Description

The short creature before you stands with haunted eyes, his gaunt face staring about. His hair is thin, grayed, and unkempt, and has the vague resemblance of advanced age or ghastliness. His features present as once svirfneblin, but what was once bulbous now appears to sag and deform. His thin skin clings to his decrepit frame, wrinkled and macerated from the waters. A few damp clothes cling to him and you notice drops of water pool and fall at the ends. No meaningful trinkets or treasures adorn him but that of a simple satchel tied by a cord and hung around his neck, which with his hunched frame seems to droop him with an unbearable weight. He moves with the gait of one long disoriented from the lands, lost and scouring without focus as the light seems to fade from his dimming eyes, and as his gaze meets your own, a bestial hunger seems to shadow briefly at the sight of you.

Role

The Spirit Gems.

Added Tue Oct 22 14:49:44 2024 at level 51:
Running his hand across the amethyst gemstone, the young svirfnebli closed his
eyes and slowed his breathing, listening, feeling, waiting.

-Do you feel it,- the elder mystic asked, -the memories, the emotions. Do you
see what this one once saw? That one was your greater grandfather. I rememember
him still.- he smiled, the age of his face barely bending the ancient skin of
his toughened complexion.

Gesoros stilled his being, and he felt it, whispers and indecipherable images
coming and going like the faintest of reverberations of a cavern echo. But he
felt it, a loving warmth of familial pride in him. This amethyst, it spoke to
him, and the placid life of contentment encouraged him, even personally.

The mystic continued to smile, eager to teach and reveal.

-Here, in our Grove of Gemstones, our ancestors remain. Even in death, She
guides them here, to be born again, as gems for us to safeguard, their spirits
waiting for another birth, reincarnation, unto Her cycle. In life, there is
death, and much between, and it comes around again, and again, and again.-

The younger svirf stared about, hundreds, thousands, of gems grown into the
stone walls. They were not placed there, but formed, and delicately found
by the caretakers, guarded for millennia in the safety of the underdark not
far from Cragstone.

-What will you return as, Gesoros?- the mystic mused, -a ruby, an emerald,
or peridot, or some other precious stone? Time will tell, as Her days
unfold and you with Her!- The elder chuckled a bit. -She is our diamond,
Gesoros, wild, uncut, and a thousand facets to see Her through, with all
of the colors through the prism made known. You will find Her nearer yet.-

Distanced from the more orderly and guarded of Cragstone, these reclusive
svrifnebli found peace in Thar-Eris. She provided, and they abided, and
life was blessed.

The Day the Colors Died.

Added Tue Oct 22 14:50:27 2024 at level 51:
The quietness of the sanctuary permeated the hallowed grounds and peace was
upon the handful of svirfnebli searching the walls for growth. They listened
for the whisper of spirits to guide them, that Her light shine within the
gemstones.

A rumbling upset the tranquility, silencing the hushed prayers and magical
incantations. Odd.

There had been no reports of thoqqua activity in the area, but even then, the
thoqqua had never crossed the magical boundaries of this haven, and kept
their appetite for minerals far away.

But again, a rumbling, this time more unsettling, nearer.

These svirfnebli were not guardsmen or warriors, and a fright slowly came
over them as the deep earth shook harder and its echoes rang louder.

Suddenly, the northern wall of the cavern sanctuary collapsed, and bursting
through the massive hole strode a monstrosity of an umber hulk. It loomed
six times the height of the svirfnebli, and its mandibles clacked in
ravenous appetite as its four eyes surveyed the meal before it.

Some scrambled, others froze in a confused stupor, as the mineral claws
snatched svirf after svirf and devoured each whole. It smashed the eastern
wall and gemstones fell to the ground like candy treats to a child as the
beast gobbled them up too.

Gesoros cried aloud in anguish. He heard the scream of the spirits as they
fell to the floor, into the gaping maw of the monster. He felt their silence
as they were crushed to dust, vanquished from the realm, from Her cycle,
forever and ever.

The abominable beast fixated on the young deep-gnome, and, lunged with its
considerable bulk at Gesoros.

