"Dat's yer damned fourteenth blade ya cracked in da fire ya useless
gully git! Ya sure yer mum's a dwarf? She gots a beard nice 'n long??
Maybe yer ain't gots in it yer blood, lad. Give it up, it ain't
gonna be nothin' but 'arder and yer can't e'en do the damned daggers!!"
Simultaneously deflated from despair of failure, furious for the insult
to his mother and determined not to let it all deter him from his chosen
path, Drothgar mentally lays his hackles back down, keeps his glare just
short of murderous when he glances at Grogginnd the forgemaster, and
with his right hand tosses the now useless piece of metal into the scrap
bin while with his left picks up the next, his fifteenth, to begin the
process yet again. "Yer da forgemaster and ya c'n say what yer wantin',
but der ain't nothin' yer c'n be sayin' dat's gonna stop meh from becomin'
a forgemaster mehself, and one o'da best damned ones o'all time!"
Grogginnd laughs deeply, with some mirth but also with some sadness. "Yer
right lad, I'm da forgemaster, and yer fergettin one ting: it's meh metal
yer workin dere and it ain't gonna be long a'fore I'm sayin enuf, nah more
o'mine will yer be ruinin'. So beh thinkin' 'bout dat fer a while lad,
oderwise yer gonna be findin' a new forge 'n forgemaster." With that he
moves on to his own work in another of the many rooms and hearths in the
large smithy just outside Akan.
They say forging and smithwork is in the blood for dwarves, and Drothgar
truly is the child of two dwarves despite Grogginnd's barb, but like most
things, some seem to pick it up easier than others. Still, being a bit
ham handed isn't enough to stop him, now or before, smithing or otherwise.
His father is a one of Ludan Grondhom's war captains and his example is
always in Drothgar's mind. You don't rise to being an elite guard unless
you've spent your time learning your trade, learning to make war. Drothgar
for a long while thought he'd follow in his father's footsteps but the
call of the forge was too strong, and making the arms for his father and
his father's comrades to use is what keeps him up at night. The interminable
war against the seemingly endless hordes of duerg will surely not end soon
and quality weapons and armors are always in demand. His mother, the morning
cook in the king's kitchens, is just the opposite: soft where his father
is hard, ready with a treat where his father is ready with a bracing slap
and curt rebuke for any perceived failing. A dichotomy that could have gone
two ways, fighting eachother and creating a disaffected youth, or melding
into hard, tempered strength, also capable of compassion and joy. His future
seemed clear: a woman he'd find, one with a fine long beard, ruddy smile and
passion at all the right times, a forge of his own, his name known for solid
sureness and quality crafting, children to carry his name to the future.

But so far nothing seems to be as simple as he planned. You can't attract
the woman you want unless you have a trade to pay for a home, to give you
coin to take care of a family. You can't make a name for yourself if you
can't manage to master anything beyond the most basic forgecraft. And so
far Drothgar has not succeeded. All of this is common grist for his mind's
mill and it races around as he works this fifteenth dagger. "Pay attention
ya damned fool, what're yer thinkin', not thinkin' 'bout what yer doin!" he
thinks to himself. Too late though, as the loud CRACK! can be heard across
the floor. A few eyes lift, a few knowing smirks, all almost more than
Drothgar can bear. Shame is a terrible thing.
Tossing this last icon of failure into the scraps bin Drothgar cleans his
tools and space and banks the hearth, calling it a day. Not bothering to
call out or tell anyone - they'll notice and if they don't, does it really
matter? - he packs up his few things, tucks his beard into his belt, and
heads home. The walk isn't far, and as usual he's deep in his own head
so he barely notices the world around him. "Yer home a bit early m'dear,
everythin' a'right?" asks his Mother, preparing an evening meal before
going to sleep so she can be up before dawn to get the castle's meals
ready. "Aye Mum, nothin ter worry yerself o'er," he responds, heading
directly to his two-room space in the home. Putting his things away and
changing into fresh clothes he returns to the kitchen and sits down, watching
his mother at work. Shortly thereafter his younger sister, Ergrenye, joins
them, sitting across from Drothgar in her usual spot, and amiably chats about
her day, her clothing and everything else of absolutely no concern to Drothgar.
