Description

A wiry human with lithe frame and swarthy skin, lurks close to the shadows. Dressed in rather nondescript and drab clothing which seems to blur the edges of his form. Cinched around his waist, arm, legs and various parts of his body are tightly woven hemp braids, both light and very strong. Strong and slender fingers fidget with a small length of this rope, tying and untying the most complicated knot you have even seen in you life. Tucked into the top of his dusky leather boots you see the handle of a heavy and functional dagger, a closer look reveals a dull and dark oiled curved sword, like those favored by the bandits of the desert lands. Within the shadows of his face you finally make out his feral eyes, which sweep over you with a look which is a mixture of hunger, contempt and avarice.

Role

To a fool with a hammer.

Added Mon Mar 3 14:00:18 2008 at level 49:
Everything looks like a nail.
Bhalfwei seems to think everything is a meal for him, and that I am his to
command. Fool! He knows nothing of stealth, guile or manipulation, and fails
to see the value of the insinuation into the confidence of others. What he
sees as a missed meal I see as greater power and control over his enemies.
Already the Imperial Shaman tells me about troop moments and Imperial plans
of attack. Soon the time will come that I can step out into the open. Does he
not think that my constant refusal to unveil myself as a Scion has reason and
purpose. I am forced to fore go many of the benefits of the Dark Pact simply
for reason of concealment. How many battles could have been won if I had
simply blustered into the world blowing the horn of the Cul'gra as he has
done, or been safe having the Chasm to rest within in times when refuge was
needed? No, I will bide my time and keep to my plan. When I have achieved what
I must, then the world will know, and the fools who have been deceived will
despair at their gullibility.

The Kingpin of Galadon

Added Tue Feb 26 15:34:20 2008 at level 47:
Dkarfvoor sat in the meeting chambers of the Galadon guild and reflected on
his elevation to Kingpin. He did not think he had imagined the timber of
amused admiration he had heard in Glinar's voice after his appointment. It
had been a long path, filled with twists and turns, each of them a calculated
manipulation to achieve his goals. The first step was ticking the fool
Maxwell into paying his guild dues. Then duping the Bandit King into thinking
he was only there to inform on Maxwell, and that his true loyalties lay in
Hamsah. Oh the gifts and gold he was paid for each nugget of information he
had passed. Jellek had desired the open Kingpin seat when Maxwell took his
own life in despair, and to that end had pass nearly 200 gold coins to
Dkarfvoor in return for his vote. But Dkarfvoor had other plans, the Thief
Lord had declared that should a tie ensue the Elite who had contributed more
would be the victor. Some honeyed words to Gaorloch, twisted his heart
against Jellek's notable absence. Some thievery and bribing of the High
Herald had procured another 100 gold to pass Jellek's donations, and with
that Gaorloch's vote.
Now he had achieved more than many imagined, what better cover for his dark
manipulations than at the head of the Galadon thieves. It would ensure that
most of his dark deeds would be considered greed motivated, and all the while
he would expand his knowledge of the dark arcane scrolls and the black pact
with the Ccul'gra. The Shadows of the Eternal Night would grow, the world
would be plunged into a darkness of his making, and within those shadows he
would revel in the chaos.