A wave of reverence and magic washed over him, a calm prescience as the
collective wisdom of the cavern spirits filled him with experience and
knowledge never known to him, albeit briefly.

He jumped to the side, and rolled, evading the clutch of the beast just in
time. A small tunnel was to his side, and with little time afforded him,
Gesoros gathered up a handful of his spirit-kin, and found the safety exit
to crawl away, far away.

As he scrambled, the weight of the loss struck him. Tears, dread, fright,
all washed over him, and the love of his people and home faded out, like
candles snuffed one after another until only the darkness remained. As the
beast ransacked the holiest of places, he felt each ancestral spirit go
silent, again, again, again, and again, and the wake of his tears emptied
him completely.

The Perilous Overside.

Added Tue Oct 22 14:51:20 2024 at level 51:
Through chutes and caverns and ever up, Gesoros crawled and climbed for what
seemed like days, eventually finding daylight of the overside. He felt the
breeze of Her wind and the foreign smells of wild growth before stepping into
the setting sun and long shadows.

His shoulders hunched, he wandered the overside for days, and weeks, subsiding
on what he could find with the few possessions he escaped with. But, She
provided, and he found some measure of relief, if not rejoicing.

Worse, this overside was not at all like the holy haven he came from. Danger
lurked from many factions, and he soon found some of the more perilous of it.

As he crossed the great eastern road, some barbarous minotaur took notice of
him, seemingly sensing the significant pool of mana he possessed as a sorcerer.
Rage and hatred turned into conflict, and Gesoros fled east, trying to distance
himself from the brute.

As he came near a bridge over a great river, an enclave of centurions blockaded
him from passage.

-Pay your tribute or turn back.- the guard menaced.

-Sirs, I have nothing to offer! And this savage creature bears down on us!-

From the shadows a duergar came into sight and pushed him down.

-Pay. Or perish,- it seethed and pushed him again. The duergar looked west and
took note of the closing distance of the minotaur. -Hurry it up, runt.- But
Gesoros had nothing to offer. Sneering, the Imperial picked up the svirf by
the ankle and held him over the bridge and began to shake him. -Pay!- it
insisted, -or die!-

Eyes wild with fright at the rushing river below, Gesoros could not catch his
breath to even speak. He had never swam before, never really seen water of much
depth, and the roar of the water terrified him. The duergar continued to shake him
upside down, and soon slipped the first gem, as large as his hand, then the next,
an emerald, a few others, and at last out slipped the amethyst, the spirit of his
greater grandfather plunging down into the river.

-GRANDIEEeeeeee-!!- He cried out, once again dismayed as the whispers of the
ancient spirit descended, quieted, and vanished from him.

Disgusted, and with a battle now imminent, the thief discarded Gesoros to his
demise to be swallowed by the water.

Guiding Waters.

Added Tue Oct 22 14:51:46 2024 at level 51:
Water roared about him. Up was down, then sideways, and he tumbled in the churn
upon rock and stone, eventually washing past an expansive seaport to wash ashore
upon a beach. Alive he was, but destitute, lost, and alone.

He stared out in disbelief at his misfortune, taking in the full sight of the
ocean before him as it stretched seeming forever. He had never seen something
so expansive, and trepidation came over him.

Somewhere, out there, were the last remnants of his past, of what tethered him
to his ancestry, of what guided him unto Her, and Thar-Eris. Did these people
even know of Her, he wondered.

Yet what was lost must be found, such was his attaching love to his kind. This
could not be, would not be, the end of his journey. He would find the gemstones
of his people, and perhaps others, that their safeguarding be had, their rebirth
come, and Her ways spring new and prosper.

He steadied his beating heart, committing that he would brave the deepest of
waters until he found what it was he was searching for. This loss would not be
eternal nor complete, for even empty handed so much remained.

A Tree of Life to Love.

Added Mon Oct 28 08:53:22 2024 at level 51:
-Mreowr Gesoros.- nonchalantly spoke the felar.

Two emerald eyes stared at the small svirfnebli, centuries of wisdom probing and
evaluating. The ancient one called Ergush bid him to the Tree, where Gesoros had
made his pledge some time ago to remain in Her cycle ever nearer.