Not long after that his father enters and the meal can begin. After a quick
prayer to Thror in thanks they begin in earnest, beards and moustaches flying
and collecting crumbs as copious amounts of food and drink are ingested.
"Ah ran inter Grogginnd on meh way 'ome, laddie, 'n 'e ain't 'appy wid yer.
What in da nine 'ells yer doin in dere all day? Ain't yer learnt notin' yet??"
"Dinna be s'ard on the lad, m'dear," said Mum, "ain't like yer learnt 'ow ter
fight in a day!" "Don't be tellin' meh ta hush up, m'love, ain't been but a
a day fer da laddie, been almost a year now 'n 'e aint gettin' any better."
With a quick icing look at his son, Father returns to his meal, grumbling
incomprehensibly under his breath. Wanting to quickly change the subject,
and with it the mood, Ergrenye pipes in, "Da, c'n I beh goin ter da castle
wid yer and watchin' when dem fire giants from the volcano 're comin'? I 'eard
they's sendin' some kinda party to talk 'bout some kinda treaty 'r sometin. I
ain't ne'er seen a fire giant! C'n I go, please???" "Absolutely not!" roars
Da. "Ain't no place fer a young lass like yerself! Get yer mind away frem such

'n focus on yer duties 'ere at 'ome. But yerself lad, mebbe yer should beh
comin'. Do ya some good ter see fightin men o'giant size. Plan ter join meh."
Drothgar looks up with a puzzled look and after a short pause says, "If yer say
so Da, but yer know I ain't carin' much 'bout 'em fire giants. Wouldn't want
ter marry one I s'pose, but wouldn't much want ter marry 'n elf neither. Always
correctin what ain't wrong in meh talkin'? Feh! 'N don't start wid dem blue
giants neither, livin' in da ocean! Dat's just crazy like." Mum chimes in,
"I 'eard dere's gonna be a protestin' bunch showin' up, led by da paladin
guildmaster. Yer sure it's gonna be safe m'dear?" "Dat Wasorvha, she's just
stirrin up trouble," answers Da, "but don't ya worry m'love, ah'll 'ave meh
a whole troop o'lads wid me 'n dere ta keep da peace." "If ya say so, m'dear."
Not much was said after that and dinner came to an unremarkable end.
The following days passed quickly, and Drothgar, while still having trouble,
did have some success in the forge, enough that Grogginnd wasn't entirely
negative. On the day of the embassy from the Lord of Kiadana-Rah Drothgar
took the day and instead of heading to the forge he went with his father to
Akan proper and the castle. He did notice his sister sneaking out of the house
just before them and had a quick moment of desire to tattle, but quickly stifled
it and decided he was being mature by doing so. He caught her out of the corner
of his eye once or twice as they made their way but mostly he mentally
acknowledged her stealth. Da never noticed, for he surely would have sent her
directly home, and not kindly, either. Upon arrival, Da ordered the placement
of the troops, covering the pathway as well as high ground and various tactical
locations. He tried to point these things out to Drothgar but in truth he was
listening with only one ear, the other paying far more attention to the weapons
and armor on the soldiers, and, to be honest, the lasses walking through the
market.

"They're 'ere, they're 'ere!" rang out voices of small children who had lined
the mountain passes waiting to get the first glimpses of the black fire giants.
"A'right lads, let's beh stiffenen' up dem ranks, git yer scabbard loose dere
Vrondrek! Move, move! Dey almost 'ere!" Da's shouting could probably be heard
all the way to Voralian it was so loud, but no one complained and everyone did
exactly as he said. Drothgar only hoped Ergrenye had the good sense to stay out
of Da's sight and not get caught staring at the giants right out in the open.
