Description

This man is very tall, and thin. His face is mature but angelic and boyish, the face a mother would love. His mouth has a near permanently etched, soft and welcoming smile. Blonde, near white hair shows from under a round, black, bowler hat. His eyes are a beautiful blue but contain the warmth of the hearth within their set. They are, however, locked wide and unmoving, like he should be screaming, crows feet forming at the edges. He is dressed head to toe in black, with a stiff, choker collar around his neck. A short white tie adorning the front. From the collar down his clothes are a neatly presented black coat, that ends roughly shin height. Black socks run down to black, shiny shoes from there. As he smiles at you, you notice his left hand, held slightly to the side with fingers pointing upwards, has small puffs of smoke, fire, and arcs of lightning running across the fingertips.

The Beginnings of Loss Part 1

Added Sat Sep 27 07:25:46 2025 at level 1:
She woke with a start, in the night. What was different? What had roused her?
Her eyes registered nothing, no moon hit the windows, and no candles were lit.
Why was that strange? Had they left shuttered lamps when they went to their
beds? She reached out across the bed and found....nothing? Her husband was not
there. An unfamiliar feeling in the ten years they had been married. The bed
was cold, how had she not woken? What was strange?

What was wrong?

The smell. What was that smell? It was acrid, like they hadn't shuttered the
iron stove that evening. Had they not? It felt vague, clouded. The smell was
too strong, like she was rendering tallow. Fear began to knot and grip in her
stomach. The children. If the smell meant fire, she had to get to the
children.

She felt her way to the door of her bedroom and pushed against the door. It
resisted and creaked. It was freezing. With effort, it squealed open breaking
the silence for the first time. Nothing returned to the sound.

There was no glow and no smoke. She felt her way now forward through the small
hall to the children's bedroom, panic rising in her stomach. Her happy boys,
Thoramias, twelve, and Evalius, eight years old. Their house was safe, it was
quiet. Why did it feel so wrong?

She reached the bedroom and felt for the jam. The door was open. As she felt
her way into the room, the cold deepened. How could it be so cold? Winter had
not come yet. She fumbled for the lamp and struck the flint, the flare of the
light blinding her temporarily, she raised a hand to it, blinking.

As the flare faded, the horror set in. Sitting in his bed, bolt up, a look of
terror permanently frozen onto his face was Thoramias. His eyes were open, his
mouth wide, a scream that never came. He was frozen solid. No.

No, no, no...NO. She began to wail. No, this wasn't happening, this was a
nightmare. She had dreamed this, but this was when she woke. Why wasn't she
awake? Her wail grew from the pit of her stomach and rose to the deep,
mournful sound of complete loss. What was happening?

As she ached with the complete madness of the sight of her boy, something
snapped her back. A sound now, where before there had been nothing but her
movements. Her grief.

The Beginnings of Loss Part 2

Added Sat Sep 27 07:26:57 2025 at level 1:
Mother?
The sweet voice of Evalius. Partial relief where she had felt the incredible
loss. Picking up the lamp she stumbled, tears and night blindness clouding
her, for the sound. Towards the common area the house shared alongside the
bedrooms. She almost didn't notice the smell intensifying.

Mother. Whats wrong?
She raised the lantern and saw Evalius sitting at their table in his night
clothes. His near white golden hair shining as the lamp passed over him.

"Evalius. I am dreaming, tell me I'm dreaming. Your brother...what happened to
your brother."

Evalius smiled warmly, the same smile that had always melted her heart now
froze it.

"I took his dreams away. He dreamed too deeply and too often. Sometimes he
would touch mine and the shadows would frighten him. Now, he doesn't dream.
Isn't he lucky?"

A sense of relief mixed with her terror. This made no sense, this was a dream
after all. Touching dreams? Taking them away? It was madness.

Her lantern swayed and took in a dark shadow at the end of the table she
hadn't noticed. It appeared to her to hiss and recoil from the light,
shrinking until it resolved into....her husband? What was he doing silent at
the table. She lifted the lantern to his face.

The smell. This was the smell. His face was gone, skin blackened and sucked
onto hollow cheeks. Eyes melted like so much honey and running down his face.
Her breath came in rapid gasps now. No, no, no....this dream was unlike any
she'd had.