He had wandered much of the lands since then, foreign to him and the holy cavern
from which was all he had known of growing up. The abundance staggered him, but
so too did the corruption, not only of the wilds but within the heart and greed
of its inhabitants.

Soaring mountain peaks, winds over fields of gold, the suffocation of tepid swamps,
and of course all the waterways which brought life throughout, it was not enough
to them, to the usurpers, to the defilers.

But it was more than enough for Gesoros, and the love he felt for this creation
compelled him as defender, protector, and fury. Such devotion yet stirred him,
a reminder of what was lost behind him, not so much in substitution but a
continuance of all he held near and dear.

The ancient felar questioned him thoroughly, and at long last inquired if -Gesoros
is sure this is what want? To fight that for Her?- Without a doubt the svirf
would serve the cause of Thar-Eris and tend to its uprising.

Many ancient spirits yet swirl and whisper and stir the lands for more, guiding
a return unto Her. Gesoros found his home, a new tree from which fruit yet sprouts.

Spooky Heritage.

Added Sat Nov 9 19:49:20 2024 at level 51:
The cavern rumbled and the tremors grew mightily by the moment. The guards clenched
weapons tightly, afraid of what may turn the corner further north of the Kings Tunnel,
out from the newly excavated passage.

Fear turned to delight, though, as a writhing, eyeless worm barreled toward them,
when suddenly it twisted and collapsed in on itself while simultaneously sprouting
arms and legs from where there were non before.

The guard gasped, then smiled and greeted the sorcerer, -Hail Undersider, welcome to
the great underground city of Cragstone!- Mesmerized at the spectacle, they gawked
and chattered amongst themselves, for they had never seen a thoqqua themselves.

Gesoros waved at them, his damp clothes clinging still to his thin arms, always
wet from his time in the waters, but he had grown comfortable enough to the
discomfort of soggy skin and dripping clothing.

-If not friend, then why friend shaped?!- Gesoros said chuckling as he greeted the
guards in return. The joy of the form buoyed his spirit.

He made his way through Upper Cragstone to discuss some things with Traxxilnia, the
guildmistress who had helped him along with much of his magical revelation and
learning.

-Look at you, Gesoros, a great gift you bear on behalf of our kind,- she said.

Gesoros considered it for a moment, letting the weight of it all sit with him.
-Remarkable, it is, to so bear the heritage of our people. I am blessed indeed,
and out of great sorrow and regret new giftings are discovered. All the more,
to swim Her waters, to discover Her pathways of the underside, without arms or
legs as eel or thoqqua, it is a delight!- the maturing svirfneblin responded.

-I feel them, my lost ancestors, ever nearer as the eyeless thoqqua. Being
without sight, it seems to heighten this, this feeling, all the more, especially
as I am below. To dwell, and remember,- he trailed off.

Traxxilnia smiled at him, her eyes never wiser or kinder than that moment.

-Guide well, our people, Gesoros, those who remain still, and those who will
come anew.-

Pleased yet meditative, Gesoros took to magic again, and his arms and legs slid
inward while his skin turned slick, then slimy, and his body bulbous, and an
electricity hummed about the morphing chamber as Gesoros took to the form of
the eel and slid into the underground aquifer below to meditate and remember
all the more.

The Well in the Cathedral.

Added Sun Nov 10 10:38:24 2024 at level 51:
Trepidation nearly overwhelmed Gesoros as he felt his way through the fog.
The sound of the sea's waters lapping at the shore interspersed with other
sounds, ominous, almost like the wailing of a woman in a foreign tongue.

Gesoros, still unseasoned and unwise to turn back, trudged onward through
the foggy shallows, until he found the derelict city square, guarded by
dilapidated statues, yet new life and white flowers springing forward.

He clutched his still wet cloak about him, drenched from the Sea, and found
no warmth except that within his darkened bag. Rummaging through its
contents, he again examined the three righteous gemstones, most important
to him the ruby, from which whispered the wisdom of one of the ancient
Cavern mystics from a millennia before him.

