Description
A despotic gambling lowlife thug stoops before you with a grim
expression. Mats of curly fiery hair flock across his entire body,
nesting between his heavy but stoic bosoms, and creating a trail
of alcohol, blood, and strange substances near his pelvic area. Carved
proudly on his chest is a dark tattoo of a hammer, a dice, and the word
"Dhrunkul". Loosely covering his right eye, a mangy black patch
dangles to and fro, often showing a hideous burn scarring his fierce gaze.
His bloodshot left eye gleams fiercely, unbroken through the trail of
misfortune that seems to embrace this mendicant. A scraggly unkempt and
unwashed matted red beard dangles near his chest, seemingly
piercing his skin by its toughness. Peculiarly, large hands
calloused through years of working in the forge deftly crush the
air about him as he mockingly practices throwing a dice or crushing
a skull.
The most unusual part of this fiery dwarf are the worn tattered gloves
covering his hands. Strangely there appears to be two additional holes
for fingers on the right hand, and one additional hole for a finger on
the left hand. Each hand convulses slightly, as if besiedged by ghostly
apparitions of a forlorn lover. Upon closer inspection, you see..
Role
A Dwarf with Thirteen Fingers?
Added Thu Jul 13 18:17:32 2023 at level 20:
An earthshattering cry emerged from the newborn dwarven baby as he
emerged into the world. This was accompanied by gasps, some of
discomfort, many of awe, at the extra appendages attached to the
childs hands. The boy was born with two additional fingers on the
right hand, and an extra one on the left hand. Amidst the hushed
whispers from the onlookers, one male dwarf, with a powerful and
commanding presence, briskly stood and took a large step, then
another, then another towards the boy.
By dah thirteen beards of the thirteen grandpapies, ouh boy is
blessed wit da Luck o Whiysdan!
The Patriarch of the Dhrunkul family exclaimed loudly, holding the
baby up for all to see, as a roar emerged from the multicolored
onlookers. This day would mark a new day for the Dhrunkul family,
who was well regarded in the Seaport Hamsah Mutazz as forgesmiths,
boat builders, and most and notably, notorious gamblers that made
their fortune at the dice.
The birth of Ghrunkel Dhrunkul and his thirteen fingers caused a stir
within the Seaport of Hamsah Mutazz. Those that became rich off the
Dhrunkul family blessed their fortune and celebrated with joy. Those
who envied the Dhrunkul family cursed their misfortune and began
planning nefarious machinations.
Family Business

Ghrunkel, yeh rat! Come back here with meh dice!
Ghrunkel, yer lazy slag! Come wit meh an ammeh dese oes!
The howl and nagging voice of Pappy Dhrunkul echoed after Ghrunkel
on a constant basis during his childhood. Ghrunkel was a gifted,
yet rambunctious child, steadfast and stubborn on what he loved
that most gambling at all things, whether with his life or the
Dhrunkul familys fortune. While Pappy Dhrunkul often chased and
yelled at his boy, he was usually in awe at the luck that seemed
to ooze from Ghrunkuls pore. Whenever Ghrunkel picked up a hammer
and concentrated on ironsmithing or forgecrafting, the finished
product was more intricate and stable than the smiths of Akan.
Pappy thought that this was due to Ghrunkels additional fingers,
as those fully functional fingers seemed to add another vestige of
steadiness and expertise to Ghrunkels movement.
Pappy also often brought Ghrunkel to the gambling houses to not only
witness the family business, but also because the dice seemed to
fall the way that brought the Dhrunkuls fortune. Pappy also thought
that this may have been due to Ghrunkels additional fingers, as a
sleight of hands, so to speak, was so much simpler with extra fingers.
Indeed, Ghrunkels entire childhood brought the Dhrunkuls to even
higher fame and fortune with the Seaport of Hamsah Mutazz. Lord Luck,
however, only lasts so much.
Cursed Dice

The silence of the crowd was palpable. The eyes of each onlooker were
glued to a red haired dwarf, well-trimmed and clad in intricately
designed jewelry and metalware, as the dwarf flicked dual dice
between his thirteen fingers. On the opposite end was a lithe drow,
with glowing red eyes clad in a black speckless robe. The drow
seemed to mutter some incantation underneath his breath, before
whispering in a low raspy voice as he fumed at Ghrunkel.