"Father couldn't bear the sight of Thoramias. So I took his sight away. He
didn't need it. So I took it. You understand, don't you?"

She collapsed to the floor, silent sobs wracking her. Why was she having this
dream? What was it so REAL?

She looked up. Evalius stood at her side.

"Mother. I can take your pain too. The shadows in my dreams showed me how. It
will only hurt for a second and then you'll be something new."

He bent down at her side, his angelic face nose to nose with her.

"I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you. When you melt, it's only here. Not
there."

He stood up, closed his eyes and hummed. A shadow, deeper than the rest
swirled in a circle above her and opened slowly, then quickly. Liquid flooded
from it, splashing her face and steaming as it began eating the flesh. She
screamed, briefly, and then was no more.

A Cheerful Boy, Surrounded by Tragedy

Added Sat Sep 27 15:33:27 2025 at level 4:
Evalius grew up north of Hamsah Mu'Tazz, an orphan. He had lost his parents
and his older brother in tragedy. A fire, ferocious and fast tore through
their house one night leaving nothing behind. No body to bury, no memento of
his past to carry. Such things were not uncommon in these lands.

Despite his personal tragedy, Evalius' disposition was one of positivity. He
was a cheerful and encouraging boy. The custodians of the orphanage saw him as
their ideal. A boy who despite his personal tragedy, knew that he was where he
was and only, he could make the best of that now. Even though just a boy, he
could even form views many philosophers would not reach in a genuine way.

If his tragedy hadn't occurred, he would not be enjoying the life he had now,
with the people he had now. He would not be able to comfort his friend
Erothil, who had arrived at the orphanage six months after him, her parents
tragically struck by the lightning of a freak storm where the sky appeared
cloudless. Or young Ovalum, who just this past month had lost fisherman father
to a freak wave and loving move to the earth shaking and bring their small
house down on her head.

He was cheerful and helpful. The losses they had all felt were a tragedy, yes.
But they were a new beginning.

Power and Freedom 1

Added Wed Oct 1 05:45:40 2025 at level 21:
Evalius sat in his guild, repetitively filling and emptying his canteen.
Filling and emptying. Some might see it as a chore. He usually saw it as
meditative, his mind blank except for the task. But this time he indulged,
casting his mind back to the weeks and months before he left the orphanage,
striking out on his own.

He had formed strong trauma bonds with Erothil and Ovalum. Although obviously
all the children had lost their parents, Evalius went out of his way to
comfort these two, helping them on their journey. They were true friends,
willing to do anything for him. Put themselves in harm's way in a yard scrap,
pilfer an extra sausage or share the intel they gathered in their networks. It
was fun, they were kids.

He valued them deeply too. He owned precious little since the fire, a few
books, some clothes, and a rather nice glass lens he used for studying insects
and the like he'd won in the school's rhetoric tournament. But by far his most
prized possessions were Erothil and Ovalum.

The shadows spoke to him every evening in his dreams. Never in waking hours,
he did not hallucinate. He wasn't crazy. But never a night passed without some
sort of communication. Most often it was the calm and measured instruction of
a tutor. Explaining how he might call forth the elements, the words and
movements needed. Over and over, repetition The tutors didn't explain anything
more than this. This was what was necessary.

But every so often the tutors were replaced with whispering shadows that
filled his mind with images. Images of bones at his feet, stripped clean of
flesh by purifying fire. Or puddles of flesh melted from the bone with
torrents of acid. They whispered of the great things an adept of the elements
could have for themselves. More and more tools in his kit, the ability to call
forth pillars of lighting on a cloudless night or blast apart rock as if it
were paper.

They whispered of a time he would with them in the night, his true family. The
family that had gifted him with the abilities to wash clean the flesh and
blood holding him back. The family that would be with him for all time. The
showed him images of the world burning in his fire, or stripped to bare rock
by his ice. On those nights it would always end the same way, a giant, black
sun wreathed in dark red flames sinking to the horizon of these barren worlds.
And the darkness.

None of this was for anyone but him. He knew that instinctively.

