Description
The arial before you looks rather mundane, but an air of haughty superiority
definitely surrounds her. Her outfit looks a bit better than average, but
still seems a bit off, as if the cloaks and leathers she dons are make-shift
attempts at better brands. Her beak is only partially covered by a thin black
veil, which seems to serve no real purpose apart from style. The only part of
her regalia that actually appears to be worth anything is the jewelry, which
is not only worn on her fingers, but even studded into her beak and hanging
from her wings. Her belt has a number of small purses hanging from it, and at
least one is letting off the slight jingle of coins when she moves
carelessly. Apart from her appearance, her smell is so overwhelming that it
is almost unpleasant, as the earthy scent of herbs surrounds her almost like
an aura.
Role
Overview

Drond is an Arial who originally was born in Arial City, as most are, though
specific events had her move elsewhere through her life. Her family was
rather standard, and there was nothing about her while young that would hint
at her eventual joining into the Empire or her practice into poisoning. Her
normal life was interrupted, though, when she made a terrible mistake while
gathering herbs as requested by her father. She either hadn't been paying
well enough attention, or simply mistook one herb for another - but the
cost was dire - and this simple mismatch of herb and poison caused her
parents to suffer rather painful deaths, which traumatized her.
After this, despite her young age, she left Arial city in a hurry and made
her way to Galadon. She acted as a peddler at times, thieving her way through
survival at others, but this overall cast her into the more dark circles of
social interaction. During this period she because almost envious of the
security she saw that certain offices or groups held. Individuals, as she saw
them, could be skillful, masterful, or entirely genius - but against the
cohesive unity of a group, especially one dedicated, the individual had no
chance. This is what started her attraction to the Empire, and she fit the
role of a blood-oath nicely. She could hold her own against other members of
the Empire, pay her dues to both her guild and citizenry, and meld into the
position quite smoothly. Though one thing she would not admit to other
imperials: while many join the Empire out of pure selfish greed, or simply to
benefit themselves, she was actually dedicated to it as a unit more-so than
just herself, in an almost irrationally selfless way. This is mainly due to
her extreme fear of true solitude or chaos, and her desire to keep her life
and surroundings 'in order'. The Empire is more or less her safety net,
though it may be one that is barbed and hanging above a spike pit.
As an individual she tends to prefer being in the background, never being
showy enough or cocky enough to really truly take the spotlight.
Additionally, in combat, she prefers the backing supportive role - and thus
gives no second thoughts to "honor", "pride" or "fairness". If
there is an opportunity to get something she wants, she will not hesitate to
ride on someone else's back to get it - and she rarely would fully exert
her abilities alone, always preferring still to be the hand nudging someone
else forward from the shadows.
The cost of carelessness
Added Fri Apr 26 17:44:27 2013 at level 42:
"You weren't even listening. Do I need to list the ingredients again?" said
Drond's father as he chuckled. He was currently stoking the fire and
preparing a pot beside it. Drond's mother was currently still in the upper
floors of the city, as she had left to buy some drinks and snacks for their
celebratory meal.
Drond flew away from their house, off towards the mountains below the city,
as it she was assigned with collecting the herbs necessary for the stew being
made. Despite her objection, she hadn't actually heard a thing her father had
said - she was preoccupied thinking about a certain male arial she saw
flaring his wings while looking at her. In her stubborn teenage mood, she
thought the entire idea was stupid - and couldn't care less if she chose the
wrong herbs.
Once in the mountains she began shuffling around through small shrubs,
mumbling to herself "Was it this one? Or this one? He said something about
the leaves, but this one looks fine I guess". And so she carelessly scooped
together some random herbs she found and headed back to the city, still
mentally preoccupied with things she considered far more important than the
dull act of cooking.
As Drond returned to her house, her parents were flirtatiously arguing while
waiting for her. She dramatically rolled her eyes at the sight of them and
tossed the satchel of herbs on the ground near them and went to sit in the
corner with a book she was pretending to read. While she did love her
parents, she currently felt more rebellious - and because of that tended to
avoid them, instead preferring to hang around those of her own age and
sometimes even venture into the more thuggish areas of the city.
Her father turned his head, his beak gleaming a bit in the dim lighting, "The
stews ready, Drond, get your tail-feathers in here and let's eat". "Yeah yeah
whatever" Drond responded without standing, she was going to draw this out to
make sure they knew how meaningless she thought their little 'family moment'
was. Her parents, familiar with the behavior, went ahead and began their meal
while chatting.
The sound of their talking was annoying to Drond. It wasn't that their
happiness bugged her, but the informal way they just ignored her, and even
though she knew it was her fault for not joining in, the fact that she wasn't
being attended to was still frustrating. Their voices just grated on her
nerves - and she knew it'd be like this until the day she moved out.
Thinking about this, she realized that her parents voices had stopped. All
the noise had stopped. The room was uncomfortably silent, which was uncommon
for the household. She moved the book and sat up and saw both of her parents
on the floor, small flecks of foam leaking from their beaks, with the soup
spilled near their bodies - their unmoving, non-breathing, dead bodies.
An empty life, continued stagnancy.

After her parents' death, Drond wasn't sure what to do with herself. The
shock of seeing their corpses traumatized her, and she cried for several days
- wandering the streets like one of the lower class beggars. Her life was
over. Her family was dead. All of it because she didn't listen to just one
thing her father was trying to tell her. In her depression she considered
ending her life, by tossing herself from the city with her wings tied, or
just recklessly assaulting one of the dangerous thugs of the lower city.
Those that she did associate with were those that could help her find a
certain numbness that she had grown addicted to. Rampant drinking, opium
usage, and anything else she could get her hands on became brief moments of
happiness that she could escape to. Needless to say, though, this lifestyle
was fiscally draining - and soon she took to pickpocketing, begging, and
thuggish behavior to feed her addictions. It was during this time that she
learned the more basic skills that thieves need: kicking dirt in the eyes of
pursuers, tripping up targets, and how to wield a knife effectively enough to
rob someone.
It was also during this time that she learned the usefulness of opiates. One
of them, of course, was for herself. But additionally, if one had a gentle
enough hand, it could be clasped over the mouth of your enemy via a cloth, or
slipped into their food - which would provide an easy moment to rob them
blind. This sometimes gave way to a problem, though, as she would run out of
opiates to feed her addiction quickly if she used it to rob, or run out of
her tools for robbery when enjoying her addiction. Through a bit of
suffering, and experiment, she figured out proper doses enough so that her
'business' could prosper, as well as her ever-present desire for the pleasant
numbness that opium provided.
All in all, life was passing. It wasn't good, it wasn't bad, and half the
time she couldn't remember her age or what exactly was going on. She lived in
the moment, as many Arial do, and grasped only for the next quick pleasure.
