Description

Dressed in fine silks of dark coloring, this arial seems to be rather well-off. His garments are clean, a rarity in today's adventuring world, and his beak and talons are well-cared-for. His plumage is dark - some might think it black, but it is in fact a dark green. Red the color of dried blood marks the end of his wingtips. His facial features seem harsh, but that may be simply a side-effect of his dark, unfeeling eyes and the normal severity of an arial expression. When you look closer, you notice that...

Role

Greed

Added Sat Nov 13 00:51:39 2010 at level 17:
"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works.
Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary
spirit. Green, in all its forms - money, life, love, power, knowledge - has
marked the upward surge of Therankind."

A quote from a wise man from long ago, yet still accurate in this fifth
age. Many would say that War shapes us - innovations come from a need to
defend our people from an enemy, or to conquer. I submit that War, however,
is itself driven by another factor - Greed. Greed is the one trait that
every Theran in existance possesses, yet few would acknowledge this.

Deep in the hearts of all Therans, however, they know. When that shiny
bauble that they have assumed they would never have an opportunity to
possess finally lands in their grubby little paws...that is when they
know. They must have it. They must keep it. And anyone who might take it
is a Bad Person (tm).

Other thieves call themselves many things - businessmen, rogues,
pirates, scallywags...but not me. I freely admit my greed, and revel
in it. Moreover, I intend to show others their inner greed. Whether by
theft, removal from a carcass...whatever means are available - I will
take from my enemies that which they think they cannot bear to lose.

If they are able to admit their Greed, it is likely I will simply
return the item - lesson learned, as they say. If not? Well, if not
then we shall see, won't we?

All of this can be accomplished without affiliation. The Empire,
does present intriguing possibilities for one such as myself, however.

In that, too, we shall see.

Bandit King, Bloodoath, Shadow Dweller, Imperial Shadow

Added Mon Nov 22 22:29:33 2010 at level 29:
I have held many titles recently. I am currently known as a Crime Lord,
a Bandit King, and an Imperial Shadow. Such grandiose labels for such
mundane tools. Tools is all these things are. Tools to acquire more wealth,
more power, more...things. To continue to try to sate the insatiable. It all
comes down to Greed. I have more Greed than the other members of the Hamsah
den of thieves, and so I easily claim the title of Bandit King and all of the
associated power that goes with it.

As an aside, the High Priest - he who is the true power of the Empire - spoke
to me today, telling me of how he is impressed with the Bandit King title and
will see me Elite as soon as is possible. Such wonderful things that come with titles.

My plans are hardly original. Become Shadow Lord, maneuver my way to the Throne...
Nobody ever said Greed was original. But, for your entertainment, I will
try to do it with style.

How have we reached this place?

Added Thu Nov 25 22:07:33 2010 at level 35:
Ten years prior to Faolai entering the Academy...
The vizier to the Arial Emperor rubbed his hands in that evil mastermind
method as he contemplated the scene in the courtyard below. His plans were
well underway, now, and proceeding nicely. Arial children of various ages
were kept here, in secret, wings and talons and beaks bound. They would be
no trouble as they awaited the procedure.

Procedure indeed. Experiment? Spell? Mystical undertaking? There were so many
things it could be called. The details were...beneath...the Vizier at any rate.
It involved magi of all sorts, funneling their magics through the Sky Demon and
Sky Devil somehow. These beasts in turn funneled the twisted magic into 9 dark
arial guards. "Into" was really not the right word - "through" fit better, in
truth. The magic then truly did enter into the child.

The end result was a being whose soul had been corrupted irrevocably. The child
became a blank slate, save for an overwhelmingly wicked moral outlook. Greed,
covetousness, envy, anger, hate - whichever might have been a minor flaw in the
arial before the process was amplified beyond measure.

And then the indoctrination began.

The Vizier was swatting away an idle thought ("Why exactly nine dark arial guards?")
as one of his henchmen approached. "The latest one is ready, m'Lord."

"Good, good. Name this one...Kyrilos, I think. Yes. Let us grant him grandiose
memories. Perhaps let him think he is borne of the Highest Blood - in line for the
throne of Arial Emperor himself. But do not, of course, forget to embed Order 11."

The most important part, that. Order 11, when issued in the right way, would flood
the pawn with an overwhelming desire to obey the Vizier. It could only be used once,
and once used, the subject would lose its own drive for power - not truly mindless,
but certainly not as useful. Many of these hapless children would meet grisly, untimely
deaths in their quests for power. But none of the trails would lead back to him. He
would execute Order 11 only when one of his unwitting dupes had seized some amount
of power. The Imperial Throne, perhaps. Or Provost Magistrate of the Tribunal.
Commander of the Village, even.

"Everyone eventually turns against a tyrant." thought the Vizier as he proceeded
back to the Throne Room to "advise" the Arial Emperor. "But he who pulls the strings
on a tyrannical puppet need only find a new puppet once the strings are broken."

As he walked from the balcony, his diabolical laughter nearly drowned out the
screaming of the next victim. The one we now know as Faolai.

Spies

Added Fri Dec 10 08:28:14 2010 at level 51:
"My liege, Kyrilos has taken his last breath. Faolai is the new Shadow Lord."

The Vizier peered at his lackey, clicking his talons idly on his dais while he thought.
This might bode very well. Kyrilos had been old, and relatively frail. Faolai was
young. Robust, yet. His designs for the Imperial Throne had a decent chance of success.

