Description

The figure before you stands at just over three feet tall and is covered with coarse and mottled gray skin. A countless number of battle scars mar his flesh and the wrinkles of age have shown clearly. His wiry white hair falls from his head in an unkempt mess which reaches down to his narrow shoulders and his ears protrude from under his hair on either side of his head, each pierced with large hoops of smoky gem. His large eyes are a deep hue of purple, nearing black, and where they may have once sparkled like large gems they are now dull with age and the burden of countless sorrows and bloodshed that this obviously veteran warrior has seen. His jaw is covered with a wiry beard which is gathered together by a bit of dark leather at its end and reaches down to his chest, partially hiding his thin lips. His long and sinewy arms each end with oversized hands that are covered with thick callouses and scars. He wears several simple trophies about his neck and waist that are made up of small bones of various humanoids in varying states of decomposition, some still having chunks of sinew and flesh clinging to them.

Role

The earth will claim you.

Added Tue Nov 18 10:11:49 2008 at level 51:
As Gahthos final end draws near he has been reflecting on the things that
have come to pass. Those he has accomplished, which have been many, and those
he was unable to. Gahtho still regrets never learning the berserkers way of
channeling his rage into his blows but he has held his own in combat. He had
hoped to earn his Ladys mark and earn the honor of his name being etched
into the pillar. He had hoped to serve as Commander to the Village but as his
life dwindles that becomes less of a possibility for him. Unless a miracle
were to occur, he would not participate in the Rites. If he did manage to
secure the Commanders Banner he would not be able to serve long enough to do
the Village credit. During his time as Drillmaster he has taken on both roles
and feels honored at the chance to do so.

Gahtho has grown to consider the Villagers family. A recent revelation of his
made him realize that he views most of them like his children. Perhaps
because of the loss of his own or simply because he has watched them all grow
so much and has shared bloodshed with them. His largest concern with his life
ending is the state of the Village. He is worried about how they will do when
he is gone and prays that they remain strong and honorable. Gahtho hopes that
he can hold out until the Rites are called so that new leaders may be named,
he hates the idea of leaving the Village without mortal guidance.

Waning health and an inner debate.

Added Wed Nov 12 08:24:55 2008 at level 51:
As Gahthos body begins to grow frail he has been reflecting on his life more
and more. There is so much yet undone and so much he wishes to achieve and
because of this he has grown a bit more cautious but tries to stay true to
his cause and himself. He hopes to see the rites in his lifetime and be
healthy enough to serve as Commander should he be selected. He wishes to
continue on the path of the Stonemason and perhaps one day learn to read the
runes that are inscribed within the cavern near his Ladys altar. There is a
group of young Villagers coming up through their guilds ranks and he would
love to see them all succeed.

In the past he may have had a hard time separating courage with reckless
abandon but he has made an effort to be more weary. He has lived a full life,
collected his fair share of skulls, and believes he has served the Village
well but is far from ready to leave this war just yet.

Gahtho has been considering appealing to his patroness to restore some of his
health through Her divine forge-work but is afraid of sounding weak or
afraid. He will have to weight his options carefully and find out within
himself if it is something he should approach Her with or something that he
should simply accept.

Gahtho's hut: A burrow in the vale.

Added Tue Nov 11 11:14:48 2008 at level 51:
The entrance to a burrow has been dug into a small mound in the vale, nothing
more then a simple arched hole about four feet round which is lined with
polished skulls. A crystalline stream runs about ten feet past its entrance
as it snakes its way through the vale and between them a small fire-pit has
been dug and is filled with burnt wood and charred bones. Two banners fly
outside of the burrow, the first is the mark of the Drillmaster and the
second one which bares a star-shaped mark lined with small images of
stone-masonry tools.