Dues to be Paid

Added Mon Feb 25 10:27:15 2008 at level 47:
Sitting in his favorite shadowed alcove of the Inn, Dkarfvoor gazes out at
the crowd, looking for an opportunity, a mark. A small popping sound amidst
the inn's clamor catches his attention, and a smile filled with malice and
avarice spreads across his face. The mage. Slipping from his table he moves
through the crowd to the Rabbit's Corner and there finds Dizari throwing dice
with gambler. Observing in the shadows he sees the mage spending a small
fortune trying to get the better of the Inn's most adept con-man. After
several hours and over 100 gold coins the mage gets his wish, a pouch of
nourishment. Dkarfvoor watches his face shine with glee and buoyed by his
good fortune he sets off out to the East Sumners Road, too arrogant to
flatten his form. Dkarfvoor follows him, with a footfall as soft and deadly
as an assassin's blade. A few steps on the road and he springs into action,
the mage slumps to the floor in mid-stride and has a gag stuffed into his
mouth within moments. 'Damn this cheap rope!' As he cinches the mage's hands
the rope breaks. A blindfold and a swift binding on the legs. Dkarfvoor
chuckles as he plucks the pouch of nourishment from the mage's sleeping
hands, prizing his clutching fingers apart. A few more choice pieces before
the mage wakes and rubs the lump on his head, hopping and shuffling with his
bound legs he moves off down the road, desperately trying to tear the gag
from his mouth. 'Fool! He hasn't even realized I am still on his heels',
chuckles the thief in his head. As the mage bends forward to untie his legs
he presents Dkarfvoor with the back of his head. "Thwaap!" He slumps to the
ground once more. This time the ropes hold and the mage is soundly trussed.
With almost 30 gold coins plucked from his prone form there is a sudden
clamor as a shapeshifter suddenly buries his crocodillan teeth into Dizari.
Not one to let an opportunity slip pass, Dkarfvoor drives his knife into the
mages side, but in the melee the bindings slip and the mage escapes.
Sitting in the Hidden room of the Galadon guild Dizari's voice reaches his
ears, 'quite a mistake, not to accept your place as my inferior' intones the
mage. 'I am the inferior of none' responds Dkarfvoor, 'it is simply a matter
of tearing the veil from their eyes and letting them see the truth of that. I
did warn you. The mistake was yours to cross me.'

The Path of Revenge

Added Mon Feb 25 10:25:56 2008 at level 47:
The other scions were foolish if they thought they could put a collar on
Dizari, and use him as a tool. Dkarfvoor would not be lulled, he knew only too
well the art of twisting others to believe they were the dominant, the users,
and all the time bleeding them dry and twisting them to ones ends. No, he
would not be so fooled, and so he watched as they gathered in Galadon to
learn with the drow. There was a sudden 'pop' as the mage's form expanded out
into two dimensions in front of the Warrior's guild. It had barely finished
its shift when Dkarfvoor's blackjack sent him slumping to the floor. Within a
few moments he was trussed and bound, and his pockets were being emptied.
'Too many bystanders' the thief thought 'I need to get him somewhere quiet'
but in his haste he pulled a cinch too tightly, and after a brief struggle
the mage escaped. With a small shrug in the shadows Dkarfvoor deposited
several gold coins and into his pouch and slipped out the eastern gate, there
would be another time.

Betrayal

Added Mon Feb 25 10:25:17 2008 at level 47:
Dizari spoke a word of recall and the warrior disappeared from the ruins, the
water rippling as it swirled into the place where he had stood. Dkarfvoor
looked at his wounds and the blood that floated out into the water, swimming
out would only attract sharks and so he uncorked his potion of recall. Dizari
held up a finger, 'hmm well I suppose a word from him would suffice' thought
the thief. But instead the mage cast a spell which sped his metabolism, and
on the next breath cast another so slow Dkarfvoor's. Despite the already
chill water, the hair on the back of the thief's neck stood on edge as his
instincts flared, but before he could toss back the potion the mage struck
stunning his senses and freezing his limbs. The fight was short, an already
wounded thief could do little, and Dkarfvoor found his ghostly form at the
feet of the healer. 'An almost admirable betrayal', he thought, 'but not one
that will go unrepaid'.
The mage's voice drawled in his head 'You would have done well to have just
given me that piece.' Of course, the ring, he knew the mage had coveted it.
Yet it would become the most expensive piece of jewelry the drow would ever
posses, for it would cost him dearly.

The Shadows Darken.