A sudden fright escaped audibly as he turned and there stood a tiny doll
shambling about. -He, hello,- he managed to stammer, nervous, fearful.
-I came, hearing of this Cathedral, of Loss, to pay respects, and to
see these three off unto the beyond,- he explained.

-Well, why dont you do it!- and led him into the cathedral, before a
great and darkened well which devoured even the shadows. Gesoros looked
about, greatly nervous about the place, the procession, and felt a fish
out of water as the weight of the place bore down upon him. But he owed
this to his beloved ancestors, to himself, and mustered some resolve to
half-kneel at the well. Saying a few prayers, to what, or who, yet, he
let each gemstone plumbed from the depths of the waters go, disappearing
into the maw of the well. The emerald, the ruby, and last, the amethyst,
swallowed by the darkness of the well.

As Gesoros shared his story how he came here, of the weight of survivorship,
love lost yet remaining in some form, and to find Rahsael, who he knew as
the patron to mourners. And he certainly came to mourn.

A wisdom unlike any other was about the doll. It, comforted? him, about
what will be forgotten, everything. It examined the gemstones, tapping
and listening, and almost empathizing about the loss from the underside.

Until.

Never Only a Curse.

Added Sun Nov 10 10:39:25 2024 at level 51:
-This beast, it ate them?- the doll inquired. -Did your loved ones taste
good?- The question shocked Gesoros, and he recoiiled aghast at the thought.
The doll made a licking of lips sound, an audible yum, as it continued.
-Did it just eat your friends without seeming to value their life at all?
A lot like you just ate that lamg leg in front of me.- The doll pressed.

Confusion and horror washed over Gesoros as realization began to set in.
Was he different than the umber-hulk?

-You loss is special, is it not?- it asked. Gesoros felt attacked,
vulnerable to such thoughts he had never considered. Why did he feel
different, what was his holiness or love wrecked back then different than
something like his plucking of berries from a bush, or harvesting from
the wilds quail or rabbit or even mushrooms.

-Does the lamb get a spirit stone?- the attack continued. Or was it?
-To you, this wa a great loss. To the umber-hulk, this was a great
blessing. But you, where would you be now if that had never happened?-

Gesoros reflected, on safety, contentment, a united love. The doll
turned his world upside down. Would he trade all that had unfolded to
return to talking to gems and cultivating history? Giggling, the doll
affirmed, -It was a blessing, after all!-

-Blessed are the Lost!- And for the first time, Gesoros began to see
beyond his own limitations. It coalesced, not yet with the fullest of
clarity, of the relationship between sorrow and gain, love and
loss, mourning and revelation.

What may wax may wane. How things can change, that nothing remains
the same.

He had braved Her waters, to find what he had lost, and discovered so
much more. Like a rock cast into the sea, the splash and ripples
cascading outward cause other things to happen, to change, the doll
explained. The sorrow was not gone, the loss remained, but the
discomfort of the Cathedral no longer pressed him with fear, or blame,
instead washed away with new treasures within.

The doll taught one final lesson, for loss is -never only a curse.-

Blessed are the Lost.

The Harvest Moon.

Added Thu Nov 21 11:34:09 2024 at level 51:
Deep in the underside the duergar grieved Her. Magics had even summoned
forth a terrifying titanic demon full of fury and flames. Ertruza, the
demon lord of fire, was barely held at bay, and Gesoros fought to banish
the foul creature.

As the battle waxed and waned, a crusader of the light found them. Sian,
an Initiate of the Jaguar, radiated light from the glorious abundance of
armors upon his giant frame.

-Hail.- the paladin said, expectantly. Gesoros nodded in return. This
knight was unwelcome, too young to be in this place, and the ordered
holiness irritated the svirfnebli. Looking at the paladin, Gesoros weighed
what his intent may be, judging him for his clear avarice. -You fight the
demon?- he inquired.

-I do. It is, angered,- replied Gesoros.

-I will gladly aid in its destruction,- the paladin remarked, not asking,
but imposing. To the giant, Gesoros shrugging likely meant he did not
mind the aid, but within, Gesoros knew how this would unfold. This giant
acted beyond the pall of hope, a righteous entitlement.