The inside of the burrow is much larger then the outside would suggest. A
wide open space has been dug in the stone and earth of a mound by an expert
hand. There are several stone supports around the outside reach of the dome
and each is carved with images of war, stone-masonry, and a dwarven figure
who bares a star-shaped design. It appears that great attention was paid to
the carvings, especially that of the dwarven figure as gems and metals were
used to make it appear as if it was giving off a faint glow. The walls of the
burrow are lined with pelts, skulls, and other macabre trophies of war and
banners similar to the ones outside are displayed.

A small update. Age: 277

Added Tue Nov 11 10:59:07 2008 at level 51:
Gahthos live has been a rather interesting one, so far. So many people that
he had gotten close to have gone. His entire life seems to be centered around
loss. His family, every friend he makes, they never seem to remain. The only
thing that seems constant is his rage and the bloodshed. They all seem to be
as stones but erode much quicker, turning to dust and leaving behind only the
impression of their existence. He still cries for his family at night, when
he is alone in his burrow, but tries to hide it from his men. He also still
morns the loss of his good friend Charunycain.

Recently Gahtho was approached by the Destructor and was given thanks. It
could not have been at a better time as it seemed to energize Gahtho and give
him the strength to continue in this war. He is not ready to retire yet, and
likely never will be, but it renewed his spirit. He thanked him for his
continued persistence in the war and taught him a lessons that he had learned
from the monks himself. Gahtho was truly honored at the chance to train with
the mighty warrior and that he had noticed Gahthos efforts. Gahtho hopes
that he can be around for the day of the next Rites so that he can have a
chance to fly the Commanders banner over his hut.

Gahtho continues to follow his religious beliefs and walks the path of the
Apprentice Stonemason, he hopes that he will have proved himself and be
knowledgeable enough to be an honored Stonemason one day, perhaps even earn
the mark of his Lady. He has shaped his life so much, it is amazing to look
back at how he started. A simple farmer now charged with the oversight of the
mightiest warriors in Thera. A rough chunk of gem has been polished to a
brilliant shine.

Gahtho has recently realized how many of the dwarven traits he has taken on
and was pondering where he picked them up. Perhaps it was all the time spent
with the dwarven kin in the underside and continuing even today along with
welcoming Lady Ysaloeryes essence within himself. It doesnt bother him, he
simply finds it curious.

A lone walk through the Village.

Added Sat Nov 1 12:52:57 2008 at level 50:
Gahtho took a slow walk through the Village today as the rain fell softly
from the sky. Not simply passing through or sitting around drinking ale and
listening to the drums but a slow and observant walk. He passed by many types
of huts. Some had trophies of skulls outside of their entrance, others had
piles of bones outside. Some polished, others still had decaying flesh
clinging to them. He remembered the first time he entered this Village and
smelled the scent of death and decay, now it simply smells like home. A few
huts had so many skulls they had begun to line the outside of their huts
almost like walls. Some were square, some round. A few were raised off the
ground. One thing they all did have in common is that Gahtho watched each of
them be built. He realized then that he was the eldest of the Village, aside
from Grime and the others that act in a more supportive role in their old
age.

Gahtho thought back at his path, of all the great warriors who have come and
gone. Djabree, the silent killer. He was a deadly one but was never much for
words. His best friend Charunycain, his life was fast and hard. Gahtho still
misses him. Gahtho spent a good deal of his younger life, just like
Charunycain did, without a place in the Village. For awhile the Commander was
unseen, perhaps on some pilgrimage or something. After the passing of
Djabree, Charunycain, and the rise of the former Commander to the heavens,
Gahtho has again found himself alone for some time. Now there are new
warriors rising through their guilds, some finally reaching a stage similar
to Gahtho and being able to aide in the wars better. Things are looking good
but now the Village is without a Commander. Soon the drums of war will sound
and the horns will echo through the ruins, the rites will be called and a new
Commander found. He considered the teachings of his goddess as he walked and
noted how much he has learned and changed. Perhaps one day he will have the
honor of wearing her mark upon his flesh.

