Description

The figure before you stands roughly normal height for a human male. He wears a mis-matched set of armor, and beneath that, from what you can tell, loose black clothing. While his face is mostly concealed, you are able to make out dark brown eyes peeking out from eyeslits that his clothing affords him. What little you can see of his skin seems darker than the fair-haired folk you've seen around, but not nearly as dark as some. It has a hint of a yellow hue to its tan - somewhat exotic. In terms of his build and musculature, his armor and loose clothing make it difficult to tell, though when he moves he does so with a sort of graceful ease that might escape an overly muscled human. Wearing that much armor, however, tells a tale of one who is not some frail weakling, either.

Role

The truth of this existence

Imagine if you discovered that your entire life was a lie. Not the
pedestrian deception of a lover's tryst, nor that of a parent who
had adopted you rather than birthing you - no. No imagine that the
lie was that you truly existed.

Whether by the curse of some gypsy, a cruel joke by one of the Gods,
a sharp blow to the head as a youth, or some other inconsequential
and equally unlikely turn of events, Enhal has learned that Thera is
not "real."

He is not fully aware of everything, of course. He does not know the
true nature of his existence. Perhaps he is just the dream of a giant
elder god creature. Perhaps he is a chess piece on a giant board, moved
by an invisible hand.

Whatever the full truth is, there is one thing he does know. None of
this faux-existence truly matters. This strange form of nihilism has
given Enhal a jaded view of the values of others. "Do you walk in the
Light?" "Do you use magic?" "Do you follow our laws?" All meaningless
questions intended to determine Enhal's status as friend or foe. Why
not ask the question as it is truly intended - "If I wish to kill you,
do my own self-imposed rules allow me to do so?"

It is with the above in mind that I ask you to consider Enhal's life,
actions, and ambitions, such as they are.

The blind choosing not to lead the blind

Enhal learned at an early age not to share his unique perspective 
with anyone. The first and only time he attempted it, he was
initially ridiculed. As he persisted, those he had attempted to
convince turned to violence to quell his speech. He was savagely
beaten. As the blows rained down, though, he could see it. Fear.

Not fear of him, nor of reprisal or consequences - fear that he
might be right. That their lives were truly as empty and void
of meaning as he had claimed. They were beating him to turn off
the nagging voice in their own head that said he might be right.

Bringing silence with violence. That was another lesson he learned
that day. 

And now he lives on with a twisted, ironic sense of importance. 
This life is a lie, and he is the only one that knows it. How 
sane is the most sane man in an asylum filled with the insane?
How wise is the least foolish of a den of complete and utter fools?
So too does Enhal see himself. Least blind of the blind. 

No longer does he feel any reason to share his 'gift' - this
inspiration (divine or otherwise) is his alone, and he will 
keep it as his own.

While Enhal has decided to keep the crux of his knowledge to himself,
he has found a loosely-bound group of like-minded individuals in the
Cult of the Scarab. The Cultists have a deep religious belief system,
but the heart of it lies close to Enhal's own heart. Following your own
Will seems natural when you feel that nothing in the world truly matters
anyway. Why would you not?

His discussion with the Voice, Gemmurra, was long-delayed, but that was
for the better. Enhal had, by the time of their speaking, embraced each
of the five lessons within the Scarabite Catechism. This seemed to suitably
impress the Voice, and he was admitted into the Temple forthwith.

The why of things

While Enhal was sitting in a darkened corner of a tavern, a drunken
fool approached and took a seat without asking, heedless of the dark
brown eyes that glared at him with disdain. He asked Enhal what he
"stood for" and looked at him balefully when Enhal did not answer.

As his intended victim had no doubt noticed the actions of the drunk,
Enhal gave up his stalking and shifted his focus to the buffoon in
front of him. He considered for a moment, and then decided to teach
the man of the Truth of existence as he knew it. He had nothing to
fear from this wine-soaked simpleton. Why not?

The man's eyes grew wider as Enhal explained the lie of existence,
the alcohol perhaps giving him more clarity than most would ever
know. The telling did not take long, and when Enhal had finished,
the man blustered a bit about how Enhal surely could not be right,
and if he was, then the question still stood, only moreso - why
fight at all, if it is all a meaningless lie?

And so Enhal began a short story...

The tuft of grass

"When I was just beginning my training as an assassin, I happened
upon a man who was hanging from the side of a steep cliff. He was
slipping, and could not find purchase with his boots to stop his
slow slide toward the edge. First his belly, then more and more of
him began to slide over the edge. He scrabbled in the dry dirt with
his hands, searching for something, anything to grab onto, so that
he might escape his grisly fate."

The drunk nodded, leaning in with interest as Enhal told his tale.

"At last, his left hand found something to grip. A tiny tuft of grass,
its roots barely able to stay in the arid soil against a stiff breeze.
The man shifted his right hand to also clutch at the useless weed."

Enhal chuckled darkly. "He had to know it would give way, and yet he
gripped it as hard as life itself."

The drunk, sobering up slightly, asked "Did you save him?"

Enhal rolled his eyes at the completely missed point and drove his
dagger into the man's eyesocket. Wiping the blood on the coat of the
drunk, Enhal stood and walked out without a backward glance.

Why the Eye?

Enhal has been searching for Father Scarabaeus for some time, to find out
what might be required of him to be named the Eye of the Scarab. But why
pursue such an avenue at all? If nothing truly matters, why aspire to
such a lofty goal? The "why" of continuing to live at all has been explained
in earlier chapters, but why...try?

A fair question. A difficult thing to put a finger on. Why indeed? 
Perhaps one might say it is out of boredom or a "lack of something better to do" but no.
No, that is not it. A play for Power? Unlikely. The Eye of the Scarab is hardly the Emperor
of the Empire, after all (much to the better, that).

No, the true answer lies somewhere in the heart of what the Eye represents, and
the art of Enhal's guild that is most challenging and therefore most interesting.
The art of observation. Watching, waiting patiently, and then seizing the moment with
a single, silent strike. It intrigues Enhal in a way that regular combat does not.

Any simpleton can throw a foe to the ground repeatedly, especially once you've
broken the wrists and arms of that foe. But to grace and elegance of a successful
assassination...that is something worth living for.

And the Eye. Well, the Eye of the Scarab is not the Flame of Destruction, nor the
Voice of Truth about the Way of things. No, the Eye is the search for Purity,
and, perhaps, the patience to wait for the right time to excise that which is
impure.

So, Enhal prays, and sends missives, hoping that the Father will take note
and, if not make him the Eye of the Scarab, perhaps educate him on what he
must do to prove his worth to eventually become it.