Such would be his downfall for the shadows of sorrow were nearer yet.

Gesoros returned to its battling of the demon, and each time the knight
fought from behind. As the thoqqua and demon clashed, Gesoros observed
the predictable patterns of the knight, waiting, anticipating, for the
altar to be set with its sacrifice.

Hope welled, for soon the demon gushed blood and its death seemed imminent.

Flames of the abyss scoured the two, burning both greatly, and, predictably,
the knight rallied himself for more, more. It was at this moment that
Gesoros withdrew, leaving the paladin to champion its own fight against the
demon. The battle waged, then,

Silence. The heat from the summoning chamber cooled, and the agony of
death reverberated throughout the cavern no more.

There upon the pentagram of the dimly lit room, illuminated by the faint
glow of five candles, smoldered the hewn remains of the paladin Sian.
Gesoros knelt outside the circle and prayed his offering to Lord Rahsael.

-Delight, Lord, for in the hope of crusade, there is loss! Always there is
a beast which lurks, as it is this demon to devour the priest so.-

To be so abandoned, to have faith overwhelmed unto death, to feel the flames
of the abyss when devoted so much to the rising phoenix, is to know Loss.

There in the unknown, the vertigo, to be lost, is to be blessed.

Life waxes and wanes. So, too, does death. In joy is sorrow, in hope
is disappointment, in courage is doubt, in abundance is nothing, and in
meaning is loss.

The paladin came assured of victory, plunder, and camaraderie. What was
revealed was a different blessing, of Loss, and thanksgiving made.

Dim the Lights unto Dark.

Added Sun Nov 24 18:03:19 2024 at level 51:
Gesoros stumbled through the abandoned mines, his mind gone,
his ears ringing, and chaos fragmenting his mind into insanity.
As long ago, he climbed, up and up and up, seeking the overside,
looking for refuge from the darkness below.

He had been sharpening his instincts, looking for some prowess
of the thoqqua, wondering why he felt such a limp todger in its
shape. Devouring Her rocks, he found himself at times hardened,
harder, yet never rivaling the might of the more ancient, wilder
worms burrowing erect through Her underside.

Desperation brought him alas to the overside, and he made his
way to the Cathedral. He had no real recollection or thought
of this, only that he was haunted, then there.

But there was nearly catatonic. His eyes widened and rolled,
saliva drooled and dribbled, and, though seeking the statues
out, he instead found himself at the trough in the crumbling
stable.

To a sane person, a destitute svirfnebli crawled on all fours
and stared into the eyes of a docile pig.

Yet to Gesoros, more was afoot. The obese sow rose upon her
hind trotters with a divine wisdom unlike even the gnomes, and
together, insight was shared between the two.

-Look at you,- said the sagacious sow, -even the gods mock.-

Gesoros could barely muster a response and grunted.

-There is loss, even in recognition, in victory. Do you feel
it?- the sow snickered, oinking and snorting uncontrollably.
-Do you know it? You win, yet you lose, and your meagerness
continues. The Guardian, Ergush, mocks you yet. What, now?
You take to chameleon swifter? Prey, hides. You survive, and
regain a measure of insignificant health?-

The sow continued to seed her darkness with profound truth.

-Mourn at what eludes you if you desire. But it will always
shackle you if you do. How many spirits remain unaccounted?-

Gesoros considered and counted, nine, nine of the spirit gems
he had found in the oceans, of perhaps fifteen. Nine he had
set unto the well, into darkness.

-Abandon your love,- the sow seethed at him. -Let the
darkness take them there, or here, but let it go.-

-The monster does not mourn. The monster does not hide, it
hunts. The monster does not fear, the monster, it devours,-
and the pig returned to the trough upon all four trotters,
working her way through the slop with glee.

Gesoros crawled into the cathedral, barely mobile from from
this stupor, and managed to make it to the bottomless well.
There, he stared into the nothingness, and the light of his
eyes dimmed, then darkened, and was there no longer, his
hope disappearing into the depths of the well.

