Role
The A'krei Tribe of the Waters of Arailen
Added Wed Oct 19 21:29:21 2011 at level 16:
The Tribe of the A'krei descend from the arial race of the first age who
populated the mountains surrounding the Waters of Arailen. What is now known
as the Araile Desert was once a large lake that supported rich life both in
and around it. If the various Arial races can be compared to Raptors, then
the A'Krei were as the Osprey are, grey and white, and dependent on the
Waters for the fish they provided.
Fiercely territorial, Faulkren's people have held their ground in the
mountains east of the Araile Desert over the generations, honoring their vow
to someday return the Waters and their way of life. It is known that magic
was behind the transformation of the water to the odd reddish crystal sands,
and the A'krei believe it can be undone. To the A'krei, to die for this, in
battle, is honorable. There is never worry that perhaps their homeland is
forever, irrevocably altered. There is no doubt that given time, and blood,
unwavering dedication and a fierce, determined nature, victory will be
theirs, the spell will be broken, and the Waters will return.
To honor this vow and show their devotion, when Faulkren or any of the A'krei
defeat a foe in combat and the victory is sound and pure, they fly to a
particular part of the desert where the sands are most red and bathe,
rustling around in the sand as though they were bathing in the waters of
their ancestral home. As a result, their grey feathers become dyed red over
time, a visible reminder to all who view them that here walks a blooded
warrior.
The Demise of the A'krei
Added Sat Oct 22 18:09:27 2011 at level 25:
As the years passed, the A'krei tribe began to dwindle. The shells of their
eggs were brittle, fragile in the arid heat. The A'krei were a breed of water
birds, and their progeny were reliant on the humidity and temperate climate
of the Waters Arailen of yore. Fewer and fewer chicks were successfully
hatched from every clutch, and fewer and fewer Warriors of the A'krei were
trained.
With dwindling numbers, Faulkren's tribe became vulnerable to attack. The
Scions had always been the proverbial devil on the doorstep, but the
seclusion of the High Peaks of the Tahril combined with the fierce strength
of the A'krei warriors kept the relatively few Minions of the Eternal Night
at bay. Until recently.
Under the Lich Lord Tavlin, the nightwalkers multiplied and swarmed out into
the Araile, their influence spreading to the places once beneath their
notice. One moonless evening, the Eternal Night gathered and struck in force
the Village of the Akrei, crashing into it like a giant wave of despair.
Tacticians and true Warriors, the Akrei had prepared for such an event. The
alarm was passed from Arial to Arial, their high-pitched screams raptor-esque
and fierce, multiplying in the night until the air seemed to quiver with the
battle cry. A small defensive force broke away to hold back the onslaught,
while two other groups gathered the only two eggs that had survived from the
years clutch. The entire generation of Akrei, once numerous as the pines on
the shores of the Waters Arailen. The first group, with Faulkren cradling the
egg in his claws as gently as possible, took off into the night and headed
west. Their goal was Loch Terradian. The second group was never able to take
flight.
The Nightwalkers quickly overcame the token defense, but they were not
stalled for long enough, barreling into the second group of egg-bearers and
swallowing them in sheer numbers.

Faulkren glanced over his shoulder, already a hundred feet off the ground,
and screamed in frustration as he saw the village overtaken. then suddenly
he screamed again, this time in pain! Similar cries echoed from the warriors
flying in formation around him and the lightning began to strike. The scent
of burned feathers and flesh filled the night air, even as the winds buffeted
Faulkren with the fury of a magical storm. Battered and disoriented, he
steeled his will and flew on, blind, to what he hoped was the west. The storm
seemed to follow, inexorably, no matter how fast he flew. Alone now,
Faulkrens own injury, a burning pain across his shoulders, grew to be too
much and he realized he would fall soon. Gliding clumsily towards what looked
like a clearing in the storm, Faulkren crashed into wet grass and rolled,
cradling the egg close to his body as he came to a stop, battered and
bruised. Lightning continued to strike, illuminating what appeared to be a
large clearing in the trees. A large, flat rock sat in the center of the
clearing, just feet from where Faulkren had come to rest. Seeing a refuge
from the lightnings, he dashed through the rain to the rock, tucking the egg
into a crevice in the stone as hail began to fall around him. Thinking
quickly, the battered Arial gathered up a handful of rocks scattered nearby
and stacked them around the egg, protecting it from the unnatural ice falling
from the sky.
Suddenly, inexplicably, the rain and hail stopped, and the lightning ceased.
