Description

Beautiful. Almost ethereal. Lithe, but not skinny. Almost exactly six feet tall, she does not move her eyes away from your gaze, but rather returns it without shame or fear. Pale green eyes they are, and they are unwavering, though they flick from time to time to the sides, obviously surveying the surroundings. Framed by lengthy chestnut hair, the cheek bones are high in the common elfin form. The hair, sometimes held by circlet, sometimes by thong or other tie, is straight, without a hint of curl or wave. Beneath the shoulders are limbs toned from activity, and a good guess would be from martial training, as a pair of swords and a few other weapons are visible. Otherwise the clothing appears well made, much made of whole cloth but some of differing metals. In fact it's a bit of a mish-mash of armor and clothing but somehow she makes it work. Looking at her head to toe you are sure that

Role

History and Arrogance

Added Thu Mar 2 19:05:59 2017 at level 3:
Elves are an ancient people, smart and wise, but in some ways they are as prosaic
as any of the other, younger species. One of those is how they treat women. Growing
up a princess of Darsylon was all well and good until she grew old enough that
the freedom to behave as she wished was ended so fast as to almost be like chopping off
a limb. Seemed she went to bed one night able to run the forests, fight the guards,
play with humans and sirines and others in the city, only to wake up in a dress, slippers,
and the only thing with an edge she was allowed to carry being a butter knife for meals.
Men get to lead. Men get to fight. Men get to be, well, men. The injustice and unfairness
of this situation chafed for decades, and in the end was among the reasons for her
departure. But before that, during those years, she had time. Time she could not spend
doing as she wished. Instead, she studied. Studied and studied. Learned all she could.
And one of the areas the libraries of the palace excel at is history. As the eldest of all
the races, their histories go back furthest, and are the most complete. She read them
all. And as her reading and learning progressed she began to perceive a pattern, and
eventually came to a realization. History is doomed to repeat itself if those who live it
do not pay attention to history and learn its lessons. Yet this is precisely what's happened,
when it comes to magic.

The very first of all stories, the very beginning of all history, is made clear to all
who come to thera. The peril of magic and betrayal. And from there the many millenia
confirm, over and over, the devastating - literally to devastate - effects of magic, and
its use by mortals. Death. Destruction to whole swaths of land in Thera. Even gods have
fallen, almost all one way or the other tied to the use of magic. She reads and reads
and nothing else even come close to the spectacular scale and power of magic to kill and destroy.
No other threat, not disease, not famine, not urbanization, nothing, comes close to the
danger posed by magic. And that's where the arrogance comes in. Mortals never learn.
Her integrity compels her to acknowledge that her own people are perhaps the worst of
all in this regard. So self assured of their intellectual superiority, they do not see
how myopic they can be when it comes to their own fallibility. Too smart are we, think her
people, to be unable to use magic wisely. Indeed, they continue, magic is is not like wildfire,
ready to destroy all, but rather like air, a gift to be inhaled deeply. But history is
the only truly infallible thing, and it shows plainly that magic is the greatest danger.
Eventually she came to her father, the king, and in meticulous detail presented her findings.
It was a long and thoughtful presentation. Only her status as princess kept everyone around
her, father included, from laughing in her face. She convinced none of them. Not one.

Committment and Plan

Added Thu Mar 2 19:26:13 2017 at level 3:
It was a short time after that when she decided she must leave and make use of her life
to better ends than frippery, frocks, dances and dinners. Her youthful training with the
captain of the palace guards was among her happiest times, and left her with talents
unusable in her own home, and so leaving to find a place she could use and improve those
skills, in the service of fighting against the great danger, seemed obvious. When the
day came, it turned out to be far less difficult than she thought. She felt almost nothing
keeping her in Darsylon, and after packing a few things she thought might be useful, she
made her way out to the wider world, finding herself most comfortable in Voralian City,
surrounded by those who at least cherished the goodness in life, even if they did not
recognize the true darkness that is the mystical. A hall of warriors with several
guildmasters welcomed her in, and she began her training in the guild, choosing to
continue primarily with the sword, but learning the basics of all the weapons used to kill.

On a more personal level, her rebellion was not limited to her desire to be an
active participant in life despite her gender. Her people's famous seriousness, stern
visages and prim and proper ways always seemed contrived and useless and in fact
harmful, prevented full enjoyment of life. Her dedication and committment to defeating
magic is serious as can be, but it does not mean her existence and all life must be
equally so. To the contrary, why seek to protect the world from the great danger if there
is no enjoyment and happiness to be had in that world? She will drink like a dwarf,
eat like a giant, laugh like a child, and smile like the newlywed. Perhaps it's the
deep intellect of her kind, but she can exist with two separate mindsets, the deadly
oneness needed for killing, and the joyful freedom that is the reward for doing what you
know is right.

Of course, she is who she is, and there will, from time to time, be a teensy bit of tone
to her voice, almost always in response to someone else acting arrogant to her. She will
not take any steps to advertise her royalty, but she will not deny it, either, and
being mortal she may lose her self control every now and then and let that haughtiness
leak out. But she genuinely does not feel that way most of the time, and does not want
to act that way, either.

Chance? Or something more?

Added Thu Mar 16 00:37:02 2017 at level 27:
Odd things are to be expected from time to time. That is the nature of life.
Fethelera has no doubt her spirit lies with Whisydan, but if there were to
to be a doubt, to be a weakest part of her faith, it was always a distinct lack of
exceptional appearances of the number 13 in her life. Indeed, once she came to realize
her passion would lead her to Whiysdan, she began looking for such seeming coincidences.
She almost tried to will it to happen. To no avail of course. But as with many
things, once you stop trying so hard, it happens. And so it was. Coincidence? Chance?
Who will know. But the thirteenth meeting with Oxias, the village commander, was the one
where she was inducted and built her hut. And how did she earn that hut? She slew
a mage. It was a quick fight. But it was their SECOND fight in mere hours, and together
there were thirteen blows in those fights, bringing the mage down in the end. And finally,
perhaps most important, it was after her thirteenth visit to the shrine that
she first received word from the lord. Of course, all this means is that there are
likely thirteen more "coincidences" to come, but she knows to simply continue enjoying
her life, fulfiling her goals, and letting them occur.

In honor of this though, and in gratitude for his writing, she spent quite a long time
devising and putting together a gift she thinks suitable. They share a love of ales and
beers and the like. And she suspect he would enjoy a bit of delayed satisfaction.
And finally she thinks he would appreciate a bit of chaos at the end, so show a bit
of whimsy in their shared passion. So...

She created what she calls a "nesting knapsack". Open the first knapsack and there you
find a beer or ale. And another knapsack. Take out that second knapsack and inside it you
find... a different ale or beer, and another knapsack. There are 13 such knapsacks, each
one inside the other, each with a different beer or ale from all over thera. Until!
The final, 13th knapsack, contains a vodka martini from the bar above the ruins.
Something different at the end, the tip of the hat to her embracing chaos with her passion.
(Note: If I'd realized how difficult it was going to be logistically, I'd have come up
up with something else!) :)

She visited the shrine and left her gift, with a note to the lord. She is optimistic
they will meet soon. It is uplifting to her to have spiritual fulfilment along with
the martial efforts she expends every day in the war against magic.