What once waxed, then waned, faded, and darkened.

The Pool of Reflection.

Added Wed Dec 4 16:10:46 2024 at level 51:
Gesoros knelt at the edge of the pool. The day was long and
drifting into the evening, yet he caught his reflection in the
still waters. Aged, thin, and macerated by centuries in the
waters as a vagabond, his reflection no longer startled him.

He wasnt the svirfnebli of his youth.

The sun continued to set, and while the hours felt as mere
moments, he observed himself.

By each passing moment, his reflection became longer and all
the more distorted, the shape more ghastly, his features more
grotesque, and beastly, and his eyes darkening and vacant.

He did not look away, and instead kept still to absorb the
passage of time, the passing of the past, the path of some
new perfecting thing.

Though the sun once waxed, it fell into the eastern horizon
now, and darkness came about. Still, he persisted, watching
as the night crept into being, and the moon rose, then waned.

And through it all, he saw it, this metamorphosis of himself.
For into the night, a new shape replaced the old one, and
what once was, no longer is, for in the darkness something
new took over, some beast, unreined, unbridled, untethered.

A Father to Embrace.

Added Sun Dec 8 16:10:23 2024 at level 51:
The statuesque man neared to embrace him, and before the cold enveloped
Gesoros, the warm rush of internal emotion flashed and colored him briefly.
But then, the sorrow washed over him.

Visions of his past snapped through his mind, vivid and sad.

He remembered the families of upper Cragstone, and how they gathered
together for their festivities. He remembered his own family from the
Grove of Gemstones, extended and ancient and united. But mostly, he
saw his own father, more clear than ever in the two hundred years
since losing them. Two centuries of loneliness, of resolute love
missing, unreturned.

He had not found what he thought he might find with other spirits in
the Tree of Outlanders.

Yet here, his Lord Rahsael, who welcomed him, embraced him, and for the
first time in those two hundred years he heard aloud -My child, you are
home.- It was enough to physically rock the svirfneblin.

Though the sorrow physically pained him, His touch stone-cold, and
seemingly wrong, he welcomed the affection, and it filled a void he knew
not was so desolate for one so destitute.

Why had the porcelain doll warned him so many times away from this love?
Why was it so saddened and angsty to keep a new family member away?
Gesoros could only wonder, yet he kept its advice near in mind, but the
yearning prevailed.

The Monster had frightened Gesoros for a time, and likely still so, but
Gesoros needed this moment, but more than that, he needed a Father's
love.

He welcomed the embrace, and returned it, and found himself enthralled
unto his Father's eyes and Mysteries.

The Bonfire Extinguished.

Added Wed Jan 8 10:35:50 2025 at level 51:
The soft roar of the bonfire sent shadows flickering in and out of the
grove. The light was unpredictable, and in the dead of night the scene
cast an eerie feeling within the grove.

Gesoros watched for a long while, thinking, considering, before he
eventually pulled one of the logs at the top from the fire. It scattered
embers into the night, and he cast it aside, watching as the light of
its fire dimmed. This one was not so hot.

He then plucked one from the base, barely grimacing in the searing pain
of its red-hot fuel, and cast it aside. The bonfire shifted, unstable,
and not only did the log he pulled die out faster, the entire fire soon
diminished.

A sly grin came over his haunted face, and he pulled and threw another
piece of burning wood, and another, and another. He welcomed the pain,
embracing it, as the palm of his hands screamed in anguish, focusing
on the pain reminding him that he still lived.

But as he dismantled the bonfire, the shadows dancing less and less,
the darkness pushed in as the light dimmed lower and lower. Greater
was the light and warmth together.

So Gesoros took delight in his scheme, eager toto bask in the love
of his Father, Lord Rahsael, as he dimmed the light of knowledge.

Many of the factions of the lands aligned together, adjacent yet
comfortable. The Spire, the Fortress, even the Chasm, all orbited
around the Heralds, the curators and guardians of knowledge. And
yet each took the bait of this plot concocted, some more eager than
others, of a stirring, a return, of the god of Saraba.