Added Tue Feb 12 09:40:24 2008 at level 45:
Shenkov was well please with the thief's information and on the gift he
presented the mage. Dkarfvoor knew well the necromancer's penchant for
powerful artifacts, and besides, neither had really cost him a thing other
than to chance his arm against a hostile villager. A villager who he had now
coddled, and while didn't trust the thief entirely, thought him just to be
greedy rather than anything more sinister. Another fool, caught in the web.
It was foregone that the Advisor would open up the Chasm and let its darkness
embrace the thief, the prospect of having victims bound and trussed like a
Dagdan turkey on the Svirf festival of Yule, was just too tempting. Dkarfvoor
also suspected the Necromancer would soon be, if not already, seeking to
become. The lines of age on his face were already evident, time was beginning
to bury its fingers into his flesh. He was not wrong, not long after
inducting Dkarfvoor, the mage presented him with the riddles of his becoming.
"All fine and well" the thief thought, "there will be much strength to be
gained if the mage becomes, although...." he glances at his blackjack, "this
will do me no good against his like."
The Beast Igbah might prove a hurdle, he was simple and brutal in his
tactics. It seemed the intricate web Dkarfvoor wove around himself was lost
on the giant. "Kill Maran Tara'bal dead", bellowed the Beast, but to do so
would reveal to the Fortress' motley fools that he was already a Scion, and
not merely, as he had intimated a 'paid lackey earning a living'. By the
demons of the sand, he would have happily stopped his attack if the fool
Juhldalor had given him the 200 gold he claimed to be getting paid to whittle
down their cabal's guardian. Still the giant too could be manipulated, and
Dkarfvoor was just the one to do it.

The Ties that Bind

Added Tue Feb 12 09:34:44 2008 at level 45:
"I will only speak to one of you at this time." The dark mage intoned.
Dkarfvoor heard the subtle inference in his voice, and knew the warrior Orbis
would also. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Orbis tilt back his head and
quaff a gray potion, causing a shimmering shield to appear around his form.
The warrior bows his head forward to bring a yellow root from his bag and
Dkarfvoor springs into action. Yawning broadly he stretches his arms wide,
and with a pirouette graceful enough to be worthy of the Sultan's harem
dancers, he saps the back of Orbis' exposed head and the warrior slumps to
the ground. With speed and dexterity Dkarfvoor binds and gags his victim,
much to the amusement of the Chasm's Advisor and his dark mage co-hort. As
Orbis' eyes slowly open Shenkov leans over him "I hope you realize that
your hesitation is what put you in this predicament warrior." Stepping
back he allows Dkarfvoor to continue his work, picking the warrior clean
of his potions and weaponry, the last act beginning a brief skirmish.
"I have seen enough." Shenkov drawls, and turning to the thief "come
with me".

After some words the thief slips away north back to Hamsah, with murder on
his mind and tasks to win the Advisor's favor. He chuckles to himself,
knowing fine well that the Advisor is no fool, at least in terms of
recognizing the skill and worth of Dkarfvoor's talents, and even better he
understands the need for maintaining the veil of deceit which has been pulled
over the eyes of so many.

When we practice to Deceive

Added Wed Feb 6 16:42:05 2008 at level 41:
A slender human with a thin, almost hawkish face, sits in a quiet alcove in
the Inn of the Eternal star quietly watching. Across his nimble hands dances
a gold coin, flipping over his knuckles with dexterous grace. He smiles a
thin smile as he thinks of the web he has spun over these last years, the
ears he has poured honey into, the hands he has pressed gold into and the
backs he has stuck daggers into. Each layer of deceit covering more layers,
each thread of the web leading to darker secrets, or nowhere at all. There
were few indeed who could unravel what he had wrought, just like his most
complex of his knots, fools would fumble with it trying to unravel the truth,
and by then it would be too late for them.
Fortress fools who thought he was of the grey path, or sought redemption.
A bandit King who thought he was his inside man in Galadon.
A shadow Lord who thought he was close to taking the Oath.
Villagers who saw him as almost a scout spotting magi and enemies.
Elites of the Galadon guild who gave him money so he could move up the ranks
and vote for them to be Kingpin.
Yes indeed, what a web, and he there he would sit, like a great spider and
watch his prey as they became entangled in his lies and perished. With a
flourish the gold coin is gone, secreted away. A party of adventurers set out
headed off to galadon, one of them he noticed had a rather heavy purse of
gold.

