Description
A four and a half foot block of dwarven muscle is before you, barrel chested
and heavy limbed. Erect of posture and light on his feet, his movements are
languid and smooth, and he perambulates with an easy, relaxed stride. The
skin of his palms and knuckles is calloused and peeling from hard use, and
his phalanges are muscular hooks on the ends of his mitts.
Bronzed of skin and hirsutorufous, his mane is chopped roughly above his
ears, save for one long braid that hangs from the back of his head. Beard
and mustache, magnificent even by dwarven standards, are oiled and braided.
The beard braids end in silver caps, from which dangle tiny censers. Out of
the censers, a thick scented incense wafts. The corona of smoke imparted this
way gives this figure's head a smoldering, ethereal aspect.
Steely grey eyes, restless while they are open, gaze coldly from an otherwise
genial countenance. A proud dwarven nose sprouts dense tufts of hair out of
his nostrils, these are trimmed flush and neat. His mouth is quick to smile
and large healthy dimples gleam when his pearly whites are exposed.

G's family were mithril wrights of the Khamarsin clan, who operated a smithy
fed by the underground Vayga river. The smithy was in strata directly below
Baurgnoft cathedral, which also drew water from the Vayga. G spent the first
twenty years of his life learning mining and smithy work. Catastrophe struck
when a demon possessed young dwarf was brought to the Cathedral for treatment.
The possessed one turned out to be a freshly turned undead that a vampyre
lord was working through. Getting eyes into the cathedral was the first step
in the vampyre's plan, and over the ensuing weeks corruption overtook the
clergy and they fell to wasting diseases. G's family had no idea this had
transpired, and one day a young lass washed up on the bank of the smithy
catch basin. G's brother Ernhald spied the soaked wretch and went to rescue
her. She struck as he lifted her to her feet, and in the joy of finding a
meal communicated to her master where to find them. Golzabar did not see
his brother die. Ernhald returned to the smithy late, when the family
was ready for dinner and anxiously awaiting his return. His bloody visage,
lack of color, and lolling eyes told G and his father all they needed to know,
and the family table was overthrown in a struggle that saw Golzabar the only
survivor. Using fire and himself as bait, he lured four more vampire spawn to
their deaths in the smithy, before determining to destroy the attacking coven
by detonating the coke oven gas after overstoking the bores. Golzabar did not
worry about burning to death, the pressure wave when he ruptured the kilns
sure to kill him outright long before his remains burned.
Before he had the time to carry out his plan, a party of templars arrived,
following the trail of undead from the cathedral to the smithy, and put the
vampyre and his minions to rout.
Golzabar buried his family members and took an offer to join the templars.
First as a smith and porter, later as a squire. Through his exposure to these
fine dwarves he was able to work through his grief, and in doing, found
religion. Dedicating himself to Lady Ishuli, the only one he truly trusts,
his main focus outside of templar duties and campaigns is forgecrafting.
G has a special fervor for fighting undead.
During his time with the templars, G saw many knights fall into temptation,
seeking solace through dubious means in trying times, and cutting corners to
make the ends justify the means. Many that he trusted let him down, and over
time it became harder and harder for him to depend on others, even whilst
hoping to inspire them.
He sees the lands overrun with shapeshifters of all sorts and sizes.
The bee or butterfly you see might be a mage intending to kill you.
The dog wagging its tail at you might intend to rip you apart with
metamorphic jaws and snake venom. G learned to trust nothing and expect
anything.
G's Interpretation of parts of Paladin Code
Added Sun Oct 5 21:04:45 2025 at level 8:
1. Seeks to be a champion of his people. Seeks to inspire others to take care
of their peoples. Hopes for the best and expects the worst out of everyone.
Does not pretend or assume to understand other races' motivations and does
not preach to them on how they should live like dwarves.
3. Patience and control are necessary components of vigilance against enemies.
Historical enemies will always be, and the boundaries between the races
are well defined by ages of war. An action isn't rash if the decision behind
it is thousands of years old.
5. Fight for and defend all worthy causes. The worthy causes are dwarven ones.
The dwarven people have been gradually dwarfed in number by the proliferation
of continually interbreeding human and elven lines. Adding to this pressure is
continual predation by forces such as the Tree, who hunt dwarves on sight, and
ancient enemies such as the drow and duergar.
Average dwarven family size and lengthy developmental times are also a factor
in creating an impetus to support dwarven societies.
8. Never lying also means not lying to yourself. No mortals are truly
trustworthy, though they may surprise you in time. Golzabar hopes to help
Therans without getting habberjinked or hoodwinked with obfuscation.
11. Strict segregation is needed to keep the taint of evil away.
12. Other templars are likely to be the most honest of their respective
peoples. G is able to open up a bit to those of his guild to discuss tactics
and lessons.
travails of Golzabar
Added Mon Oct 20 13:32:43 2025 at level 51:
G loves promoting dwarven advancement and dreams of creating a route from the
unused eastern gate of Akan past the Keep of the Righteous and lands beyond.
-longs to establish smithies in the protected cities and the Spire.
-loves helping dwarves to the point where he gave away extra gear that had
been requested without consideration, and was punished for the action.
Tracked down the gear he gave away, got it back, sac'd it, gave the owner
something better that was won from combat.
