You see a male arial before you. Thick muscles run across his form, which stretches past seven feet in height. Wings arch out from his back, each as long as he is tall. Feathers the color of ice start at his beak and continue down his neck and chest. The coloring darkens into the color of clear water on his shoulders and the rest of his body except for an alternating pattern of white and vibrant blue on his wings. Long and narrow, his beak is prominent on his face while sharp talons show clearly on his feet. Dark black eyes look about with a mark of interest. The faint smell of saltwater follows him. Dorinin stretched his white wings to their full span, raising and streching
his arms as well.  Combat was starting to take its toll on him, old wounds
aching to let him know he still lived.  He had always enjoyed his station as
a palace guard in Arial City, but he was starting to want more out of life. 
If only he knew what it was.  There was always one or two of the new guards
that would tell him that perhaps it was time for him to retire.  After they
fell to his practice swords, they stopped talking though.

A grin had start to split his face, thinking of the new guards learning their
lessons when she passed by him.  A beautiful arial, she was not that much
younger than him but she took his breath away.  She wore the uniform of a
maid, though he did not recognize her.  Without knowing it, his grin had
widened into a smile that split his face and he motioned for the other guard
on duty to cover him before walking up to her.

Kimatha

Kimatha was thankful for her deep blue feathers around her face, as it hid
the deep blush as the arial guard approached her with a smile on his face. 
It was her first day as a maid, and she was wary of making a mistake in front
of the first maid in front of her.  She kept her eyes down as he tried to
talk to her, and walked away at the brisk pace of the first maid.  He
followed, starting to make a scene and demanded her name.  She turned her
head and said 'Kimatha' before hurrying to keep her pace to the first maid.

When she was done with her first day, she was exhausted and ready to sleep as
she walked out of the palace.  He was leaning against the wall, waiting for
her.  She truly was able to look him in the eyes for the first time, and she
never looked at him again without love in her eyes.  All of the hurt she had
ever suffered, to leave her so beautiful yet alone this late in her life was
gone.  They met every day, until two months later they were married.

Innaken

Innaken was born just a year after his parents were married.  He never knew
the life of Arial City, as he was born in a small cave high in the side of
Kiadana.  He took after his father in build, tall and well muscled but kept
his mother's agility in the sky.  It was all his parents could do to keep an
eye on him, as he took to the sky at a very young age.  He especially took to
flying along the seas, flying just above the water while dragging his feet.

His parents spoke very little of their past life, beyond they once lived and
worked in Arial City.  This was never enough for Innaken, and once he did
worm out that his father was once a guard he took up the blade.  His father
was a strict teacher, guiding him as much in when and why to use a sword as
to how to use one.  His mother always avoided the past, only telling him of
how she met his father.

For his fifteenth name day, he begged his parents to take a trip with him to
their home town of Arial City.  They finally gave in, though reluctacly and
they ventured to Arial City together.  As he rose from taking a drink in the
central fountain, he saw a beautiful young female arial.  Without thinking, 
he walked to her and introduced himself.  A little ways away, his mother and 
father smiled knowingly.

Shaile

Shaile looked up from filling her bucket with water, as a young male came and
introduced himself as Innaken.  She looked him over in irritation, needing to
be about her chores quickly or be punished by the invoker guildmaster.  A wry
smile comes across her face as she tells him 'I am Shaile, but I do not have
time to talk as I am supposed to be fetching water'.  She begins to walk off,
waiting to see if the line had been set.  He hurried after her, taking the
bucket from her hand and insisting he help her.  As they turn into a yard
behind the Invoker's guild, she grins as he sees the forty or so empty
buckets on the ground.  She expects him to abandon her to her chores and
leave, but instead he says 'This should take very little time' as he puts
down the full bucket and picks up two empty ones.

She walks with him as he makes trips back and forth, losing track of time as
they lose themselves in conversation.  The sun starts to fall as he sets down
the last two buckets.  A guildmaster calls from a balcony above 'Well now
that he has done all of them, it is your turn to actually do your chores'. 
She squeeks in surprise, and starts to run off.  She turns and pecks his
cheek, telling him to come visit her more before running to obey her
guildmaster.

Storm

As Innaken met back with his parents, their big grins led to innocent
mockings as they headed home.  He did not care, and was elated as they flew
back home.  He convinced his parents to venture to Arial City more often, and
every couple of months he would go back with his parents to meet Shaile. 
They were young and taking it slowly, but both of his parents could see the
start of love.