Overview

Added Thu Jan 10 16:23:22 2008 at level 18:
He views almost anyone who is guliable as a weak fool, true strength comes from
the manipulation of others to achieve your goals.
He is obsessed with the arcane and views magic and the power is can bestow as
a treasure for the taking. He has seen the feats of the dark magicians of the
Scions of Eternal Night and is determined to become one of them, by hook or
by crook. He will use his honeyied tongue when needs be, and rope, dagger and
death and suffering to gain his desires.

A day in the life

Added Thu Jan 10 16:16:18 2008 at level 18:
"I thank you both for your efforts" Dkarfvoor intones in his heavily accented
Theran. "I can do without the thanks, just cough up the gold that was
promised us!" The drow punctuates his point by stabbing a slim finger at the
swarthy skinned human sitting across the table. "and the price be 20 gold
more for the efforts you seem to appreciate so much." He glances at the large
giant sitting by his side, who shifts his grip on a rather vicious looking
axe, as if to reinforce the price change and reducing the possibility of
protracted bartering. The human sighs and his shoulders slump in
acquiescence, and defeat. "Very well, I suppose I cannot complain it is a
feat I could not have completed." With a rueful smile he indicates his
missing lower right leg. "I doubt I could have out run any elven guards, or
pick any locks with this:" he brandishes the hook which he sports instead of
a right hand. "Such is the fate of inept thieves." Drawls the drow
acerbically, "now, our payment if you please!"

Dkarfvoor reluctantly counts out 100 gold coins and takes possession of the
sheaf of arcane scrolls. "A costly endevour indeed, and my last gold coin. I
hope these contain the potent dark magic I have been hoping for....perhaps
you can buy a round of drinks, since I have not a penny left to my name? No?
Ah well let me see you out." He climbs onto the crude wooden crutch which
replaces his leg and stumps over to the tavern door. "Goodbye then, perhaps
we can do business again some time." The Drow and his pet giant brush by him
without a glance, Dkarfvoor maintains his sullen countenance long enough to
watch the pair head east down the road and out of sight, then all semblance
of it slides off his face to be replaced with a look of hard, cold greed. He
twists off the hook which was concealing his right hand and his lower right
leg appears as he unties the rope that held is concealed. With a last glance
at the road he slips out the back of the inn.

"What a mark!" clucks the drow, quite pleased with himself. "Did I not tell
you we would fleece that fool!" He pats the bag of gold at his waist and
pulls some scrolls from within his jacket, "and here, we still have the best
of the scrolls to sell to my contact in Arkham. See I told you if you stuck
with me my large friend we would make great profit, eh Doarmas? Doarmas?" The
drow glances over to his companion, but the giant is not there, "What the?" A
sudden pain erupts in the back of his skull before his hand has even found
the hilt of his sword. Dkarfvoor quickly stuffs a gag in the drows mouth and
trusses him up like a goat for the slaughter, before dragging him into the
ditch beside the fire giant. "This would be mine," Dkarfvoor whispers as he
cuts the purse from the drow's belt, "and these" he stuffs the scrolls into
his robe. For good measure he divests the two of what other valuables his
nimble fingers can find. He notices the drow stirring and takes advantage of
his incapacitated state. With his voice sounding like gravel he says "What we
be doin' wid dese two now den Gramchak? We cut off der hands like we did yon
other fer poachin on our turf?" He moves to the otherside in replies in a
voice with a harsh duergar accent "would be less dan they deserve ah think,
an a leg below tha knee too ah think. Go git me tha
