Description
This old felar looks like he has been through a lot in his life. Looking at
his orange coat, dulled and darkened from age, one may see patches of gray
hair marking old wounds. His face is crossed by two nasty scars, giving him
a slightly sinister look, but otherwise there's very little threat in his
appearance. He is lean and short, barely over four and a half feet, and he
seems to have a lively demeanor, sometimes even to the point of anxiety.
Role
Life story so far
Added Sat Jan 29 22:37:29 2011 at level 1:
Fae comes from the Past. He does not remember where he was born - probably
it is now beyond reach anyway. He grew up as a slave in Ostalagiath - these
memories he would rather forget, but cannot. Having gone from one master to
another many times, he was eventually sold to a wizard from present Thera,
who thought it fun to bring the fellow back with him through void of time.
Thus Fae is very respectful of wizards, especially once he has seen some of
his own kin learn the ways of magic. He eventually parted ways with the one
who rescued him, and has settled in Galadon of the present time, looking to
lead the life of a free adventurer and look for what else life has to offer.
Thieves' guild
Added Sun Jan 30 08:37:45 2011 at level 17:
It was a pleasure to see what Galadonian settlement of his time has become
over the ages. Although, while Galadon was a fine city, certainly worth
living in and good as a base of operations, what Fae really did want was to
be among his kin. Thus he opted for joining the thieves' guild of Blackclaw
village, famous for its knowledge of traps.
Fae did not intend to become a trapper, however. Neither poisoner or thug -
making people die wasn't really his pleasure of the day. So he has decided
to do his training elsewhere, while living in Blackclaw as a member of the
guild. More opportunities will show themselves once he grows in rank.
More to learn
Added Wed Feb 2 21:02:38 2011 at level 29:
Things were favorable for him once again, as he found that most major thief
guilds currently had an alliance agreement. Deft and quick to learn, he
benefitted the most, going many places with his new allies, being curious
and asking a lot, subtly and not so subtly trying to catch the big picture
of the world he was now living in.
Faeshu would want to learn more, and make his own opinion on every force in
Thera. For example, he found it very unjust that Blackclaw wasn't part of
Tribunal's jurisdiction. His kin deserved protection no less then humans.
So Faeshu noted for himself to be vigilant and look after his new hometown.
He deemed it only natural for every member of the thieves' guild.
Sadly, he found that Blackclaw guild was quite weak, and on top of that,
ruled by someone clearly not belonging here - not even a felar, in fact.
Faeshu doubted that the Spymaster cared about the town as much as a felar
would. He did however look after the guild itself. He was the one to make
peace with other guilds. So, since Faeshu always tried to judge people based
on what he knew for sure, he decided for now to just wait and learn more.
Well, it was that way until he has seen the Spymaster on wanted list...
Advancement
Added Fri Feb 4 07:54:32 2011 at level 41:
When Faeshu said jokingly that once he learns acrobatics, he'll be able to
perform at the Inn of the Eternal Star, the thought didn't escape his mind
long after. However, it turned out his view on Heralds was a bit different,
he did not believe in entertainment for its own sake, but rather thought
that every story and song should have some meaning, some value for drawing
people's souls towards what is right. So while the idea pleased him briefly,
he set it aside to pursue more immediate affairs.
Having studied the acrobatic art, he had some more of his tasks unfinished -
one of them, find the way to make enough money for his guild without having
to put his morals aside. For that, he needed contacts with smugglers to be
able to sell his adventuring loot more reliably.
Alas, developing contacts in every major city was going to be difficult
for someone of Faeshu's rank. Thankfully, with the help of his friends he
got to learn quite a bit of abilities, so as to look more formidable and
to provide what people would ask of him. This would help gain their trust.
The Spymaster did not show himself much. Faeshu, on the other side, has
been to the Underdark and truly seen some of the ways of duergar, to whom
his guild leader happened to belong... this left him thinking more and more
about how to seize control of Blackclaw guild so he can truly care for his
new hometown. He didn't know yet if he might be able to achieve such feat,
but planned to start collecting money soon.
Tenets of the Light
Added Mon Feb 7 06:45:47 2011 at level 43:
It was a failure. Never could Faeshu lie good enough - and it could probably
be a fatal flaw for a thief. And it would cost him his place in the guild,
though not today, but later certainly.