Returning from a visit just six months after meeting Shaile, they were now
officially dating.  He and his parents had met with her and her parents, and
all had left happy.  He was elated, dancing through the air as they flew
home.  As they were traveling over the aryth ocean, a sudden storm came. 
They sped up trying to find a place to sit the storm out when a flash of
light filled his eyes.  His ears heard a sudden boom before all sound fled.
He last saw spots dance in his vision before he was swallowed by the sea.

He wakes in a cave, the waves splashing against his talons.  His body aches
everywhere while his head pounds a steady rhythm.  He begins to crawl out of
the ocean, one last wave splashing against him though instead of cooling or
harming it feels almost like a caress.  He crawls to the back of the cave and
onto a mountain, before sleep takes him again.

Zhondare

The butt of a spear jabs into my side, jolting me awake.  My eyes open,
seeing a man clad in desert colors looking at me with interest.  As the butt
comes near me again, I spins away taking to the sky just above the man.  How
did I do that?  No time to think about that right now.  The man simply
shrugs, and removes the cloth in front of his face.  He says 'I was going to
help you up, but' then shrugged.  He then said 'I am Zhondare'.  I look back
at him, and say 'My name is' and then pause.  What is my name?  I continue by
saying 'well, I am not sure'.  He nods, then beckons for me to follow him.

As we travel back, I tell Zhondare of a bright light and boom before washing
ashore.  He nods, apparently a man of few words.  We reach a camp, where I am
given something to eat and introduced as 'a water blessed arial'.

I spent the next few months recovering, though I had remarkably no serious
injuries.  Zhondare continue to say little while showing me the ways of the
desert that I stay in.  He teaches me to find water and hunt with a spear,
though none of it comes naturally to me.  I notice my own calloused hands and
know they must be used to handling something rough.  There are several men
who use scimitars, and after trying one and I find that I can fight with it
as if born with it in my hands.  How can this be?

Darikir

Zhondare finally decides I must have a name, and begins calling me 'Darikir'.
Knowing no better alternative, I accept the name from a mentor to a student
with honor.  I do not know if it has a meaning, but I am not sure he would
tell me if it does.  I find myself missing something at times, but not
knowing what it is I am missing.  I can learn quickly, yet I find myself
lacking something in not knowing who I a truly am.  

The camp healer seems to have little to offer in ways to heal me, so I leave
with a fond farewell from Zhondare.  I wander from forest to town, seeking
the aid of druids and healers without any of them succeeding.  None of them
can return my memories to me.  Always I am drawn back to rest near water,
finding a calming presence from it.

Memories

At last, a healer recommended that I seek out the Lady of the Purple Lotus. 
After searching Thera for her Bathhouse, I found it and was granted an
audience.  I was overwhelmed with her beauty and kindness, as we discussed
the little I knew about the events leading to the loss of my memories.  As
stories told of her, she has such a remarkable gift of healing that I knew
she could restore me.  I told of the stored up emotions, the pain I felt
without knowing why.  She told me that she would think of ways to heal me,
but I might have to come to terms with never regaining my memories.  I tried
to keep a stoic face, but I left crushed inside.  If the most talented healer
who has become a God could not easily do it, could it even be done?

I had heard that it is possible to regain memories slowly, but this felt like
it would of happened by now if it was going to.  Then I met with someone who
said that we had probably known each other in Arial City, and without any
thought I responded that I hadn't spent much time there as a child.  A memory
had returned, surely they all would start coming back now.  Yet as the weeks
went on, no more came.  I started to accept I might have to come to terms
with only being who I currently am.

But how could I come to terms without knowing who I was?  Who was I now?  An
arial training with warriors, with no direction in life?  I sought comfort in
exhaustion and mindlessness, and found both in training myself.  The training
felt familiar and that was comfort and pain at the same time.  I found myself
forced out of training and to ground in Arial City to avoiding the attention
of a rather brutish giant.  All of these faces, so much like mine yet none
knew me as that lone memory knew they wouldn't.  I felt anxiety at having
time to think again, and was flustered until I decided to train with the
warriors paid to be guards.  Yet as one fell, he shrieked Kinslayer.  They
did not feel like my kin, they did not know me, yet they thought of me as
such?  I stopped as I realized they did not deserve this and felt shame at my
ignorance.  How many of my actions would be better guided if I just knew who
I had been?  Or would they be worse?

