Role
Background 1
Added Mon May 13 09:11:34 2013 at level 40:
The elves of the forest are known amongst woodsmen for their moonlit
revelries. They will dance and sing around a fire until dawn, and tales
caution the unwary against straying too far from the path and being enchanted
by their music, given wine that no human should drink and taken away to live
with them, only to return to the real world, unable to take pleasure in the
mundane routines of human life, growing old and grey before their time and
passing away held by a sorrow none can share with them. It is even said that
a man might enjoy the pleasures of knowing elfin women, and this is the worst
thing of all, for he will afterward never marry.
The tales are likely exaggerations, fairy tales and bedtime stories, but
nonetheless it happened that a serving girl in Evermoon became pregnant with
a human child. This is not unusual, indeed it is widely thought that the wood
elves contain some human blood in many family lines, but the half breeds are
often treated with contempt by the pure blooded elves. So it was that Eidiol
worked in the kitchens, doling out stew and washing dishes, bringing drunken
elves their wine and mopping the floors.
Background 2
Added Mon May 13 09:13:23 2013 at level 40:
He was a solitary and spiteful child, rebellious and inquisitive. He would
sneak out into the woods and feed poisonous fungus to the animals there and
watch them slowly dying. He was always perplexed at how the elves shunned
magic, despite having dedicated guildmasters in the city. He thought of the
other elves as lazy, doing nothing with their long lives besides enjoying
themselves, never reaching for the true power that could be theirs. After
twenty years of this he had had enough of the kitchens and set out into human
lands to see what else his heritage owed him.
He was fascinated at how these clumsy, ugly, short lived and stupid creatures
nevertheless applied themselves to their work and achieved great things, huge
walled cities torn from the ground, sorcerors performing dazzling feats of
magic, iron-clad warriors and mercenaries who fought with reckless abandon
and brute force. He visited Udgaard, Tir-Talath, Voralian and Galadon but was
most impressed by the city of Hamsah Mu'tazz, where he settled.
He learned that humans tended to value one thing above all else, and that was
gold. The need to accumulate currency with no honest trade to ply led him to
fall in with the thieves and whores of the city. Owing to his good looks and
appearance of youth, he would lead a certain kind of unsavoury merchant into
a trap where he would usually be killed and robbed by the rest of the gang.
He spent years navigating the underbelly of the city in this way, and others,
and slowly his compatriots began to die off or become imprisoned. Still only
a boy, though older than most of even the city's hardened criminals, he set
his sights higher.
Background 3
Added Mon May 13 09:15:28 2013 at level 40:
Everyone knew of the great Empire to the north, and there were rumours of a
new Emperor and a resurgence of Imperial strength. He resolved to become a
citizen and enter the palace, to gain real power and influence. The question
became which of the guilds to barter his way into in order to be accepted in
the Empire.
Though he had lived the lifestyle of a thief and acquired some of their
talents, the promises of power offered were not sufficent. Arcanes were not
to be trusted, and besides his strength and agility would be wasted in the
sole study of magic. Warriors lacked subtlety. His real strengths had always
been in manipulating his targets, to cause them after a fashion to love him.
The brotherhood of the abyss offered to teach him something similar - how to
be feared. His ultimate weapon would be his enemy's own psyche.
The guildmaster welcomed this unusual specimen, and he soon made good
progress within the guild, later to take the oath and enter the palace as a
citizen of the Empire.
Admiring the Empire
Added Thu May 16 09:58:25 2013 at level 40:
Little has been told of the time Eidiol spent in the Hamsah underworld, and
as might be imagined, he was involved in a great deal of misadventure. He ran
a few different rackets, selling imported poppy juice, stolen weapons and
taking care of the working girls. As well as being a place of great commerce,
there is also much conflict in the streets of Hamsah. The wars between the
Tribunal, the Outlander, the Empire and the Fortress often saw their battles
fought around the city and its outskirts. It was the Imperial soldiers that
he saw the most of when running his small operations, the other sides having
little interest in what he had to sell, or too much restraint to indulge it.
And Imperial soldiers often carried a lot of gold, though they never stayed
long in the city, and many were never seen more than once. They were given
respect and admiration amongst the city's lower classes, one of Eidiol's
girls even left the city to follow a blade who had taken a liking to her back
to the palace. What became of her he never found out. It gradually became
clear to him that the men and women of the Empire were truly the antithesis
to all that he had despised back in the Evermoon. They could appreciate the
finer pleasures life had to offer, without lingering on the sentiments of it
and idling their lives away. The lives of Imperial soldiers were short, but
lived without melancholy and regret.
This was attractive to him, since those undesireable emotions were what he
despised most about himself, deeply buried alongside closely guarded secrets
of the life he had led.
Background final chapter
Added Mon Jun 3 06:44:37 2013 at level 51:
What has troubled Eidiol most, what has caused him the pain of regret, is the
memory of his lost love. Not one of his working girls, no great beauty, a
simple girl who used to sit out on the Hamsah docks, selling jewelry and
pieces of art for a few copper a time. Having suffered an illness in
childhood, though she lived through it she never grew very tall, and spending
her time caring for her old mother, a poor drunk, she had dark circles around
her eyes, so that she looked both much younger and much older than she was,
all at once.
He first met her at a gypsy dance held beneath the canopy pier. Wine and
boredom compelled him to ask the shy girl to dance. They didn't speak much
together that night, but in the coming months they shared looks of
recognition, and he would go and buy her jewelry for his girls, for more than
it was worth, and speak what was on his mind, his troubles and secrets.