'You will not win this time, dwarf. You took too much from us. The
Conclave is not pleased.'
Ghrunkel stared haughtily at his opponent with a nonchalant smirk on
his face.
"Har! Yeh stupid mages thinkin yer ken beh changin meh luck an fate
wit dese stupid dice? A dice beh a dice, an da Dhrunkul's beh da masteh
o' da dice!"
Ghrunkel unabashedly and courageously through the dice without seeing
the small smirk and look of triumph on the drows face. The onlookers
gasped, as many of them had their life fortune on this role. The
Dhrunkul luck was famous within the Seaport, even moreso than their
ironcrafting business.
Snake eyes.
A low chuckle emerged from the drow, transcending in a high pitched
cackling laughter. The onlookers were astonished, as Ghrunkels infamous
luck seemed to have failed him.
Aftermath
Added Thu Jul 13 18:26:23 2023 at level 20:
It was indeed a dark day from the Seaport and the Dhrunkul family.
Rumors swirled from that roll, how those bloodied dice were cursed by
fourteen witches from different continents. How the Conclave had been
planning for this eventful day since Ghrunkels birth, jealous of the
wealth amassed by the Dhrunkuls luck and forgesmithing. How the
Empire was behind the entire plan, to instill order within the Seaport.
The rumors that were verified swirled around the happenings of that
night after Ghrunkel lost not only his fortune, but the fortune of his
allies. He had been cornered by the Conclave and their mages in an
alleyway after narrowly escaping the angry mass. His prize possessions
were torn asunder, his famous red beard unkempt and burnt, but his
haughty and courageous expression appeared unbroken.
'You do not have your friends to protect you anymore, dwarf. Now we
claim what we truly want.'
The voice of the drow showed its true character as he recited an
incantation, paralyzing Ghrunkel in place. The bloodied dice emerged in
the drows fingers as his hollow laugher echoed with the dice before the
dice shuddered and transformed itself into the winking form of a gnome
shapeshifter.
'Take them.'
Ghrunkel struggled with all his might but was helpless as another
assailant uttered an incantation, creating slices of air across his body,
starting from his leg, crossing his abdomen, and butchering his hair.
Amidst the pain, Ghrunkel realized finally what they truly wanted. It was
too late, as those razor thin air cut off his extra fingers.
"AHHHH MEH FINGEHS!!! YE BASTIDS!!! MEH GUNNA CRUSH YER SKULL!!!"
Perhaps his luck was still working as he broke from the paralysis, but the
assailants were already gone, along with his fingers.
That day the luck of the Dhrunkuls had expired, and Ghrunkel had become a
ten-fingered nobody.
Departing Luck
Added Thu Jul 13 18:27:13 2023 at level 20:
Luck Favors the Bold. These are words that were etched onto the Dhrunkul
family crest. What the crest failed to mention was that luck may also be
the gift of the gods, and without that gift, disaster may unfold, as it
happened to Ghrunkel. Everything he did seemed to lead to a string of
misfortune. He had first attempted to track the Conclave, but not only had
they disappeared without a trace, his friends and family residing at the
Seaport ostracized him. Each time he tried stoking a fire for the forge,
a misty cloud emerged from the sea and put it out. Four-leaf clovers
wilted near him. First it was still-born bunnies, but then, it became
still-born children. Even the gambling den banned him from attending,
saying that he courted the Lady of Misfortune.
Many moons had passed since he lost his fingers. He could no longer roll
the die as he was used to. He had to relearn how to grip a hammer, but his
forgecraft and boat building skills were subpar at best. He had not only
lost his fingers, but also his skills and luck.
***
"Ah farg it! AH'M COMIN FER YER!"
Ghrunkel had used all the wealth of the Dhrunkul family to no avail. He
was penniless and his family leaving the Seaport, spiting Ghrunkel for
the ruins to the family. The information that he amassed regarding the
Conclave was small, for the Seaport only had a limited network. He needed
more kin to support his revenge, to gather his fingers (in whatever
state they are in), and the luck of Lord Whiysdan.
With a grunt and a heave, Ghrunkel Dhrunkul has emerged from the Seaport
of Hamsah to set out on his quest. Luck will Favor the Bold.