She'd feel the bite of his belt if she did, that was for sure! But all thoughts
left his mind as just then from around the corner and entering the gates past
the guards was a being so tall, so big, he almost could not believe it. Never
before had he seen a giant and even knowing their size in his mind he was
stunned to see them in person, real and up close. Almost immediately his eyes
went to their gear, their weapons and armor, strange yet obviously sturdy and
well made. One held a sword longer than Drothgar is tall, making him wonder
how much mining they must do to have all that metal. Brestplates that could
make a roof for a small dwarven home, vambraces and greaves that could match a
dwarven polearm in length. Incredible.
Fifteen of them there were, fourteen guards and functionaries of one sort or
another, and one, in the front and center, obviously in charge and the reason
for all the others' presence. Not a cheeful creature, and while it probably
meant for its smile to be genial it looked more to Drothgar like the viscious
predatory grin of a wild beast. But even if he were a coward - which he is
not - still he would not be afraid for these giants were alone, in Drothgar's
world, and surrounded by his Da's elite troops. Nothing bad could or would
happen.

That was the thought going through his mind as the delegation arrived in the
center of the market, where the King and his courtiers had made a pavilion
to meet and greet. As the two groups met there was a slight popping sound
from somewhere in the back of the crowd, back near the gate entrance. Then
another, and another, until finally there were too many to count and all of
a sudden there were dozens, scores of beings, not giants, rushing forward,
gesticulating and speaking in strange words, and dwarves were spasming, falling
to the ground bleeding, vomiting, hurling their guts out, others were entirely
still, unnaturally so, not even their eyelids moving or blinding how frozen
they seemed, as these beings, now obvious to everyone as mages, plunged daggers
and other weapons into the dwarven victims. Da's voice cried out and to their
credit the fire giants began fighting the beings, on the side of the dwarves,
perhaps unhappy with being used by these magical marauders. Chaos reigned in
the square for what seemed like hours but in truth could only have been minutes.
With the giants' aid Da's men began to overcome the surprise and beat back the
invaders. As they retreated they began saying the same, incomprehensible, words,
and make the same gestures, and would disappear into thin air. But each only
did so after doing as much damage as possible. And as Drothgar watched, from
just outside the brewery, Ergrenye moved from out of the doorway and started
to run toward her father, her eyes wild with fear. Seeing her at the same time,
Da hurled himself over bodies and men and rushed toward her, his eyes just as
wild with worry, his beard flying with the wind of his stout legs pumping him
forward. Drothgar was sure his father would be there instantly, so fast was he
running. But time slowed, almost stopped, and from out of nowhere a creature
appeared, that tell-tale pop unheard in the general bedlam, and a visage of death
on its face. With almost casual non-chalance he spoke words and moved his hands
and Da, the most powerful dwarf Drothgar had ever known, seized up, his legs
instantly unmoving but his incredible momentum carrying his body another dozen
feet in a rolling ball of pain. Ergrenye screams. Drothgar sees her mouth
moving but cannot hear the sound. Stepping back from Da, the mage pauses,
knowing Da cannot move, cannot do anything but See, and with a smile that Drothgar
will never forget, brings a dagger across his sister's throat, slicing it like
paper. His sister's eyes bulge but quickly darken as her life drains away. And
as he lets her body fall, the mage steps toward Da, speaks more words and Da's
body cracks and bleeds, grows gills, does things Drothgar cannot even understand,
and then slowly stops moving. Da's men swarm around him and the mage takes a
flail to the head, dropping him like a stone. But no comfort comes from the

sight, Drothgar's only vision and only thought is that it cannot be true. His
Da and his sister cannot be dead. They cannot. It is not possible. It is not!