The air grew still and eerily quietand then a searing, blue-white beam of
light dazzled into being, breaking through the clouds and striking the flat
rock and Faulkren on it. He hung, suspended, wings outstretched as the beam
lifted him from the rock, his every muscle strained and tense for what seemed
like an eternity. A great heat filled his body, so intense he doubted he
would survive, but when the light suddenly went out the uncomfortable feeling
of burning fled and the cool night breeze felt refreshing on his skin.
The egg! Faulkren exclaimed quietly to himself as he whirled, swooping down
to where he had tucked what was now, more than likely, the last of a new
generation of Akrei.
Pulling away the oddly shaped stones from the egg buried beneath, Faulkren
let out a long sigh through his nairs, the feathers around his beak
quivering. The egg was there. But it had split, a long crack zigzagging
across the top. Not from any hailstone or impact, no, the egghad cooked from
the inside, hard-boiled by the beam of moonlight.
Faulkren threw back his head and screamed into the night, a piercing, forlorn
call that seemed to mock him as it echoed back and forth across the clearing.
Summary of Religious Beliefs and Way of Life
Added Wed Nov 2 19:54:21 2011 at level 42:
Faulkren feels a lot of guilt about not being strong enough to protect the
last egg of the A'krei. It drives him to be a stronger warrior, to work hard
and incessantly, to win.
The warlike traditions of his people were such that fighting was a part of
daily life, sparring was common and disputes were settled by blood. This is
near the core of why Faulkren worships Lord Akresius. Combat is something
comfortable and familiar to him, a piece of his home and heritage, both lost
now.
Going further, the struggle for survival is very important. A fight to the
death, yours or your enemy's, requires complete attention and concentration.
It is in this moment that all of your training, your hard work, your
reflexes, are tested. It is also a beautiful moment, it enraptures those who
share it, mingling blood, and blinds them to everything else. Distractions,
fears, worries, desires, memories. Feelings of guilt that remain with him
with every waking moment.
Faulkren often stops by the Arena near Galadon to heckle those who go to
watch the fights, and the fighters themselves. The former for being too lazy
and fat to bother fighting themselves, and the latter for whoring themselves
out for the entertainment of such creatures. Fighters in the arena to do the
art of combat what prostitutes in Hamsah do to the art of lovemaking.
Reflections on his Brothers in the Village
Added Mon Nov 21 18:21:09 2011 at level 51:
A few of Faulkren's relationships in the Village at a glance.
Commander Akedeh: As the only other arial in the Village, Faulkren regards
Akedeh as an elder figure, someone to be respected, both the man and his
orders. As such, Faulkren doesn't question the new war with the Spire,
Refuge, and Fortress. It isn't so much of a distraction, largely because half
of the and it provides blood so much that the Chalice overflows. Thanks to
Akedeh, Faulkren has lived the past few months as happily as he had been
since the great tragedy in the Virgin Forest when he lost the last egg. His
days are full of combat, and although he has shed a great deal of his own
blood, he's quite certain as time passes it is his enemies who fill the
Chalice.
Mauz: Mauz is always present, always giving information about where to find
magi. Reliable, stoic, wise, Faulkren thinks he will do great things for the
Village in the future.
Boggom: Loud, obnoxious, unpleasant. Faulkren has only just met him, but
already witnessed him berating a warrior, new to the huts and wide eyed, far
beyond what was called for. Yes, the young Villager should know the paths to
our enemies cabal, no, he did not need to made to feel like a worthless idiot
to understand that importance. Boggom seems to always have the answer for
everything, and he's always sure he's right. He also sometimes speaks using
odd phrases and words unknown in the common tongue of Thera.
Karzii: A frequent companion of Faulkren, Karzii is always up to raid, strong
and reliable. A sense of humor and sense of humility go a long way, and
Karzii has both in spades. Knowledgeable, reliable, and dedicated.
Taerg: Although Taerg bears the mark of Faulkren's Lord of the Sanguine
Chalice, Faulkren finds himself disinclined to approach the duergar. They've
never really had a conversation, and outside of raiding parties don't often
fight at eachothers' sides. Taerg was around a long time before Faulkren
joined the Village, and there's a sense of respect and an inkling of awe that
likely make it more difficult for Faulkren to see himself as Taerg's equal,
and banter with him as he can with Karzii.
Tontik: A lot like Taerg. A rock, solid presence in the Village, but seldom
awake when Faulkren is on the lines of battle. It was Tontik who gave
Faulkren his hut, but since being passed over for Commander he seems to be a
lot less vocal in general. No doubt it's because he wants to respect Akedeh's
position, and Faulkren can respect that as well.
