Role
The Beginning
Added Mon Nov 28 18:12:03 2011 at level 7:
A dank breeze emanated from the darkness as the young Djetmai peered out into
the abyss. His heart raced with a feeling that blurred the boundaries between
joyous anticipation and absolute terror, awaiting this moment that had seemed
as if it would never come. To this point, life had been simple- work the
mines, study with father, prepare for the day when it would finally be time
to leave the cold embrace of the endless stone passageways of the
Underdark.
His ancient ancestors had worked these tunnels, carving out life and wealth
from where there had been nothing but silence and darkness. Now a
civilization thrived, wealth and culture, and an army of soldiers to fight
the forever wars of the surface world, as father had described so vividly.
Djetmai was hardened by a life of physical labor and a regiment of training
that would send most young men fleeing for an easy life of begging on the
streets and lounging in the taverns. His father would go on for hours about
past heroes of war, the theft of magic from the Gods, and the forever wars
that had stretched on from the beginning of time.
Father had said, "Know the enemy, but first know yourself. Before you go
forth into the world, you must have already become a hero in your mind and
thus your body will follow. Only when you know you are ready, strike with
great haste. Catch your enemy unprepared. Be unpredictable, blend with the
shadows, and attack when the enemy has become careless."
At the time, Djetmai did not entirely understand. Now, on this day, it would
seem that all things had new meaning and a great clarity had settled over his
mind. Father had fallen in glorious battle against an army of magi and so
Djetmai's training was, by default, at its end. His muscles were ripped with
the strength of working stone, his mind was sharp and pure from the taints of
magic. He would now ascend into the world and take his place in the forever
wars, for this is what he was born to do- to grow like a fire from the heart
of the earth and to be unleashed on the weak and ill-prepared magicians who
had stolen from the Gods and lost a connection with the purest strengths of
the body and soul.
Djetmai slowly walked down the dark passage until he could make out a faint
light in the distance. He emerged into a mysterious world of bright colors
and open skyline, dancing shadows, glorious smells and strange sounds...and
he immediately felt a calm radiance from within. He was ready to live. He was
ready for war.
Youth: Personality and Beliefs
Added Thu Dec 15 20:29:04 2011 at level 22:
-Djetmai Kataana was raised by his father, a wise and respected assassin with
close ties to the Village. Djetmai was trained to be a highly disciplined
warrior and ultimately a great weapon against all who use magic.
-He was sent to work in the mines at a young age. As his father saw it, this
was a part of his training and also a practical means for income. Early on he
despised the work, which was indeed quite brutal. Over time, he learned to
unearth treasures of immense value, which he would steal at any opportunity.
-Despite his father's attempts to focus solely on the arts of combat and war,
to raise the ultimate soldier, Djetmai could not keep himself away from
distractions of gold and extravagant decorated blades and armors from distant
lands.
-His father was killed by an army of magi (or so he'd been told and which he
believed, as his father was as tough as they came, a hero among assassins,
and a renowned killer of magi), further engraining Djetmai's hatred of magic
on an emotional level.
-Djetmai views magic as a weakness, a sickness even, as a power that was
stolen from the Gods. He would never admit it, even to himself, but at times
he is envious of that power. Just as he himself abandoned the path of the
"pure warrior" in pursuit of forbidden treasures, there is an internal war
that rages within Djetmai. This manifests as an obsession with destroying
magic, almost as if he were at war with a part of himself that might steal
that from the Gods too, if given the chance.
-In many ways, Djetmai remains a warrior at heart and truly wishes to be as
disciplined as his father. Yet there is a part of him that's undeniably drawn
to wealth and all curiosities of the world, even the occasional mayhem for
reasons he cannot explain. The highly disciplined life is something he openly
praises but in reality never seems to be able to maintain.
-He has no understanding of good and bad, in any traditional sense. He is
driven by a desire to excel in combat and a belief that the world is, has,
and always will be in a perpetual state of war. There is no winning or
losing, but rather a constant unfolding of battles. For Djetmai, meaning in
life comes through aligning oneself in a position to succeed in the art of
war, no matter the cause. To be passive is to be swept away by others
battles. Those who are strongest and most disciplined will fight without
magic, and thus are more likely to thrive. As he was raised to do, he has
pledged his life to the Village without question or hesitation.
Maturity: Reflections on Life
Added Wed Jan 4 08:58:49 2012 at level 33:
The late day sun cast long shadows over The Village. Djetmai had spent the
morning honing his skills in a distant monastery, and then happened upon (and
defeated) a particularly elusive and rather surprised shapeshifter as he
returned to The Village, utterly exhausted after being chased across the
lands by the Tribunal. He was ready to rest.
