of the Fortress
and speaks with militant force, interspersed with humor when he feels the
urge for it. To someone who does not know him, his would be a frightful face
to behold...but worry not, it is just the face of a veteran Maran - tempered
by war.
Enlightenment
Added Thu Nov 1 02:07:24 2007 at level 41:
It was just as Darascus left his youth behind him that the Lord of Archons
first spoke - and the effect was profound. Indeed, if it could be said that
his life was akin to the surface of a pond, the words uttered by Corrlaan
on that day were as a stone dropped into it from a dizzying height. Ripples
and waves of thought, hope and reverence surged out from the epicenter of
the enlightenment. When it was done, Darascus knew that his purpose in life
was known to both he and his God. All that lacked, even in the slightest,
was absolute clarity about how he would achieve his goals. And so, knowing
now what he needed to obtain true self-actualization, he set out, determined
to become a full-fledged Maran.
Years passed and Darascus aged slowly, blessed with vigorous elven blood.
he refined his art more and more, steadily becoming masterful to the point
of being utterly artistic and innovative with his magic. He visualized the
ancient and benevolent masters of his craft that dwelled in ancient times -
Felgaire the Wavemaster, Gherian the Iron Adept, and others more obscure.
If these brave warriors of the Light could do it, so could he. And he
felt, and still feels, a desire to impress them as they view the world from
the Azure Fields.
And then came the day when Darascus the Squire was no more. In his place
arose a Maran wizard - a sight that conjures forth visions of a golden age
when magic itself was guarded by the Light. He felt proud, not in the way
of a man who does a thing to gloat and hold it over others as a means to
symbolize his greater worth...no, he felt proud that he had followed
through on the goals he set so long ago. He felt that his mother and
father would approve of all his effort. But what was next?
Whatever comes next is no part of Darascus' plans, and he does not wish to
set up a grand scheme for the way his life should flow. At this point he
knows that he will be made stronger and more complete by learning to adapt
and improvise in a realm that is chaotic - for it is truly a world at war.
Fulfilling Destiny
Added Mon Oct 8 20:00:19 2007 at level 37:
After earning the favor of the Holy Brigade of the Phoenix and being appointed
as a Squire, Darascus has grown both in wisdom and talent. He has seen the
hosts of his enemies numerous times, as they massed assaults upon the Fortress
of Light, which has further enforced the notion that the Scions of the Eternal
Night are a tremendous threat. Yet, in their pride Darascus sees a great weak-
ness to be exploited. He knows well that they will not consider him a threat,
as it is their way to mock those they would make war with. But, he knows he
will be quite a challenge for them in the coming years. To this end he has
spurred his training to a grueling pace, dedicating himself fully to the
idea that the taint of evil's rule over the arcane must be put to an end. In
his eyes, evil deeds, not magic, have made most of the world mistrustful of
wizards.
Of course, a desire to cleanse the fell sorcerers is not his only defining
characteristic. Wickedness is all around, and with the blessings of the
Lord of Archons he always seeks the wisdom to recognize it and mend it before
war is called for.
The Effect of Faith
Added Mon Oct 1 17:01:03 2007 at level 20:
It was several years after Darascus' premature exit from the High Tower,
and for once the choice to leave had been his own. He continued his studies
in Galadon, but something was missing there. He felt corruption in that
place as though it were a toxic smog in the air. It wasn't as bad as
the "desert jewel", Hamsah Mu'tazz, where ancient evil bled up from foul
places beneath the flagstone streets and vile deeds were common place.
Still, he felt saturated by the taint. He sought for a way out.
He took up work with the lumberyard foreman in order to gain enough money
to make the move to his homeland of Voralia. If any place still held the
goodness that he so yearned for, he would certainly find it in that most
virtuous of places. Embarking on a wagon caravan, Darascus found himself
fortunate enough to be in the company of a priest of Corrlaan. The man
was young, and yet everything he said was full of conviction. Each word
seemed to hold the same weight as laws set in stone. He did not push
his belief upon Darascus, but over the course of their voyage he had
heard everything. Darascus felt his course, which had always pointed in
a particular direction, had become even more solidified. Before he knew
if he really believed in this so-called Lord of Archons, he was praying
to him.
___________________________________________________________________________
Darascus, now quite a few years older and strong in his faith, seeks the
way of peace foremost, but realizes that some are called upon to fight for
the side of goodness. He feels that he is one of these people, and was
given arcane talent so that he could aid in realizing the dream of a better
tomorrow. With this in mind, it is important to note that he will try to
warn the wicked of their crimes against the world (and impending punishment)
before resorting to violence. Darascus also makes a point to treat fallen
foes with as much gentleness as possible, for he knows there would be little
hope that they would learn to mend their wrong-doings if their minds were
clouded with further hatred. The sinners must be shown the kindness that they
have never known, even in their darkest hours. In his mind only a rare few
are ever truly "damned." Liches, anti-paladins and their ilk have done deeds
so vile that until they seek redemption from the Elder Gods they can know
no peace in life.
