Role
Background
Added Fri Aug 30 16:38:35 2013 at level 17:
Einrai's story is hardly spectacular. A son of a prosperous rural family,
uninterested in a life of a farmer, he longed for life in the "big world".
Fate soon gave him a chance, and he apprenticed to a travelling bard.
It strained his relationship with the family, but the lure of adventure was
stronger. Einrai wandered the world for several years, and was moderately
happy... until news came to him that his parents met with misfortune, which,
in turn, led them to financial ruin and indentured service.
This made him think back on his brashness. He sought adventuring for profit
now, instead of fun. Luckily, it proved fruitful as he has now pledged the
first few gold coins towards redeeming their debt.
This experience has changed him into a more grim person, however, and he
parted ways with his mentor. Seeking to employ his skills as a bard, Einrai
takes interest in Blood Tribunal, as he has come to enjoy urban order and
society where all walks of people can find their place.
Covering debts
Added Sun Sep 8 06:04:58 2013 at level 26:
"How did you get a thousand gold so fast? I knew adventuring is profitable,
but you've hardly begun your career! Did you rob someone rich or what?"
I chuckled at the friendly banker's joke and looked over my receipt again.
There's no way it would be a hefty sum for him, but for me...
"I have wealthy friends now. At best one fifth of those coins are a result
of my own profits... I know, it's nothing to be proud of, but if it means
getting my family out of servitude that much earlier..."
Meanwhile, a servant came in, carrying two hefty bags of gold coins.
"Here you are." - I grabbed both of them and turned to the banker again.
"Trust you can arrange the deal. It's almost the full sum, enough to
convince the debtor to let them free and the rest will soon follow."
"Are you going home now?" - he inquired.
"Wish I could..." - I said, handing over the coins and a letter to mother.
"I have a service of my own, that is in dire need of me. I can't leave."
Harsh duty
Added Thu Sep 12 02:31:00 2013 at level 31:
It goes without saying that a good-hearted Magistrate faces much in his job
that goes against his nature. Einrai knows that laws are indiscriminate, but
mostly sees destruction originating from evil criminals.
It both makes him feel easier fighting that menace and makes him wonder
if he should just have joined the Fortress. He wouldn't be able to fight
within the city, but in practice, that rarely happens anyway. Could still
work against lawbreakers, and would probably do more and better.
There is one reason, though, that reassures the young bard in his place.
If not him, who would take to upholding the laws? He's certainly not leaving
the duty to those wicked of the Spire, especially without oversight from
someone with conscience!
He feels he would go insane working without Ildilintra's support. Luckily,
she's around often, a person he can only strive to be as good as.
Off-duty life
Added Tue Sep 17 07:54:36 2013 at level 39:
Einrai's personality has gradually changed to less reserved since a sponsor
among Heralds had covered his family debt. This gave him an incredible jump
start, and he has been pursuing his career unhindered for a few years now.
This is reflected in his favored repertoire choice, Epic. Initial impulse
was to go with Tragic, since, in Einrai's opinion, tragedy serves a very
important function - reminding people of woes that can cappen if they're
irresponsible. While he's still his old self at times, a grim, no-nonsense
man, but spending time at the Inn with Saersha, Corlx and others made him
see the value of being open with people - and improved his charisma a bit.
He has clashed with more people too now, and done a fair share of quixotry
hunting the wicked while off-duty. Having begun to feel his strength, he
definitely loves to get into fights. By this time, he has both killed and
experienced defeat - both of which turned out not so glorious - but there
are bigger achievements ahead when he becomes a hero of the realms.
Confusion
Added Sun Oct 27 02:01:51 2013 at level 51:
Sometimes trying to understand non-humans is just so frustrating!
I can't see reason in Ildilintra's methods of making ragers' life as
uncomfortable as possible... if we are at war, by all means, we have the
ability to fight it out - but I am not accustomed to making people suffer
on purpose, even if it's to coerce them into peace. That's what Empire does!
Courtesy of Lyranoptil, we're also quite aggressive towards our traditional
enemy, Outlanders. While I'm fine with fighting over their item of power, it
does not sit well with me to take it against a lone Sunwarden who is barely
an outlaw and with whom I see no point of forcing conflict.
At the same time... I can disagree all I want, but I won't let my feelings
be the source of conflict within the Spire, for now we can't afford anything
less than total unity in the face of our enemies.
Power means pride
Added Mon Dec 16 08:26:14 2013 at level 51:
Years came one after another. With years came experience, power and pain.
Wicked, angry people accusing him of conniving and favoritism outside the
bounds of law. Well-meaning criminals, cursing him for *not* turning a blind
eye. People trying to convert him to who knows what case. He never even knew
some of those crazy beliefs existed! And people outside Tribunal telling him
he would never find happiness with his allegiance.
All of those worse than any bastard dumb enough to try to kill him. Battle
scars are the easiest to deal with, compared to all of the above.