Yet as was so often the case, his mind was restless. To pass the time, he
would tie various knots and experiment with ropes and wires, learning the
intricacies of these tools which, when combined with the proper strategy,
were more useful and deadly than any blades. He often thought about how
impressed his father would be, so focused and disciplined, even if sometimes
falling back to wandering thoughts of treasures and other temptations. He was
strong, scarred by many battles and was finally becoming the mage-killing
weapon that he was raised to be. Amidst the legendary warriors of The
Village, he felt at home.
For Djetmai, to be without a cause, without enemies or ambitions, seemed to
be without meaning, without motivation- an impossible and dull life indeed.
He pondered those that would seek peace, like the monks in the monastery he
so often frequented, and he could only feel confused. Who would want such a
thing- and why? He also considered those who submit to all temptations. How
could one be so weak? As he pondered these thoughts with Commander Akedeh, he
had come to realize that such actions were a sickness.
As Djetmai sees things, conflict is the nature of our (internal and external)
world. The wars of the world reflect our inner minds and they ultimately
define who we are- we must be focused and dedicated if we are to thrive in
the midst of infinite distractions and temptations. We must decide what is
worth fighting for.
For Djetmai, to be a skilled thief who embodies the art of war is the
greatest triumph against temptations (even if one falters to distractions of
material wealth). War nurtures strength in the body, mind, and spirit, and it
leads us toward glorious adventures and well-deserved rewards of treasures
from across the lands (which Djetmai would likely admit only to himself set
his heart aflutter more so than any young woman ever could). To be without
war would be stagnation and surrender to the cruel winds of fate.
Whether intentional or not, the magi had made a declaration of war when they
stole powers that they had neither earned, nor deserved, and thus they were
the enemy. Plain and simple. They were like common greedy thieves (who
Djetmai actually disdained almost as much as the magi) who had focused only
on theft and had thus failed to focus their minds and bodies to become
strong, to realize their true potential. They suffered from an illness that
must be eradicated.
As he grew into maturity, Djetmai knew that he was only beginning- that only
the most disciplined mind would persevere against the challenges ahead.
Reflections: Death and Rage
Added Thu Feb 2 19:40:41 2012 at level 51:
Djetmai sat on the floor of his hut, compulsively tying a series of knots into
a long strand of rope. His mind wandered to the passing of Commander Akedeh
and he immediately felt a familiar flare of rage burning within his chest.
Strange things had been happening as of late, things he could not explain.
He would feel compelled to steal things, often things of little value. And
then once he held them, he no longer wanted them. He was compelled toward
kindness and compassion at one moment, and shortly after would find himself
enraged by the slightest glimpse of the illness. Pure warriors carrying
potions and tainted weapons, the Tribunal swarming to protect the sick ones,
magi running around the lands as if they were kings. It was often a real
challenge for Djetmai to remain faithful to the policies of the Village, to
not strike out at all of them. At times he would lose his focus in the
flames of rage and bloodthirst.
The death of Commander Akedeh had set something off inside of him, no doubt
stirring memories of his fathers death at the hands of the magi. He began to
see the sickness all around him, in the very nature of this society which
seemed to proliferate illness (the Island and the Chasm), protect the sick
and weak (the Tribunal), and empower those who deserved nothing (the Empire).
Warriors and thieves, nearly all outside the Village walls would carry the
taint. Even the Fortress itself would follow behind the leadership of the
infected. It was as if the world were a great conspiracy that was unbearable
and disgusting, as if this world itself was a declaration of war.
Something inside him felt as though he was constantly being torn apart. A
sense of focus on his hatred for the magi, followed by rage and reckless
destruction against those who were in any way associated with the illness.
Moments of clarity, pure focus and determination, and then in a moments
notice all focus was lost and suddenly he was acting out of pure intuition. A
dream of flames.
In that moment, tying knots on the floor of his hut, a memory emerged from
deep within his mind.
His father had once told him, The art of war is in the balance of patience-
and pure spontaneity. Djetmai, your blade should dance like the flames from
the fire!
It was then that Djetmai realized something that now seemed so obvious, yet
that had eluded him for so long- that this focus that he had been seeking, he
had been assuming all along that it was a state of calm awareness, and yet it
now occurred to him that this elusive focus that he was after, the essence of
such was to be found in the chaotic flames of rage itself.
The world was a declaration of war all around him. His mind was a reflection
of warfare. And if it was war they wanted...
A mysterious Lich
Added Sun Mar 18 11:12:20 2012 at level 51:
Perhaps it was his notoriety as the Bandit King, perhaps just a random
occurrence- likely it will never be known why he was chosen. On an otherwise
unremarkable day, a mysterious and powerful Lich approached Djetmai in the
streets of Hamsah, with a strange proposition.
