Description

Tall and broad shouldered this man is draped in a long onyx covered robe. The robe is covered in an interesting pattern of dark red runes that all seem to represent different elements and para-elements. What can be seen of his skin is a dark earthy copper color and it is interwoven with a strange web that almost looks like arteries of red hot magma and veins of ice water. The shadows of his hood reveal the hint of a strong chin, hawkish nose, pursed lips, and two deep set blue eyes. You can swear little arcs of lightning are jumping between those piercing eyes. At his waist is a thick leather girdle covered in pouches of various reagents both mundane and exotic. It adds to his intoxicating aroma which is a mix of freshly plowed earth, burnt papyrus, cinnamon, ozone, and a hint of blood. One meaty hand clasps a well worn bag of bones that he holds close as if it was a child to be protected. He moves with an almost regal sense of purpose, and it appears as if the shadows follow him unnaturally.

Role

The Wayfaring Stranger

Added Wed Feb 15 23:50:25 2012 at level 17:
When you stare into the Abyss, the Abyss stares back into you...

This perhaps encapsulates Falkaine's life in a nut shell. Born with a love of
knowledge, but more importantly revelation. It was not just the knowing that
he sought hungrily but that moment of pure discovery that was like a drug. He
could then use such knowledge to try to divine the greater purpose that we
all seek. Some sought knowledge only from dusty old books, and while useful
was nothing compared to the secrets held by the world itself. Falkaine felt
that the building blocks of the world were the best path to unlock it's
secrets. The very elements themselves were the keepers of the mysteries, who
remembered longer what had transpired then the earth, fire could burn and
melt things down to their core being, the wind whispered secrets from far and
wide, so on and so forth. So he acted as kind of a soothsayer and mystic in
his little village of Arkus. He married his sweetheart Heather at a young
age, and had many wonderful children he adored. Though his true love was
always in the discovery and so he constantly sought new ways to divine the
mysteries.

One night a cloaked stranger entered Falkaine's shop seeking a
reading from him. The strangest man he had ever seen, he thought he might be
one of those dark elves he had heard tale of and his presence seemed to darken
the room. The stranger mocked his attempts at a reading as to Falkaine it
seemed as this man's life had no beginning and no end, and instead offered to
read Falkaine's future. He claimed that more could be gleamed from a man's
shadow than anything else and proceeded to read Falkaine's. He told him to
follow the elemental signs to the shade of the tree with leaves of glass and
then when the eye in the darkness saw him the dark secrets of the world would
be revealed to him. Then the lantern blew out, and when it was re lit the man
was gone, and the shadows receded. Thus began Falkaine's obsession and some
decent folk would later claim his downfall.

Seasons in the Abyss

Added Sat Feb 18 17:58:31 2012 at level 18:
Falkaine searched day and night, seeking the signs the elements would reveal
to him. So obsessed that this normally peaceful and good natured man became
increasingly dark and moody at his lack of progress. Finally he realized
where he must go, the dark wood at the end of the great river. A place of
dark tidings to be sure, but his desire to divine his future was too great.
When he saw the tree he had a sinking feeling in his heart and then that rush
of discovery that made him ignore his intuition. Jagged rifts split the
twisted and gnarled midnight black mixture of worked stone, wooden beams and
rich earth that formed the trunk of this unusual tree. Thousands of shards of
glass lie embedded within the enormous network of branches that move in a
hypnotic, fluid motion, independent of whatever breeze stirs the surrounding
air. From within the depths of the rifts a dark orange glow wells forth,
spilling over the surrounding ground like misty blood. Below the strange tree
was a fissure of shadow into a cave of some sort, and it beckoned to his
curiosity. He was torn as he felt great foreboding from the sight of the cave
but at the same time a sense of great power and promise. He decided to let
the fates decide and rolled his bone dice. It spun on the ground bouncing
right at the edge of the fissure, and when he went to go look at what his
path would be a great shadowy claw reached out and pulled him into the cave.
All went dark, and all he could remember was a great shadowy eye burned into
his mind.

Shadow Out of Madness

Added Sat Feb 18 18:07:40 2012 at level 18:
He awoke suddenly to a horror worse than any nightmare he could
possibly imagine. He was back in Arkus, covered in blood and wounded, before
him was the dismembered remains of his village fastened together in a macabre
sculpture of some sort. He scurried back in horror at first running from the
village, but then suddenly remembering his beloved Heather and his dear sweet
children. As he turned back from a distance he could see now that the corpse
parts were strapped together to resemble a massive version of the glass tree
he had seen, limbs and fingers and toes making the branches and leaves. In
the middle was a great eye made of their heads. He was drawn to the eye, a
flash of golden curly hair near the middle that was so familiar. He ran as a
man possessed to what remained of his beloved Heather and strewn about her in
the shape of an iris the bits and pieces of his children. Her body had been
gnawed at by some beast, and the rest of her was burnt in some places and
frozen in others. Over all the parts was written a strange script in their
blood, and even though he did not think he had seen it before he could read
it. The words Shadow, Scion, and many strange words to the human tongue, but
he knew what they meant, Nightwalker. Too stunned for words he stared in
morbid disbelief, what horror had done this thing. Did he release a devil
from the inferno or worse that would slay and devour his whole family, his
whole village? Why was he spared?

