Description
Thick. All fire giants have size, a stature that commands respect just from
their dark enormity, but this male evokes the word thick as if his magic
had imbued him with a mountainous solidity, a breadth and span to his
features that conjures words like 'foundation' at the sight of his legs
and 'bulwark' when viewing his muscular torso. His shoulders would fill
all but the widest of doorframes, and the angles of his jaw and brow
are heavy and strong yet do not convey a sense of brutish stupidity
beyond the norm. In fact, the movement of his hands, even the focus of his
gaze, might lead a careful observer to think of culture and poise, even
refinement. His nose and set of his mouth are regal, and his dark red
hair flows from his head and spills onto his shoulders like the infernal
flows of Kiadana but with the beauty of cherry blossoms blown on the wind.
His personal effects, though mismatched and aged, suggest a strict
maintenance schedule, and the buckles sparkle and leather straps smell of
of fresh oil. You also notice

How the Game is Played (Part 1)

Beginnings
''Nothing in my hand. Nothing up my sleeve.'' The young boy -- not a small boy, for he was a
fire giant -- the young boy's hands glided over the three cards set out over the makeshift
table, deftly picking them up and dropping them in a whirl before his audience's eyes.
''Place your bet, good Sir Knight. Find the golden lady and claim your prize.''
The unmistakable ring of gold caught the ears and eyes of those near the cask where the
game of chance was being played. The unshaven mercenary leaned in to leer at the giant,
his breath reeking of rum and rot. ''Kin yuh cover that bet, shytebird?''
''Ah, the pure song of Seantryn Modan, the golden likeness of the southern queen
herself, as fair and fine as the day she was made.'' The boy was fair-featured, as far
as giants go, but stouter, like the stump of an ancient banyan or the base of a rocky
hill. His hair was pulled back in a dark mass with auburn highlights, and his quick
smile showed broad white teeth that caught the eye and might make a weak man
uneasy. ''Aye, Sir Knight, and that is a brave bet you have made. And because I
like you, I am going to give you a chance--nay, an opportunity--to change your
wager after this fortuitous gust of wind--''
At that the boy quickly leaned in and blew a puff of air under a card, flipping it
over for all to see. ''--has revealed that one of the unselected cards was the Squire
of Swords.'' He straightened, and leaning toward the hired soldier, ''And with this
new bit of intelligence, good Sir Knight, would you wish to increase your wager?
Or if yours is a fickle fancy, change your bet to the other card?''
The man reached into his pocket and produced another gold coin which danced
upon the table. The young giant put a pile of silver down to cover his side of the
bet. ''Gather close, my merry band, and look to see which of us shall dine as kings
this night!''

The boy reached for the coins and the cards, but like the flash of thought the mercenary
drew his dagger and plunged it through the card he had selected and into the oak cask.
The man nodded to the remaining card. ''Lift that one, yuh whoreson, an ifn that not
bein the lady, then the lady must be dancin under my blade and under my money.''
The boy stared for a moment at the dagger inches from his hand. ''You do not seem to
understand how this game is played, good Sir Knight. But let me adjust to your outlandish
ways.'' He then called out to the crowd. ''Lords and ladies, our gallant knight has taken
our friendly game to a whole new level. Let us see how this plays out. But first, gather
close, and I shall contemplate the cards from his perspective.''
The street folk closed in, and with them the smell of fish and sweat and summer congealed
in the air around the unfolding drama. The boy held his hands far away from the barrel, and moving
in a slow circle he edged the soldier away from the makeshift table. The man cuffed the boy
alongside the head. but the giant ignored him. ''I see, yes,'' said the boy. ''Go ahead and
flip your card. I am afraid you have won this round.''
The soldier flipped that card, revealing the Page of Cups. ''Fargin 'ells I did, yuh big
dumb bastard. You ain pullin one over on Jinny Cobb, you ain!'' He scooped up the
pile of coins and thrust them into his pocket. He was still gloating when the boy
crouching at his boots stood suddenly, knocking the mercenary into the crowd, and a dozen
hands caught him and shoved him back onto his feet.

The soldier pulled his knife from the barrel and brandished it at the boy. ''I'm gonner
nip your ear for that one, boy.''
The giant dodged the first lunge and rolled under the wheels of a wagon, but the mercenary
was quicker and caught a pantleg to pin the boy's left foot between the spokes. He
placed his dagger's edge against the boy's throat. ''Yuh ain getting away so easy as that.''
''Here here! Stand down!'' A patrolman pushed his way through the circle, which parted
only with protest and the threat of the a mailed gauntlet. ''What seems to be going on here?''
''Mind your own,'' said the mercenary as he drew his sword. ''I gotter swindler to teacher
a lesson to.''
The patrolman blew his whistle and drew his own sword. ''I will not tolerate murder on
my watch.''
''I'll close yer eyes then,'' said the soldier. He thrust his sword toward the city guard, but
he staggered and fell as goose feathers sprung from his throat. He fell to the cobblestones,
gurgling in his blood, and then was silent.
The rest of the patrol moved in, quickly dispersing the crowd. The giant barely heeded
the small hand that pressed four gold coins and the giant's wagered silver back into his
hand. His partner disappeared down the alley without a whisper.
''Thank you,'' said the boy. ''My name is Eletar.''
''I was just doing my job. Now move along or you'll end up on the cart with this fool.''
The boy looked at the city guard and the dead mark before walking down the alley toward
the hovel where he rented a room. He would find a way, he decided. He would find a way.
Eletar the Noble Lord
Added Thu Jun 5 21:02:29 2014 at level 27:
Eletar sees himself as the hero within his own story, a feudal lord who governs and
protects the fief from the incursions of chaos that have plagued civilization throughout
history. The dark magics he has embraced are a burden he bears to improve the lives of
the average citizen in his charge. Those whose souls are one day claimed by his blades
will be the very real power to protect his people, and he foolishly hopwa may one day be
recovered from his blade by the gods when they are ready to embrace civilized behavior.
In his view, Eletar is beneficent. A lord must be willing to use threats, guile, and violence
if he is to maintain governance. To be a statesman he must be a student of rhetoric, a
patron of the ballroom, and an artist bearing the palette and wielding the brush of an
assassin. To this end young Eletar served in the court of the Seantryn Empress, and
when he was not on duty, he spent his earnings on instruction with whomever would
teach him a skill he might find useful in his later years.