In the ensuing hours the loss of life is determined and the toll is great. Fifty
eight dwarves lay dead, and more wounded. Nine of the giants are also dead,
including the ambassador himself. While this does much to allay the belief that
the giants were part of some treachery, still the giants leave and no talk of
alliance is now heard. The bodies of the dead mages, of which there are far too
few in everyone's mind, are examined and examined and examined but no identifying
marks can be found. Humans are the majority but there are also dark-elves, mixed
bloods and even a few of the short folk. No one understands or knows why they
came, and thus the universal desire, need, to strike back goes unfulfilled. This
may be the hardest part for many. The only common thread was each was a mage.
Every single one. Not a single true warrior among them.
That night Drothgar and Mum stayed in the castle, the King insisting they not
be home alone, and that Da be laid out on a bier surrounded by Ludan and the
royal guards. Despite the carnage, it could have been far worse and all who
were there give much of the credit to Da, and he is hailed as a hero. Drothgar
gives perfunctory nods and speaks words he would not later remember to all who
come and offer their sympathy and condolences. He keeps watch over his sister,
near to Da, and the night passes slower than any before. When the sun finally
does rise, he is not the same dwarf he was the day before. Still is he determined
to be as fine a smith as possible, but no longer does he wish to make such arms
primarily to sell to others. No. Now, he will spend hours at the forge so he
can make the weapns and armor he will need to avenge Da. To avenge Ergrenye.
He will give up all his free time with friends, his easy living and indolence.
Now he will spend his life doing three things: He will forge. He will train
with weapons. And he will kill mages. All of them. They will learn that
hardship for him means death for them. And they will rue the day their kind
came to Akan.

Leaving Akan and its environs was not nearly as difficult as he'd thought, but
of course he could always return for visits, and indeed intended to in order
to take up his new religious fervor. Having decided that he will himself use
the weapons and armor he makes to take revenge on the mages of thera, he must
not only train to be the best possible warrior he can, but also the best
possible smith he can, and there is only one mentor and guide for such a
lifelong road: Thror. Always part of his and his family's life, he had been
more a passive religionist. No more. The Hammersong is among his foremost
thoughts, and he seeks to learn from and make proud his patron.
Having left, his new life in many ways only truly begun when the blood of
Faristil, a mage of the black knight's guild, pooled at his feet, the life
going out of the eyes. Drothgar had never taken a life before, and while his
righteous wrath against mages was clear, still, he worried it would be difficult
for him to actually make that killing blow. He was foolish to worry. It was
just as good if not better than he'd anticipated, and he seeks it more and more.
Of course, he is not a master smith yet, sometimes he is the hammer but always
he is himself being forged, and around the same time he tasted death himself,
at no less than Draugnir, the Hammersong's forge's guardian. A lesson learned,
it became another tempering event.

But not all is as bright as might seem from without. Like virtually all of his
people Drothgar consumes ale and beer and such brewed beverages like water.
Even so, his drinking has increased significantly since he left Akan, and
even he is not entirely sure why. Part depression over his sister and father
surely, and also part isolation from living apart from Akan, no doubt. But
while many who see and speak with him would think him a generally cheery
fellow, a keen eye might see some of it is forced, a cover for the sadness
and anger and rage that lies beneath. In his religious parlance, the ale is
perhaps a way to keep the fire from exploding out at all times. Even he himself
is not aware of this, and if challenged on it would probably reject it, but
at this point it's unclear.
