Description
The figure standing before you reaches over six feet in height, clad in a
highly polished, if somewhat old-fashioned suit of black plate mail. A symbol
of the scales of justice is emblazoned on a gray surcoat worn over his
breastplate. His helmet is sewn together from dragonscales with an open face,
beneath which you see that he is a dark elf. His face is gaunt and pale,
blue-black skin stretched taut across craggy features. Yellow eyes look out
from deep pits either side of a crooked nose. His movements are economic,
almost laboured and you hear an unhealthy rasp in his voice. He can most
often be seen bearing an expression somewhere between a sneer and a smirk.
Role
Background
Added Sun Oct 28 10:36:13 2012 at level 28:
Eldrinoth was the son of a merchant from the Underdark, and was often taken
on his fathers expiditions to the surface. His mother preferred the
subterranean pleasures of the drow city and cared little for her son.
Merchant life was not without its difficulties, his fathers caravan would
often be targeted by bandits. Surface rulers were unsympathetic to the
problem, mistrusting the undersiders, and he practiced a variety of magical
and martial techniques to help scare away any would-be robbers, the more
vicious the better. However one night after having completed a trade, they
were set upon by a paladin. Full of righteous anger he cut down the helpless
dark elves left and right, proclaiming the glory of the light.
Eldrinoth escaped and fled back to the underworld, but was not content with
the callous dismissal his family gave to the incident. What did they care for
the lost lives? His mother had plenty of other lovers besides. He was
determined to make his will felt and returned to the surface world
He sees criminals as his natural enemies and is interested in accumulating
wealth and powerful items. He at least mildly dislikes most oversiders, and
thinks that his kin should be involved in the meting out of justice in the
surface cities. He has a deep hatred of paladins, who he finds offensive and
insufferable, and will take any opportunity to question their motives and
behaviour. Though he sometimes plays the victim to a paladin when a fight
does not go his way, he would do much worse if given the opportunity.
Finding the shrine
Added Thu Nov 1 12:07:27 2012 at level 29:
Trying to wrangle his way into the spire is taking Eldrinoth just as long as
he suspected. One of the things he's been doing in the meanwhile is
exploring. He has discovered the shrines of several different gods, but none
impressed him as well as the shrine of Enlilth. Having consulted the
libraries, he sees in Enlilth a god who he could follow, who sets an example
for his own secret greed and lust for power.
journal
Added Sat Dec 1 07:54:30 2012 at level 42:
It has been a long road to this point. I have lived almost two hundred years,
and in the last ten or so my fortunes have changed. After having been pledged
to the service of the Blood Tribunal for a human lifetime or more, having
seen others with the same ambitions come and go, patiently honing my skills,
I have finally been granted the authority of a Magistrate, which those of
less reviled races are gain with comparative ease. I have been posted to
Hamsah Mu'tazz, right between the Imperial lands and the Chasm, where I
expect a good deal of action. There have been incidents already. The Empire
continues to consider me an ally, and I have had some muted dealings with
Scions. I have struck up a friendship of sorts with another adventuring dark
elf. I have provided her with some equipment and knowledge, she has called me
her mentor. In truth I have little idea of where her allegiances lie. I would
not be surprised if one day she turned on me, I might be disappointed if she
did not. The camaraderie has paid dividends however, as she helped lead me to
my sleek black rod.
I have now attained to such a rank in my guild that the gods allow me to
fight with the mightiest heroes of the land. My vitality is ebbing fast
already. I shall have to proceed from here with far greater caution than I
have used thus far in my life, though paradoxically also with greater haste.
Allies are essential to me now, lest I be stranded and exterminated by the
warriors of the brigade before my power can blossom to its fullest extent.
They have no mercy and no heed for the law. It will take all my craft and
tenacity to survive this last brutal stretch.
Fears of a final death
Added Wed Dec 5 12:16:33 2012 at level 45:
Though I continue to strive, I fear my final death is close at hand. Whenever
I make progress toward advancing it is snatched away by some mistake or some
piece of ill-luck. Added to this are the swarms of hostile enemies and their
never slaked bloodthirst. I am hunted by outlanders, villagers, paladins,
even scions. I could often find allies within the Empire but none of my
erstwhile comrades have survived so long. Without divine intervention I will
soon join their numbers. This is particularly distressing, as I have plans
for when I can compete with my enemies on something like an even footing..
The state of Thera
Added Wed Dec 5 12:18:07 2012 at level 45:
For too long the champions of light have enjoyed an easy dominion over Thera.
They strike the scattered few dark souls who dare to walk the surface with
reckless impunity, and have little to fear from them. The so called 'Empire'
is crumbling. What use is an Empire without soldiers? The Fortress honours
courage, but I see naught courageous in what amounts on their part to little
more than pest control. They see us as animals to be exterminated. I have
lived hoping to champion the darkness, to gain power enough that others might
rise beneath the shadow I cast.
Fraught ambitions
Added Wed Dec 5 12:20:34 2012 at level 45:
To this end I have had two great ambitions in life. First, to be accepted
into the spire as magistrate, second to attain to the pinnacle of my guild.
The first of these I achieved, though it took patience beyond what most
mortals could aspire to. This precedent I set has already borne fruit. Once
the provost appointed me magistrate, he went ahead and appointed a second
antipaladin with similar ambitions. Though it was be no means easy, the
second goal of mine will be perhaps yet more difficult. I long for the day
when I can do more in battle than simply hope to escape with my life. I pray
that the day will come. I would devote myself to the service of any of the
Gods who allowed me such a chance.
The Bargain
Added Fri Dec 7 14:01:44 2012 at level 51:
I have completed my training at last. Never again will I have to face
opponents more advanced in their guilds. At last, I am on some kind of an
even footing. Almost. I heard a dark voice speak, offering in whispers
promises of more life. Of course, every such bargain has a price. This
entity, my new patron demands that I bring him souls. A technique taught by
my guildmaster, but not as yet practiced by myself. The price of failiure
will be severe, but the task will not be straightforward. I must arm myself
properly, and gather appropriate protections for one. For another I must find
my foe. Thus far, they have come to me. It has been I who was hunted. I
wonder if that will change. Conflict is never far away. For now I prepare
myself, so that I may better do my new lords work when the oppurtunities
arise. With my old goals achieved, my new ones take their place.