"What are Faolai's plans now, then, mmm?" queried the Vizier.

The other avian's feathers ruffled slightly. Irritating. The Vizier had come to
identify that particular habit as an unconscious identifier of nervousness. This twit's
news would not be something he thought the Vizier wanted to hear.

"Er, my liege, we have been unable to reliably keep anyone near him. All of our spies
seem to vanish shortly after reporting they have begun to observe him."

So. It seemed Faolai was no fool. He could not possibly know where the spies he was
disposing of came from - the spies themselves did not - yet his minions made sure
to always choose the best, the most discreet. And more than one had failed, mmm?

"Very well. Pull back any other spies that have been dispatched to watch Faolai.
Have the ones who observe the others - Khazvorn, Hrothchuk, Chertghra, and so on -
report more frequently, and inform them to listen for information on our new Shadow
Lord. We will learn of him in bits and pieces, it seems."

The flunky did not withdraw, however. He hesitated. Mmm. Even "worse" news, then?

"One...final...bit of...n-news, my liege. It seems that Faolai seeks the mark
of Lord...er...he has approached the Divine...that is, he has been said to have
been within the shrine of the King-"

"Enlilth!" the Vizier spat. This must not, of course happen. The mark of the majestic
scepter might well begin to unravel Faolai's conditioning. Make him difficult or even
impossible to control. Worse, it might eventually grant him a sense of the fact that he
HAD been controlled. No, this must not stand.

"This is what you must do..." As the Vizier gave the pawn his instructions, he was
already thinking of what he would do with the rest of the chess board. Nothing would
ruin this for him.

The Final Embrace

Added Tue Dec 28 19:59:48 2010 at level 51:
The Vizier glanced up in irritation as his candle flame flickered. He had
given strict orders that he was not to be disturbed as he perused his lists
of his creations.
The door to his chamber was still shut, however, and so he returned to his
lists. His mind wandered as he examined them.

Hzerliach, Kezawk, Sackhi, Taffer...not much hope of any power there. They
might be used to somehow control the affairs of the Fortress, though. What to
do about the renegade? No, no. Don't think of that failure.

Aartur, Rmmorgirguan - best to skip thinking of them. They touched too close
to *him*. No. Calming thoughts.

A smirk worked its way into his beak as he continued down the list. Jehsonay
might yet come to power in the Tree, and with Eck, Falobrek, Flaaayin, Qokoiu,
and Verren, a very good chance at some form of leadership of the Village was in
place. Perhaps one of them might succeed with the upstart where his own personal
assassins had not.

The candlelight flickered again, irritating the Vizier further as he thought of
his failure with Faolai. Each successive attempt seemed to be more rapidly and
brutally dealt with by the Shadow Lord. The last henchman had been punctured so
thoroughly that one might have thought he had fallen upon a porcupine.

The Vizier returned to his list. The next name, Kharten, made him smile deeply.
This one had great potential. As Advisor - or even Chancellor! of the Chasm, he
would wield great power indeed. More than the others on the lists. Order 11 would
issued, and the plan might yet be salvaged.

The rest of the list seemed rather dull in comparison. Darlin, Koniki, Dastin,
his mind began to wander as he continued. What to do about the Bandit King? That
accursed Enlilth and his damnedable tattoo had ruined everything there!

Chindechok, Klekso, Vinishi, but could something be salvaged? Perhaps not with
his death, but some well-placed misinformation?

Skrythic, Ebele, Zwick...his talon traced down to the end of his list, and he was
suddenly mindful of something.

There should be no breeze, nothing at all to stir his candle.

The last thing the Vizier ever saw was a large stream of his own blood extinguishing
the candle light.

"Now this is an interesting list," mused the Shadow Lord.

Imperial Personas

Added Wed Feb 2 20:11:51 2011 at level 51:
So. We have the Empress, Gvantulak. How did one so unwise in the ways of Thera
ascend to such lofty heights, and manage to deflect attempts to unseat her?
Perhaps the first quality answers the second question - those of us who serve
prefer to serve one who is, in fact, less worldly than ourselves. The prospect
of serving Jharazoul was somewhat chilling, in comparison.

Speaking of High Priests...Liosthen, where is your God now? Hah. More accurately,
where are YOU? The greatest threat you pose to my chances of eventual ascension to
the Throne is a lack of any presence, thereby rendering any Vote moot.

The War Master. A good ally to have. He knows precisely how adept I am, and
neither of us is truly bothered by the thought of serving the other. Slightly
less ... naive? than the Empress, he still looks to me for guidance in many areas.

The Dread Lord. Another ally, though not as strong as the War Master. Pandol
is the wild card. If I can manage to convince him to Vote for me when the time
comes, I am fairly much assured the position. Hmm.

Finally, Sivyh. Sivyh will make a very good Shadow Lord, once I am Emperor.
Pandol would be succeeded by Hildara, another adept Elite. But the War Master
has no such quality waiting in the wings to replace him. As for the High Priest?

Hah. The Divine Sect is a shambles.

Well, we shall see. The Empress' light seems to be fading a bit. That
recent botched raid on the Tree, when neither she, nor the War Master,
nor the Dread Lord, nor even my own Elite, Sivyh seemed to do anything
right...that took its toll on her. She started giving me advice on how
to handle things when I become the next Emperor.

We shall see, I suppose. Observe from the shadows, and seize the opportunity
when it presents itself.