Power and Freedom 2

Added Wed Oct 1 05:48:54 2025 at level 21:
On the last night before he left the orphanage, they were different. The
shadows that whispered came but this time they were screaming. Urging him. He
had mastered what he needed to, he could take the next step in his evolution.
But he couldn't take anything with him. And he couldn't leave anything behind.
The dream showed him many things and asked him many things. What would the
acid he'd learnt to secrete from his hands do to human skin? Why didn't he
know yet? What would happen to the building if he shook its foundations? Why
didn't he know yet? In the end, it finished the same way. A black sun. But the
screams of the shadows reached a crescendo and he started awake.

Not yet dawn. He felt like he hadn't slept but like he was charged with an
energy that had been building his whole life. He knew what he needed to do. He
rose from his bed and went to stand over Ovlaum. His face was peaceful in the
half life, he slept soundly. He gently took his hand, holding it tenderly. He
sent the charge that had built up him coursing through his arm and into the
body, watching as it violently, but silently, spasmed and went limp. Smoke
tendrils gently rising.

He crossed the room to Erothil, who slept with the blankets covering his face.
He'd always slept that way. Evalius built within his hands a torrent of
powerful acid and sprayed it forth over the sleeping form. Erothil began to
stir as the liquid hit him, more rapidly as the smell and sound roused him. It
quickly stripped away the thin blankets he slept in, into his clothes before
making it to his skin.

He sat bolt upright in bed, shock already registering as his face began to
sizzle and distort. He locked eyes with Evalius, the panic in his eyes
exaggerated as the skin began to slough slightly. Finally, he found voice and
screamed.

"My friend, there is nothing to fear." His voice gave out, and the scream
gurgled away, either because of the words or through the damage being done to
his body. " I could not take you with me and I could not leave you alone, to
the torments of this place. What kind of monster would I be if I did not
relieve you of this...fragility. You are FREE. And in your freedom, I take my
own."

Erothil's no longer recognisable form slumped back into the bed, ooze
dribbling down. The rest of the home was awake now, rising from beds and
lighting lanterns. Evalius snapped his fingers and disappeared from sight in a
flash of flame, before anyone could make him out. He calmly walked out of the
room, out of the house, to escalating sounds of dismay. Without turning back,
he closed his eyes, mouthed some words and the whole house trembled before it
collapsed in on itself, sinking into the ground and becoming silent.

He smiled, breathed in and heaved a sigh of release. He had never felt freer.
The shadows helped foster him and his power. He'd go now, and claim it fully.

He snapped back to the present, smiling. Fill canteen, empty canteen...

Myriad Sources of Loss

Added Sun Oct 5 06:04:29 2025 at level 25:
Evalius mused on his recent experiences as he practiced his skills in
shattering granite and clay golems.

He had much experience inducing great loss in others, taking from them and
dramatically altering the course of their life. He had experience with loss
himself, his parents and brother having tragically perished. But he saw loss
in others manifest in myriad ways.

A recent run in with a dwarven warrior priest played on his mind. The dwarf
lost his sword in the first encounter, Evalius' grease liberating it and it
eventually ending up in the hands of a weapon vendor in Hamsah. The second
encounter occurred with the dwarf scouring the ground for his lost sword, not
accepting its loss.

It was fascinating. The loss of the sword had occurred in an attempt to free
the dwarf from his flesh with the elements. The attachment drove the dwarf out
to risk the same experience. Rather than accepting the loss and moving
forward, he had put his life at risk for something already gone. But perhaps
it was the loss of the sword that would drive him to the opportunity for
greater loss. Perhaps the loss of the sword was too small, perhaps that loss
would drive the dwarf directly into a more defining loss?

What drove these small minded beings on to make their decisions was
intellectually interesting. Whether their own lessons in loss made a
difference to them was anyone's guess. But the shadows assured him, every loss
drove him closer to walking under that final, blood red sunset.

On Eternal Night (A Note Sent to the Scions)

Added Thu Oct 23 15:28:23 2025 at level 38:
I present to you my workings on purifying darkness in order to bring on
eternal night.