He let out a scream of rage, and suddenly the ground begin to shake.
Was that the terror who did this returning? As he stopped screaming the
ground immediately stopped shaking as well. He glanced down to notice his
hand on fire, yet it did not burn him. He shook it in panic and as he did it
changed from being covered in fire to frost and then to some kind of strange
ooze before changing back to just his hand. He stumbled away in shock,
feeling so queasy and he could feel his stomach fuller then he ever
remembered. Upon a hill overlooking the nightmare bellow he wretched and
sobbed, cursing the fates and needing to know what did it all mean. He
casually noticed his once clean shaven face had grown a beard down to his
waist, how long had he been gone he wondered? After what felt like hours he
finished retching, and looked down to see something shining in his sick. It
was a ring on a woman's finger, but not just any ring, it was his wife's
wedding ring.

And that is when Falkaine and his sanity forever parted ways. It was like a
light was snuffed out in his soul, he casually stood up a new man, wiping the
bits of his family from his beard and glanced at the shadow the macabre tree
made cross the landscape. In all his years of foretelling things to come he
had never been so sure of anything as what that shadow meant. It screamed at
him of what was to come. The world must end in shadow, and it would be
Falkaine who cast it.

Thirteen

Added Sun Mar 18 02:09:29 2012 at level 43:
While it had been many years since his new life had begun, in ways it felt
like just yesterday. He had not been idle though. He no longer just listened to the
elements for his divinations he began to wield them as weapons of his will.
The elements and shadow attuned to his family's bones had led him inexorably
towards his destiny with the Night. It led him to a rift in the desert and he
came upon a deranged arial who looked like an owl but who reeked of death and
radiated power. Something had maimed the creatures mind, but he was still as
dangerous as any Falkaine had ever met. He offered Falkaine a place amongst a
coven of great power, if he would but pick a number that pleased death's owl.
Falkaine need only look into the creatures shadow to know Thirteen is what he
sought as an answer to his riddle. With his last act the Advisor showed
Falkaine the secret of the Ccrul'gra and their Scepter and promptly ended his
twisted life. And so Falkaine become one of the Scion, bringers of the
Eternal night as it was foretold, but it was only one more step into his path
into the Abyss. As Falkaine left the advisor's body he swore he could hear
the chatter of gnomes coming from the chamber but when he returned to look
the body and the voices were gone.

At the Maethien of Madness

Added Sun Mar 18 02:24:08 2012 at level 43:
Secrets and power were all that Falkaine cared about now when he wasn't
obsessing over his divinations, and there was no better place for such then
the Chasm. While disappointed in their lack of knowledge or unwillingness to
share about what he'd come to know as the Khar-Zhur trees that seemed to be
found throughout the land, he was delighted in other secrets they had shown
him. He also made sure to discover secrets about his fellow Scions as to know
ones secrets was to have a power over them. He and several of the other
Scions had been approached by a strange and powerful necromancer known as
Davarrah the Ravenous with an artifact known as the Tempering Sphere. She
promised them trips to the very Shadow Plane itself! Oh what dark wonders he
might discover, especially what had truly happened to him when he entered
that portal a lifetime ago.

In the meantime he continued to search for his own ways into the Shadow Plane
with his brethren. The new Chancellor Narissorin had led them into the ruins
of Maethien where a group of wild Ccrul'gra had found a way into this plane.
Though they had refused to align themselves with the Scion and the group had
to fight their way into their midst to learn of their secrets. After
defeating their massive leader in the heart of this once conduit to the
Shadow Plane, Falkaine began a powerful divination. Calling upon the
elements, the power of the Scepter, and the bones of his beloved he called
out to the infinite and to the Shadow, he was not expecting something to
responded so strongly. Something ancient and powerful reached out to him, it
was something familiar yet horrifying and just a glimpse of what it showed
Falkaine nearly shattered his mind. He awoke from his palaver to find he had
transcended from his mortal flesh into a creature merged with the very
elements of creation themselves. What was he becoming? What did his strange
visions mean, all he could remember was The Eye.

He knew the time had come, he must seek of Reksah the secret of the
void. He would offer himself as a vessel to the demi-god and hope that he had
secrets enough to bargain with to reveal what all these mysteries meant. May
the Gods of Light have mercy on his soul, for surely Reksah will not.