Alone has seemed to be a common theme through Gahthos life since the time he
lost his loves. The only one that seems to have been there the whole time is
his patroness, Lady Ysaloerye. He still mourns his family and at times he
can even still find tears when he sits alone on a dark night but for the most
part they have run dry. His patience for others runs short and he finds
himself becoming annoyed with the young more often. Perhaps it is age or
perhaps the war has simply taken its toll on him, hardening him from getting
to close to others.

Perhaps he has simply become a bloodied veteran in this war.

Recent events.

Added Fri Oct 24 23:14:13 2008 at level 43:
Many events have seemed to occurred in a relatively short period for Gahtho.
First, he was accepted as an apprentice stonemason and witnessed am amazing
feat by Lady Ysaloerye. While they were speaking of masonry, he had mentioned
certain tools of the trade. She scoffed at the use of physical tools and
crouched low to the ground. The fireplace crackled and popped, casting a
divine glow across the Ladys features and adding to the awe-inspiring aura
she exudes. She began chanting in a low and deep tone, her voice rumbling
through the mountains and over Gahthos very soul. He could feel the vibration
deep within, her divine might washed over him as he watched. She placed a
stubby hand onto the cold stone of the Inns floor and it soon melted, turning
to a pure molten ore. They spoke of how this ore was deep within Thera and
that Gahtho had to find his own, deep within himself. He had read too much
into the question which was asked before and now believes he knows what fire
fuels his soul. It is the fire of rage. He still mourns the loss of his loves
but does not wallow in pity but instead grows with rage, fueling his soul.

The second major event in his life as of late has been the passing of his
best friend, Drillmaster Charunycain. He was a very brave man and Gahtho has
taken his example and tried to fill himself with the same courage. Sometimes
the war is hard and things seem bleak but he remembers how his friend carried
on and, along with his faith and rage, gives him what he needs to continue.
Gahtho believes Charunycain was a bit reckless, but he got the job done and
was the very embodiment of courage and rage. He was everything a Berserker
should be and will always be in his heart. At the time, he was the only
Villager that Gahtho felt truly close to and he had hoped to one day see him
fly the banner of the Commander. His life had seemed to pass so quickly but
Gahtho had learned many lessons from him. He still mourns his passing.

The third major event was being named Drillmaster. It was truly an honor,
especially to have his goddess give him the banner to put over his burrow and
to be following in the steps of his late friend. As Gahtho gripped the
traditional blade of the Drillmaster he felt a deep kinship with all those
that came to pass. So many others have wielded the very blade, so many brave
and strong ancestors from the Villages past. Gahtho wonders how old the blade
truly is, could it have been in the first war?

What fuels a Mason's Heart: First meeting with the Bawdy Biddy.

Added Wed Oct 8 08:26:24 2008 at level 36:
Gahtho had met with lady Ysaloerye recently. While the meeting was brief, he
was glad to have the chance to meet Her in person and was rather impressed
with Her personality and presence, he is glad he has selected Her path to
walk in life. After slaying a magi, Gahtho prayed that She could find some
worthy use for that bit of the mages soul. She made him a cake.

Gahtho shared some ale and spoke more at length with one of Her priestesses
about the Paragon and left feeling as if he had gained some of the knowledge
he had sought, glad they had the discussion. He was asked to answer the
question what is the fire which fuels a masons heart and told he could seek
some answers in the Masons cavern. He spent many hours in the cavern,
admiring the work and observing some of the masons there. He was very
impressed with the amazing detail the statues had but one left him feeling a
bit sad, it was incomplete as if the mason had simply lost their interest. He
saw a table there that had a few masons gathered around it, they were
studying some runes which were carved on it but Gahtho was unable to read
them. Perhaps one day he will learn the script and be blessed with the
ability to garner the written knowledge of those runes. Gahtho has decide
that the answer to the question is passion. Each work was done with such
painstaking detail the masons who carved them surly most apply the same to
their lives. Passion fuels their hearts, passion for the art and passion to
make changes and improvements as they see fit for whatever path in life they
may walk.