Memories Regained

While embraced with unending love at the Bathhouse, I finally gained the
strength to let myself remember.  The Lady of the Purple Lotus had shown me
the way to my memories weeks ago, yet I had hesitated with fear.  I let
myself focus on the love I felt inside and saw the faces of my parents.  The
shock of doing this alone, led me to mindlessly lay down and sleep for a
while.  I knew after waking up, I could not do this alone.  I came to her,
the one I have grown to love as a mother and friend, to remember it all.  

The memories came to me in torrents with pauses that felt like the eye of the
storm.  Tears leaked from my eyes, but I felt no shame while in her company. 
First the love for my parents came, then the lightning strike and their
almost unquestioned deaths.  A torrent raged through my mind as my history
with them flooded into me.  Suddenly I knew who I had been, named Innaken by
my parents.  Was I still Innaken?  As I started to feel at peace, I still
felt like I was missing something.  I felt like there was still love in me
that had not surfaced.  Focusing on that love, I remembered Shaile.  I had
spent time in Arial City, yet I can not remember seeing her.  Where was she? 
A feeling of doubt crept through me as I wondered, would she still love me?

My Lady explained the crossroads that I was at, of the choices Shaile might
bring up in me and my Lady's faith in me.  I could not answer any of these
questions yet, as my mind began to solely focus on finding Shaile.  I
sprinted to Arial City, letting those that would distract me run and lick
their wounds while I tried to focus on what was important.  I screamed for
her in the city, but received no response.  I went to the invoker guild,
knowing she should have quarters inside.  The guardian sneered and would
share nothing, so he was struck down in my haste to find out more.  The
guildmaster seemed to wish to share nothing, but finally motioned for me to
step closer and whispered her fate.  He said that Arial City mages had become
complacent, with so few of those from the horrid village to the south unable
to climb or fly to it.  A young arial assassin had came a few days after I
had left and slipped his blade into her heart.  No one at the town square had
noticed, until he started to descrate her body and make a trophy that he
eagerly donned.  As people began shouting for the guard, he slipped into the
shadows and disappeared.  Tears began to fall from my eyes again, though I
did not notice.  I asked him if he was sure, and he nodded.  Her parents had
left the city shortly after the funeral, wishing to live far away from a
world that could do this.  I felt thunderstruck, as I began to realize that
this was why the guard to the guild has been so unwilling to give
information.  He was simply trying to protect his guild from his own kin.  I
apologized to the guildmaster as I left, a slow and steady anger deep inside
me.

Strong Memories

Creaks and pain ran across my body as I glided to the ground in the pool of
the Isle.  It had been too long since I had truly rested and reflected, and
it showed in the memories that had grown dim.  This discontented me even
further, my own body already having slowed and weakened compared to those of
my kin in their prime.  Would my body's betrayals ever stop?

I let this frustration leave me, instead thinking on the strongest memories
in my life.  My Lady joining me to the Isle herself, my first real home.  The
return of memories from my old life with my Lady there to comfort me.  The
discussions with her on water, and the time she laid her fingers on my wrist
and marked me as one of her chosen.  Words fail to describe the torrent of
emotions that I felt, but I can clearly remember a feeling of being loved and
of having another place to call home.  Fighting with allies by my side, a few
even now close friends.  The gifts my Lady bestowed me, more than I could
have ever hoped for.

Yet not all memories were pleasant, as the thoughts of betrayal in Iklahn's
eyes still brought shame to my heart.  Younger and foolish, I had not seen
being used until it was far too late.  The goal seemed so simple at the time,
to find a longer life to serve the balance.  He has already had how many
years with my Lady and the Isle?  It did not seem fair, and still doesn't at
times.  I was a babe when he was already favored to well on the way to the
grave and him still well favored.  How does one compete with that, when it
seems my Lady becomes less mine and more his while trying?  How I tried did
not work, but I am not sure any tactic would have.  I am not sure it should
have..

A sigh escapes my beak as a spasm of pain in my wings brings me to the
present.  I have made peace with growing older, but truly wished my body to
be as strong as quick as it once was until I finally took to the deep
slumber.  For now I put thoughts of my past and future behind me and focus on
the present, to serve Thera through maintaining the balance.