He believes his purpose, which is a crucial aspect to gaining Clarity, is
to earn a place within the Holy Brigade of the Phoenix. The goal? To fight
with mind and body, soul and sorcery, for the hope of a brighter future.
Dreams Change & Stay the Same
Added Sat Sep 29 01:48:07 2007 at level 20:
Almost every time Darascus thinks about his youth, the memories begin
with an image that he saw every morning, noon and night for years. It
was the face of an angel, a woman...a tapestry adorning the Chapel
within the Keep of the Righteous. He remembered it well because the
angel was identical to his mother. Long, golden hair and eyes the
color of Feanwyn moss. A righteous creature of beauty and justice -
virtue and love. He wondered often if Gharis had made the image look
like her intentionally. He was, after all, her oldest friend and might
have even been her husband one day, but duty called him to that place
and there was no time in his life for companionship of that sort. It
was Gharis' sacrifice to serve the Keep.
Darascus was too young to begin martial training when he first arrived,
but he strenghtened his soul through the teachings of Phacia and the
other ascetics, and honed his mind with the riddles of wise old Darius.
He was never, and never would be as strong as most of the other boys who
had come (or been sent) to train there. But he was strong enough, quick
enough, and most importantly wise enough to know how to utilize his
strengths and find the flaws no matter how well hidden they were. Wisdom,
as it were, would come to be something Darascus would seek all of his
life.
At one point Darascus had advanced to the head of his young peers in
battle, and was allowed to spar against the more experienced students
who were on the verge of gaining their knighthoods. He came against
some truly stiff competition during his last match, against a boy who
had repeatedly been scolded for making too much contact with the
practice weapons. At one point the boy cross-down parried Darascus'
mace and closed in with a vicious head butt. Before he knew what was
happening, Darascus felt a tingle in his shoulder which quickly spread
to his arm, and then to his hand, and finally into his mace. With a
cry of outrage he swung his weapon towards the bully and struck his
shoulder-guard. A blinding white light split the twilight as an arcane
charge arced from Darascus' mace, through the metal armor, and into
his opponent.
The bully did not die, but he came close. Nowadays he carries a distinct
streak of white in his hair. Surprisingly, it was old Darius who got to
the scene first, shouting, "I knew it! I knew it, Gharis! This boy has
got the spark!" Gharis came shortly after, along with the rest of the
Keep's inhabitants.
"Boy, what have you done?!" shouted Gharis, but as soon as he had said
the words he regretted them. Young Darascus was hovering over the other
boy, who lay unconscious, repeating the phrase, "This I count among my
sins. This I count among my sins. This I count..." So horrified was he
at the damage he had done.
After tending to the wounded youth, Darius spoke at length with Gharis,
explaining that he had long suspected Darascus' hidden talent. He feared
they would have to send him away due to the Keep's relations with Thrym
and his warrior students. They would defend Darascus to the last man, if
it came to war with the old berserker, but they had the care of many lives
in their hands and it would not be right to allow such a potential danger
to go unchecked. Darascus would have to be sent away for the second time.

Lessons & Sacrifice

thin the Voralian Order, and he,
trained in Darsylon in ways which were as old and sacrosanct as
the stars. Their romance lasted less than fifteen years. In
that time young Darascus was immersed in the words of the Holy,
and could recite the Paladin's Code almost as soon as he could
speak.
His deepest, most sincere desire was to follow in his parent's
footsteps and become a Paladin himself. But fate had a twist in
store for this dutiful son...
_________________________________________________________________
The orcs had surged again, and this time not according to the
predictions of the Order, and so the outlying provinces of
Voralia were taken by surprise. The orcs had no chance of ever
overrunning the city itself, but the subtleties of warfare were
not completely unknown to the foul beasts. They knew, for example,
that Voralia had a few lifelines, and if they squeezed the right
spot for long enough, it would wither and die as surely as a
starved man might.
Under a new Chieftain, the Grinning Skulls fought as though the
twelve fiends were at their backs, and for the first time in
Darascus' short life the city gates had to be closed in broad
daylight. Messengers flew by the score up and down the river,
and once again it was Darsylon that heeded the call for aid.
Darascus' father returned from his post there and joined his
mother in the effort. It was valiant...worthy of a song, and
the horde was driven back.
But, war always taxes the people more than any ruler ever could,
and the payment was meted in blood as well as coin. In this war,
it was the blood of Darascus' family that paid for Voralia's
safety. "Duty" was what it was called, and the orphan son of the
valiant pair remembered what that meant as surely as he remembered
the Code.
He had nowhere to go but to the place where his godfather, Gharis,
lived - The Keep of the Righteous.