Thus he decided to abandon his ambitions for a time, and seek place wherever
he feels the likes of himself are - The Fortress of Light. He has seen much,
and grown quite enough that he deemed himself able to not be a burden, to
share his experiences and be able to actually help someone, including his
kin at Blackclaw.
After all, he did ask his friends in Fortress for advice on what to do with
guild matters, and was told not once to just 'follow his heart'. That was
easy, for he knew with whom his heart was...
Now here, studying the holy texts, removing the old dust and taking some
notes for himself, he was content, first time for Gods know how long.
Hardships of the Light
Added Tue Feb 15 04:37:02 2011 at level 46:
There was a lot of fighting lately. Though not a squire by calling, Faeshu
often had to confront heroes of the Empire who seeked the blood of his
brethren. He had seen corrupt Tribunals and misguided Outlanders, who would
strike at him and others of the Fortress. At present, it seemed there was
no justice in Thera, which made him take up arms so often.
However, he found himself rather unfit for direct combat, despite natural
agility and hard training, and trying to ruin an enemy's day while staying
in shadows proved not much of use either... for he could not hide from many.
So Faeshu had to resort to the tactic every thief has learned from an early
age - bringing a friend and relying on his trusty backstabbing skills. Yes,
some people might accuse him of dishonor and cowardice, but Faeshu would say
this is a flawed view. To him, true honor and valor lied in doing his best
to aid his companions and not abandoning them in a hard fight.
He could live with being not self-reliant, and still retain his pride.
Rewards of the Light
Added Fri Feb 18 04:33:23 2011 at level 47:
He could never have gotten the money he needed to seize the Spymaster
position by himself... well, now his efforts were paying off because he had
friends to ask for help. Sometimes, he would feel guilt over this, but
always could rationalize that while he might use his charm to get what he
wanted, he gave away no less, and thus still remained true to the Light.
It was time to strengthen Blackclaw. Faeshu wanted to keep his town in
order, so he would try not to involve any of it in cabal politics. He set
out to prepare some encouragement for young thieves to join his guild.
That is to say, in case some would appear around. He was sad seeing no felar
following his way, yet having gone so far, losing hope would be a crime
against himself. If nothing better, he would work alone to keep the
wickedness away from Blackclaw. He did not yet know how, but he would...
Action superior to words?
Added Mon Feb 21 05:30:28 2011 at level 47:
Faeshu noted his guild growing one person more - a young thief with a hate
of magic, and not only that but also of duergar heritage...
Right, young thieves take for granted joining any guild they want...
He remembered the plot to overthrow Flaaayin the Godfather of Voralia,
who also happened to be one of Battle leaders. It was nearing success by
the thieves of Fortress. But where would Flaaayin go, to try to seize some
power again? Surely to the weakest link among thieves' guilds - Blackclaw.
Apparently telling everyone that he does not mix his guild and cabal
matters was a big mistake, for the circumstances now were cornering him
into breaking his own word. Yes, it'd be too dangerous to keep a village
applicant around now, especially a dark one.
More subtle, peaceful methods were preferred and encouraged by the thief
code. This time, however, fast-talk would not get him out of trouble.
'So be strong', Faeshu said to himself. 'You are the leader of the pack now.
Convince yourself you don't need to tell any reason for blackball, or find
one, but remember that you only have time while your term lasts.'
Back to the Past
Added Fri Feb 25 02:59:29 2011 at level 51:
The crimson-stained whip flashed through the air with a swoosh, followed
by a painful clap and a sudden shortage in his ability to breathe. For half
a minute Faeshu was still struggling, but then the world blackened out. He
collapsed to the ground... before suddenly feeling the grip on his throat
weaken. Lightning fast he jumped back on his hindpaws, gasping for air, but
instead of his hated enemy, only the empty walls of his own room were about.
'Oh. But a dream.'
'How odd, Faeshu. You didn't have nightmares before, did you? You aren't
troubled by your past... because... well, because it's in the past now.'
He nodded slightly to himself, agreeing with his own thought.
He remembered that fight exactly. Going back through the void of time, to
visit Ostalagiah once more, he could not hold himself passing by the slave
market. Got some slavers a nice new hole in the back before one of them
managed to lash him up at the throat. Only unlike his dream, Faeshu then
escaped and lived. So this dream of imaginary failure was odd, too.
He felt some sinister sign in it, yet it brought food for thought.
'You must visit your homeland once more. There is something to discover.