**Theory**

Materials of great darkness possess the ability to trap light within
themselves, effectively sucking it in and removing it from the world. The
darker the material, the less it is likely to let light escape it. I posit
that with ever increasing volumes of dark materials, one can trap evermore
light, eventually bringing eternal night.

Further, I posit that the greater the metaphorical darkness of the ashes, the
greater the ability of the material to trap light and the greater the absolute
shift in the land towards eternal night.

**Experimentation**

To this end, I have conducted a practical experiment. Using my abilities as an
elemental mage I burned the following live specimens and gathered their ashes:

First - seven human children of an orphanage, mixed gender.
Second - two novice knights of the basilica, dedicated to the cause of the
light. Third - the ashes of Jolinar, the emissary of the triumvirate, a
fixture of the temple of holy light in Voralian City.

With their ashes carefully gathered to avoid impurities, I combined them and
scorched them with the power of the sun again, to further reduce and leech
them of remaining colour. I had now a substantial pouch of pure black ash,
crafted from pure souls.

My next step was to use the ashes to paint a large, black sun, mirroring that
which will eventually set for eternity. To have the most effect, I painted
this sigil on the gates of the Fortress of Light. My hope was this sigil would
draw enough light in to act as a gate for the shadow realm. I finished the
approximately eight foot in diameter sigil as the sun set.

**Further Research**

Unfortunately, in this instance, my beckoning did not have the desired effect,
but I remain confident more study in this area is needed. My immediate areas
of investigation and interest are:

1.Greater numbers of and more powerful souls. Like the weapon of an
anti-paladin, I believe their may be value in creating an ash base that
contains the power of more pure souls.

2.Experimentation with sigils. I would seek out learned scholars that know of
sigils with great meaning and purpose, beyond my black sun.

3.A source of scorching that is dark in and of itself. Unfortunately, my
ability to burn comes with a great amount of light being given off. If I could
find a source of black, hot flame, I may be able to create ashes even darker.

Peace, Darkness and Loss

Added Fri Nov 7 20:01:19 2025 at level 41:
Evalius feels further enlightened and sure of his place in the world as his
magic grows. He seeks to join the Scions of Eternal Night to completely
harness the power of the shadows that have whispered to him his whole life. As
his discussed with Dondonxa, Queen of the Goblin Court, he is not foolish
enough to have ever believed he is favoured by the shadows. In him they found
a useful tool to interact with the world they seek to dominate. Through his
guile and will, he seeks to turn the influence to his favour, binding the
shadow to his will.

Evalius seeks to bring an ever-lasting night to Thera through burning and
twisting ever more of the light and natural opposition to the dark within it.
He refers to this as peace on Thera. And though he would reign over that ever
lasting "peace" and darkness, he keeps that from those he seeks to help
through purification. He shares that piece of himself only with his fellow
travellers, other Scions and pledges to their cause.

Evalius pursues his goals with a desire to create devastating loss. Loss of
light will come with eternal night. Loss of the will that binds those to
resist the inevitability of eternal night will come as he grows in power. As
he breaks the chains of desire for love, conventional power, wealth, from
those that scurry across Thera, their will to resist Eternal Night will be
lost. It is through these musings, his travels and his research that Evalius
became aware of the God of Loss and Secrets, Rahsael. He seeks to commune with
this God to learn more of the art of Loss.

Gathering Ashes

Added Fri Nov 7 20:02:09 2025 at level 41:
He has continued his search for dark and powerful ashes, to open gates to the
night and feed darkened flames. He hopes to learn sigils of the night from the
Scions to further his aims.

First, he burned a hundred Arendyl Elves of the past. The screams of so many
elves, born and walking in the light, alone was enough to derive voluminous
and dark ashes. But that was not his only goal. He theorised, burning such a
large volume of light in the past must have the effect of exponentially
darkening the future.

Second, he burned the corpse of a aspirant villager storm giant, named
Yormdir. The mindless villagers that infested the road between Galadon and
Hamsah were a copper for a dozen. But this one came from the light. Evalius
lured him to his pit, froze him to death and burnt his corpse. After the
battle, as he explained what a gift the giant had been given, it whined that
had it been given power from the Gods, this would never have happened. Evalius
tasted the ashes and labelled them appropriately. Bitter and dry.