Little by little he grew inseperably attatched to her, and before long he
realised he was in love. Not knowing what else to do, he seduced the unlucky
girl.
She had never been with a man before, but she was acquainted with sin and had
secrets of her own, as he discovered. In the aftermath of their union, she
grow fearful, saying 'he' would be angry and punish her. Some other lover,
Eidiol surmised, but then she explained further - she was claimed, not by a
mortal but a demon. He watched on helpless as the invisible force assailed
her in her sleep, that he could do nothing to prevent.
He made her a promise, to rid her of the demon. He was to join the academy,
and emerge an adventurer, to gain power that even the denizens of hell would
fear. Working furiously and excelling in his training he was gone a mere
month, much less time than was expected. When he returned, he made his way
straight to her home. Finding her mother sitting alone in their kitchen,
sobbing insensibly he made his way to her chamber.
He found her lying breathless and still on her tiny bed, the sheets soaked
with blood, a knife near her hand. With a howl he swore vengeance upon the
demon that marked her.. A hundred souls he would claim, a thousand vile deeds
he would perform, to enter into the bowels of hell commanding sufficient fury
to find the demon who had driven her to this fate, to destroy him utterly and
claim back her soul as his own. And so it was with dark eyes full of silent
rage he made his way slowly and deliberately into the upper halls of the
brotherhood of the abyss.
Growing Power 1
Added Thu Jun 6 04:45:34 2013 at level 51:
The Imperial Dreadlord stood in the heart of the Refuge of the
Outlanders of Thar-Eris, as they called themselves. In the light of
the roaring flames that burned within the great tree, he crouched
hungrily over the burnt corpse at his feet, sucking out the lingering
life force of his victim, closing up the grevious wounds he had
sustained in the battle. Moments before the bowels of the tree had
echoed with the sounds of battle. The Harbringer was a cornered
animal, forced back into his lair. Eidiol had flushed him out with a
fireball and the felar had fought with ferocious abandon, letting
loose a thunderous battle cry and striking with all the fury of the
ancients, but the roaring flames spewing forth from the Dreadlord's
spear and the inferno of his magic reduced Brakrar to nothing more
than a burned out husk before he could overcome his assailant.
Shrieking its hunger the spear glowed with unholy light, forever
capturing a piece of the Harbringers soul and bringing the Dreadlord
one step closer to his goal.
Pausing a moment to contemplate his victory a sinister smile adorned
the half elf's painted features. The giddy rush he felt whenever his
weapon fed was the greatest joy that remained to him in his life. It
had been nearly a hundred years since the fateful day his beloved had
passed away and she would have been long since dead now in any case.
It had become unclear whether his purpose in collecting the souls of
his enemies was still to reclaim her or for its own sake. Whatever
the reason, he yearned for more.
Growing Power 2
Added Thu Jun 6 04:49:54 2013 at level 51:
He was just beginning to get a taste of real power, having patiently
worked his way up through the ranks of the Black Sect, finally taking
the position of Dreadlord for his own. His predecessor had been
renowned and feared, but unable to navigate the politics of the
Empire had found himself cast down the ranks, and out of the Empire,
finally taking his own life, unable to cope with the self-imposed
isolation. Few realised the role Eidiol had played in Noviask's
downfall, innocently calling him to the arena where a magistrate was
sparring with a now-dead Battlerager and dutifully recalling out of
the combat once the lawman joined the fray. Simply following the
Dreadlord's orders, had been his credible story. Bringing Hurkel into
the sect ensured that his one remaining rival for the leadership, the
giant Merf, was kept out of holding Elite status, leaving the Emperor
with no other option than to appoint Eidiol as Dreadlord. Temporarily
at first, but before long he had ensured the loyalty of the slow and
simple Merf and his position was now well secured.
Still, getting to this point had taken the same approach as he had
used to manipulate others all his life. Easier to be loved than to be
feared, and better too perhaps - was it not true that despite his
reputation Noviask was dead and gone, and Eidiol now stood in his
place? No, if he was to progress from here he would need to master
that which had tempted him to the guild in the first place, the
methods of fear and intimidation. The Emperor was still strong but he
grew old, and as he had confessed to Eidiol, tired, some even said
mad. There was only one place left for Eidiol to go in the Empire and
that was to the throne. That could not be achieved by pleasing his
superiors, only only by commanding the respect of his peers on the
council. In magical terms, he should cloak himself in the aura of
despair. The politics would be a little more complicated.
He passes his waking hours pursuing his mortal interests, chasing
away the dreams that still plague him at nights, though he tries not
to admit it even to himself.
Nearing the end
Added Sun Jun 16 04:42:19 2013 at level 51:
Nearing the end of his life, Eidiol has taken a mere three dozen souls, all
of which have passed through his grasp. His power has increased but foolish
mistakes cost him too often and too dear. He only prays that the number will
be sufficient to overcome the demon who holds the soul of his beloved in ther
afterlife.
The child Delilah has grown dear to him, being at once young and old, she
falls short of his beloved only in her lack of womanhood, which suits him
fine as he keeps his faith to the one who remains below. His last objective,
being as he will not live to see the Emperor return from his long sleep and
have a chance for the throne, is to aid the child in the becoming. Whether he
has the time left for this remains to be seen.