Gesoros cast his seeds of deception into the hand of some, and the
winds for others, and they took root. Some died upon the rock
ground, some choked within the thicket of thorns, but many took
root in the fertile mind of the factions, eager to be significant,
or for dark knowledge, some to kneel at this Saraba, and even a few
to draw sword and fight back the night of this return.

But the division was set, trust turning into mistrust, past trauma
raising monsters born of fear, and even strife. Doubt and conflict
eroded the relationships, turned hope into mourning, and the fruit
of sorrow and darkness spread across the realm.

As Gesoros watched, the individual pieces of the fire each went
cold, and dark, and he rejoiced.

The Hand Which Feeds.

Added Mon Feb 17 15:23:55 2025 at level 51:
Gesoros leaned back in to the waters of the Sea of Despair and
floated in the darkness beyond midnight. The stars above him
twinkled, each one raising a distant memory of his past. He
closed his eyes and remembered . . .

The small cave lizard darted out from underneath the hooves
of an adult rothe, searching for a safer place to rest. The young
child gave chase, cautiously, to not spook the wild creature too
much. Eventually cupping it with his hands, he beamed with pride
as the capture of his new friend. The child, a young Gesoros,
meandered back to the safety of the Holy Cavern, to place his new
found pet in a small urn.

Over the days, he tried to nurture the wild creature, first feeding
it small bits of fungus and mushrooms, and later smaller insects
harvested from the underside tunnels.

But the lizard took nothing, it only stared, unblinking, unmoving.

Near the end of many days, Gesoros, saddened by the creature,
reached in to see if it even moved, or if it had passed away in
under his care. The lizard snapped at his childish finger and
drew blood with its small bite. Gasping aloud at the unexpected
viciousness of his pet, Gesoros stumbled and knocked over the
urn. The lizard skirted away to safety, to the shadows, free
from its cage.

What he meant for the lizard was not to be. His love, provision,
and nurturing, all of his intentions, were simply not, not for
the lizard, for the wilder things. There was a symbolism to it,
the very safety of the urn instead being a place to wither away
and perish in confinement.

As the memory twisted and faded into the present, the epiophone
of it struck Gesoros. How he yearned for his new Father to
wrap him in a loving embrace, but such would only suffocate his
spirit. Gesoros was a wild creature, and his Father withheld a
love that would only doom him, and dull his instincts.

The beast is not awakened through love, it is loved through its
awakening.

Therein lies the monster of his Father, within him, willing,
even eager, to bite the hand which feeds it, to devour, and to
delight.

Drowning in Love.

The tall saurian stared down at Gesoros, doe-like eyes curious and beaming
with the exhuberance of youth. Though his claws sharp, the comforting
fragrance of wildflowers and pine filled the ashen forest.

An eagerness was upon Sreowah. This one was cherished by Gesoros, one of the
few sentinels of the tree with a vibrancy of life. Sra, the lizard called
it. And weh, of death.

But too much sra tilted the hierophant, and the light required dimming.

Some time ago, Sreowah had told Gesoros of his new friend, a paladin, one
he found of like mind and heart. A protector, nurturing.

But what may wax, must also wane. There is light, but there must also be
the darkness, and even the spirits stir.

Gesoros took Sreowah to one of his favorite places, deep under the ruins of
his Father's cathedral, in the Sea of Despair. A fitting place for a lesson,
for a sacrifice.

It was there they spoke of the natural order of Thar-Eris, of the seasons,
life, and death. To only nurture dulls the instincts. The strong survive.
To hold both in each hand is the path of the sentinels, sra, and weh,
bound equally together.

But that is just a lesson, fit for any day. The saurian believed in his
Harbinger, trusted in him. With his life. A trust unfit for the natural
order of animals, of beasts. So they floated, in the darkened cavern,
as Gesoros guided Sreowah to meditated stillness, calm, serene, until
the supplications tapered, and, as with all things, there was only
the void of darkness.

As his breath failed and his lungs filled with water, his reptilian eyes
widened, and they each bore witness at the light of trust and hope faded.

The saurian drowned, an offering to his Father, a lesson in the kingdom of
the monster.