The last aspect of his new life is the village of Battleragers. He's met
several already, including the commander, and for the most part they seem like
people he could make a home away from home with. Already he's seen some
unpleasant internal politics, mostly from a drowling called Xazzax, but otherwise
he's been satisfied that the men and women he'd be joining are not only worthy
but share at least in part his near all-consuming hatred for the mages. Even

Pass da salt!" Almost, for a split second, he can forget he is alone at the
table, the chairs that used to be filled by his Da and sister now and forever
empty, and enjoy his mother's cooking. But that moment quickly passes and he
lowers his head again, says a quick prayer of thanks, and eats with something
less than gusto. "Bein good Mum, always da best," he says, and though it is
true it also sounds a bit perfunctory. "So beh tellin meh 'bout yer life dere

She sits and stares at him, some pride but also some sadness in her eyes, added
to the usual sadness that has shown on her since the death of her husband and
daughter. Maybe it is a stray spark from the hearth or some stray mote of dust,
but for sure it is not a tear of emotion that is quickly wiped away. Finishing
up, Drothgar helps his Mum clear and clean the dishes, helps her with some chores
around the home, and gives her a hug and kiss on the cheek. It's painful to
leave her alone now, and for the hundredth time he tells her she should move in
their relatives, but as always she refuses. It is her home and she won't leave.
Drothgar thinks she can't bear to give up the rooms that give her all the
memories, and in his heart he can't blame her. He himself and that fire he
mentioned are tied up in similar memories, and while on the one hand he'd pay
a dragon's horde to forget the terrible day, he'd pay an even bigger horde to make
sure he always remembers.
Maturity and Decisionmaking Part One
Added Sun Mar 11 11:13:19 2012 at level 40:
Matury has laid its heavy hand on Drothgar. Childhood hardship is terrible, and
its severity can never be understated, but it also has the longest time for
recovery and the resilience of youth is an asset not to be denied. As a mature
adult, hardship and tough decisions can be as difficult, partly because they
can be more fully understood, and responsibility can be taken. One such choice
had to be made and difficult as it was for him, Drothgar did not shy away. The
day came when he realized that his visits to his Mum and childhood home were just
that, visits, and his true home is now the Village. As such, he decided it was
time to reflect that change in his life, and he purchased a small room in Hamsah
Mu'tazz, the closest to his new home where space was available. It may seem a
trivial matter but to Drothgar it was of significance. Akan is no longer his
home, and while he will always love his family, and feel kinship toward his
people, his true family now are those that pursue his same goals, the members
of the village. With the passing of several of the older brothers he begins
to feel not merely a bond, but now also an obligation to maintain and strengthen
that which they left behind. He is not a named leader, but one does not need a
title to lead, to inspire, to share wisdom, and he will do that as much as he
can, hopefully without rancor.
Also, he has spent many hours borrowing Grime's tools and fully immersed himself
in his forging craft, far surpassing the limited skills he had as a child before
the day of his Da and sister's deaths. But like all things worthy of attention,
achieving one goal, one status, merely means the next, more difficult level looms
above. His new talents pale in comparison to those of Veldrar or the other
Noldarians he has seen and heard in the Hammersong's forge. To learn from them
and gain even a small isight into their smithing is one of his deepest goals.
No doubt it will prove more difficult than even he imagines, but if it's not
difficult, chances are it's not worth doing.
Maturity and Decisionmaking Part Two
Added Sun Mar 11 11:13:48 2012 at level 40:
His body is now beginning to show some of the wear of war, not quite as hearty
as he once was, but balanced somewhat by the lessons learned gaining those scars.
Watching one or two of his brothers has led him to something of a middle ground.
He was impressed by Lohakahn's fearless charge into enemy territory, but at the
same time thought it reckless and wasteful. And their last discussion was how
the svirf thought it was ok for two applicants to fight one imperial warrior
together, two against one. Drothgar vehemently opposed this position. There
are many who can work in a forge, and many who can fight in an army, but in the
end there is but smith on the weapon, and but one warrior in each fight. He is
no knight to think of honor but rather believes that a level of courage is a
measure of a person and you lose integrity and dignity if you join with the many
to fight the one. That is how the blade crumbles, with too many hammers. To be
true you must have your own strength. That does not mean you cannot be part of
a greater group, but that you must own your deeds, must have some self-sufficiency
and must shun the ways of those that would take advantage of simple numbers.
