Description
The slightly overweight, bald, elderly man here cuts a
less-than-impressive figure. Hunched over slightly at the waist, he moves
with the care one expects from the infirm. He wears the field uniform of the
Voralian militia, stained with dust and strange-looking burns. His gray hair
has been combed over to one side, a futile attempt to hide the vast balding
spot encroaching upon the crown of his head. A hooked, patrician nose gives
him the look of a rather battered hawk. Despite his rough-and-tumble
appearance, his brown eyes sparkle with friendliness, and his weathered face
is thoroughly etched with laugh lines around the mouth and eyes. The glove
of his left hand has had the ring finger stitched up, giving the hand a
lopsided look.

Emergency Recruit Assessment -- Private Davithril Collierson, 4th Militia of
the Triumvirate Compiled by Jolinar, Emissary of the Triumvirate
A late bloomer, this one. Recruited after his elderly patron, a master tinker,
passed into the Light, he is thirty years of age. Does not have the look of a
soldier - nor even one of athletic ability! - but performs surprisingly well
during drills, with quick instincts and reflexes belieing his soft look. As
you can see from his drill assessments (attached below), he excelled in each
with ease. However, it has been noted by no less than three of his instructors
that he does not have the manner of a soldier - asking pointed questions and
debating the morality of certain actions (even in the hypothetical nature of
the assessments!). Further, the first problems of his tinkering came into
light during his initial training, and grew more concerning thereafter.
Constantly distracted by devices, that he carried around with him in a
clanking bag - even on field exercises. Strange glows and sounds coming from
his corner of the barracks at all hours.
But regardless of his previous performance, this emergency assessment has been
triggered by the dreadful event of the Scorching, as the Voralian locals now
refer to it. Private Collierson, by his own admission, was working on a
'Skeleton Scatterer' as he calls it (and he, it must be noted, added a fervent
'For the Light!' after said nomenclature). Carrying an arcane ingredient, of
power he seemed blissfully unaware of - and upon fiddling with it - created an
explosion that near killed two peacekeepers and himself along with it. It left
a scorch mark on the statue of Lady Voralia three feet long, that is still
being furiously scrubbed clean, two weeks later.
Davithril has the Light in his heart. He does not mean harm. But his
experimenting and tinkering has interfered not only with the operation of our
militia, but also put innocent civilians in danger.
Therefore, I must regretfully recommend general separation at this time. Dav
has a place in the Light - but not in this militia.

Thrice failed

*excerpt from the journal of Davrithil Collierson*
I have finally found a home.
When I left the Tower of Sorcery as a failed apprentice mage, my spirits did
dwindle, it is true. But they taught me how to be precise, and to question. I
did not fit in, but these things I learned.
When I found a new apprenticeship as a tinkerer under Master Falstaff, my hope
was renewed. And then he passed away, in that unfortunate experiment. But he
crystallized and valued in me that dangerous curiosity, that had led me to try
to be a mage in the first place.
When I floundered and decided to join the Voralian militia, at the prodding of
my mother (the desperation at her twice failed son bright in her eyes), my
hope was renewed. I told them I'd be a sapper, like my father. But then the
arcane device I had been laboring on blew up in my face. Typical. And left me
wavering between the planes, my condition a mystery even to my old teachers of
the Tower, who were finally fascinated with me. For all the wrong reasons. But
yet, the militia taught me determination, and some martial skills to deploy
alongside my devices.
The one through line has always been my determination to bring Light to the
Dark that breeds in Thera. So why did I not find the Fortress in the first
place?!
They accept my strangeness. They accept that a failed mage, a barely passable
tinkerer, and a discharged soldier can serve the Light. Finally, I feel
welcomed. And valued. I will not spoil this last chance.

Gods below, his back ached!
Davrithil hunched over the many devices scattering his corner of the barracks,
tongue sticking out, as he deftly secured another fuse to the complex
machinery before him, his gnarled hands still holding the same vigor they had
years ago. Satisfied and smiling faintly, he scratched a name into the
scorched contraption: "Snoraloo".
He had found his life's work here in the Fortress: tracking down the evil
bandits of his own guild. Chasing the Snoraloos and Abburths into the hills,
across the fields, until they tired and tried to fight (vainly), or decided a
good nap was in order. When he had first started his journey, many had viewed
him with suspicion. But then they had heard his warnings every time one of the
wretched sneaky folk awoke, and seen him gleefully running them around every
street and corner of Thera. He had even machinated the fall of Vrolah, his
most hated enemy - perhaps the trap he was most proud of.
What was left? To guide the young ones of the Fortress, against the growing
tide of the Empire's might. To teach them how to defend the Fortress, and when
to give chase. He leaned back, his back popping alarmingly but still smiling,
and nodded at the various devices laid out before him. Of course, he still had
many bombs to set off, still. His grin grew wider.