It had occurred to Djetmai to tell the Lich to go straight to hell, as such
creatures epitomize the enemy of the Village. Yet he could not resist hearing
out the creature, wondering what it all meant, and would admit to no one how
truly tempting the offer was.
For all that Djetmai was, in his striving for honor and the resistance of
temptation, he was still a thief at heart, torn by wars that constantly raged
inside and out. He did all that he could to control to follow his father's
teachings, to be a master of war himself and to be nothing like a common
thief or a magi. And yet the promises of immense power were intriguing, as
was the opportunity to ruin a mummy simply by stealing a single item of great
power, a thing of the Ancients as it was described.
He slept poorly, dreaming of demons and darkness,
as his mind wandered between power and duty, strength and
temptation. What did it all mean? What truths were obscured, and what
consequences would follow?
Even if he got this item- supposedly an orb of some kind- he was uncertain
what he would do with it. Perhaps give to Tahren, perhaps to Iunna or
Hammersong- or perhaps, as he feared, he would be unable to resist the
temptation and would do the unthinkable, disgracing himself and the Village
for powers that had yet to be revealed. This dilemna caused him great anxiety
and fueled the fire of rage in his gut.
There were many mysteries obscured and no doubt great dangers in this
mission. After much deliberation, he decided that he would trust this
information with the Commander in hopes of greater clarity on what it all
meant and perhaps to clear his worries as well.
Discussions with the Commander
Added Mon Mar 19 05:13:20 2012 at level 51:
Salyeris was, of course, stern in her insistence that the Lich would only
bring trouble, that no Villager would ever seek power from nor aid a Lich for
any reason, yet she also seemed to understand the value of this information.
Get this item, whatever it is, and take it to Thror, she had said.
Djetmai reflected on this, as he had known it was right. And yet he still
felt a nagging inside, as if the darkness of the Lich had crawled inside of
him with promises of immense power. Temptations which were difficult to
ignore, leaving him knowing what was the right action- to get this thing and
make sure that it does not make it to the hands of the Lich. Yet deep down he
knew not what he would do, for all his life he was not one to be predictable
or ever in full control of his desires.
He had not been able to lay eyes on the mummy and worried that his window of
opportunity would be short. Preparing for a rest, he was alerted to the
presence of the Meter of Mind in Akan and rushed to make a stealthy strike.
In approaching the mountains, he was detected and an epic battle ensued. His
raged boiled over like never before, having fallen to the manticore so many
times and knowing another death to the thing was unacceptable. And so on this
day, fighting a creature of shifting forms and fueled by the rage of his
internal war, he nearly killed the thing as it flew off only breaths away
from death, leaving Djetmai raging against the dwarves in his way. While the
Meter did not fall in death, the victory was very real for Djetmai. After so
many hardships, so many lost battles, he felt that he had become a true
warrior.
As his bloodthirst subsided, he realized that he had grown to a new level of
skill and strength. That he needed no magic, nor the promised powers of a
Lich- that he would do what was right and that we would reflect the strength
of his father, of Akedeh, of Salyeris, and of the Village. Should he find
this mummy, should he acquire this orb, he now knew in his heart what he
would do. Even if it meant the gates of hell would open and an army of
darkness would descend upon him- he would seek out Lord Hammersong.
Magic and Darkness, Violence
Added Sat Apr 7 08:36:41 2012 at level 51:
The orc Krunk towered like a beast over the corpse of Commander Salyeris.
Djetmai stood watching in utter shock- in his many years he had never seen
Salyeris fall. Before he could react, the orc was upon him, bashing him
helplessly into the ground. It all happened so quickly. The Orb was gone and
Djetmai was left as a ghost, wondering whether it had truly been a thing of
great importance at all, whether the Lich had simply been an apparition or
perhaps even a dream in his own mind.
It took several days, but slowly his nightmares began to ease. It seemed that
the burden of carrying a magical item of such great power had left him deeply
impacted-the longer he held a magical thing, the darker his mind became.
Whether this was due the magical powers themselves, a curse of the Lich, or
simply the temptations these things entailed, it was impossible for him to
discern without further experimentation. And for now, he feared what that
would demand.
The most recent incident occurred following a raid on the Island. Djetmai
could only recall leaving the Island with the Key, feeling a warming power of
its magic in his hand. And the next thing he can remember, he was standing
alone in Moudrilar's monastery, all the monks were dead, the walls and his
own blade were covered in blood.
From this point forward he decided that he had best keep his distance from
all magical things. It remained unclear what the meaning of all of
this was, but it weighed heavily on his mind. At times he was ashamed, at
times afraid of what could happen. Until he learned more, he would keep these
things to himself and would do all that he could to stay away from
secrets to himself and would do all that he could to stay away from the taint
of magic.