When such a situation arose, and the mage fell to Drothgar's flail, he refused to
carve a trophy from the corpse. He was not sorry in any way that the mage fell,
but there was no great victory to be enshrined by a trophy. You can't have scars
to cherish and show with pride if you are always playing it safe. Not reckless
mind you, but not overly cautious, either. It is a lifelong path to find that
proper middle ground, and a challenge he will never finish. It's in the doing
that greatness may perhaps be born.
Adulthood and Milestones Part One
Added Thu Mar 22 21:04:48 2012 at level 51:
"Dat's it den lad, 'ere 're da keys." With those words and a bit of a sigh, Drothgar
hands the keys to the home in Akan over to a young dwarf with an even younger
wife, the new occupants. Drothgar's Mum, the last of his living family, passed
away recently, peacefully, in her sleep, in stark contrast to his Da and sister's
deaths. Taking a last look around he leaves and walks through Akan, wincing as
always when he passes the spot in the market where that evil day's deeds were done.
It had been a while since he'd seen his Mum, something he regrets now, and much
had happened in his life. That long ago child that thought he would spend his life
only at the forge and not in his father's fighting ways has now completed all the
training the guildmaster can provide, joining the other legends of the battlefield.
Likewise he has been challenged in combat as never before. But not only in combat,
but in spirit as well. A conversation with the commander, Salyeris, brought some
of it into focus. She said they are not to feel rage, not to let it have sway, but
he disagreed, saying they are the battleRagers after all, and rage is good. Rage is
why most if not all of them are there, not some dispassionate examination of magical
phenomena. Rage! Rage against the wrongness, the horror that is magic. Those who
have chosen to live a life of magic, either by being mages or by spreading magic
by other means (the non-mages of the rift and the chasm come to mind) have made the
wrong choice and the rage should not only be there, but be felt often. In the end
they agreed on this, but with the agreed caveat that it does not spill over to those
not devoted to magic, or to becoming enemies of the village deliberately. To this
there was of course no dissent.
The discussion came up over Drothgar's seeming special rage for the thief Kii, a
riftun as he calls them. And it is true he has a special dislike for this one.
He has great hatred and rage for all of them, obviously, but he can still have a
measure of respect for some of them, who earn it with their behavior. SWabaum,
for instance, is not particularly strong, but often will give combat, and do so
alone. Cersee sometimes as well. There are just examples. And when he slays them
he has taken perhaps one or two items, or more often than not, nothing at all.
But the thief, that one has earned the opposite by her behavior. And any time
she falls by his hand (he would not disrespect a brother or sister by touching
a corpse they made) he will do everything he can to leave her naked. Utterly.

Even so not all is so easily resolved. The little black bugger, as he is oft known
to call Xazzax, has shown himself to be unfit in Drothgar's mind. He fails in his
duties to the village, he lies to his hut-mates, and he often breaks the teachings
of the words in the war room. There is no denying his skill with the daggers, but
there are many powerful beings in the world, that is not reason to make them part
of the village. There is little he can do about it, and his belief in duty to the
village ensures he will not cause dissention among the ranks without great cause.
But he is always wary of that one now, and relies on him not at all.
Despite what might seem to an outsider as being negative or generally upset, these
are highlighted because they are the exceptions, not the rule. Mostly he finds the
war exhilerating, even when he falls, as he has done more often than he expected.
He brings the war, not merely waiting for it, when it is not reckless to do so. And
he is generally happy with how life is turning out now in his mature prime. If there
can be any one thing that perhaps disappoints, it is the silence he has received
from his chosen lord, Thror. But like all trials he endures, and if the Hammersong
thinks he can outlast him, he is sorely mistaken. Drothgar remains steadfast and
will do so until the day he dies. He may never work the forge with Thror, but
he will die unshaken, if that is how it must be. He remains hopeful nonetheless.
There is nothing certain in life, least of all the ways of the gods.