He's a proud man, though, and stubborn. With his position and years there's
a certain degree of cynicism - after all, laws themselves are not always
reasonable. For example, one would expect being permitted to fight back if
one's group was attacked. And Einrai was at a loss for words explaining to a
young paladin why they weren't allowed to do that. However, he judged, people
who refuse to bend even so little as to accommodate that law are perhaps
their own enemy. Rare is to find understanding about that outside Tribunal.
He became a bit biased against elves for whenever he found himself at odds
with other goodly adventurers, they were almost always of elven heritage.
First the outlander girl Lalaith, then lazy Zhastu, unyieldingly stubborn
Ildilintra (once a role model for Einrai, but times change), then impatient,
arrogant Alithinia, and unreliable Valendil who went so far as to abandon
the Spire. Even lifelong friends like Andira and Saersha are, through no
fault of their own, viewed with some doubt.
Careless!
Added Sat Dec 21 08:25:55 2013 at level 51:
At least three times over the course of Einrai's service, either a song or
an improperly used talisman lead to the death of a bystander. Two times they
were goodly creatures, and one even in a city under jurisdiction. Numerous
other times foes were trying to coerce him into stilling his song - by
deliberately coaching innocent folk around the place of battle.
Every time an accident happened, it shook him out of his self-righteous
state of mind like a cold shower. These are the times he will remember first
when he thinks back on his life. Not the times when he had to put down
criminals, good-intentioned or otherwise.
A letter to my old mentor
Added Tue Jan 28 14:13:54 2014 at level 51:
You wouldn't like the sight of me today. You taught me to value freedom in
travelling, unbound by duties and going wherever. Now, I still travel, but
it is always out of duty - be it an obligatory visit to the family (their
troubles were settled and I made amends with them!), a punitive expedition,
or a crusade to some haunted place to deal with yet another ancient evil.
You warned against binding myself too much, lest time comes when I can't
follow my heart. But man grows accustomed to anything. Despite all the moral
crises I face, I see how much worse this job could be without me doing it.
It's like that park maze... remember? You asked me to best it and I could
not, then you led me to the mountain where the whole thing could be seen at
once from above, and I saw the exact route. Only much later had I understood
the hidden lesson of distancing myself from the situation at hand to find a
solution. This had helped me make some of the best decisions in my life...
including the decision to stay in active service after every setback.
Speaking of setbacks, I lost two good friends lately. One of them was also
my mortal enemy. It's hard to explain. Sometimes we grow attached to our
foes that much more.
I hope you are still well. I have fond memories of your simple wisdom.
Heh, I still remember the nickname "Crow" you gave me for my unkempt hair.
I pay homage by accepting it as my symbol. It's fitting, for like crows, we
Magistrates are less than fancy, mundane, yet omnipresent and watchful.
Your not-so-young pupil, Einrai Fuerrgo.

Curious odds
Added Sat Feb 8 02:59:25 2014 at level 51:
Seems similar circumstances provide base for different outlooks in people.
Einrai went into service because he believed it would help his adventuring
career - which in turn would help raise money for his family's debt.
Some time ago he had heard a similar story - about a woman whose mother was
imprisoned for not paying a tax. It eventually led her to renounce existing
society, and by now that woman is one of the leaders of Outlander cabal.
Sworn enemy of Blood Tribunal. But Einrai always felt there was something
he could do to show them how city life ain't that bad, and what they sought
to bring was worse tenfold. Perhaps this is one of those times. Or maybe...
it's just about helping another good-hearted person.
Luckily, there's no need to break any rules to have Nalaya's mother freed.
The system always works if you feed it a little coin, and Einrai is sure he
can afford doing so - privately, without flashing his Tribunal authority.
Deja Vu
Added Sat Feb 8 12:10:01 2014 at level 51:
"You see, that's a many years old case." - the official was looking at me
funny. I was positive he wouldn't recognize me with the eyepatch and my hair
changed, but I was still uncomfortable. "There's... a hefty interest that
has accrued over the years into a similarly hefty sum."
"You clearly..." I cut myself short. There was no interest, could not be.
It was just this man's way of asking for a bribe. "How much?"
He grinned wickedly. "Add to that a compensation for the destruction of
property within Hamsah bounds, and numerous fines..." He showed me another
parchment, full of some freshly-prepared records.
"For what? How can you charge an imprisoned person with that?"
"Oh, sir, that's not for her, it's to repay the... efforts... of her closest
relative. If you haven't heard of Nalaya Egeria, sir, then I think you can't
claim to be the cousin wanting to redeem a relative's debt."
I grit my teeth. They knew! This all looked like a farce. "So how much?"
"It looks like just under a thousand gold coins, good sir."
The bulk of my savings. As bank receipts changed hands, many things occupied
my mind. At least I had means to ensure nobody was going back on the deal.