Do Ostalagiah slavers breed felar? No, they don't. You must find the place
you were born at, and it is not Ostalagiah.'
Investigation
Added Sun Mar 6 05:32:09 2011 at level 51:
'So ya lookin for yer relatives, lad? Dis rare to see someone ask such
questions here. And ya better lay low a bit, tha slavers still mad at ya
fer wreakin havoc in tha market!'
Coming to the Past once again, he now found the best source of information
one could have in any city - the thieves. The plan was to find first of his
former masters, and through this learn whether there were others of his kin.
'Tell me', he said, stroking a whisker as he was choosing words carefully,
'how much will it cost to find a certain slave merchant for me?'
Interrogation
Added Tue Mar 8 03:19:25 2011 at level 51:
A knife was held at the slave merchant's throat.
The hand, or rather a paw, holding it was firm enough that he was sure
this odd felar can and will kill him. Yet once hearing the question, he
could barely suppress a laugh:
'You ask me of some slaves I brought here long ago, and how long, you say,
forty damn years?! How am I supposed to remember that?'
The felar hissed at him, backing the man against the wall.
'Did not say long ago. Said forty years pass for me. Your time, slower.
Ages pass in Thera, the Past change very little.'
'You must be mad, felar. What Past you speak of?'
Faeshu sighed slowly. This was not going to work.
'Fine. Other then. Do you have records of who you buy and sell?'
'What? You can read? I mean... oh, yes, I do.'
What it brings
Added Wed Mar 9 06:51:07 2011 at level 51:
'Cute. Hundreds of slaves went through your possession... among them mostly
giants, some dwarves, some humans... twenty four felar. Many of the younger
slaves brought and sold to you by the same lone raider.'
Faeshu tore the page out of the book, making the slaver flinch at the sound.
'Apparently he used to steal children. Human children mostly, and once he
got a felar cub to bring you. Probably claimed that you would make great use
of him, to keep rats and vermin away. Or was it your own idea, eh?'
The part about rats of course wasn't written there, but having to hunt them
was hardly something he would once forget.
Eyeing the page quickly, he paused, then added:
'Judging by the name, Warkah Tawntail, he was one of my kind himself...'
Five minutes later, Faeshu left the building and disappeared into the night.
He could be proud of himself - got what he wanted to know, and nobody died.
The revelation
Added Wed Mar 9 14:19:34 2011 at level 51:
He would enlist the help of local thieves again, to find the mysterious
snatcher of children. However, the fate ruled it out another way, about two
weeks after he began his new search, as he was prowling the streets of the
city, he suddenly felt himself grabbed by the collar and dragged into some
back alley. He made a move to escape the grasp, only to meet two fiery eyes
staring at him at close distance.
'You!', the stranger snarled angrily, 'Explain why seek me, before I lose
temper and butcher you'.
Faeshu could not even take a good look at his captor. He cursed under his
breath, and decided it's better to be open.
'Calm down... calm down. Let's say, interested in someone you sold as a
slave to a certain merchant, six years ago. A felar.' He narrowed his eyes,
trying to look firm. 'It's a long story. Can you release me, eh?'
The stranger looked at him, slightly less angry.
'I can. Be sure, can pin again anytime. No make trouble'.
An hour later, they were sitting in some tavern, in a dark corner. Warkah,
as that was indeed him, looked bored and impatient with Faeshu's telling.
'So you be that. Six years ago. And you be mature now because of some...
void of time. Time travel! Hah!'
He spit on the floor before looking up again.
'Cheap story. Wouldn't believe... but you told your name, and it matches.'
'Eh? How'd you know a name of a child you steal? Did my mother and father,
like, tell you before you kill them?'
Warkah frowned, looking at him in disgust.
'Why you so stupid, Faeshu? Shouldn't be. Because I am your father, and I
ain't stupid.'
End of story
Added Mon Mar 28 18:31:44 2011 at level 51:
This obviously wasn't a story anyone would like to hear at the storytelling
evening. Even though it was true, it lacked any moral to derive from it...
except perhaps the saying that some knowledge is best left unfound. Faeshu
however still felt better knowing where and how he came to be.
'That Tawntail fellow, who sold his own son away because he didn't want the
burden, what has he done to his mate, my mother... He did not admit anything,
but my gut tells me he's lying. Nothing left to do, will just leave him be in
his world. He gave me nothing but my name, well, at least now I know his.
And I have better things to do than pick through my past. So here it ends.'