G is becoming more focused on his forging as he gets older, and loves the
sound of hammers and weapons being used in battle. He is seeing parallels in
his forging of metal and the purification of his soul, as he strives to
work out his distrust of others and his xenophobia by embracing the code and
striving it uphold its ideals.
G guardedly rejected dozens of invitations to travel before being worn down
by those seeking ranks protected by dwarf muscle. G often feels rushed by
non-dwarves, and doesn't understand their ways. He finds villagers pleasant
to travel with, as they move methodically and sleep often.
Thrazek, a saurian healer, has been very kind to him and has helped him get
over his unease with the saurian race. So too Sirarr and Minehl are slowly
helping him over his unease with changelings.
-G wants to do things methodically and steady, on sure footing, and learn
as he goes, but he also wants to be welcoming and understand other ways.
-G has lost charges under his watch, and grieves for mistakes he has made.
There have been communications failures between disparate races he traveled
with, exacerbated by his paranoia and xenophobia. G understands that his
biases are a weakness, and sees his discomfort as the price to pay to learn
to overcome them.
When anxious, his phobia often expresses itself in him becoming contemplative
and stoic, sometimes going quiet as he assesses the dangers around him and
ruminates on the correct path of action.
-G feels traveling with others has been illuminating, in a white-knuckle kind
of way. There are no end to the asks and needs of Therans, and no end to the
number of ways possible to let them down. G is trying to be a good paladin,
knowing day in day out service will hammer out his flaws slowly and surely.
-G honestly doesn't care about invading the woods to raid for orcs or tree
people, he would let them to their wild ways as long as they remain peaceful in
the streets and stayed clear of dwarven habitations.
However, his duties to his cabal means he will always back the assaults of his
comrades against sworn foes, and despoilers always need stopped.
Broadening horizons
Added Sun Nov 23 12:20:33 2025 at level 51:
Golzabar has spent the summer of his days searching high and low to discover
the secrets of forgecrafting. He has located most of the smiths in Thera, and
observed their processes. G is writing a book about forging, and hopes one
day that Lady Ishuli might publish it in her library. His love of mithril has
increased, and so too his fondness for whitesteel and silver. G values his
tools for their utilitarian value, not giving a whit for ornamentation.
He desires to forge complex elemental weapons, and has made many attempts
without success. G is looking for additional sources that influence weapons
and ways to drop undroppable weapons. Experimentation and discovery of
forging techniques preoccupy his mind when he is not actively battling
criminals or helping the young.
Finding an etching of a harvest cornecopiea in Ishuli's shrine, G stocks her
table with fruit and vegetables every renewal. Praying daily to his Lady, he
has been pleasantly rewarded by meeting several young templars and healers
that worship Ishuli and Zizaerix. Having young believers around him is
rejuvenating and G makes sure they want for nothing. Three of them have
already joined the Spire and G seeks to be a good inspiration for them.
The ascension of Lady Larusae has hit him hard. He learned much from her
presence and strives to live with grace the way she exemplified it. The new
Provost has on occaision chosen to raid the Tree with Imperials instead of
Magistrates of the light. G keeps his mouth shut, rarely talks politics, and
focuses on his duties keeping the peace and taking care of the youth. He is
paranoid enough to understand that voicing his feelings in the current climate
will lead only to punishment, and so he often holds his tongue.
Getting into old age, Golzabar steadfastedly believes dwarven exceptionalism
sets the standard for order and goodness in Thera. He finds a noble purpose
in serving to protect cities that refuse dwarven habitation. Genocide and
racism abound in Thera, yet G is one of the few that acknowledges his
prejudices head on. G's racism has aged into a soothing background hueristic
that explains to him why all the other races are so awkward and undwarflike.
G has dealt with his paranoia by confronting it directly. He tells himself
that accompanying others to the Underdark and beyond, will help overcome his
reservations in trusting others. The lure of possible forge locations and
unknown weaponry goad him to adventure. Several of G's fellow magistrates
deal with bouts of insanity, and G feels less strange being in the company
of fellow eccentrics.
Epiphany
Added Fri Dec 26 14:58:18 2025 at level 51:
Child of a hate-drenched dawn, saved from ruin by his kin,
spent his lifetime battling the demons found within.
He listened to the world at large, and sponged up every word
yet many lessons escaped his grasp and many were never heard.
Mistakes were made, people died, with loved ones lost its true
the paladin mourned a longer list than many ever knew.
Long-tooth student of the heart, with oh so much to learn,
in the crucible of honest work he knew his faults must burn.
Every barrow, sage and tome, was explored, pestered or perused,
elders were asked for guidance and yet he missed their clues.
He prayed and prayed for succor, making a ruckus in the sky
failing to see the hidden world that cannot be viewed by eye.
Discordia, home of Immortal courts, was untrodden by his feet,
his faith kept in Thera, and the Lady in whom he believed.
Like a bull among the kilnware, along his way he blundered
as the silence from the sky turned into deafening thunder.
In despair, he learned from there, to discern humility
seeking to be better than She sees, and of her trust worthy.
Only in doing could he learn that he failed the templar's code
that his path had happened to veer off of the righteous road.
And the young templars lauded him, called him wise and great,
while the silent Theran sky above mocked all of his mistakes.
Knowing this, he did not break, his heart was made of stone.
He still had opportunity to make, the world a better home.