Discovering Ysaloerye.

Added Fri Oct 3 16:05:33 2008 at level 22:
Gahtho has heard the name of a dwarven goddess named Ysaloerye many times in
the under-side, not only by the dwarves he would often work with but my many
miners, blacksmiths, and stonemasons. He has decided to seek Her as his
patron in the hopes of obtaining Her blessings in his quest to reshape the
word. He knows that is is a far stretch to believe he will end all magic in
Thera, but he knows he can make a change. It is within his power to chisel
away at the stone but he realizes that with great works it often takes more
then one smith or mason and as such, he has became an applicant to a village
of mighty warriors who have similar goals.

He hopes that She can help him to harness his rage as well, to use it as a
tool to further his goals. He still has a hard time dealing with the loss of
his loves and they are often in his thoughts but it seems as if his sorrow is
always replaced by rage. What was once a simple miner and farmer has been
called to combat by the deepest reaches of his soul, he knows that combat is
needed to make a change and prays for the wisdom and strength of the earth to
help him on his path.

Background and history.

Added Sun Sep 28 15:40:07 2008 at level 4:
Gahthokarahzen Vehgtalzalen, or simply Gahtho Vehgtal, was born deep in the
tunnels of the underdark to an average family. He has two brothers, a sister,
and loving parents. From an early age he had helped his father in the crystal
fields, mining and collecting. As with most of his race he greatly enjoys
being within the earths embrace and working with stone. His early years were
average and somewhat uneventful, he went through what most young men do and
was content with his life.

At the young age of forty Gahtho married a young svirfnebli that he had grown
up with and together they purchased a small piece of land to mine and farm.
The couple were deeply in love and they never seemed to argue. They may
disagreements, but they always talked through any issues that came up and
came to a middle ground. It was bliss. After being married for a few years
they had a child, a beautiful female. Gahtho was living his dream life,
nothing could be better. He had a wonderful family and his own land to farm
and mine.
The bliss did not last long however. Shortly after their first child was
born, Gahthos father and brothers were killed. They were out working to
lengthen a tunnel and preparing a new bit of land that his father had
recently acquired when there was an odd cave-in, burring them all beneath the
stone. They were always so careful and tedious, Gahtho found it hard to
believe that they were responsible or that they simply had an accident. The
next day a crew of various races came to town for supplies. Apparently they
had been mining some areas just outside of the reaches of Gahthos home using
powerful magics to quickly excavate the land and mine the gems and other
minerals. At first the citizens saw them as a source of income, they
purchased many supplies quite frequently so they were eagerly welcomed. The
crew of oversiders had been able to mine enormous amounts of raw materials
utilizing their magics and the citizens began to feel its effects. It took
the commoners weeks to harvest a fraction of what the oversiders could
harvest in a day. Because of the shear bulk the oversiders were harvesting,
they sold the raw materials at a much lower price then the commoners could.

Poverty began to set in as their economy plunged into despair. Commoners went
hungry, supplies were running short, and their water supplies had somehow
become tainted. Another cave-in occurred killing more then a dozen of the
local citizens, the cause was a mispronounced syllable and careless planning
of the oversiders. The oversiders were no longer welcome and groups of the
commoners began to protest. Gahtho had joined a small group of svirfnebli
that led the protests and assembled rallies in an attempt to drive the
unwelcome oversiders away. The oversiders lashed out, unpleased with the idea
of having to move their mining operation while it was going so well for them.
Two members of the small protest group were found murdered and it caused
outrage. Everyone knew the oversiders had committed the murders but there was
little that they could do. Gahtho and a close friend began to make plans to
sabotage the oversiders in the hopes that they would finally leave. After
their third and final meeting before they intended to carry out their plans
Gahtho arrived home to find his wife and
